Optimal Control of Tuberculosis: A Review

We review the optimal control of systems modeling the dynamics of tuberculosis. Time dependent control functions are introduced in the mathematical models, representing strategies for the improvement of the treatment and cure of active infectious and/or latent individuals. Optimal control theory allows then to find the optimal way to implement the strategies, minimizing the number of infectious and/or latent individuals and keeping the cost of implementation as low as possible. An optimal control problem is proposed and solved, illustrating the procedure. Simulations show an effective reduction in the number of infectious individuals.

Modeling TB-HIV syndemic and treatment

Tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be considered a deadly human syndemic. In this article, we formulate a model for TB and HIV transmission dynamics. The model considers both TB and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) treatment for individuals with only one of the infectious diseases or both. The basic reproduction number and equilibrium points are determined and stability is analyzed. Through simulations, we show that TB treatment for individuals with only TB infection reduces the number of individuals that become co-infected with TB and HIV/AIDS, and reduces the diseases (TB and AIDS) induced deaths. Analogously, the treatment of individuals with only AIDS also reduces the number of co-infected individuals. Further, TB-treatment for co-infected individuals in the active and latent stage of TB disease, implies a decrease of the number of individuals that passes from HIV-positive to AIDS.

Approximate Controllability of Fractional Delay Dynamic Inclusions with Nonlocal Control Conditions

We introduce a nonlocal control condition and the notion of approximate controllability for fractional order quasilinear control inclusions. Approximate controllability of a fractional control nonlocal delay quasilinear functional differential inclusion in a Hilbert space is studied. The results are obtained by using the fractional power of operators, multi-valued analysis, and Sadovskii's fixed point theorem. Main result gives an appropriate set of sufficient conditions for the considered system to be approximately controllable. As an example, a fractional partial nonlocal control functional differential inclusion is considered.

A Fractional Calculus on Arbitrary Time Scales: Fractional Differentiation and Fractional Integration

We introduce a general notion of fractional (noninteger) derivative for functions defined on arbitrary time scales. The basic tools for the time-scale fractional calculus (fractional differentiation and fractional integration) are then developed. As particular cases, one obtains the usual time-scale Hilger derivative when the order of differentiation is one, and a local approach to fractional calculus when the time scale is chosen to be the set of real numbers.

Generalized fractional operators for nonstandard Lagrangians

In this note we study the application of generalized fractional operators to a particular class of nonstandard Lagrangians. These are typical of dissipative systems and the corresponding Euler-Lagrange and Hamilton equations are analyzed. The dependence of the equation of motion on the generalized kernel permits to obtain a wide range of different configurations of motion. Some examples are discussed and analyzed.

Existence of minimizers for generalized Lagrangian functionals and a necessary optimality condition --- Application to fractional variational problems

We study dynamic minimization problems of the calculus of variations with generalized Lagrangian functionals that depend on a general linear operator $K$ and defined on bounded-time intervals. Under assumptions of regularity, convexity and coercivity, we derive sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of a minimizer. Finally, we obtain necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type. Main results are illustrated with special cases, when $K$ is a general kernel operator and, in particular, with $K$ the fractional integral of Riemann-Liouville and Hadamard. The application of our results to the recent fractional calculus of variations gives answer to an open question posed in [Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2012, Art. ID 871912; doi:10.1155/2012/871912].

Necessary condition for an Euler-Lagrange equation on time scales

We prove a necessary condition for a dynamic integro-differential equation to be an Euler-Lagrange equation. New and interesting results for the discrete and quantum calculus are obtained as particular cases. An example of a second order dynamic equation, which is not an Euler-Lagrange equation on an arbitrary time scale, is given.

A Discretization Method to Solve Fractional Variational Problems with Dependence on Hadamard Derivatives

We provide a fast and simple method to solve fractional variational problems with dependence on Hadamard fractional derivatives. Using a relation between the Hadamard fractional operator and a sum involving integer-order derivatives, we rewrite the fractional problem into a classical optimal control problem. The latter problem is then solved by application of standard numerical techniques. We illustrate the procedure with an example.

An Inverse Problem of the Calculus of Variations on Arbitrary Time Scales

We consider an inverse extremal problem for variational functionals on arbitrary time scales. Using the Euler-Lagrange equation and the strengthened Legendre condition, we derive a general form for a variational functional that attains a local minimum at a given point of the vector space.

