Exotic eigenvalues and analytic resolvent for a graph with a shrinking edge

We consider a metric graph consisting of two edges, one of which has length $\varepsilon$ which we send to zero. On this graph we study the resolvent and spectrum of the Laplacian subject to a general vertex condition at the connecting vertex. Despite the singular nature of the perturbation (by a short edge), we find that the resolvent depends analytically on the parameter $\varepsilon$. In contrast, the negative eigenvalues escape to minus infinity at rates that could be fractional, namely, $\varepsilon^0$, $\varepsilon^{-2/3}$ or $\varepsilon^{-1}$. These rates take place when the corresponding eigenfunction localizes, respectively, only on the long edge, on both edges, or only on the short edge.

Operator estimates for non-periodically perforated domains with Dirichlet and nonlinear Robin conditions: strange term

We consider a boundary value problem for a general second order linear equation in a domain with a fine perforation. The latter is made by small cavities; both the shapes of the cavities and their distribution are arbitrary. The boundaries of the cavities are subject either to a Dirichlet or a nonlinear Robin condition. On the perforation, certain rather weak conditions are imposed to ensure that under the homogenization we obtain a similar problem in a non-perforated domain with an additional potential in the equation usually called a strange term. Our main results state the convergence of the solution of the perturbed problem to that of the homogenized one in $W_2^1$- and $L_2$-norms uniformly in $L_2$-norm of the right hand side in the equation. The estimates for the convergence rates are established and their order sharpness is discussed.

Arnold's potentials and quantum catastrophes II

The well known phenomenon of avoided level crossing (ALC) can be perceived as a quantum analogue of the Thom's catastrophes in classical dynamical systems. One-dimensional Schrödinger equation is chosen for illustration. In constructive manner, a family of confining polynomial potentials is considered, characterized by the presence of an $N-$plet of high barriers separating the $(N+1)-$plet of deep valleys. The bifurcations of the long-time classical equilibria are shown paralleled by the ALCs in the quantum low-lying spectra. Every tunneling-controlled fine-tuned switch of dominance between the valleys is finally interpreted as a change of the topological structure of the probability density representing a genuine quantum relocalization catastrophe.

On spectra of convolution operators with potentials

This paper focuses on the spectral properties of a bounded self-adjoint operator in $L_2(\mathds R^d)$ being the sum of a convolution operator with an integrable convolution kernel and an operator of multiplication by a continuous potential converging to zero at infinity. We study both the essential and the discrete spectra of this operator. It is shown that the essential spectrum of the sum is the union of the essential spectrum of the convolution operator and the image of the potential. We then provide a number of sufficient conditions for the existence of discrete spectrum and obtain lower and upper bounds for the number of discrete eigenvalues. Special attention is paid to the case of operators possessing countably many points of the discrete spectrum. We also compare the spectral properties of the operators considered in this work with those of classical Schrödinger operators.

Approximation of point interactions by geometric perturbations in two-dimensional domains

We present a new type of approximation of a second-order elliptic operator in a planar domain with a point interaction. It is of a geometric nature, the approximating family consists of operators with the same symbol and regular coefficients on the domain with a small hole. At the boundary of it Robin condition is imposed with the coefficient which depends on the linear size of a hole. We show that as the hole shrinks to a point and the parameter in the boundary condition is scaled in a suitable way, nonlinear and singular, the indicated family converges in the norm-resolvent sense to the operator with the point interaction. This resolvent convergence is established with respect to several operator norms and order-sharp estimates of the convergence rates are provided.

Anomalous mechanisms of the loss of observability in non-Hermitian quantum models

Quantum phase transitions in certain non-Hermitian systems controlled by non-tridiagonal Hamiltonian matrices are found anomalous. In contrast to the known models with tridiagonal-matrix structure in which the geometric multiplicity of the completely degenerate energy eigenvalue appears always equal to one, this multiplicity is found larger than one in the present models. The phenomenon is interpreted as a confluence of several decoupled Kato's exceptional points of equal or different orders.

