Recent Findings from Heavy-Flavor Angular Correlation Measurements in Hadronic Collisions

The study of angular correlations of heavy-flavor particles in hadronic collisions can provide crucial insight into the heavy quark production, showering, and hadronization processes. The comparison with model predictions allows us to discriminate among different approaches for heavy quark production and hadronization, as well as different treatments of the underlying event employed by the models to reproduce correlation observables. In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, where a deconfined state of matter, the quark--gluon plasma (QGP), is created, heavy-flavor correlations can shed light on the modification of the heavy quark fragmentation due to the interaction between charm and beauty quarks with the QGP constituents, as well as characterize their energy loss processes while traversing the medium. Insight into the possible emergence of collective-like mechanisms in smaller systems, resembling those observed in heavy-ion collisions, can also be obtained by performing correlation studies in high-multiplicity proton--proton and proton--nucleus collisions. In this review, the most recent and relevant measurements of heavy-flavor correlations performed in all collision systems at the LHC and RHIC will be presented, and the new understandings that they provide will be discussed.

Open Heavy Flavour: Experimental summary

In this paper I will review a few of the latest experimental measurements of heavy-flavour hadrons presented at the Hard Probes 2018 conference. Results from experiments both at RHIC and at the LHC will be discussed. I will present some of the open questions that still need to be addressed with heavy quarks in small collision systems and in A-A collisions, to better understand the properties of the QGP produced in heavy-ion collisions. I will discuss some of the open heavy-flavour measurements designed to give insights into these questions.

Image Fusion Using LEP Filtering and Bilinear Interpolation

Image Fusion is the process in which core information from a set of component images is merged to form a single image, which is more informative and complete than the component input images in quality and appearance. This paper presents a fast and effective image fusion method for creating high quality fused images by merging component images. In the proposed method, the input image is broken down to a two-scale image representation with a base layer having large scale variations in intensity, and a detail layer containing small scale details. Here fusion of the base and detail layers is implemented by means of a Local Edge preserving filtering based technique. The proposed method is an efficient image fusion technique in which the noise component is very low and quality of the resultant image is high so that it can be used for applications like medical image processing, requiring very accurate edge preserved images. Performance is tested by calculating PSNR and SSIM of images. The benefit of the proposed method is that it removes noise without altering the underlying structures of the image. This paper also presents an image zooming technique using bilinear interpolation in which a portion of the input image is cropped and bilinear interpolation is applied. Experimental results showed that the when PSNR value is calculated, the noise is found to be very low for the resultant image portion.

Measurement of electrons from heavy-flavour decays in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV with ALICE

The measurement of heavy-flavour (charm and beauty) production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions provides an important contribution to the study of the properties of the hot and dense medium created in such collisions. One approach to measure heavy-flavour production is via electrons from semi-leptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons. In this contribution we present the nuclear modification factor $(R_{{\rm{AA}}})$ and the azimuthal anisotropy $(v_{2})$ of heavy-flavour decay electrons in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathit{{\rm{NN}}}}= 2.76$ TeV, which are sensitive to the interaction of c and b quarks with the medium. We also present, for the first time, the azimuthal angular correlations of heavy-flavour decay electrons and charged hadrons, $\Delta\phi(\mathit{HFE},h)$, in Pb-Pb collisions and the corresponding near-side yield ratio $(I_{\rm{AA}})$.

Azimuthal angular correlations between heavy-flavour decay particles and charged hadrons in pp collisions in ALICE

Heavy quarks produced in pp and heavy ion collisions are studied using heavy-flavour decay electrons and heavy-flavour mesons. Detailed understanding of the production processes and fragmentation of heavy quarks can be obtained by studying the azimuthal angular correlation of heavy-flavour hadrons. The azimuthal angular correlations of heavy-flavour mesons and charged hadrons can be used to disentangle charm and beauty-hadrons in pp collisions. In this contribution the fraction of electrons from beauty-hadron decays in the heavy-flavour decay electron yield is shown as well as the beauty production cross section in pp collisions at $\sqrt\textrm{s}$ = 2.76 TeV. The measurements are compared to the predictions from next-to leading order perturbative QCD calculations. We also show the results from correlation analysis of charged $\mathrm{D}^{*}$ mesons and hadrons performed using pp collision data at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 7 TeV.

Azimuthal angular correlations between heavy-flavour decay electrons and charged hadrons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 2.76$ TeV in ALICE

In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are produced in hard scattering processes and thus carry relevant information on the properties of the created hot and dense medium. Heavy-flavour hadrons can be measured using electrons from their semileptonic decay channels. The relative contribution of charm and beauty hadrons can be estimated from the study of the near side azimuthal angular correlations between these electrons and charged hadrons. We present the measurement of azimuthal angular correlations between electrons and charged hadrons in pp collisions at 2.76 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC. Electrons are identified using the Electromagnetic Calorimeter and the Time Projection Chamber and the charged hadrons are identified using the Time Projection Chamber. The azimuthal angular correlation distributions from PYTHIA simulations are used to extract the relative contribution from B-hadron decays to the yield of electrons from heavy-flavour decays up to $p_\textrm{t}$ = 10 GeV/c.
