Theoretical model of HD 163296 presently forming in-situ planets and comparison with the models of AS 209, HL Tau, and TW Hya

We fit an isothermal oscillatory density model to the disk of HD 163296 in which planets have presumably already formed and they are orbiting at least within the four observed dark gaps. This 156 AU large axisymmetric disk shows various physical properties comparable to those of AS 209, HL Tau, and TW Hya that we have modeled previously; but it compares best to AS 209. The disks of HD 163296 and AS 209 are comparable in size and they share similar values of the power-law index $k\approx 0$ (a radial density profile of the form $ρ(R)\propto R^{-1}$), the rotational parameter $β_0$ (to within a factor of 3); a relatively small inner core radius (although this parameter for HD 163296 is exceptionally small, $R_1\simeq 0.15$ AU, presumably due to unresolved planets in the inner 50 AU); the scale length $R_0$ and the Jeans gravitational frequency $Ω_J$ (to within factors of 1.4); the equation of state ($c_0^2/ρ_0$) and the central density $ρ_0$ (to within factors of 2); and the core angular velocity $Ω_0$ (to within a factor of 4.5). In the end, we compare all six nebular disks that we have modeled so far.

Gauss's Law and the Source for Poisson's Equation in Modified Gravity with Varying G

We have recently shown that the baryonic Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations imply that the gravitational "constant" $G$ in the force law varies with acceleration $a$ as $G\propto 1/a$ and vice versa. These results prompt us to reconsider every facet of Newtonian dynamics. Here we show that the integral form of Gauss's law in spherical symmetry remains valid in $G(a)$ gravity, but the differential form depends on the precise distribution of $G(a)M(r)$, where $r$ is the distance from the origin and $M(r)$ is the mass distribution. We derive the differential form of Gauss's law in spherical symmetry, thus the source for Poisson's equation as well. Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) and weak-field Weyl gravity are asymptotic limits of $G(a)$ gravity at low and high accelerations, respectively. In these limits, we derive telling approximations to the source in spherical symmetry. It turns out that the source has a strong dependence on surface density $M/r^2$ everywhere in $a$-space except in the deep Newton-Weyl regime of very high accelerations.

Binary black hole growth by gas accretion in stellar clusters

We show that binaries of stellar-mass black holes formed inside a young protoglobular cluster, can grow rapidly inside the cluster's core by accretion of the intracluster gas, before the gas may be depleted from the core. A black hole with mass of the order of eight solar masses can grow to values of the order of thirty five solar masses in accordance with recent gravitational waves signals observed by LIGO. Due to the black hole mass increase, a binary may also harden. The growth of binary black holes in a dense protoglobular cluster through mass accretion indicates a potentially important formation and hardening channel.

Gravitational Potential and Nonrelativistic Lagrangian in Modified Gravity with Varying G

We have recently shown that the baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) and Faber-Jackson (BFJ) relations imply that the gravitational "constant" $G$ in the force law vary with acceleration $a$ as $1/a$. Here we derive the converse from first principles. First we obtain the gravitational potential for all accelerations and we formulate the Lagrangian for the central-force problem. Then action minimization implies the BTF/BFJ relations in the deep MOND limit as well as weak-field Weyl gravity in the Newtonian limit. The results show how we can properly formulate a nonrelativistic conformal theory of modified dynamics that reduces to MOND in its low-acceleration limit and to Weyl gravity in the opposite limit. An unavoidable conclusion is that $a_0$, the transitional acceleration in modified dynamics, does not have a cosmological origin and it may not even be constant among galaxies and galaxy clusters.

A no-hair theorem for spherically symmetric black holes in $R^2$ gravity

In a recent paper Cañate (CQG, {\bf 35}, 025018 (2018)) proved a no hair theorem to static and spherically symmetric or stationary axisymmetric black holes in general $f(R)$ gravity. The theorem applies for isolated asymptotically flat or asymptotically de Sitter black holes and also in the case when vacuum is replaced by a minimally coupled source having a traceless energy momentum tensor. This theorem excludes the case of pure quadratic gravity, $f(R) = R^2$. In this paper we use the scalar tensor representation of general $f(R)$ theory to show that there are no hairy black hole in pure $R^2$ gravity. The result is limited to spherically symmetric black holes but does not assume asymptotic flatness or de-Sitter asymptotics as in most of the no-hair theorems encountered in the literature. We include an example of a static and spherically symmetric black hole in $R^2$ gravity with a conformally coupled scalar field having a Higgs-type quartic potential.

