Deformed Harmonic Oscillators for Metal Clusters and Balian-Bloch Theory

The predictions for the shell structure of metal clusters of the three-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator (3D q-HO), utilizing techniques of quantum groups and having the symmetry Uq(3)$\supset$SOq(3), are compared to the restrictions imposed by the periodic orbit theory of Balian and Bloch, of electrons moving in a spherical cavity. It is shown that agreement between the predictions of the two models is established through the introduction of an additional term to the Hamiltonian of the 3D q-HO, which does not influence the predictions for supershells. This term preserves the Uq(3)$\supset$SOq(3) symmetry, while in addition it can be derived through a variational procedure, analogous to the one leading from the usual harmonic oscillator to the Morse oscillator by introducing the concept of the Variable Frequency Oscillator (VFO).

Rotationally Invariant Hamiltonians for Nuclear Spectra Based on Quantum Algebras

The rotational invariance under the usual physical angular momentum of the SUq(2) Hamiltonian for the description of rotational nuclear spectra is explicitly proved and a connection of this Hamiltonian to the formalisms of Amal'sky and Harris is provided. In addition, a new Hamiltonian for rotational spectra is introduced, based on the construction of irreducible tensor operators (ITO) under SUq(2) and use of q-deformed tensor products and q-deformed Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The rotational invariance of this SUq(2) ITO Hamiltonian under the usual physical angular momentum is explicitly proved, a simple closed expression for its energy spectrum (the ``hyperbolic tangent formula'') is introduced, and its connection to the Harris formalism is established. Numerical tests in a series of Th isotopes are provided.

Sequence of Potentials Lying Between the U(5) and X(5) Symmetries

Starting from the original collective Hamiltonian of Bohr and separating the beta and gamma variables as in the X(5) model of Iachello, an exactly soluble model corresponding to a harmonic oscillator potential in the beta-variable (to be called X(5)-$β^2$) is constructed. Furthermore, it is proved that the potentials of the form $β^{2n}$ (with n being integer) provide a ``bridge'' between this new X(5)-$β^2$ model (occuring for n=1) and the X(5) model (corresponding to an infinite well potential in the beta-variable, materialized for n going to infinity. Parameter-free (up to overall scale factors) predictions for spectra and B(E2) transition rates are given for the potentials $β^2$, $β^4$, $β^6$, $β^8$, corresponding to E(4)/E(2) ratios of 2.646, 2.769, 2.824, and 2.852 respectively, compared to the E(4)/E(2) ratios of 2.000 for U(5) and 2.904 for X(5). Hints about nuclei showing this behaviour, as well as about potentials ``bridging'' the X(5) symmetry with SU(3) are briefly discussed.

Deformed Harmonic Oscillators for Metal Clusters: Analytic Properties and Supershells

The analytic properties of Nilsson's Modified Oscillator (MO), which was first introduced in nuclear structure, and of the recently introduced, based on quantum algebraic techniques, 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator (3-dim q-HO) with Uq(3) > SOq(3) symmetry, which is known to reproduce correctly in terms of only one parameter the magic numbers of alkali clusters up to 1500 (the expected limit of validity for theories based on the filling of electronic shells), are considered. Exact expressions for the total energy of closed shells are determined and compared among them. Furthermore, the systematics of the appearance of supershells in the spectra of the two oscillators is considered, showing that the 3-dim q-HO correctly predicts the first supershell closure in alkali clusters without use of any extra parameter.

Odd-Even Staggering in Octupole Bands of Actinides and Rare Earths: Systematics of "Beat" Patterns

``Beat'' patterns are shown to appear in the octupole bands of several actinides and rare earths, their appearance being independent from the formula used in order to isolate and demonstrate them. It is shown that the recent formalism, making use of discrete approximations to derivatives of the transition energies (or of the energy levels) gives results consistent with the traditional formulae. In both regions it is seen that the first vanishing of the staggering occurs at higher values of the angular momentum I in nuclei exhibiting higher staggering at low I. Since these nuclei happen to be good rotators, the observed slow decrease of the amplitude of the staggering with increasing I is in good agreement with the parameter independent predictions of the su(3) (rotational) limit of several algebraic models. In the actinides it has been found that within each series of isotopes the odd-even staggering exhibits minima at N=134 and N=146, while a local maximum is shown at N=142, these findings being in agreement with the recent suggestion of a secondary maximum of octupole deformation around N=146.

