Absence of local thermal equilibrium in two models of heat conduction

A crucial assumption in the conventional description of thermal conduction is the existence of local thermal equilibrium. We test this assumption in two simple models of heat conduction. Our first model is a linear chain of planar spins with nearest neighbour couplings, and the second model is that of a Lorentz gas. We look at the steady state of the system when the two ends are connected to heat baths at temperatures T1 and T2. If T1=T2, the system reaches thermal equilibrium. If T1 is not equal to T2, there is a heat current through the system, but there is no local thermal equilibrium. This is true even in the limit of large system size, when the heat current goes to zero. We argue that this is due to the existence of an infinity of local conservation laws in their dynamics.

The abelian sandpile and related models

The Abelian sandpile model is the simplest analytically tractable model of self-organized criticality. This paper presents a brief review of known results about the model. The abelian group structure allows an exact calculation of many of its properties. In particular, one can calculate all the critical exponents for the directed model in all dimensions. For the undirected case, the model is related to q= 0 Potts model. This enables exact calculation of some exponents in two dimensions, and there are some conjectures about others. We also discuss a generalization of the model to a network of communicating reactive processors. This includes sandpile models with stochastic toppling rules as a special case. We also consider a non-abelian stochastic variant, which lies in a different universality class, related to directed percolation.

Drift and trapping in biased diffusion on disordered lattices

We reexamine the theory of transition from drift to no-drift in biased diffusion on percolation networks. We argue that for the bias field B equal to the critical value B_c, the average velocity at large times t decreases to zero as 1/log(t). For B < B_c, the time required to reach the steady-state velocity diverges as exp(const/|B_c-B|). We propose an extrapolation form that describes the behavior of average velocity as a function of time at intermediate time scales. This form is found to have a very good agreement with the results of extensive Monte Carlo simulations on a 3-dimensional site-percolation network and moderate bias.

Emergent spatial structures in critical sandpiles

We introduce and study a new directed sandpile model with threshold dynamics and stochastic toppling rules. We show that particle conservation law and the directed percolation-like local evolution of avalanches lead to the formation of a spatial structure in the steady state, with the density developing a power law tail away from the top. We determine the scaling exponents characterizing the avalanche distributions in terms of the critical exponents of directed percolation in all dimensions.

A Model of Interface Growth with non-Burgers Dynamical Exponent

We define a new model of interface roughening which has the property that the minimum of interface height is conserved locally during the growth. This model corresponds to the limit $q \to \infty$ of the q-color dimer deposition-evaporation model introduced by us earlier [Hari Menon M K and Dhar D 1995 J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 28 6517]. We present numerical evidence from Monte Carlo simulations and the exact diagonalization of the evolution operator on finite rings that this model is not in the universality class of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang interface growth model. The dynamical exponent z in one dimension is larger than 2, with $z \approx 2.5$. And there are logarithmic corrections to the scaling of the gap with system size. Higher dimensional generalization of the model is briefly discussed.

Distribution of sizes of erased loops for loop-erased random walks

We study the distribution of sizes of erased loops for loop-erased random walks on regular and fractal lattices. We show that for arbitrary graphs the probability $P(l)$ of generating a loop of perimeter $l$ is expressible in terms of the probability $P_{st}(l)$ of forming a loop of perimeter $l$ when a bond is added to a random spanning tree on the same graph by the simple relation $P(l)=P_{st}(l)/l$. On $d$-dimensional hypercubical lattices, $P(l)$ varies as $l^{-σ}$ for large $l$, where $σ=1+2/z$ for $1<d<4$, where z is the fractal dimension of the loop-erased walks on the graph. On recursively constructed fractals with $\tilde{d} < 2$ this relation is modified to $σ=1+2\bar{d}/{(\tilde{d}z)}$, where $\bar{d}$ is the hausdorff and $\tilde{d}$ is the spectral dimension of the fractal.

Conservation Laws and Integrability of a One-dimensional Model of Diffusing Dimers

We study a model of assisted diffusion of hard-core particles on a line. The model shows strongly ergodicity breaking : configuration space breaks up into an exponentially large number of disconnected sectors. We determine this sector-decomposion exactly. Within each sector the model is reducible to the simple exclusion process, and is thus equivalent to the Heisenberg model and is fully integrable. We discuss additional symmetries of the equivalent quantum Hamiltonian which relate observables in different sectors. In some sectors, the long-time decay of correlation functions is qualitatively different from that of the simple exclusion process. These decays in different sectors are deduced from an exact mapping to a model of the diffusion of hard-core random walkers with conserved spins, and are also verified numerically. We also discuss some implications of the existence of an infinity of conservation laws for a hydrodynamic description.

