Curvature blow-up rates in spherically symmetric gravitational collapse to a Schwarzschild black hole

We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizon. This indicates a new blow-up phenomenon, driven by a PDE mechanism, rather than an ODE mechanism.

The interior of dynamical extremal black holes in spherical symmetry

We study the nonlinear stability of the Cauchy horizon in the interior of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes under spherical symmetry. We consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system such that the charge of the scalar field is appropriately small in terms of the mass of the background extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. Given spherically symmetric characteristic initial data which approach the event horizon of extremal Reissner-Nordström sufficiently fast, we prove that the solution extends beyond the Cauchy horizon in $C^{0,\frac{1}{2}}\cap W^{1,2}_{loc}$, in contrast to the subextremal case (where generically the solution is $C^0\setminus (C^{0,\frac{1}{2}}\cap W^{1,2}_{loc}))$. In particular, there exist non-unique spherically symmetric extensions which are moreover solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system. Finally, in the case that the scalar field is chargeless and massless, we additionally show that the extension can be chosen so that the scalar field remains Lipschitz.

Horizon hair of extremal black holes and measurements at null infinity

It is shown that the conserved charges on the event horizon and the Cauchy horizon associated to scalar perturbations on extremal black holes are externally measurable from null infinity. This suggests that these charges have the potential to serve as an observational signature. The proof of this result is based on obtaining precise late-time asymptotics for the radiation field of outgoing perturbations.

Asymptotic blow-up for a class of semilinear wave equations on extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetimes

We prove small data global existence for a class of semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition on extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole backgrounds with nonlinear terms that degenerate at the event horizon. We impose no symmetry assumptions. The study of such equations is motivated by their covariance properties under the Couch-Torrence conformal isometry. We show decay, non-decay and asymptotic blow-up results analogous to those in the linear case.

A vector field approach to almost-sharp decay for the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary spacetimes

We present a new vector field approach to almost-sharp decay for the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary and asymptotically flat spacetimes. Specifically, we derive a new hierarchy of higher-order weighted energy estimates by employing appropriate commutator vector fields. In cases where an integrated local energy decay estimate holds, like in the case of sub-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, this hierarchy leads to almost-sharp global energy and pointwise time-decay estimates with decay rates that go beyond those obtained by the traditional vector field method. Our estimates play a fundamental role in our companion paper where precise late-time asymptotics are obtained for linear scalar fields on such backgrounds.

Late-time asymptotics for the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary spacetimes

We derive precise late-time asymptotics for solutions to the wave equation on spherically symmetric, stationary and asymptotically flat spacetimes including as special cases the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom families of black holes. We also obtain late-time asymptotics for the time derivatives of all orders and for the radiation field along null infinity. We show that the leading-order term in the asymptotic expansion is related to the existence of the conserved Newman-Penrose quantities on null infinity. As a corollary we obtain a characterization of all solutions which satisfy Price's polynomial law as a lower bound. Our analysis relies on physical space techniques and uses the vector field approach for almost-sharp decay estimates introduced in our companion paper. In the black hole case, our estimates hold in the domain of outer communications up to and including the event horizon. Our work is motivated by the stability problem for black hole exteriors and strong cosmic censorship for black hole interiors.

Linear waves in the interior of extremal black holes II

We consider solutions to the linear wave equation in the interior region of extremal Kerr black holes. We show that axisymmetric solutions can be extended continuously beyond the Cauchy horizon and moreover that, if we assume suitably fast polynomial decay in time along the event horizon, their local energy is finite. We also extend these results to non-axisymmetric solutions on slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newman black holes. These results are the analogues of results obtained in [D. Gajic, Linear waves in the interior of extremal black holes I, arXiv:1509.06568] for extremal Reissner-Nordström and stand in stark contrast to previously established results for the subextremal case, where the local energy was shown to generically blow up at the Cauchy horizon.

Linear waves in the interior of extremal black holes I

We consider solutions to the linear wave equation in the interior region of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes. We show that, under suitable assumptions on the initial data, the solutions can be extended continuously beyond the Cauchy horizon and moreover, that their local energy is finite. This result is in contrast with previously established results for subextremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, where the local energy was shown to generically blow up at the Cauchy horizon.

Linear waves on constant radius limits of cosmological black hole spacetimes

In this paper we consider the Klein-Gordon equation on spherically symmetric background spacetimes with a constant area radius. The spacetimes under consideration are Nariai and Plebański-Hacyan, and can be considered constant radius limits of Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter spacetimes. We prove boundedness in the case of a non-negative Klein Gordon mass and decay unless the mass is zero. In the latter case we prove decay of solutions that are supported on all harmonic modes with angular momentum l greater or equal to 1. We show that the l=0 modes of solutions to the massless Klein-Gordon equation do not decay. They are subject to conservation laws along degenerate Killing horizons. We apply the estimates in Nariai to give decay of solutions to the massive Klein-Gordon equation on an n-dimensional de Sitter background, using only the vector field method and with no restrictions on the positive Klein-Gordon mass.
