Global dynamics of viscous gaseous stars in a physical vacuum

The study of vacuum is important in understanding compressible flows. In particular, physical vacuum, in which the boundary moves with a nontrivial finite normal acceleration, naturally arises in the study of the motion of gaseous stars. In this paper, we analyze the free boundary problem for the three-dimensional compressible Navier--Stokes--Poisson equations with degenerate viscosities for self-gravitating viscous gaseous stars. For the spherically symmetric and barotropic motion, we establish the global well-posedness of classical solutions without any restriction on the size of the initial data. Our solutions obtained here are smooth all the way up to the moving boundary and capture the physical vacuum boundary behavior of the Lane--Emden star configuration.

On a Local Existence Theorem for the Evolution Equation of Viscous Gaseous Stars in a Physical Vacuum

This paper focuses on the free boundary problem of the three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with degenerate viscosities for self-gravitating viscous gaseous stars. For spherically symmetric barotropic motion, we establish the local well-posedness of classical solutions. The solutions obtained here are smooth all the way up to the moving boundary and capture the physical vacuum boundary behavior of the Lane-Emden star configuration for all adiabatic exponents $\gamma>\frac{4}{3}$.

Homological dimensions over almost gentle algebras

We provide a method for computing the global dimension and self-injective dimension of almost gentle algebras, and prove that an almost gentle algebra is Gorenstein if it satisfies the Auslander condition.

Towards Building Autonomous Data Services on Azure

Modern cloud has turned data services into easily accessible commodities. With just a few clicks, users are now able to access a catalog of data processing systems for a wide range of tasks. However, the cloud brings in both complexity and opportunity. While cloud users can quickly start an application by using various data services, it can be difficult to configure and optimize these services to gain the most value from them. For cloud providers, managing every aspect of an ever-increasing set of data services, while meeting customer SLAs and minimizing operational cost is becoming more challenging. Cloud technology enables the collection of significant amounts of workload traces and system telemetry. With the progress in data science (DS) and machine learning (ML), it is feasible and desirable to utilize a data-driven, ML-based approach to automate various aspects of data services, resulting in the creation of autonomous data services. This paper presents our perspectives and insights on creating autonomous data services on Azure. It also covers the future endeavors we plan to undertake and unresolved issues that still need attention.

Photocatalytic Activity of Pulsed Laser Deposited TiO2 Thin Films

Nanostructured TiO2 thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on indium doped tin oxide (ITO) substrates. Results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that Ti 2p core level peaks shift toward the lower binding energy with decrease in the buffer gas pressure (O2:Ar = 1:1). This suggests that oxygen vacancies are created under insufficient oxygen conditions. Anatase to rutile ratio is also found to be system pressure dependent. Under deposition pressure of 750 mTorr only anatase phase was observed even at 1073 K substrate temperature which is much higher that the bulk anatase to rutile phase transformation temperature. The deposited TiO2 thin films were fabricated as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) studies. PEC measurements on TiO2 photoanodes show that the flatband potential (Vfb) increases by 0.088 eV on absolute vacuum energy scale (AVS) with decrease in the deposition pressure, from 750 to 250 mTorr at 873K. The highest incident photon to current conversion efficiency [IPCE(lambda)] of 2.5 to 6 % was obtained from the thin films prepared at substrate temperature of 873K. Combining the results from XPS and PEC studies, we conclude that the deposition pressure affects the concentration of the oxygen vacancies which changes the electronic structure of the TiO2. With reference to photoelectrochemical catalytic performance, our results suggest that it is possible to adjust the Fermi energy level and structure of TiO2 thin films by controlling the buffer gas pressure and temperature to align the energy of the flatband potential (Vfb) with respect to specific redox species in the electrolyte.
