Heat transfer in a one-dimensional harmonic crystal in a viscous environment subjected to an external heat supply

We consider unsteady heat transfer in a one-dimensional harmonic crystal surrounded by a viscous environment and subjected to an external heat supply. The basic equations for the crystal particles are stated in the form of a system of stochastic differential equations. We perform a continualization procedure and derive an infinite set of linear partial differential equations for covariance variables. An exact analytic solution describing unsteady ballistic heat transfer in the crystal is obtained. It is shown that the stationary spatial profile of the kinetic temperature caused by a point source of heat supply of constant intensity is described by the Macdonald function of zero order. A comparison with the results obtained in the framework of the classical heat equation is presented. We expect that the results obtained in the paper can be verified by experiments with laser excitation of low-dimensional nanostructures.

Thermal echo in a finite one-dimensional harmonic crystal

An instant homogeneous thermal perturbation in the finite harmonic one-dimensional crystal is studied. Previously it was shown that for the same problem in the infinite crystal the kinetic temperature oscillates with decreasing amplitude described by the Bessel function of the first kind. In the present paper it is shown that in the finite crystal this behavior is observed only until a certain period of time when a sharp increase of the oscillations amplitude is realized. This phenomenon, further refereed to as the thermal echo, is realized periodically, with the period proportional to the crystal size. The amplitude for each subsequent echo is lower than for the previous one. It is obtained analytically that the time-dependance of the kinetic temperature can be described by an infinite sum of the Bessel functions with multiple indexes. It is also shown that the thermal echo in the thermodynamic limit is described by the Airy function.

Unsteady heat conduction processes in a harmonic crystal with a substrate potential

An analytical model of high frequency oscillations of the kinetic and potential energies in a one-dimensional harmonic crystal with a substrate potential is obtained by introducing the nonlocal energies [1]. A generalization of the kinetic temperature (nonlocal temperature) is adopted to derive a closed equation determining the heat propagation processes in the harmonic crystal with a substrate potential.