Accretion Disk MHD Winds and Blazar Classification

The Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope observations of blazars show a strong correlation between the spectral index of their gamma-ray spectra and their synchrotron peak frequency $ν_{\rm{pk}}^{\rm{syn}}$; additionally, the rate of Compton Dominance of these sources also seems to be a function of $ν_{\rm{pk}}^{\rm{syn}}$. In this work, we adopt the assumption that the nonthermal emission of blazars is primarily due to radiation by a population of Fermi-accelerated electrons in a relativistic outflow (jet) along the symmetry axis of the blazar's accretion disk. Furthermore, we assume that the Compton component is related to an external photon field of photons, which are scattered from particles of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wind emanating from the accretion disk. Our results reproduce well the aforementioned basic observational trends of blazar classification by varying just one parameter, namely the mass accretion rate onto the central black hole.

Variable Nature of Magnetically-Driven Ultra-Fast Outflows

Among a number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that drive ionized outflows in X-rays, a low-redshift (z = 0.184) quasar, PDS 456, is long known to exhibit one of the exemplary ultra-fast outflows (UFOs). However, the physical process of acceleration mechanism is yet to be definitively constrained. In this work, we model the variations of the Fe K UFO properties in PDS 456 over many epochs in X-ray observations in the context of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion-disk winds employed in our earlier studies of similar X-ray absorbers. We applied the model to the 2013/2014 XMM-Newton/NuSTAR spectra to determine the UFO's condition; namely, velocity, ionization parameter, column density and equivalent width (EW). Under some provisions on the dependence of X-ray luminosity on the accretion rate applicable to near-Eddington state, our photoionization calculations, coupled to a 2.5-dimensional MHD-driven wind model, can further reproduce the observed correlations of the UFO velocity and the anti-correlation of its EW with X-ray strength of PDS 456. This work demonstrates that UFOs, even without radiative pressure, can be driven as an extreme case purely by magnetic interaction while also producing the observed spectrum and correlations.

Interposing a Varying Gravitational Constant Between Modified Newtonian Dynamics and Weak Weyl Gravity

The Newtonian gravitational constant $G$ obeys the dimensional relation $[G] [M] [a] = [v]^4$, where $M$, $a$, and $v$ denote mass, acceleration, and speed, respectively. Since the baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) and Faber-Jackson (BFJ) relations are observed facts, this relation implies that $G\, a = {\rm constant}$. This result cannot be obtained in Newtonian dynamics which cannot explain the origin of the BTF and BFJ relations. An alternative, modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) assumes that $G=G_0$ is constant in space and derives naturally a characteristic constant acceleration $a=a_0$, as well as the BTF and BFJ relations. This is overkill and it comes with a penalty: MOND cannot explain the origin of $a_0$. A solid physical resolution of this issue is that $G \propto a^{-1}$, which implies that in lower-acceleration environments the gravitational force is boosted relative to its Newtonian value because $G$ increases. This eliminates all problems related to MOND's empirical cutoff $a_0$ and yields a quantitative method for mapping the detailed variations of $G(a)$ across each individual galaxy as well as on larger and smaller scales. On the opposite end, the large accelerations produced by $G(a)$ appear to be linked to the weak-field limit of the fourth-order theory of conformal Weyl gravity.

3D Kinetic Pulsar Magnetosphere Models: Connecting to Gamma-Ray Observations

We present 3D global kinetic pulsar magnetosphere models, where the charged particle trajectories and the corresponding electromagnetic fields are treated self-consistently. For our study, we have developed a cartesian 3D relativistic particle-in-cell code that incorporates the radiation reaction forces. We describe our code and discuss the related technical issues, treatments, and assumptions. Injecting particles up to large distances in the magnetosphere, we apply arbitrarily low to high particle injection rates and get an entire spectrum of solutions from close to the Vacuum-Retarded-Dipole to close to the Force-Free solution, respectively. For high particle injection rates (close to FF solutions) significant accelerating electric field components are confined only near the equatorial current sheet outside the light-cylinder. A judicious interpretation of our models allows the calculation of the particle emission and consequently the derivation of the corresponding realistic high-energy sky-maps and spectra. Using model parameters that cover the entire range of spin-down powers of Fermi young and millisecond pulsars, we compare the corresponding model $γ$-ray light-curves, cutoff energies, and total $γ$-ray luminosities with those observed by Fermi to discover a dependence of the particle injection-rate, $\mathcal{F}$, on the spin-down power, $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$, indicating an increase of $\mathcal{F}$ with $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$. Our models guided by Fermi observations provide field-structures and particle distributions that are not only consistent with each other but also able to reproduce a broad range of the observed $γ$-ray phenomenology of both young and millisecond pulsars.

