Validating Labelled State Transition and Message Production Systems: A Theory for Modelling Faulty Distributed Systems

Modeling and formally reasoning about distributed systems with faults is a challenging task. To address this problem, we propose the theory of Validating Labeled State transition and Message production systems (VLSMs). The theory of VLSMs provides a general approach to describing and verifying properties of distributed protocols whose executions are subject to faults, supporting a correct-by-construction system development methodology. The central focus of our investigation is equivocation, a mode of faulty behavior that we formally model, reason about, and then show how to detect from durable evidence that may be available locally to system components. Equivocating components exhibit behavior that is inconsistent with single-trace system executions, while also only interacting with other components by sending and receiving valid messages. Components of system are called validators for that system if their validity constraints validate that the messages they receive are producible by the system. Our main result shows that for systems of validators, the effect that Byzantine components can have on honest validators is precisely identical to the effect that equivocating components can have on non-equivocating validators. Therefore, for distributed systems of potentially faulty validators, replacing Byzantine components with equivocating components has no material analytical consequences, and forms the basis of a sound alternative foundation to Byzantine fault tolerance analysis. All of the results and examples in the paper have been formalised and checked in the Coq proof assistant.

Asynchronous Muddy Children Puzzle (work in progress)

In this work-in-progress paper we explore using the recently introduced VLSM formalism to define and reason about the dynamics of agent-based systems. To this aim we use VLSMs to formally present several possible approaches to modeling the interactions in the Muddy Children Puzzle as protocols that reach consensus asynchronously.

A Real-Valued Modal Logic

A many-valued modal logic is introduced that combines the usual Kripke frame semantics of the modal logic K with connectives interpreted locally at worlds by lattice and group operations over the real numbers. A labelled tableau system is provided and a coNEXPTIME upper bound obtained for checking validity in the logic. Focussing on the modal-multiplicative fragment, the labelled tableau system is then used to establish completeness for a sequent calculus that admits cut-elimination and an axiom system that extends the multiplicative fragment of Abelian logic.

Mutually exclusive nuances of truth in Moisil logic

Moisil logic, having as algebraic counterpart Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras, provide an alternative way to reason about vague information based on the following principle: a many-valued event is characterized by a family of Boolean events. However, using the original definition of Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebra, the principle does not apply for subalgebras. In this paper we identify an alternative and equivalent definition for the $n$-valued Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras, in which the determination principle is also saved for arbitrary subalgebras, which are characterized by a Boolean algebra and a family of Boolean ideals. As a consequence, we prove a duality result for the $n$-valued Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras, starting from the dual space of their Boolean center. This leads us to a duality for MV$_n$-algebras, since are equivalent to a subclass of $n$-valued Łukasiewicz-Moisil algebras.

The Riesz hull of a semisimple MV-algebra

MV-algebras and Riesz MV-algebras are categorically equivalent to abelian lattice-ordered groups with strong unit and, respectively, with Riesz spaces (vector-lattices) with strong unit. A standard construction in the literature of lattice-ordered groups is the vector-lattice hull of an archimedean lattice-ordered group. Following a similar approach, in this paper we define the Riesz hull of a semisimple MV-algebra.
