Perturbed Three Vortex Dynamics

It is well known that the dynamics of three point vortices moving in an ideal fluid in the plane can be expressed in Hamiltonian form, where the resulting equations of motion are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville and Arnold. The focus of this investigation is on the persistence of regular behavior (especially periodic motion) associated to completely integrable systems for certain (admissible) kinds of Hamiltonian perturbations of the three vortex system in a plane. After a brief survey of the dynamics of the integrable planar three vortex system, it is shown that the admissible class of perturbed systems is broad enough to include three vortices in a half-plane, three coaxial slender vortex rings in three-space, and `restricted' four vortex dynamics in a plane. Included are two basic categories of results for admissible perturbations: (i) general theorems for the persistence of invariant tori and periodic orbits using Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser and Poincare-Birkhoff type arguments; and (ii) more specific and quantitative conclusions of a classical perturbation theory nature guaranteeing the existence of periodic orbits of the perturbed system close to cycles of the unperturbed system, which occur in abundance near centers. In addition, several numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the validity of the theorems as well as indicating their limitations as manifested by transitions to chaotic dynamics.

Pitchfork Bifurcations of Invariant Manifolds

A pitchfork bifurcation of an $(m-1)$-dimensional invariant submanifold of a dynamical system in $\mathbb{R}^m$ is defined analogous to that in $\mathbb{R}$. Sufficient conditions for such a bifurcation to occur are stated and existence of the bifurcated manifolds is proved under the stated hypotheses. For discrete dynamical systems, the existence of locally attracting manifolds $M_+$ and $M_-$, after the bifurcation has taken place is proved by constructing a diffeomorphism of the unstable manifold $M$. For continuous dynamical systems, the theorem is proved by transforming it to the discrete case. Techniques used for proving the theorem involve differential topology and analysis. The theorem is illustrated by means of a canonical example.

Versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator

If we are given a smooth differential operator in the variable $x\in {\mathbb R}/2π{\mathbb Z},$ its normal form, as is well known, is the simplest form obtainable by means of the $\mbox{Diff}(S^1)$-group action on the space of all such operators. A versal deformation of this operator is a normal form for some parametric infinitesimal family including the operator. Our study is devoted to analysis of versal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator using the theory of induced $\mbox{Diff}(S^1)$-actions endowed with centrally extended Lie-Poisson brackets. After constructing a general expression for tranversal deformations of a Dirac type differential operator, we interpret it via the Lie-algebraic theory of induced $\mbox{Diff}(S^1)$-actions on a special Poisson manifold and determine its generic moment mapping. Using a Marsden-Weinstein reduction with respect to certain Casimir generated distributions, we describe a wide class of versally deformed Dirac type differential operators depending on complex parameters.

New mathematical models for particle flow dynamics

A new class of integro-partial differential equation models is derived for the prediction of granular flow dynamics. These models are obtained using a novel limiting averaging method (inspired by techniques employed in the derivation of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems models) on the Newtonian equations of motion of a many-particle system incorporating widely used inelastic particle-particle force formulas. By using Taylor series expansions, these models can be approximated by a system of partial differential equations of the Navier-Stokes type. The exact or approximate governing equations obtained are far from simple, but they are less complicated than most of the continuum models now being used to predict particle flow behavior. Solutions of the new models for granular flows down inclined planes and in vibrating beds are compared with known experimental and analytical results and good agreement is obtained.

The integrability of Lie-invariant geometric objects generated by ideals in the Grassmann algebra

We investigate closed ideals in the Grassmann algebra serving as bases of Lie-invariant geometric objects studied before by E. Cartan. Especially, the E. Cartan theory is enlarged for Lax integrable nonlinear dynamical systems to be treated in the frame work of the Wahlquist Estabrook prolongation structures on jet-manifolds and Cartan-Ehresmann connection theory on fibered spaces. General structure of integrable one-forms augmenting the two-forms associated with a closed ideal in the Grassmann algebra is studied in great detail. An effective Maurer-Cartan one-forms construction is suggested that is very useful for applications. As an example of application the developed Lie-invariant geometric object theory for the Burgers nonlinear dynamical system is considered having given rise to finding an explicit form of the associated Lax type representation.
