Precise Determination of Minimum Achievable Temperature for Solid-State Optical Refrigeration

We measure the minimum achievable temperature (MAT) as a function of excitation wavelength in anti-Stokes fluorescence cooling of high purity Yb3+-doped LiYF4 (Yb:YLF) crystal. Such measurements were obtained by developing a sensitive noncontact thermometry that is based on a two-band differential luminescence spectroscopy using balanced photo-detectors. These measurements are in excellent agreement with the prediction of the laser cooling model and identify MAT of 110 K at 1020 nm, corresponding to E4-E5 Stark manifold transition in Yb:YLF crystal.

Cavity-enhanced absorption for optical refrigeration

A 20-fold increase over the single path optical absorption is demonstrated with a low loss medium placed in a resonant cavity. This has been applied to laser cooling of Yb:ZBLAN glass resulting in 90% absorption of the incident pump light. A coupled-cavity scheme to achieve active optical impedance matching is analyzed.

Efficient terahertz emission from InAs nanowires

We observe intense pulses of far-infrared electromagnetic radiation emitted from arrays of InAs nanowires. The THz radiation power efficiency of these structures is about 15 times higher compared to a planar InAs substrate. This is explained by the preferential orientation of coherent plasma motion to the wire surface, which overcomes radiation trapping by total-internal reflection. We present evidence that this radiation originates from a low-energy acoustic surface plasmon mode of the nanowire. This is supported by independent measurements of electronic transport on individual nanowires, ultrafast THz spectroscopy and theoretical analysis. Our combined experiments and analysis further indicate that these plasmon modes are specific to high aspect ratio geometries.
