LDP and CLT for SPDEs with Transport Noise

In this work we consider solutions to stochastic partial differential equations with transport noise, which are known to converge, in a suitable scaling limit, to solution of the corresponding deterministic PDE with an additional viscosity term. Large deviations and Gaussian fluctuations underlying such scaling limit are investigated in two cases of interest: stochastic linear transport equations in dimension $D\geq 2$ and $2$D Euler equations in vorticity form. In both cases, a central limit theorem with strong convergence and explicit rate is established. The proofs rely on nontrivial tools, like the solvability of transport equations with supercritical coefficients and $Γ$-convergence arguments.

Well posedness and limit theorems for a class of stochastic dyadic models

We consider stochastic inviscid dyadic models with energy-preserving noise. It is shown that the models admit weak solutions which are unique in law. Under a certain scaling limit of the noise, the stochastic models converge weakly to a deterministic viscous dyadic model, for which we provide explicit convergence rates in terms of the parameters of noise. A central limit theorem underlying such scaling limit is also established. In case that the stochastic dyadic model is viscous, we show the phenomenon of dissipation enhancement for suitably chosen noise.

Quantitative convergence rates for scaling limit of SPDEs with transport noise

We consider on the torus the scaling limit of stochastic 2D (inviscid) fluid dynamical equations with transport noise to deterministic viscous equations. Quantitative estimates on the convergence rates are provided by combining analytic and probabilistic arguments, especially heat kernel properties and maximal estimates for stochastic convolutions. Similar ideas are applied to the stochastic 2D Keller-Segel model, yielding explicit choice of noise to ensure that the blow-up probability is less than any given threshold. Our approach also gives rise to some mixing property for stochastic linear transport equations and dissipation enhancement in the viscous case.

Regularization by transport noise for 3D MHD equations

We consider the problem of regularization by noise for the three dimensional magnetohydrodynamical (3D MHD) equations. It is shown that, in a suitable scaling limit, multiplicative noise of transport type gives rise to bounds on the vorticity fields of the fluid velocity and magnetic fields. As a result, if the noise intensity is big enough, then the stochastic 3D MHD equations admit a pathwise unique global solution for large initial data, with high probability.

Eddy heat exchange at the boundary under white noise turbulence

We prove the existence of an eddy heat diffusion coefficient coming from an idealized model of turbulent fluid. A difficulty lies in the presence of a boundary, with also turbulent mixing and the eddy diffusion coefficient going to zero at the boundary. Nevertheless enhanced diffusion takes place.

High mode transport noise improves vorticity blow-up control in 3D Navier-Stokes equations

The paper is devoted to the open problem of regularization by noise of 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Opposite to several attempts made with additive noise which remained inconclusive, we show here that a suitable multiplicative noise of transport type has a regularizing effect. It is proven that stochastic transport noise provides a bound on vorticity which gives well posedness, with high probability. The result holds for sufficiently large noise intensity and sufficiently high spectrum of the noise.

Delayed blow-up by transport noise

For some deterministic nonlinear PDEs on the torus whose solutions may blow up in finite time, we show that, under suitable conditions on the nonlinear term, the blow-up is delayed by multiplicative noise of transport type in a certain scaling limit. The main result is applied to the 3D Keller-Segel, 3D Fisher-KPP and 2D Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations, yielding long-time existence for large initial data with high probability.

Numerical computation of probabilities for nonlinear SDEs in high dimension using Kolmogorov equation

Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) in high dimension, having the structure of finite dimensional approximation of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDEs), are considered. The aim is to compute numerically expected values and probabilities associated to their solutions, by solving the associated Kolmogorov equations, with a partial use of Monte Carlo strategy - precisely, using Monte Carlo only for the linear part of the SDE. The basic idea was presented in Flandoli et al., JMAA (2020), but here we strongly improve the numerical results by means of a shift of the auxiliary Gaussian process. For relatively simple nonlinearities, we have good results in dimension of the order of 100.

