Extremal properties of the variance and the quantum Fisher information

We show that the variance is its own concave roof. For rank-2 density matrices and operators with zero diagonal elements in the eigenbasis of the density matrix, we prove analytically that the quantum Fisher information is four times the convex roof of the variance. Strong numerical evidence suggests that this statement is true even for operators with nonzero diagonal elements or density matrices with a rank larger than 2. We also find that within the different types of generalized quantum Fisher information considered in [D. Petz, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35, 929 (2002); P. Gibilisco, F. Hiai, and D. Petz, IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 55, 439 (2009)], after appropriate normalization, the quantum Fisher information is the largest. Hence, we conjecture that the quantum Fisher information is four times the convex roof of the variance even for the general case.

Families of completely positive maps associated with monotone metrics

An operator convex function on (0,\infty) which satisfies the symmetry condition k(1/x) = x k(x) can be used to define a type of non-commutative multiplication by a positive definite matrix (or its inverse) using the primitive concepts of left and right multiplication and the functional calculus. The operators for the inverse can be used to define quadratic forms associated with Riemannian metrics which contract under the action of completely positive trace-preserving maps. We study the question of when these operators define maps which are also completely positive (CP). Although A --> D^{-1/2} A D^{-1/2} is the only case for which both the map and its inverse are CP, there are several well-known one parameter families for which either the map or its inverse is CP. We present a complete analysis of the behavior of these families, as well as the behavior of lines connecting an extreme point with the smallest one and some results for geometric bridges between these points. Our primary tool is an order relation based on the concept of positive definite functions. Although some results can be obtained from known properties, we also prove new results based on the positivity of the Fourier transforms of certain functions. Concrete computations of certain Fourier transforms not only yield new examples of positive definite functions, but also examples in the much stronger class of infinitely divisible functions.

Convexity of quasi-entropy type functions: Lieb's and Ando's convexity theorems revisited

Given a positive function $f$ on $(0,\infty)$ and a non-zero real parameter $\theta$, we consider a function $I_f^\theta(A,B,X)=Tr X^*(f(L_AR_B^{-1})R_B)^\theta(X)$ in three matrices $A,B>0$ and $X$. In the literature $\theta=\pm1$ has been typical. The concept unifies various quantum information quantities such as quasi-entropy, monotone metrics, etc. We characterize joint convexity/concavity and monotonicity properties of the function $I_f^\theta$, thus unifying some known results for various quantum quantities.

Efficient quantum tomography needs complementary and symmetric measurements

In this study the determinant of the average quadratic error matrix is used as the measure of state estimation efficiency. This quantity is easily computable in some cases, so it gives us a reasonable tool to find optimal measurement setup for different quantum tomography problems. We present numerous applications for a single qubit when von Neumann measurements or a single POVM is used and a part of the parameters of the state is given. Under some restriction the optimality is found for $n$-level system as well. The optimal measurements have some complementary relation to each other or to the known datas, moreover, symmetric informationally complete systems appear, the conditional version seems to be new.

Completely positive mappings and mean matrices

Some real functions f induce mean of positive numbers and the matrix monotonicity gives a possibility for means of positive definite matrices. Moreover, such a function f can define linear mapping beta on matrices (which is basic in the constructions of monotone metrics). The present subject is to check the complete positivity of beta in the case of a few concrete functions f. This problem has been motivated by applications in quantum information.

From quasi-entropy

The subject is the overview of the use of quasi-entropy in finite dimensional spaces. Matrix monotone functions and relative modular operators are used. The origin is the relative entropy and the f-divergence, monotone metrics, covariance and the chi-square-divergence are the most important particular cases. The extension of the monotone metric to two variables is a new concept.

Introduction to quantum Fisher information

The subject of this paper is a mathematical transition from the Fisher information of classical statistics to the matrix formalism of quantum theory. If the monotonicity is the main requirement, then there are several quantum versions parametrized by a function. In physical applications the minimal is the most popular. There is a one-to-one correspondence between Fisher informations (called also monotone metrics) and abstract covariances. The skew information and the chi-square-divergence are treated here as particular cases.

Strongly subadditive functions

Let f be a function defined on positive numbers. The subject is the trace inequality $Tr f(A) + Tr f(P_2AP_2) \le Tr f(P_{12}AP_{12}) + \Tr f(P_{23}AP_{23})$, where $A$ is a positive operator, $P_1,P_2,P_3$ are orthogonal projections such that $P_1+P_2+P_3=I$, $P_{12}=P_1+P_2$ and $P_{23}=P_2+P_3$. There are several examples of functions f satisfying the inequality (called (SSA)) and the case of equality is described.

