Backward Linear Control Systems on Time Scales

We show how a linear control systems theory for the backward nabla differential operator on an arbitrary time scale can be obtained via Caputo's duality. More precisely, we consider linear control systems with outputs defined with respect to the backward jump operator. Kalman criteria of controllability and observability, as well as realizability conditions, are proved.

The Second Euler-Lagrange Equation of Variational Calculus on Time Scales

The fundamental problem of the calculus of variations on time scales concerns the minimization of a delta-integral over all trajectories satisfying given boundary conditions. In this paper we prove the second Euler-Lagrange necessary optimality condition for optimal trajectories of variational problems on time scales. As an example of application of the main result, we give an alternative and simpler proof to the Noether theorem on time scales recently obtained in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 342 (2008), no. 2, 1220-1226].

A Discrete Algorithm to the Calculus of Variations

A numerical study of an algorithm proposed by Gusein Guseinov, which determines approximations to the optimal solution of problems of calculus of variations using two discretizations and correspondent Euler-Lagrange equations, is investigated. The results we obtain to discretizations of the brachistochrone problem and Mania example with Lavrentiev's phenomenon are compared with the solutions found by other methods and solvers. We conclude that Guseinov's method presents better solutions in most of the cases studied.

Fractional Noether's theorem in the Riesz-Caputo sense

We prove a Noether's theorem for fractional variational problems with Riesz-Caputo derivatives. Both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations are obtained. Illustrative examples in the fractional context of the calculus of variations and optimal control are given.

Optimization of Dengue Epidemics: a test case with different discretization schemes

The incidence of Dengue epidemiologic disease has grown in recent decades. In this paper an application of optimal control in Dengue epidemics is presented. The mathematical model includes the dynamic of Dengue mosquito, the affected persons, the people's motivation to combat the mosquito and the inherent social cost of the disease, such as cost with ill individuals, educations and sanitary campaigns. The dynamic model presents a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The problem was discretized through Euler and Runge Kutta schemes, and solved using nonlinear optimization packages. The computational results as well as the main conclusions are shown.

A Fractional Calculus of Variations for Multiple Integrals with Application to Vibrating String

We introduce a fractional theory of the calculus of variations for multiple integrals. Our approach uses the recent notions of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives and integrals in the sense of Jumarie. Main results provide fractional versions of the theorems of Green and Gauss, fractional Euler-Lagrange equations, and fractional natural boundary conditions. As an application we discuss the fractional equation of motion of a vibrating string.

Leitmann's direct method of optimization for absolute extrema of certain problems of the calculus of variations on time scales

The fundamental problem of the calculus of variations on time scales concerns the minimization of a delta-integral over all trajectories satisfying given boundary conditions. This includes the discrete-time, the quantum, and the continuous/classical calculus of variations as particular cases. In this note we follow Leitmann's direct method to give explicit solutions for some concrete optimal control problems on an arbitrary time scale.

The delta-nabla calculus of variations

The discrete-time, the quantum, and the continuous calculus of variations have been recently unified and extended. Two approaches are followed in the literature: one dealing with minimization of delta integrals; the other dealing with minimization of nabla integrals. Here we propose a more general approach to the calculus of variations on time scales that allows to obtain both delta and nabla results as particular cases.

Time Scales and Mathematica

Time scales are a model of time, where the continuous and the discrete time cases are considered and merged into the same framework. In this paper some basic definitions of the time scale calculus are presented. Simultaneously, a package in Mathematica is introduced.

A non-classical class of variational problems

We study a new non-classical class of variational problems that is motivated by some recent research on the non-linear revenue problem in the field of economics. This class of problem can be set up as a maximising problem in the Calculus of Variations (CoV) or Optimal Control. However, the state value at the final fixed time, y(T), is a priori unknown and the integrand is a function of the unknown y(T). This is a non-standard CoV problem. In this paper we apply the new costate boundary conditions p(T) in the formulation of the CoV problem. We solve some sample examples in this problem class using the numerical shooting method to solve the resulting TPBVP, and incorporate the free y(T) as an additional unknown. Essentially the same results are obtained using symbolic algebra software.

Avoidance Control on Time Scales

We consider dynamic systems on time scales under the control of two agents. One of the agents desires to keep the state of the system out of a given set regardless of the other agent's actions. Leitmann's avoidance conditions are proved to be valid for dynamic systems evolving on an arbitrary time scale.