Electron positron pair flow and current composition in the pulsar magnetosphere

We performed ab-initio Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations of a pulsar magnetosphere with electron-positron plasma produced only in the regions close to the neutron star surface. We study how the magnetosphere transitions from the vacuum to a nearly force-free configuration. We compare the resulting force-free like configuration with ones obtained in a PIC simulation where particles are injected everywhere as well as with macroscopic force-free simulations. We found that although both PIC solutions have similar structure of electromagnetic fields and current density distributions, they have different particle density distribution. In fact in the injection from the surface solution, electrons and positrons counterstream only along parts of the return current regions and most of the particles leave the magnetosphere without returning to the star. We also found that pair production in the outer magnetosphere is not critical for filling the whole magnetosphere with plasma. We study how the current density distribution supporting the global electromagnetic configuration is formed by analyzing particle trajectories. We found that electrons precipitate to the return current layer inside the light cylinder and positrons precipitate to the current sheet outside the light cylinder by crossing magnetic field lines contributing to the charge density distribution required by the global electrodynamics. Moreover, there is a population of electrons trapped in the region close to the Y-point. On the other hand the most energetic positrons are accelerated close to the Y-point. These processes can have observational signatures that, with further modeling efforts, would help to distinguish this particular magnetosphere configuration from others.

Magnetized Disk-Winds in NGC 3783

We analyze a 900-ks stacked Chandra/HETG spectrum of NGC 3783 in the context of magnetically-driven accretion-disk wind models in an effort to provide tight constraints on the global conditions of the underlying absorbers. Motivated by the earlier measurements of its absorption measure distribution (AMD) indicating X-ray-absorbing ionic columns that decrease slowly with decreasing ionization parameter, we employ 2D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disk-wind models to describe the global outflow. We compute its photoionization structure along with the wind kinematic properties allowing us to further calculate in a self-consistent fashion the shapes of the major X-ray absorption lines. With the wind radial density profile determined by the AMD, the profiles of the ensemble of the observed absorption features are determined by the two global parameters of the MHD wind; i.e. disk inclination θ_obs and wind density normalization n_o. Considering the most significant absorption features in the (~1.8A-20A) range, we show that the MHD-wind is best described by n(r)~6.9e11(r/ro)^-1.15 [cm^-3] and θ_obs=44deg. We argue that winds launched by X-ray heating, radiation pressure or even MHD winds but with steeper radial density profiles are strongly disfavored by data. Considering the properties of Fe K band absorption features (i.e. Fe xxv and Fe xxvi), while typically prominent in the AGN X-ray spectra, they appear to be weak in NGC 3783. For the specific parameters of our model obtained by fitting the AMD and the rest of absorption features, these features are found to be weak in agreement with observation.

New Bound Closed Orbits in Spherical Potentials

We present new families of bound, closed, nonelliptical orbits that are supported by various spherical potentials in clear contradiction to Newton's and Bertrand's theorems. We calculate analytically some typical closed orbits of arbitrarily large amplitudes for the spherically symmetric forms of the Newton-Kepler, Hooke, and linear potentials. In all cases, the radial oscillations of the orbits exhibit unequal amplitudes and nonsynchronous frequencies on either side of a circular equilibrium orbit. These parameters are however related through energy conservation and orbit continuity across the equilibrium orbit. The constraints placed on the parameters are all localized to each particular orbit and depend crucially on the chosen initial conditions.

A Physical Interpretation of the Titius-Bode Rule and its Connection to the Closed Orbits of Bertrand's Theorem

We consider the geometric Titius-Bode rule for the semimajor axes of planetary orbits. We derive an equivalent rule for the midpoints of the segments between consecutive orbits along the radial direction and we interpret it physically in terms of the work done in the gravitational field of the Sun by particles whose orbits are perturbed around each planetary orbit. On such energetic grounds, it is not surprising that some exoplanets in multiple-planet extrasolar systems obey the same relation. But it is surprising that this simple interpretation of the Titius-Bode rule also reveals new properties of the bound closed orbits predicted by Bertrand's theorem and known since 1873.