Ground-gamma band mixing and odd-even staggering in heavy deformed nuclei

It is proposed that the odd-even staggering (OES) in the $γ$- bands of heavy deformed nuclei can be reasonably characterized by a discrete approximation of the fourth derivative of the odd-even energy difference as a function of angular momentum $L$. This quantity exhibits a well developed staggering pattern (zigzagging behavior with alternating signs) in rare earth nuclei and actinides with long $γ$- bands ($L\geq 10$). It is shown that the OES can be interpreted reasonably as the result of the interaction of the $γ$ band with the ground band in the framework of a Vector Boson Model with SU(3) dynamical symmetry. The model energy expression reproduces successfully the staggering pattern in all considered nuclei up to $L=12-13$. The general behavior of the OES effect in rotational regions is studied in terms of the ground--$γ$ band-mixing interaction, showing that strong OES effect occurs in regions with strong ground--$γ$ band-mixing interaction. The approach used allows a detailed comparison of the OES in $γ$ bands with the other kinds of staggering effects in nuclei and diatomic molecules.

Ground-$γ$ band coupling in heavy deformed nuclei and SU(3) contraction limit

We derive analytic expressions for the energies and $B(E2)$-transition probabilities in the states of the ground and $γ$ bands of heavy deformed nuclei within a collective Vector-Boson Model with SU(3) dynamical symmetry. On this basis we examine the analytic behavior of the SU(3) energy splitting and the B(E2) interband transition ratios in the SU(3) contraction limits of the model. The theoretical analyses outline physically reasonable ways in which the ground-$γ$ band coupling vanishes. The experimental data on the lowest collective states of even-even rare earth nuclei and actinides strongly support the theoretical results. They suggest that a transition from the ground-$γ$ band coupling scheme to a scheme in which the ground band is situated in a separate irreducible representation of SU(3) should be realized towards the midshell regions. We propose that generally the SU(3) group contraction process should play an important role for such a kind of transitions in any collective band coupling scheme in heavy deformed nuclei.

Parafermionic and Generalized Parafermionic Algebras

The general properties of the ordinary and generalized parafermionic algebras are discussed. The generalized parafermionic algebras are proved to be polynomial algebras. The ordinary parafermionic algebras are shown to be connected to the Arik-Coon oscillator algebras.

The 3-Dimensional q-Deformed Harmonic Oscillator and Magic Numbers of Alkali Metal Clusters

Magic numbers predicted by a 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator with Uq(3) > SOq(3) symmetry are compared to experimental data for alkali metal clusters, as well as to theoretical predictions of jellium models, Woods--Saxon and wine bottle potentials, and to the classification scheme using the 3n+l pseudo quantum number. The 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator correctly predicts all experimentally observed magic numbers up to 1500 (which is the expected limit of validity for theories based on the filling of electronic shells), thus indicating that Uq(3), which is a nonlinear extension of the U(3) symmetry of the spherical (3-dimensional isotropic) harmonic oscillator, is a good candidate for being the symmetry of systems of alkali metal clusters.

Quantum Groups and Their Applications in Nuclear Physics

Quantum algebras are a mathematical tool which provides us with a class of symmetries wider than that of Lie algebras, which are contained in the former as a special case. After a self-contained introduction to the necessary mathematical tools (q-numbers, q-analysis, q-oscillators, q-algebras), the SUq(2) rotator model and its extensions, the construction of deformed exactly soluble models (u(3)>so(3) model, Interacting Boson Model, Moszkowski model), the 3-dimensional q-deformed harmonic oscillator and its relation to the nuclear shell model, the use of deformed bosons in the description of pairing correlations, and the symmetries of the anisotropic quantum harmonic oscillator with rational ratios of frequencies, which underly the structure of superdeformed and hyperdeformed nuclei, are discussed in some detail. A brief description of similar applications to the structure of molecules and of atomic clusters, as well as an outlook are also given.

