On the first-order genus of wreath products and their central extensions

We prove that groups of the form $\mathbb Z^m {\,\rm wr\,} \mathbb Z^n$, where $m,n \in \mathbb N$, are regularly bi-interpretable with $\mathbb Z$ and therefore are first-order rigid: every finitely generated group elementarily equivalent to $\mathbb Z^m {\,\rm wr\,} \mathbb Z^n$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb Z^m {\,\rm wr\,} \mathbb Z^n$. On the other hand, we show that $\mathbb Z^2 {\,\rm wr\,} \mathbb Z$ admits $2^{\aleph_0}$ elementarily equivalent, pairwise non-isomorphic central extensions with finite kernel.

McDuff superrigidity for group II$_1$ factors

Developing new techniques at the interface of geometric group theory and von Neumann algebras, we identify the first examples of ICC groups $G$ whose von Neumann algebras are McDuff and exhibit a new rigidity phenomenon, termed McDuff superrigidity: an arbitrary group $H$ satisfying $\mathcal{L}(H)\cong \mathcal{L}(G)$ decomposes as $H \cong G\times A$ for an ICC amenable group $A$.

W$^*$-superrigidity for property (T) groups with infinite center

We propose to study a natural version of Connes' Rigidity Conjecture that involves property (T) groups with infinite center. Utilizing techniques at the intersection of von Neumann algebras and geometric group theory, we establish several cases where this conjecture holds. In particular, we provide the first example of a W$^*$-superrigid property (T) group with infinite center.

Equationally separable classes of groups

Over each nontrivial finite group $G$, there exists a finite system of equations having no solutions in larger finite groups but having a solution in a periodic group containing $G$. We prove several similar facts about amenable, orderable, locally indicable, solvable, nilpotent, and other classes of groups. As a byproduct, we also show that any amalgam of two countable periodic groups with finite intersection embeds into a periodic group, thereby answering a 1960 question of B. Neumann in the countable case.

Finitely presented groups with transcendental spectral radius

We provide examples of groups with transcendental spectral radius: We first construct finitely presented examples, using links between decidability of the Word Problem and semi-computability of the spectral radius. This argument extends to the exponential growth rate and the asymptotic entropy. We also construct a finitely generated example with decidable Word Problem, using classical small-cancellation theory. Along the way, we prove that $C'(1/6)$ groups satisfy the Rapid Decay property, and deduce some properties on their spectral radii of independent interest.

Wreath-like products of groups and their von Neumann algebras III: Embeddings

For a class of wreath-like product groups with property (T), we describe explicitly all the embeddings between their von Neumann algebras. This allows us to provide a continuum of ICC groups with property (T) whose von Neumann algebras are pairwise non (stably) embeddable. We also give a construction of groups in this class only having inner injective homomorphisms. As an application, we obtain examples of group von Neumann algebras which admit only inner endomorphisms.

Frattini subgroups of hyperbolic-like groups

We study Frattini subgroups of various generalizations of hyperbolic groups. For any countable group $G$ admitting a general type action on a hyperbolic space $S$, we show that the induced action of the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ on $S$ has bounded orbits. This implies that $\Phi(G)$ is "small" compared to $G$; in particular, $|G:\Phi(G)|=\infty$. In contrast, for any finitely generated non-cyclic group $Q$ with $\Phi(Q)=\{ 1\}$, we construct an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group $L$ such that $L/\Phi(L)\cong Q$; in particular, the Frattini subgroup of an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group can have finite index. As an application, we obtain the first examples of invariably generated, infinite, lacunary hyperbolic groups.

Wreath-like products of groups and their von Neumann algebras I: $W^\ast$-superrigidity

We introduce a new class of groups called wreath-like products. These groups are close relatives of the classical wreath products and arise naturally in the context of group theoretic Dehn filling. Unlike ordinary wreath products, many wreath-like products have Kazhdan's property (T). In this paper, we prove that any group $G$ in a natural family of wreath-like products with property (T) is W$^*$-superrigid: the group von Neumann algebra $\text{L}(G)$ remembers the isomorphism class of $G$. This allows us to provide the first examples (in fact, $2^{\aleph_0}$ pairwise non-isomorphic examples) of W$^*$-superrigid groups with property (T).

