Pattern Formation in Growing Sandpiles with Multiple Sources or Sinks

Adding sand grains at a single site in Abelian sandpile models produces beautiful but complex patterns. We study the effect of sink sites on such patterns. Sinks change the scaling of the diameter of the pattern with the number $N$ of sand grains added. For example, in two dimensions, in presence of a sink site, the diameter of the pattern grows as $\sqrt{(N/\log N)}$ for large $N$, whereas it grows as $\sqrt{N}$ if there are no sink sites. In presence of a line of sink sites, this rate reduces to $N^{1/3}$. We determine the growth rates for these sink geometries along with the case when there are two lines of sink sites forming a wedge, and its generalization to higher dimensions. We characterize one such asymptotic patterns on the two-dimensional F-lattice with a single source adjacent to a line of sink sites, in terms of position of different spatial features in the pattern. For this lattice, we also provide an exact characterization of the pattern with two sources, when the line joining them is along one of the axes.

Asymptotic shape of the region visited by an Eulerian Walker

We study an Eulerian walker on a square lattice, starting from an initially randomly oriented background using Monte Carlo simulations. We present evidence that, that, for large number of steps $N$, the asymptotic shape of the set of sites visited by the walker is a perfect circle. The radius of the circle increases as $N^{1/3}$, for large $N$, and the width of the boundary region grows as $N^{α/ 3}$, with $α= 0.40 \pm .05$. If we introduce stochasticity in the evolution rules, the mean square displacement of the walker, $ \sim N^{2ν}$, shows a crossover from the Eulerian ($ν= 1/3$) to a simple random walk ($ν=1/2$) behaviour.

Scaling relation for determining the critical threshold for continuum percolation of overlapping discs of two sizes

We study continuum percolation of overlapping circular discs of two sizes. We propose a phenomenological scaling equation for the increase in the effective size of the larger discs due to the presence of the smaller discs. The critical percolation threshold as a function of the ratio of sizes of discs, for different values of the relative areal densities of two discs, can be described in terms of a scaling function of only one variable. The recent accurate Monte Carlo estimates of critical threshold by Quintanilla and Ziff [Phys. Rev. E, 76 051115 (2007)] are in very good agreement with the proposed scaling relation.

States of matter

This is a written version of a popular science talk for school children given on India's National Science Day 2009 at Mumbai. I discuss what distinguishes solids, liquids and gases from each other. I discuss briefly granular matter that in some ways behave like solids, and in other ways like liquids.

Steady state of Stochastic Sandpile Models

We study the steady state of the abelian sandpile models with stochastic toppling rules. The particle addition operators commute with each other, but in general these operators need not be diagonalizable. We use their abelian algebra to determine their eigenvalues, and the Jordan block structure. These are then used to determine the probability of different configurations in the steady state. We illustrate this procedure by explicitly determining the numerically exact steady state for a one dimensional example, for systems of size $\le12$, and also study the density profile in the steady state.

Critical behavior of loops and biconnected clusters on fractals of dimension d < 2

We solve the O(n) model, defined in terms of self- and mutually avoiding loops coexisting with voids, on a 3-simplex fractal lattice, using an exact real space renormalization group technique. As the density of voids is decreased, the model shows a critical point, and for even lower densities of voids, there is a dense phase showing power-law correlations, with critical exponents that depend on n, but are independent of density. At n=-2 on the dilute branch, a trivalent vertex defect acts as a marginal perturbation. We define a model of biconnected clusters which allows for a finite density of such vertices. As n is varied, we get a line of critical points of this generalized model, emanating from the point of marginality in the original loop model. We also study another perturbation of adding local bending rigidity to the loop model, and find that it does not affect the universality class.

Pattern formation in growing sandpiles

Adding grains at a single site on a flat substrate in the Abelian sandpile models produce beautiful complex patterns. We study in detail the pattern produced by adding grains on a two-dimensional square lattice with directed edges (each site has two arrows directed inward and two outward), starting with a periodic background with half the sites occupied. The size of the pattern formed scales with the number of grains added $N$ as $\sqrt{N}$. We give exact characterization of the asymptotic pattern, in terms of the position and shape of different features of the pattern.

Exact entropy of dimer coverings for a class of lattices in three or more dimensions

We construct a class of lattices in three and higher dimensions for which the number of dimer coverings can be determined exactly using elementary arguments. These lattices are a generalization of the two-dimensional kagome lattice, and the method also works for graphs without translational symmetry. The partition function for dimer coverings on these lattices can be determined also for a class of assignments of different activities to different edges.

Emergence of quasi-units in the one dimensional Zhang model

We study the Zhang model of sandpile on a one dimensional chain of length $L$, where a random amount of energy is added at a randomly chosen site at each time step. We show that in spite of this randomness in the input energy, the probability distribution function of energy at a site in the steady state is sharply peaked, and the width of the peak decreases as $ {L}^{-1/2}$ for large $L$. We discuss how the energy added at one time is distributed among different sites by topplings with time. We relate this distribution to the time-dependent probability distribution of the position of a marked grain in the one dimensional Abelian model with discrete heights. We argue that in the large $L$ limit, the variance of energy at site $x$ has a scaling form $L^{-1}g(x/L)$, where $g(ξ)$ varies as $\log(1/ξ)$ for small $ξ$, which agrees very well with the results from numerical simulations.