From f-divergence to quantum quasi-entropies and their use

Csiszar's f-divergence of two probability distributions was extended to the quantum case by the author in 1985. In the quantum setting positive semidefinite matrices are in the place of probability distributions and the quantum generalization is called quasi-entropy which is related to some other important concepts as covariance, quadratic costs, Fisher information, Cramer-Rao inequality and uncertainty relation. A conjecture about the scalar curvature of a Fisher information geometry is explained. The described subjects are overviewed in details in the matrix setting, but at the very end the von Neumann algebra approach is sketched shortly.

Markov triplets on CCR-algebras

The paper contains a detailed computation about the algebra of canonical commutation relation, the representation of the Weyl unitaries, the quasi-free states and their von Neumann entropy. The Markov triplet is defined by constant entropy increase. The Markov property of a quasi-free state is described by the representing block matrix. The proof is based on results on the statistical sufficiency in the quantum case. The relation to classical Gaussian Markov triplets is also described.

Generalizations of Pauli channels

The Pauli channel acting on 2 x 2 matrices is generalized to an n-level quantum system. When the full matrix algebra M is decomposed into pairwise complementary subalgebras, then trace-preserving linear mappings from M to M are constructed such that the restriction to the subalgebras are depolarizing channels. The result is the necessary and sufficient condition of complete positivity. The main examples appear on bipartite systems

Free energy density for mean field perturbation of states of a one-dimensional spin chain

Motivated by recent developments on large deviations in states of the spin chain, we reconsider the work of Petz, Raggio and Verbeure in 1989 on the variational expression of free energy density in the presence of a mean field type perturbation. We extend their results from the product state case to the Gibbs state case in the setting of translation-invariant interactions of finite range. In the special case of a locally faithful quantum Markov state, we clarify the relation between two different kinds of free energy densities (or pressure functions).

From quasi-entropy to skew information

This paper gives an overview about particular quasi-entropies, generalized quantum covariances, quantum Fisher informations, skew-informations and their relations. The point is the dependence on operator monotone functions. It is proven that a skew-information is the Hessian of a quasi-entropy. The skew-information and some inequalities are extended to a von Neumann algebra setting.

Quantum covariance, quantum Fisher information and the uncertainty principle

In this paper the relation between quantum covariances and quantum Fisher informations are studied. This study is applied to generalize a recently proved uncertainty relation based on quantum Fisher information. The proof given hereconsiderably simplifies the previously proposed proofs and leads to more general inequalities.

Complementary reductions for two qubits

In connection with optimal state determination for two qubits, the question was raised about the maximum number of pairwise complementary reductions. The main result of the paper tells that the maximum number is 4, that is, if A1, A2,... Ak are pairwise complementary (or quasi-orthogonal) subalgebras of the algebra of all 4x4$ matrices and they are isomorphic to the algebra of all 2x2 matrices, then k is at most 4. In the way to this result, contributions are made to the understanding of the structure of complementary reductions.

Complementarity in quantum systems

Reduction of a state of a quantum system to a subsystem gives partial quantum information about the true state of the total system. Two subalgebras A1 and A2 of B(H) are called complementary if the traceless subspaces of A1 and A2 are orthogonal (with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product). When both subalgebras are maximal Abelian, then the concept reduces to complementary observables or mutually unbiased bases. In the paper several characterizations of complementary subalgebras are given in the general case and several examples are presented. For a 4-level quantum system, the structure of complementary subalgebras can be described very well, the Cartan decomposition of unitaries plays a role. It turns out that a measurement corresponding to the Bell basis is complementary to any local measurement of the two-qubit-system.

Sufficiency in quantum statistical inference. A survey with examples

This paper attempts to give an overview about sufficiency in the setting of quantum statistics. The basic concepts are treated paralelly to the the measure theoretic case. It turns out that several classical examples and results have a non-commutative analogue. Some of the results are presented without proof (but with exact references) and the presentation is intended to be self-contained. The main examples discussed in the paper are related the Weyl algebra and to the exponential family of states. The characterization of sufficiency in terms of quantum Fisher information is a new result.

Contractivity of positive and trace preserving maps under $L_p$ norms

We provide a complete picture of contractivity of trace preserving positive maps with respect to $p$-norms. We show that for $p>1$ contractivity holds in general if and only if the map is unital. When the domain is restricted to the traceless subspace of Hermitian matrices, then contractivity is shown to hold in the case of qubits for arbitrary $p\geq 1$ and in the case of qutrits if and only if $p=1,\infty$. In all non-contractive cases best possible bounds on the $p$-norms are derived.