Quasi-isometric diversity of marked groups

We use basic tools of descriptive set theory to prove that a closed set $\mathcal S$ of marked groups has $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry classes provided every non-empty open subset of $\mathcal S$ contains at least two non-quasi-isometric groups. It follows that every perfect set of marked groups having a dense subset of finitely presented groups contains $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry classes. These results account for most known constructions of continuous families of non-quasi-isometric finitely generated groups. They can also be used to prove the existence of $2^{\aleph_0}$ quasi-isometry classes of finitely generated groups having interesting algebraic, geometric, or model-theoretic properties.

Hyperbolic structures on groups

For every group $G$, we introduce the set of hyperbolic structures on $G$, denoted $\mathcal{H}(G)$, which consists of equivalence classes of (possibly infinite) generating sets of $G$ such that the corresponding Cayley graph is hyperbolic; two generating sets of $G$ are equivalent if the corresponding word metrics on $G$ are bi-Lipschitz equivalent. Alternatively, one can define hyperbolic structures in terms of cobounded $G$-actions on hyperbolic spaces. We are especially interested in the subset $\mathcal{AH}(G)\subseteq \mathcal{H}(G)$ of acylindrically hyperbolic structures on $G$, i.e., hyperbolic structures corresponding to acylindrical actions. Elements of $\mathcal{H}(G)$ can be ordered in a natural way according to the amount of information they provide about the group $G$. The main goal of this paper is to initiate the study of the posets $\mathcal{H}(G)$ and $\mathcal{AH}(G)$ for various groups $G$. We discuss basic properties of these posets such as cardinality and existence of extremal elements, obtain several results about hyperbolic structures induced from hyperbolically embedded subgroups of $G$, and study to what extent a hyperbolic structure is determined by the set of loxodromic elements and their translation lengths.

Acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups acting on trees

We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.

Fixed subgroups of automorphisms of relatively hyperbolic groups

Let G be a finitely generated relatively hyperbolic group. We show that if no peripheral subgroup of G is hyperbolic relative to a collection of proper subgroups, then the fixed subgroup of every automorphism of G is relatively quasiconvex. It follows that the fixed subgroup is itself relatively hyperbolic with respect to a natural family of peripheral subgroups. If all peripheral subgroups of G are slender (respectively, slender and coherent), our result implies that the fixed subgroup of every automorphism of G is finitely generated (respectively, finitely presented). In particular, this happens when G is a limit group, and thus for any automorphism ϕof G, Fix(ϕ) is a limit subgroup of G.

Universal tree-graded spaces and asymptotic cones

We define and give explicit construction of the universal tree-graded space with a given collection of pieces. We apply that to proving uniqueness of asymptotic cones of relatively hyperbolic groups whose peripheral subgroups have unique asymptotic cones. Modulo the Continuum Hypothesis, we show that if an asymptotic cone of a geodesic metric space is homogeneous and has cut points, then it is the universal tree-graded space with pieces - maximal connected subsets without their own cut points. Thus it is completely determined by its collection of pieces.

Exponentially generic subsets of groups

In this paper we study the generic, i.e., typical, behavior of finitely generated subgroups of hyperbolic groups and also the generic behavior of the word problem for amenable groups. We show that a random set of elements of a nonelementary word hyperbolic group is very likely to be a set of free generators for a nicely embedded free subgroup. We also exhibit some finitely presented amenable groups for which the restriction of the word problem is unsolvable on every sufficiently large subset of words.

Rips construction and Kazhdan property (T)

We show that for any non--elementary hyperbolic group $H$ and any finitely presented group $Q$, there exists a short exact sequence $1\to N\to G\to Q\to 1$, where $G$ is a hyperbolic group and $N$ is a quotient group of $H$. As an application we construct a hyperbolic group that has the same $n$--dimensional complex representations as a given finitely generated group, show that adding relations of the form $x^n=1$ to a presentation of a hyperbolic group may drastically change the group even in case $n>> 1$, and prove that some properties (e.g. properties (T) and FA) are not recursively recognizable in the class of hyperbolic groups. A relatively hyperbolic version of this theorem is also used to generalize results of Ollivier--Wise on outer automorphism groups of Kazhdan groups.
