Normal-mode splitting in the coupled system of hybridized nuclear magnons and microwave photons

In the weak ferromagnetic MnCO$_3$ system, a low-frequency collective spin excitation (magnon) is the hybridized oscillation of nuclear and electron spins coupled through the hyperfine interaction. By using a split-ring resonator, we performed transmission spectroscopy measurements of MnCO$_3$ system and observed, for the first time, avoiding crossing between the hybridized nuclear-electron magnon mode and the resonator mode in the NMR-frequency range. The splitting strength is quite large due to the large spin density of $^{55}$Mn, and the cooperativity value $C=0.2$ (magnon-photon coupling parameter) is close to the conditions of strong coupling. The results reveal a new class of spin systems, in which the coupling between nuclear spins and photons is mediated by electron spins via the hyperfine interaction, and in which the similar normal-mode splitting of the hybridized nuclear magnon mode and the resonator mode can be observed.

First Study of Intersubband Absorption in Electrons on Helium under Quantizing Magnetic Fields

We present the first measurements of inter-subband absorption of microwaves in surface electrons on liquid helium subjected to perpendicular magnetic field B. In quantizing B, the power absorption shows intermittent regions of enhanced and suppressed absorption. This behavior is caused by strong variation of the excited-electron decay rate with B. Particularly, fast decay due to elastic scattering provides condition for strong absorption and overheating of the electron system, while slow decay due to inelastic scattering limits absorption and causes its saturation. An unexpected feature is the strong suppression of absorption at magnetic fields where the inter-subband energy splitting is a multiple number of the cyclotron energy.

Resonant Photovoltaic Effect in Surface-State Electrons on Liquid Helium

We observed an ultra-strong photovoltaic effect induced by resonant intersubband absorption of microwaves in a two-dimensional electrons system on the surface of liquid helium. The effect emerges in the regime of microwave-induced vanishing of dissipative conductance reported previously [D. Konstantinov and K. Kono: Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 (2010) 226801)] and is characterized by a nonequilibrium spatial distribution of electrons in the confining electrostatic potential. The electrostatic energy acquired by an electron exceeds other relevant energies by several orders of magnitude.

Bistability and Hysteresis of Intersubband Absorption in Strongly Interacting Electrons on Liquid Helium

We study nonlinear inter-subband microwave absorption of electrons bound to the liquid helium surface. Already for a comparatively low radiation intensity, resonant absorption due to transitions between the two lowest subbands is accompanied by electron overheating. The overheating results in a significant population of higher subbands. The Coulomb interaction between electrons causes a shift of the resonant frequency, which depends on the population of the excited states and thus on the electron temperature $T_e$. The latter is determined experimentally from the electron photoconductivity. The experimentally established relationship between the frequency shift and $T_e$ is in reasonable agreement with the theory. The dependence of the shift on the radiation intensity introduces nonlinearity into the rate of the inter-subband absorption resulting in bistability and hysteresis of the resonant response. The hysteresis of the response explains the behavior in the regime of frequency modulation, which we observe for electrons on liquid $^3$He and which was previously seen for electrons on liquid $^4$He.

Photon-induced vanishing of magnetoconductance in 2D electrons on liquid He

We report on a novel transport phenomenon realized by optical pumping in surface state electrons on helium subjected to perpendicular magnetic fields. The electron dynamics is governed by the photon-induced excitation and scattering-mediated transitions between electric subbands. In a range of magnetic fields, we observe vanishing longitudinal conductivity sigma_xx. Our result suggests the existence of radiation-induced zero-resistance states in the nondegenerate 2D electron system.

Novel Radiation-induced Magnetoresistance Oscillations in a Nondegenerate 2DES on Liquid Helium

We report the observation of novel magnetoresistance oscillations induced by the resonant inter-subband absorption in nondegenerate 2D electrons bound to the surface of liquid helium. The oscillations are periodic in 1/B and originate from the scattering-mediated transitions of the excited electrons into the Landau states of the first subband. The structure of the oscillations is affected by the collision broadening of the Landau levels and by many-electron effects.

Resonant Correlation-Induced Optical Bistability in an Electron System on Liquid Helium

We show that electrons on liquid helium display intrinsic bistability of resonant inter-subband absorption. The bistability occurs for comparatively weak microwave power. The underlying giant nonlinearity of the many-electron response results from the interplay of the strong short-range electron correlations, the long relaxation time, and the multi-subband character of the electron energy spectrum.

Microwave-Absorption-Induced Heating of Surface State Electrons on Liquid 3He

A resonance-induced change in the resistivity of the surface state electrons (SSE) exposed to the microwave (MW) radiation is observed. The MW frequency corresponds to the transition energy between two lowest Rydberg energy levels. All measurements are done with electrons over liquid 3He in a temperature range 0.45-0.65 K, in which the electron relaxation time and the MW absorption linewidth are determined by collisions with helium vapor atoms. The input MW power is varied by two orders of magnitude, and the resistivity is always found to increase. This effect is attributed to the heating of electrons with the resonance MW radiation. The temperature and the momentum relaxation rate of the hot electrons are calculated as a function of the MW power in the cell, and the Rabi frequency is determined from the comparison of the theoretical result with the experiment. In addition, the broadening of the absorption signal caused by the heating is studied experimentally, and the results are found to be in good agreement with our calculations.

Microwave Absorption of Surface-State Electrons on Liquid $^3$He

We have investigated the intersubband transitions of surface state electrons (SSE) on liquid $^3$He induced by microwave radiation at temperatures from 1.1 K down to 0.01 K. Above 0.4 K, the transition linewidth is proportional to the density of $^3$He vapor atoms. This proportionality is explained well by Ando's theory, in which the linewidth is determined by the electron - vapor atom scattering. However, the linewidth is larger than the calculation by a factor of 2.1. This discrepancy strongly suggests that the theory underestimates the electron - vapor atom scattering rate. At lower temperatures, the absorption spectrum splits into several peaks. The multiple peak structure is partly attributed to the spatial inhomogeneity of the static holding electric field perpendicular to the electron sheet.
