Fresnel Interferometric Imager: ground-based prototype

The Fresnel Interferometric Imager is a space-based astronomical telescope project yielding milli-arc second angular resolution and high contrast images with loose manufacturing constraints. This optical concept involves diffractive focusing and formation flying: a first "primary optics" space module holds a large binary Fresnel Array, and a second "focal module" holds optical elements and focal instruments that allow for chromatic dispersion correction. We have designed a reduced-size Fresnel Interferometric Imager prototype and made optical tests in our lab, in order to validate the concept for future space missions. The Primary module of this prototype consists of a square, 8 cm side, 23 m focal length Fresnel array. The focal module is composed of a diaphragmed small telescope used as "field lens", a small cophased diverging Fresnel Zone Lens (FZL) that cancels the dispersion and a detector. An additional module collimates the artificial targets of various shapes, sizes and dynamic ranges to be imaged. In this paper, we describe the experimental setup, different designs of the primary Fresnel array, and the cophased Fresnel Zone Lens that achieves rigorous chromatic correction. We give quantitative measurements of the diffraction limited performances and dynamic range on double sources. The tests have been performed in the visible domain, lambda = 400 - 700 nm. In addition, we present computer simulations of the prototype optics based on Fresnel propagation, that corroborate the optical tests. This numerical tool has been used to simulate the large aperture Fresnel arrays that could be sent to space with diameters of 3 to 30 m, foreseen to operate from Lyman-alpha (121 nm) to mid I.R. (25 microns).

Fresnel interferometric arrays for space-based imaging: testbed results

This paper presents the results of a Fresnel Interferometric Array testbed. This new concept of imager involves diffraction focussing by a thin foil, in which many thousands of punched subapertures form a pattern related to a Fresnel zone plate. This kind of array is intended for use in space, as a way to realizing lightweight large apertures for high angular resolution and high dynamic range observations. The chromaticity due to diffraction focussing is corrected by a small diffractive achromatizer placed close to the focal plane of the array. The laboratory test results presented here are obtained with an 8 centimeter side orthogonal array, yielding a 23 meter focal length at 600 nm wavelength. The primary array and the focal optics have been designed and assembled in our lab. This system forms an achromatic image. Test targets of various shapes, sizes, dynamic ranges and intensities have been imaged. We present the first images, the achieved dynamic range, and the angular resolution.

Shock waves for radiative hyperbolic--elliptic systems

The present paper deals with the following hyperbolic--elliptic coupled system, modelling dynamics of a gas in presence of radiation, $u_{t}+ f(u)_{x} +Lq_{x}=0, -q_{xx} + Rq +G\cdot u_{x}=0,$ where $u\in\R^{n}$, $q\in\R$ and $R>0$, $G$, $L\in\R^{n}$. The flux function $f : \R^n\to\R^n$ is smooth and such that $\nabla f$ has $n$ distinct real eigenvalues for any $u$. The problem of existence of admissible radiative shock wave is considered, i.e. existence of a solution of the form $(u,q)(x,t):=(U,Q)(x-st)$, such that $(U,Q)(\pm\infty)=(u_\pm,0)$, and $u_\pm\in\R^n$, $s\in\R$ define a shock wave for the reduced hyperbolic system, obtained by formally putting L=0. It is proved that, if $u_-$ is such that $\nablaλ_{k}(u_-)\cdot r_{k}(u_-)\neq 0$,(where $λ_k$ denotes the $k$-th eigenvalue of $\nabla f$ and $r_k$ a corresponding right eigenvector) and $(\ell_{k}(u_{-})\cdot L) (G\cdot r_{k}(u_{-})) >0$, then there exists a neighborhood $\mathcal U$ of $u_-$ such that for any $u_+\in{\mathcal U}$, $s\in\R$ such that the triple $(u_{-},u_{+};s)$ defines a shock wave for the reduced hyperbolic system, there exists a (unique up to shift) admissible radiative shock wave for the complete hyperbolic--elliptic system. Additionally, we are able to prove that the profile $(U,Q)$ gains smoothness when the size of the shock $|u_+-u_-|$ is small enough, as previously proved for the Burgers' flux case. Finally, the general case of nonconvex fluxes is also treated, showing similar results of existence and regularity for the profiles.