Convergence of stochastic 2D inviscid Boussinesq equations with transport noise to a deterministic viscous system

The inviscid 2D Boussinesq system with thermal diffusivity and multiplicative noise of transport type is studied in the $L^2$-setting. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noise, weak solutions to the stochastic 2D Boussinesq equations converge weakly to the unique solution of the deterministic viscous Boussinesq system. Consequently, the transport noise asymptotically regularizes the inviscid 2D Boussinesq system and enhances dissipation in the limit.

Global well-posedness of the 3D Navier--Stokes equations perturbed by a deterministic vector field

We are concerned with the problem of global well-posedness of the 3D Navier--Stokes equations on the torus with unitary viscosity. While a full answer to this question seems to be out of reach of the current techniques, we establish a regularization by a deterministic vector field. More precisely, we consider the vorticity form of the system perturbed by an additional transport type term. Such a perturbation conserves the enstrophy and therefore a priori it does not imply any smoothing. Our main result is a construction of a deterministic vector field $v=v(t,x)$ which provides the desired regularization of the system and yields global well-posedness for large initial data outside arbitrary small sets. The proof relies on probabilistic arguments developed by Flandoli and Luo, tools from rough path theory by Hofmanová, Leahy and Nilssen and a new Wong--Zakai approximation result, which itself combines probabilistic and rough path techniques.

On the relation between the Girsanov transform and the Kolmogorov equations for SPDEs

The Girsanov transform and Kolmogorov equations are two useful methods for studying SPDEs. It is shown that, under suitable conditions, the series expansion obtained from the Girsanov transform coincides with the one generated by an iteration scheme for Kolmogorov equations. We also apply the iteration approach to extend the well posedness theory for Kolmogorov equations beyond the boundedness condition on the nonlinear term.

Stochastic mSQG equations with multiplicative transport noises: white noise solutions and scaling limit

We consider the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic (mSQG) equation on the 2D torus $\mathbb{T}^2$, perturbed by multiplicative transport noise. The equation admits the white noise measure on $\mathbb{T}^2$ as the invariant measure. We first prove the existence of white noise solutions to the stochastic equation via the method of point vortex approximation, then, under a suitable scaling limit of the noise, we show that the solutions converge weakly to the unique stationary solution of the dissipative mSQG equation driven by space-time white noise. The weak uniqueness of the latter equation is also proved by following Gubinelli and Perkowski's approach in \cite{GP-18}.

Scaling limit of stochastic 2D Euler equations with transport noises to the deterministic Navier-Stokes equations

We consider a family of stochastic 2D Euler equations in vorticity form on the torus, with transport type noises and $L^2$-initial data. Under a suitable scaling of the noises, we show that the solutions converge weakly to that of the deterministic 2D Navier--Stokes equations. Consequently, we deduce that the weak solutions of the stochastic 2D Euler equations are approximately unique and "weakly quenched exponential mixing".

A numerical approach to Kolmogorov equation in high dimension based on Gaussian analysis

For Kolmogorov equations associated to finite dimensional stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in high dimension, a numerical method alternative to Monte Carlo simulations is proposed. The structure of the SDE is inspired by stochastic Partial Differential Equations (SPDE) and thus contains an underlying Gaussian process which is the key of the algorithm. A series development of the solution in terms of iterated integrals of the Gaussian process is given, it is proved to converge - also in the infinite dimensional limit - and it is numerically tested in a number of examples.

Fokker-Planck equation for dissipative 2D Euler equations with cylindrical noise

After a short review of recent progresses in 2D Euler equations with random initial conditions and noise, some of the recent results are improved by exploiting a priori estimates on the associated infinite dimensional Fokker-Planck equation. The regularity class of solutions investigated here does not allow energy- or enstrophy-type estimates, but only bounds in probability with respect to suitable distributions of the initial conditions. This is a remarkable application of Fokker-Planck equations in infinite dimensions. Among the example of random initial conditions we consider Gibbsian measures based on renormalized kinetic energy.