Spectral localization for quantum Hamiltonians with weak random delta interaction

We consider a negative Laplacian in multi-dimensional Euclidean space (or a multi-dimensional layer) with a weak disorder random perturbation. The perturbation consists of a sum of lattice translates of a delta interaction supported on a compact manifold of co-dimension one and modulated by coupling constants which are independent identically distributed random variables times a small disorder parameter. We establish that the spectrum of the considered operator is almost surely a fixed set, characerize its minimum, give an initial length scale estimate and the Wegner estimate and conclude that there is a small zone of a pure point spectrum containing the almost sure spectral bottom. The length of this zone is proportional to the small disorder parameter.

Two patterns of PT-symmetry breakdown in a non-numerical six-state simulation

Three-parametric family of non-Hermitian but ${\cal PT}-$symmetric six-by-six matrix Hamiltonians $H^{(6)}(x,y,z)$ is considered. The ${\cal PT}-$symmetry remains spontaneously unbroken (i.e., the spectrum of the bound-state energies remains real so that the unitary-evolution stability of the quantum system in question is shown guaranteed) in a non-empty domain ${\cal D}^{(physical)}$ of parameters $x,y,z$. The construction of the exceptional-point (EP) boundary $\partial{\cal D}^{(physical)}$ of the physical domain is preformed using an innovative non-numerical implicit-function-construction strategy. The topology of the resulting EP boundary of the spontaneous ${\cal PT}-$symmetry breakdown (i.e., of the physical "horizon of stability") is shown similar to its much more elementary $N=4$ predecessor. Again, it is shown to consist of two components, viz., of the region of the quantum phase transitions of the first kind (during which at least some of the energies become complex) and of the quantum phase transitions of the second kind (during which some of the level pairs only cross but remain real).

Resonant interaction of $ϕ^4$ kink with spatially periodic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation

The resonant interaction of the $ϕ^4$ kink with a periodic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation is observed in the frame of the continuum model and with the help of a two degree of freedom collective variable model derived in PRA 89, 010102(R). When the kink interacts with the perturbation, the kink's internal mode is excited with the amplitude varying in time quasiperiodically. The maximal value of the amplitude was found to grow when the kink velocity is such that it travels one period of perturbation is nearly one period of the kink's internal mode. It is also found that the kink's translational and vibrational modes are coupled in a way that an increase in the kink's internal mode amplitude results in a decrease in kink velocity. The results obtained with the collective variable method are in a good qualitative agreement with the numerical simulations for the continuum model. The results of the present study suggest that kink dynamics in open systems with balanced gain and loss can have new features in comparison with the case of conservative systems.

On the spectral stability of kinks in 2D Klein-Gordon model with parity-time-symmetric perturbation

In a series of recent works by Demirkaya et al. stability analysis for the static kink solutions to the 1D continuous and discrete Klein-Gordon equations with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation has been analysed. We consider the linear stability problem for the static kink in 2D Klein-Gordon field taking into account spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation. The perturbation is in the form of viscous friction, which does not affect the static solutions to the unperturbed Klein-Gordon equation. Small dynamic perturbation around the static kink solution is considered to formulate the linear stability problem. The effect of the small perturbation on the solutions to the corresponding eigenvalue problem is analysed. The main result is presented in the form of a theorem describing the behavior of the eigenvalues corresponding to the extended and localised eigenmodes as the functions of the perturbation parameter.

Mathematical and physical meaning of the crossings of energy levels in ${\cal PT}-$symmetric systems

Unavoided crossings of the energy levels due to a variation of a real parameter are studied. It is found that after the quantum system in question passes through one of its energy-crossing points {\it alias} Kato's exceptional points (EP), its physical interpretation may {\em dramatically} change even when the crossing energies themselves do not complexify. The anomalous physical phase-transition mechanism of the change is revealed, attributed to the EP-related mathematics and illustrated via several exactly solvable matrix toy models.

Multiply Degenerate Exceptional Points and Quantum Phase Transitions

The realization of a genuine phase transition in quantum mechanics requires that at least one of the Kato's exceptional-point parameters becomes real. A new family of finite-dimensional and time-parametrized quantum-lattice models with such a property is proposed and studied. All of them exhibit, at a real exceptional-point time $t=0$, the Jordan-block spectral degeneracy structure of some of their observables sampled by Hamiltonian $H(t)$ and site-position $Q(t)$. The passes through the critical instant $t=0$ are interpreted as schematic simulations of non-equivalent versions of the Big-Bang-like quantum catastrophes.