Magnetically Advected Winds

Observations of X-ray absorption lines in magnetically driven disk winds around black hole binaries and active galactic nuclei yield a universal radial density profile rho proportional to r^{-1.2} in the wind. This is in disagreement with the standard Blandford & Payne profile rho_BP proportional to r^{-1.5} expected when the magnetic field is neither advected nor diffusing through the accretion disk. In order to account for this discrepancy, we establish a new paradigm for magnetically driven astrophysical winds according to which the large scale ordered magnetic field that threads the disk is continuously generated by the Cosmic Battery around the inner edge of the disk and continuously diffuses outward. We obtain self-similar solutions of such magnetically advected winds (MAW) and discuss their observational ramifications.

Numerical simulations of the Cosmic Battery in accretion flows around astrophysical black holes

We implement the KORAL code to perform two sets of very long general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations of an axisymmetric optically thin magnetized flow around a non-rotating black hole: one with a new term in the electromagnetic field tensor due to the radiation pressure felt by the plasma electrons on the comoving frame of the electron-proton plasma, and one without. The source of the radiation is the accretion flow itself. Without the new term, the system evolves to a standard accretion flow due to the development of the magneto-rotational instability (MRI). With the new term, however, the system eventually evolves to a magnetically arrested state (MAD) in which a large scale jet-like magnetic field threads the black hole horizon. Our results confirm the secular action of the Cosmic Battery in accretion flows around astrophysical black holes.

Fermi Gamma-Ray Pulsars: Understanding the High-Energy Emission from Dissipative Magnetospheres

Based on the Fermi observational data we reveal meaningful constraints for the dependence of the macroscopic conductivity $(σ)$ of dissipative pulsar magnetosphere models on the corresponding spin-down rate, $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$. Our models are refinements of the FIDO (Force-Free Inside, Dissipative Outside) models whose dissipative regions are restricted on the equatorial current-sheet outside the light-cylinder. Taking into account the observed cutoff-energies of all the Fermi-pulsars and assuming that a) the corresponding $γ-$ray pulsed emission is due to curvature radiation at the radiation-reaction-limit regime and b) this emission is produced at the equatorial current-sheet near the light-cylinder, we show that the \emph{Fermi}-data provide clear indications about the corresponding accelerating electric-field components. A direct comparison between the \emph{Fermi} cutoff-energies and the model ones reveals that $σ$ increases with $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$ for high $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$-values while it saturates for low ones. This comparison indicates also that the corresponding gap-width increases toward low $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$-values. Assuming the Goldreich-Julian flux for the emitting particles we calculate the total $γ-$ray luminosity $(L_γ)$. A comparison between the dependence of the Fermi $L_γ$-values and the model ones on $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$ indicates an increase of the emitting particle multiplicity with $\dot{\mathcal{E}}$. Our modeling guided by the \emph{Fermi}-data alone, enhances our understanding of the physical mechanisms behind the high energy emission in pulsar magnetospheres.

Magnetic Origin of Black Hole Winds Across the Mass Scale

Black hole accretion disks appear to produce invariably plasma outflows that result in blue-shifted absorption features in their spectra. The X-ray absorption-line properties of these outflows are quite diverse, ranging in velocity from non-relativistic ($\sim 300$ km/sec) to sub-relativistic ($\sim 0.1c$ where $c$ is the speed of light) and a similarly broad range in the ionization states of the wind plasma. We report here that semi-analytic, self-similar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wind models that have successfully accounted for the X-ray absorber properties of supermassive black holes, also fit well the high-resolution X-ray spectrum of the accreting stellar-mass black hole, GRO J1655-40. This provides an explicit theoretical argument of their MHD origin (aligned with earlier observational claims) and supports the notion of a universal magnetic structure of the observed winds across all known black hole sizes.

Exact Axisymmetric Solutions of the 2-D Lane-Emden Equations with Rotation

We have derived exact axisymmetric solutions of the two-dimensional Lane-Emden equations with rotation. These solutions are intrinsically favored by the differential equations regardless of any adopted boundary conditions and the physical solutions of the Cauchy problem are bound to oscillate about and remain close to these intrinsic solutions. The isothermal solutions are described by power-law density profiles in the radial direction, whereas the polytropic solutions are described by radial density profiles that are powers of the zeroth-order Bessel function of the first kind. Both families of solutions decay exponentially in the vertical direction and both result in increasing or nearly flat radial rotation curves. The results are applicable to gaseous spiral-galaxy disks that exhibit flat rotation curves and to the early stages of protoplanetary disk formation before the central star is formed.
