The Delta-nabla Calculus of Variations for Composition Functionals on Time Scales

We develop the calculus of variations on time scales for a functional that is the composition of a certain scalar function with the delta and nabla integrals of a vector valued field. Euler-Lagrange equations, transversality conditions, and necessary optimality conditions for isoperimetric problems, on an arbitrary time scale, are proved. Interesting corollaries and examples are presented.

A Non-Differentiable Quantum Variational Embedding in Presence of Time Delays

We develop Cresson's non-differentiable embedding to quantum problems of the calculus of variations and optimal control with time delay. Main results show that the dynamics of non-differentiable Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems with time delays can be determined, in a coherent way, by the least-action principle.

Green's Theorem for Generalized Fractional Derivatives

We study three types of generalized partial fractional operators. An extension of Green's theorem, by considering partial fractional derivatives with more general kernels, is proved. New results are obtained, even in the particular case when the generalized operators are reduced to the standard partial fractional derivatives and fractional integrals in the sense of Riemann-Liouville or Caputo.

The DuBois-Reymond Fundamental Lemma of the Fractional Calculus of Variations and an Euler-Lagrange Equation Involving only Derivatives of Caputo

Derivatives and integrals of non-integer order were introduced more than three centuries ago, but only recently gained more attention due to their application on nonlocal phenomena. In this context, the Caputo derivatives are the most popular approach to fractional calculus among physicists, since differential equations involving Caputo derivatives require regular boundary conditions. Motivated by several applications in physics and other sciences, the fractional calculus of variations is currently in fast development. However, all current formulations for the fractional variational calculus fail to give an Euler-Lagrange equation with only Caputo derivatives. In this work, we propose a new approach to the fractional calculus of variations by generalizing the DuBois-Reymond lemma and showing how Euler-Lagrange equations involving only Caputo derivatives can be obtained.

Symmetric Differentiation on Time Scales

We define a symmetric derivative on an arbitrary nonempty closed subset of the real numbers and derive some of its properties. It is shown that real-valued functions defined on time scales that are neither delta nor nabla differentiable can be symmetric differentiable.

Hahn's Symmetric Quantum Variational Calculus

We introduce and develop the Hahn symmetric quantum calculus with applications to the calculus of variations. Namely, we obtain a necessary optimality condition of Euler-Lagrange type and a sufficient optimality condition for variational problems within the context of Hahn's symmetric calculus. Moreover, we show the effectiveness of Leitmann's direct method when applied to Hahn's symmetric variational calculus. Illustrative examples are provided.

Fractional Noether's Theorem with Classical and Riemann-Liouville Derivatives

We prove a Noether type symmetry theorem to fractional problems of the calculus of variations with classical and Riemann-Liouville derivatives. As result, we obtain constants of motion (in the classical sense) that are valid along the mixed classical/fractional Euler-Lagrange extremals. Both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian versions of the Noether theorem are obtained. Finally, we extend our Noether's theorem to more general problems of optimal control with classical and Riemann-Liouville derivatives.

Variable Order Fractional Variational Calculus for Double Integrals

We introduce three types of partial fractional operators of variable order. An integration by parts formula for partial fractional integrals of variable order and an extension of Green's theorem are proved. These results allow us to obtain a fractional Euler-Lagrange necessary optimality condition for variable order two-dimensional fractional variational problems.

Noether's Theorem in the Stochastic Calculus of Variations

We begin by presenting the classical deterministic problems of the calculus of variations, with emphasis on the necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange and the Noether theorem. As examples of application, we obtain the conservation laws of momentum and energy from mechanics, valid along the Euler-Lagrange extremals. We then introduce the stochastic calculus of variations, proving a recent stochastic Noether-type theorem obtained by Cresson. We end by pointing out an interesting open problem.

Numerical Approximations of Fractional Derivatives with Applications

Two approximations, derived from continuous expansions of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives into series involving integer order derivatives, are studied. Using those series, one can formally transform any problem that contains fractional derivatives into a classical problem in which only derivatives of integer order are present. Corresponding approximations provide useful numerical tools to compute fractional derivatives of functions. Application of such approximations to fractional differential equations and fractional problems of the calculus of variations are discussed. Illustrative examples show the advantages and disadvantages of each approximation.

Modeling and Optimal Control Applied to a Vector Borne Disease

A model with six mutually-exclusive compartments related to Dengue disease is presented. In this model there are three vector control tools: insecticides (larvicide and adulticide) and mechanical control. The problem is studied using an Optimal Control (OC) approach. The human data for the model is based on the Cape Verde Dengue outbreak. Some control measures are simulated and their consequences analyzed.

Optimal Control of Nonlocal Thermistor Equations

We are concerned with the optimal control problem of the well known nonlocal thermistor problem, i.e., in studying the heat transfer in the resistor device whose electrical conductivity is strongly dependent on the temperature. Existence of an optimal control is proved. The optimality system consisting of the state system coupled with adjoint equations is derived, together with a characterization of the optimal control. Uniqueness of solution to the optimality system, and therefore the uniqueness of the optimal control, is established. The last part is devoted to numerical simulations.

Towards a combined fractional mechanics and quantization

A fractional Hamiltonian formalism is introduced for the recent combined fractional calculus of variations. The Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equation is generalized to be applicable for systems containing combined Caputo fractional derivatives. The obtained results provide tools to carry out the quantization of nonconservative problems through combined fractional canonical equations of Hamilton type.

Necessary Optimality Conditions for Higher-Order Infinite Horizon Variational Problems on Time Scales

We obtain Euler-Lagrange and transversality optimality conditions for higher-order infinite horizon variational problems on a time scale. The new necessary optimality conditions improve the classical results both in the continuous and discrete settings: our results seem new and interesting even in the particular cases when the time scale is the set of real numbers or the set of integers.

We study the fundamental problem of the calculus of variations with variable order fractional operators. Fractional integrals are considered in the sense of Riemann-Liouville while derivatives are of Caputo type.
