Fractional derivatives in Dengue epidemics

We introduce the use of fractional calculus, i.e., the use of integrals and derivatives of non-integer (arbitrary) order, in epidemiology. The proposed approach is illustrated with an outbreak of dengue disease, which is motivated by the first dengue epidemic ever recorded in the Cape Verde islands off the coast of west Africa, in 2009. Numerical simulations show that in some cases the fractional models fit better the reality when compared with the standard differential models. The classical results are obtained as particular cases by considering the order of the derivatives to take an integer value.

The power quantum calculus and variational problems

We introduce the power difference calculus based on the operator $D_{n,q} f(t) = \frac{f(qt^n)-f(t)}{qt^n -t}$, where $n$ is an odd positive integer and $0<q<1$. Properties of the new operator and its inverse --- the $d_{n,q}$ integral --- are proved. As an application, we consider power quantum Lagrangian systems and corresponding $n,q$-Euler--Lagrange equations.

The Variational Calculus on Time Scales

The discrete, the quantum, and the continuous calculus of variations, have been recently unified and extended by using the theory of time scales. Such unification and extension is, however, not unique, and two approaches are followed in the literature: one dealing with minimization of delta integrals; the other dealing with minimization of nabla integrals. Here we review a more general approach to the calculus of variations on time scales that allows to obtain both delta and nabla results as particular cases.

Fractional variational calculus for nondifferentiable functions

We prove necessary optimality conditions, in the class of continuous functions, for variational problems defined with Jumarie's modified Riemann-Liouville derivative. The fractional basic problem of the calculus of variations with free boundary conditions is considered, as well as problems with isoperimetric and holonomic constraints.

Dengue disease, basic reproduction number and control

Dengue is one of the major international public health concerns. Although progress is underway, developing a vaccine against the disease is challenging. Thus, the main approach to fight the disease is vector control. A model for the transmission of Dengue disease is presented. It consists of eight mutually exclusive compartments representing the human and vector dynamics. It also includes a control parameter (insecticide) in order to fight the mosquito. The model presents three possible equilibria: two disease-free equilibria (DFE) and another endemic equilibrium. It has been proved that a DFE is locally asymptotically stable, whenever a certain epidemiological threshold, known as the basic reproduction number, is less than one. We show that if we apply a minimum level of insecticide, it is possible to maintain the basic reproduction number below unity. A case study, using data of the outbreak that occurred in 2009 in Cape Verde, is presented.

Generalizing the variational theory on time scales to include the delta indefinite integral

We prove necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type for generalized problems of the calculus of variations on time scales with a Lagrangian depending not only on the independent variable, an unknown function and its delta derivative, but also on a delta indefinite integral that depends on the unknown function. Such kind of variational problems were considered by Euler himself and have been recently investigated in [Methods Appl. Anal. 15 (2008), no. 4, 427-435]. Our results not only provide a generalization to previous results, but also give some other interesting optimality conditions as special cases.

Fractional variational problems depending on indefinite integrals

We obtain necessary optimality conditions for variational problems with a Lagrangian depending on a Caputo fractional derivative, a fractional and an indefinite integral. Main results give fractional Euler-Lagrange type equations and natural boundary conditions, which provide a generalization of previous results found in the literature. Isoperimetric problems, problems with holonomic constraints and depending on higher-order Caputo derivatives, as well as fractional Lagrange problems, are considered.

Fractional Calculus of Variations for Double Integrals

We consider fractional isoperimetric problems of calculus of variations with double integrals via the recent modified Riemann-Liouville approach. A necessary optimality condition of Euler-Lagrange type, in the form of a multitime fractional PDE, is proved, as well as a sufficient condition and fractional natural boundary conditions.

Fractional $h$-difference equations arising from the calculus of variations

The recent theory of fractional $h$-difference equations introduced in [N. R. O. Bastos, R. A. C. Ferreira, D. F. M. Torres: Discrete-time fractional variational problems, Signal Process. 91 (2011), no. 3, 513--524], is enriched with useful tools for the explicit solution of discrete equations involving left and right fractional difference operators. New results for the right fractional $h$ sum are proved. Illustrative examples show the effectiveness of the obtained results in solving fractional discrete Euler-Lagrange equations.

Fractional Variational Calculus with Classical and Combined Caputo Derivatives

We give a proper fractional extension of the classical calculus of variations by considering variational functionals with a Lagrangian depending on a combined Caputo fractional derivative and the classical derivative. Euler-Lagrange equations to the basic and isoperimetric problems are proved, as well as transversality conditions.

Composition Functionals in Fractional Calculus of Variations

We prove Euler-Lagrange and natural boundary necessary optimality conditions for fractional problems of the calculus of variations which are given by a composition of functionals. Our approach uses the recent notions of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives and integrals in the sense of Jumarie. As an application, we get optimality conditions for the product and the quotient of fractional variational functionals.