Critical Behavior of Sandpile Models with Sticky Grains

We revisit the question whether the critical behavior of sandpile models with sticky grains is in the directed percolation universality class. Our earlier theoretical arguments in favor, supported by evidence from numerical simulations [ Phys. Rev. Lett., {\bf 89} (2002) 104303], have been disputed by Bonachela et al. [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 74} (2004) 050102] for sandpiles with no preferred direction. We discuss possible reasons for the discrepancy. Our new results of longer simulations of the one-dimensional undirected model fully support our earlier conclusions.

On the orientational ordering of long rods on a lattice

We argue that a system of straight rigid rods of length k on square lattice with only hard-core interactions shows two phase transitions as a function of density, rho, for k >= 7. The system undergoes a phase transition from the low-density disordered phase to a nematic phase as rho is increased from 0, at rho = rho_c1, and then again undergoes a reentrant phase transition from the nematic phase to a disordered phase at rho = rho_c2 < 1.

Random trimer tilings

We study tilings of the square lattice by linear trimers. For a cylinder of circumference m, we construct a conserved functional of the base of the tilings, and use this to block-diagonalize the transfer matrix. The number of blocks increases exponentially with m. The dimension of the ground-state block is shown to grow as (3 / 2^{1/3})^m. We numerically diagonalize this block for m <= 27, obtaining the estimate S = 0.158520 +- 0.000015 for the entropy per site in the thermodynamic limit. We present numerical evidence that the continuum limit of the model has conformal invariance. We measure several scaling dimensions, including those corresponding to defects of dimers and L-shaped trimers. The trimer tilings of a plane admits a two-dimensional height representation. Monte Carlo simulations of the height variables show that the height-height correlations grows logarithmically at large separation, and the orientation-orientation correlations decay as a power law.

Sampling rare fluctuations of height in the Oslo ricepile model

We have studied large deviations of the height of the pile from its mean value in the Oslo ricepile model. We sampled these very rare events with probabilities of order $10^{-100}$ by Monte Carlo simulations using importance sampling. These simulations check our qualitative arguement [Phys. Rev. E, {\bf 73}, 021303, 2006] that in steady state of the Oslo ricepile model, the probability of large negative height fluctuations $Δh=-αL$ about the mean varies as $\exp(-κα^4 L^3)$ as $L \to \infty$ with $α$ held fixed, and $κ> 0$.

Preserving Quantum States : A Super-Zeno Effect

We construct an algorithm for suppressing the transitions of a quantum mechanical system, initially prepared in a subspace P of the full Hilbert space of the system, to outside this subspace by subjecting it to a sequence of unequally spaced short-duration pulses. Each pulse multiplies the amplitude of the vectors in the subspace by -1. The number of pulses required by the algorithm to limit the leakage probability to $ε$ in time $T$ increases as $T \exp[ \sqrt{\log(T^2/ε)}]$, compared to $T^2 ε^{-1}$ in the standard quantum Zeno effect.

Efficiency of the Incomplete Enumeration algorithm for Monte-Carlo simulation of linear and branched polymers

We study the efficiency of the incomplete enumeration algorithm for linear and branched polymers. There is a qualitative difference in the efficiency in these two cases. The average time to generate an independent sample of $n$ sites for large $n$ varies as $n^2$ for linear polymers, but as $exp(c n^α)$ for branched (undirected and directed) polymers, where $0<α<1$. On the binary tree, our numerical studies for $n$ of order $10^4$ gives $α= 0.333 \pm 0.005$. We argue that $α=1/3$ exactly in this case.

Quenched Averages for self-avoiding walks and polygons on deterministic fractals

We study rooted self avoiding polygons and self avoiding walks on deterministic fractal lattices of finite ramification index. Different sites on such lattices are not equivalent, and the number of rooted open walks W_n(S), and rooted self-avoiding polygons P_n(S) of n steps depend on the root S. We use exact recursion equations on the fractal to determine the generating functions for P_n(S), and W_n(S) for an arbitrary point S on the lattice. These are used to compute the averages $< P_n(S)>, , $ and $ $ over different positions of S. We find that the connectivity constant $μ$, and the radius of gyration exponent $ν$ are the same for the annealed and quenched averages. However, $ ~ n log μ+ (α_q -2) log n$, and $ ~ n log μ+ (γ_q -1)log n$, where the exponents $α_q$ and $γ_q$ take values different from the annealed case. These are expressed as the Lyapunov exponents of random product of finite-dimensional matrices. For the 3-simplex lattice, our numerical estimation gives $ α_q \simeq 0.72837 \pm 0.00001$; and $γ_q \simeq 1.37501 \pm 0.00003$, to be compared with the annealed values $α_a = 0.73421$ and $γ_a = 1.37522$.

Probability distribution of residence times of grains in models of ricepiles

We study the probability distribution of residence time of a grain at a site, and its total residence time inside a pile, in different ricepile models. The tails of these distributions are dominated by the grains that get deeply buried in the pile. We show that, for a pile of size $L$, the probabilities that the residence time at a site or the total residence time is greater than $t$, both decay as $1/t(\ln t)^x$ for $L^ω \ll t \ll \exp(L^γ)$ where $γ$ is an exponent $ \ge 1$, and values of $x$ and $ω$ in the two cases are different. In the Oslo ricepile model we find that the probability that the residence time $T_i$ at a site $i$ being greater than or equal to $t$, is a non-monotonic function of $L$ for a fixed $t$ and does not obey simple scaling. For model in $d$ dimensions, we show that the probability of minimum slope configuration in the steady state, for large $L$, varies as $\exp(-κL^{d+2})$ where $κ$ is a constant, and hence $ γ= d+2$.