Kink scattering from a parity-time-symmetric defect in the $ϕ^4$ model

In this paper, we study the $ϕ^4$ kink scattering from a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric defect and the effect of the kink's internal mode (IM) is discussed. It is demonstrated that if a kink hits the defect from the gain side, a noticeable IM is excited, while for the kink coming from the opposite direction the mode excitation is much weaker. This asymmetry is a principal finding of the present work. Similar to the case of the sine-Gordon kink studied earlier, it is found that the $ϕ^4$ kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes through the defect, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial velocity, otherwise it is trapped by the loss region. It is found that for the kink with IM the critical velocity is smaller, meaning that the kink bearing IM can pass more easily through the loss region. This feature, namely the "increased transparency" of the defect as regards the motion of the kink in the presence of IM is the second key finding of the present work. A two degree of freedom collective variable model offered recently by one of the co-authors is shown to be capable of reproducing both principal findings of the present work. A simpler, analytically tractable single degree of freedom collective variable method is used to calculate analytically the kink phase shift and the kink critical velocity sufficient to pass through the defect. Comparison with the numerical results suggests that the collective variable method is able to predict these parameters with a high accuracy.

Interaction of sine-Gordon kinks and breathers with a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric defect

The scattering of kinks and low-frequency breathers of the nonlinear sine-Gordon (SG) equation on a spatially localized $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbation (defect) with a balanced gain and loss is investigated numerically. It is demonstrated that if a kink passes the defect, it always restores its initial momentum and energy and the only effect of the interaction with the defect is a phase shift of the kink. A kink approaching the defect from the gain side always passes, while in the opposite case it must have sufficiently large initial momentum to pass through the defect instead of being trapped in the loss region. The kink phase shift and critical velocity are calculated with the use of the collective variable method. Kink-kink (kink-antikink) collisions at the defect are also briefly considered, showing how their pairwise repulsive (respectively, attractive) interaction can modify the collisional outcome of a single kink within the pair with the defect. For the breather, the result of its interaction with the defect strongly depends on the breather parameters (velocity, frequency and initial phase) and on the defect parameters. The breather can gain some energy from the defect and as a result potentially even split into a kink-antikink pair or it can lose a part of its energy. Interestingly, the breather translational mode is very weakly affected by the dissipative perturbation, so that a breather penetrates more easily through the defect when it comes from the lossy side, than a kink. In all studied soliton-defect interactions the energy loss to radiation of small-amplitude extended waves is negligible.

Distant perturbations of the Laplacian in a multi-dimensional space

We consider the Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$ perturbed by a finite number of distant perturbations those are abstract localized operators. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum as the distances between perturbations tend to infinity. The main results are the convergence theorem and the asymptotics expansions for the eigenelements. Some examples of the possible distant perturbations are given; they are potential, second order differential operator, magnetic Schrodinger operator, integral operator, and $\d$-potential.

Discrete spectrum of a pair of nonsymmetric waveguides coupled by a window

In the paper we study the discrete spectrum of a pair of quantum two-dimensional waveguides having common boundary in which a window of finite length is cut out. We study the phenomenon of new eigenvalues emerging from the threshold of the essential spectrum when the length of window passes through critical values. We construct the asymptotics expansions for the emerging eigenvalues with respect to small parameter which is the difference between current length of the window and the nearest critical value. We also study the behaviour of the spectrum when the length of the window increases unboundedly and construct asymptotics expansions with respect to great parameter which is a length of the window.

On a problem with nonperiodic frequent alternation of boundary condition imposed on fast oscillating sets

We consider singular perturbed eigenvalue problem for Laplace operator in a cylinder with frequent and nonperiodic alternation of boundary conditions imposed on narrow strips lying in the lateral surface. The width of strips depends on a small parameter in a arbitrary way and may oscillate fast, moreover, the nature of oscillation is arbitrary, too. We obtain two-sided estimates for degree of convergences of the perturbed eigenvalues.