Diffusing Reconstituting Dimers: A Simple Model of Broken Ergodicity and Ageing

We consider a simple analytically tractable model of metastability and ageing. In this model, a particle can jump left or right by two steps to an unoccupied site, but only if the the site in between is occupied. We show that the model is strongly nonergodic, and the number of metastable states increases as exponential of the size of the system. Within a sector, the model is equivalent to the Heisenberg model and is exactly soluble. We study how this strong breaking of ergodicity affects the hydrodynamical description of long wavelength density fluctuations in the system. Finally, we study the effect of allowing transitions between different metastable states at a very slow rate.

Zero-temperature Hysteresis in Random-field Ising Model on a Bethe Lattice

We consider the single-spin-flip dynamics of the random-field Ising model on a Bethe lattice at zero temperature in the presence of a uniform external field. We determine the average magnetization as the external field is varied from minus infinity to plus infinity by setting up the self-consistent field equations, which we show are exact in this case. We find that for a 3-coordinated Bethe lattice, there is no jump discontinuity in magnetization for arbitrarily small gaussian disorder, but the discontinuity is present for larger coordination numbers. We have checked our results by Monte Carlo simulations employing a technique for simulating classical interacting systems on the Bethe lattice which avoids surface effects altogether.

Eulerian Walkers as a model of Self-Organised Criticality

We propose a new model of self-organized criticality. A particle is dropped at random on a lattice and moves along directions specified by arrows at each site. As it moves, it changes the direction of the arrows according to fixed rules. On closed graphs these walks generate Euler circuits. On open graphs, the particle eventually leaves the system, and a new particle is then added. The operators corresponding to particle addition generate an abelian group, same as the group for the Abelian Sandpile model on the graph. We determine the critical steady state and some critical exponents exactly, using this equivalence.

The Irreducible String and an Infinity of Additional Constants of Motion in a Deposition-Evaporation Model on a Line

We study a model of stochastic deposition-evaporation with recombination, of three species of dimers on a line. This model is a generalization of the model recently introduced by Barma {\it et. al.} (1993 {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 70} 1033) to $q\ge 3$ states per site. It has an infinite number of constants of motion, in addition to the infinity of conservation laws of the original model which are encoded as the conservation of the irreducible string. We determine the number of dynamically disconnected sectors and their sizes in this model exactly. Using the additional symmetry we construct a class of exact eigenvectors of the stochastic matrix. The autocorrelation function decays with different powers of $t$ in different sectors. We find that the spatial correlation function has an algebraic decay with exponent 3/2, in the sector corresponding to the initial state in which all sites are in the same state. The dynamical exponent is nontrivial in this sector, and we estimate it numerically by exact diagonalization of the stochastic matrix for small sizes. We find that in this case $z=2.39\pm0.05$.

Breakdown of Simple Scaling in Abelian Sandpile Models in One Dimension

We study the abelian sandpile model on decorated one dimensional chains. We determine the structure and the asymptotic form of distribution of avalanche-sizes in these models, and show that these differ qualitatively from the behavior on a simple linear chain. We find that the probability distribution of the total number of topplings $s$ on a finite system of size $L$ is not described by a simple finite size scaling form, but by a linear combination of two simple scaling forms $Prob_L(s) = 1/L f_1(s/L) + 1/L^2 f_2(s/L^2)$, for large $L$, where $f_1$ and $f_2$ are some scaling functions of one argument.

Slow Relaxation in a Model with Many Conservation Laws : Deposition and Evaporation of Trimers on a Line

We study the slow decay of the steady-state autocorrelation function $C(t)$ in a stochastic model of deposition and evaporation of trimers on a line with infinitely many conservation laws and sectors. Simulations show that $C(t)$ decays as different powers of $t$, or as $\exp (-t^{1/2})$, depending on the sector. We explain this diversity by relating the problem to diffusion of hard core particles with conserved spin labels. The model embodies a matrix generalization of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang model of interface roughening. In the sector which includes the empty line, the dynamical exponent $z$ is $2.55 \pm 0.15$.

Numerical Diagonalisation Study of the Trimer Deposition-Evaporation Model in One Dimension

We study the model of deposition-evaporation of trimers on a line recently introduced by Barma, Grynberg and Stinchcombe. The stochastic matrix of the model can be written in the form of the Hamiltonian of a quantum spin-1/2 chain with three-spin couplings given by $ H= \sum\displaylimits_i [(1 - σ_i^-σ_{i+1}^-σ_{i+2}^-) σ_i^+σ_{i+1}^+σ_{i+2}^+ + h.c]$. We study by exact numerical diagonalization of $H$ the variation of the gap in the eigenvalue spectrum with the system size for rings of size up to 30. For the sector corresponding to the initial condition in which all sites are empty, we find that the gap vanishes as $L^{-z}$ where the gap exponent $z$ is approximately $2.55\pm 0.15$. This model is equivalent to an interfacial roughening model where the dynamical variables at each site are matrices. From our estimate for the gap exponent we conclude that the model belongs to a new universality class, distinct from that studied by Kardar, Parisi and Zhang.