Optimal control and numerical software: an overview

Optimal Control (OC) is the process of determining control and state trajectories for a dynamic system, over a period of time, in order to optimize a given performance index. With the increasing of variables and complexity, OC problems can no longer be solved analytically and, consequently, numerical methods are required. For this purpose, direct and indirect methods are used. Direct methods consist in the discretization of the OC problem, reducing it to a nonlinear constrained optimization problem. Indirect methods are based on the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, which in turn reduces to a boundary value problem. In order to have a more reliable solution, one can solve the same problem through different approaches. Here, as an illustrative example, an epidemiological application related to the rubella disease is solved using several software packages, such as the routine ode45 of Matlab, OC-ODE, DOTcvp toolbox, IPOPT and Snopt, showing the state of the art of numerical software for OC.

The Generalized Fractional Calculus of Variations

We review the recent generalized fractional calculus of variations. We consider variational problems containing generalized fractional integrals and derivatives and study them using indirect methods. In particular, we provide necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type for the fundamental and isoperimetric problems, natural boundary conditions, and Noether type theorems.

The Legendre Condition of the Fractional Calculus of Variations

Fractional operators play an important role in modeling nonlocal phenomena and problems involving coarse-grained and fractal spaces. The fractional calculus of variations with functionals depending on derivatives and/or integrals of noninteger order is a rather recent subject that is currently in fast development due to its applications in physics and other sciences. In the last decade, several approaches to fractional variational calculus were proposed by using different notions of fractional derivatives and integrals. Although the literature of the fractional calculus of variations is already vast, much remains to be done in obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimization of fractional variational functionals, existence and regularity of solutions. Regarding necessary optimality conditions, all works available in the literature concern the derivation of first-order fractional conditions of Euler-Lagrange type. In this work we obtain a Legendre second-order necessary optimality condition for weak extremizers of a variational functional that depends on fractional derivatives.

Numerical Approximations to Fractional Problems of the Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control

This chapter presents some numerical methods to solve problems in the fractional calculus of variations and fractional optimal control. Although there are plenty of methods available in the literature, we concentrate mainly on approximating the fractional problem either by discretizing the fractional term or expanding the fractional derivatives as a series involving integer order derivatives. The former method, as a subclass of direct methods in the theory of calculus of variations, uses finite differences, Grunwald-Letnikov definition in this case, to discretize the fractional term. Any quadrature rule for integration, regarding the desired accuracy, is then used to discretize the whole problem including constraints. The final task in this method is to solve a static optimization problem to reach approximated values of the unknown functions on some mesh points. The latter method, however, approximates fractional problems by classical ones in which only derivatives of integer order are present. Precisely, two continuous approximations for fractional derivatives by series involving ordinary derivatives are introduced. Local upper bounds for truncation errors are provided and, through some test functions, the accuracy of the approximations are justified. Then we substitute the fractional term in the original problem with these series and transform the fractional problem to an ordinary one. Hereafter, we use indirect methods of classical theory, e.g. Euler-Lagrange equations, to solve the approximated problem. The methods are mainly developed through some concrete examples which either have obvious solutions or the solution is computed using the fractional Euler-Lagrange equation.

Vaccination models and optimal control strategies to dengue

As the development of a dengue vaccine is ongoing, we simulate an hypothetical vaccine as an extra protection to the population. In a first phase, the vaccination process is studied as a new compartment in the model, and different ways of distributing the vaccines investigated: pediatric and random mass vaccines, with distinct levels of efficacy and durability. In a second step, the vaccination is seen as a control variable in the epidemiological process. In both cases, epidemic and endemic scenarios are included in order to analyze distinct outbreak realities.

An expansion formula with higher-order derivatives for fractional operators of variable order

We obtain approximation formulas for fractional integrals and derivatives of Riemann-Liouville and Marchaud types with a variable fractional order. The approximations involve integer-order derivatives only. An estimation for the error is given. The efficiency of the approximation method is illustrated with examples. As applications, we show how the obtained results are useful to solve differential equations and problems of the calculus of variations that depend on fractional derivatives of Marchaud type.