Generalized deformed oscillator for vortices in superfluid films

The algebra of observables of a system of two identical vortices in a superfluid thin film is described as a generalized deformed oscillator with a structure function containing a linear (harmonic oscillator) term and a quadratic term. In contrast to the deformed oscillators occuring in other physical systems (correlated fermion pairs in a single-$j$ nuclear shell, Morse oscillator), this oscillator is not amenable to perturbative treatment and cannot be approximated by quons. From the mathematical viewpoint, this oscillator provides a novel boson realization of the algebra su(1,1).

Symmetries of anisotropic harmonic oscillators with rational ratios of frequencies and their relations to U(N) and O(N+1)

The concept of bisection of a harmonic oscillator or hydrogen atom, used in the past in establishing the connection between U(3) and O(4), is generalized into multisection (trisection, tetrasection, etc). It is then shown that all symmetries of the N-dimensional anisotropic harmonic oscillator with rational ratios of frequencies (RHO), some of which are underlying the structure of superdeformed and hyperdeformed nuclei, can be obtained from the U(N) symmetry of the corresponding isotropic oscillator with an appropriate combination of multisections. Furthermore, it is seen that bisections of the N-dimensional hydrogen atom, which possesses an O(N+1) symmetry, lead to the U(N) symmetry, so that further multisections of the hydrogen atom lead to the symmetries of the N-dim RHO. The opposite is in general not true, i.e. multisections of U(N) do not lead to O(N+1) symmetries, the only exception being the occurence of O(4) after the bisection of U(3).

Symmetries in nuclei and molecules

Recent progress in two different fronts is reported. First, the concept of bisection of a harmonic oscillator (HO) or hydrogen atom (HA), used in the past in establishing the connection between U(3) and O(4), is generalized into multisection (trisection, tetrasection, etc). It is then shown that all symmetries of the N-dim anisotropic HO with rational ratios of frequencies (RHO), some of which are underlying the structure of superdeformed and hyperdeformed nuclei, can be obtained from the U(N) symmetry of the corresponding isotropic HO with an appropriate combination of multisections. Furthermore, it is seen that bisections of the N-dim HA, which possesses an O(N+1) symmetry, lead to the U(N) symmetry, so that further multisections of the HA lead to the symmetries of the N-dim RHO. Second, it is shown that there is evidence that the recently observed in superdeformed nuclear bands $ΔI=4$ bifurcation is also occuring in rotational bands of diatomic molecules. In addition there is evidence that a $ΔI=8$ bifurcation, of the same order of magnitude as the $ΔI=4$ one, is observed in superdeformed nuclear bands and rotational bands of diatomic molecules.

Investigations of the broken SU(3) symmetry in deformed even-even nuclei

A collective vector-boson model with broken SU(3) symmetry is applied to several deformed even-even nuclei. The model description of ground and $γ$ bands together with the corresponding B(E2) transition probabilities is investigated within a broad range of SU(3) irreducible representations (irreps) $(λ,μ)$. The SU(3)-symmetry characteristics of rotational nuclei are analyzed in terms of the bandmixing interactions.

Coupled Q-oscillators as a model for vibrations of polyatomic molecules

The system of two $Q$-deformed oscillators coupled so that the total Hamiltonian has the su$_Q$(2) symmetry is proved to be equivalent, to lowest order approximation, to a system of two identical Morse oscillators coupled by the cross-anharmonicity usually used empirically in describing vibrational spectra of triatomic molecules. The symmetry also imposes a connection between the self-anharmonicity of the Morse oscillators and the cross-anharmonicity strength, which can be removed by replacing the $Q$-oscillators by deformed anharmonic oscillators. The generalization to $n$ oscillators is straightforward. The applicability of the formalism to highly symmetric polyatomic molecules is discussed.

$ΔI=4$ and $ΔI=8$ bifurcations in rotational bands of diatomic molecules

It is shown that the recently observed $ΔI=4$ bifurcation seen in superdeformed nuclear bands is also occurring in rotational bands of diatomic molecules. In addition, signs of a $ΔI=8$ bifurcation, of the same order of magnitude as the $ΔI=4$ one, are observed both in superdeformed nuclear bands and rotational bands of diatomic molecules.

Quasi-Exactly Soluble Potentials and Deformed Oscillators

It is proved that quasi-exactly soluble potentials corresponding to an oscillator with harmonic, quartic and sextic terms, for which the $n+1$ lowest levels of a given parity can be determined exactly, may be approximated by WKB equivalent potentials corresponding to deformed anharmonic oscillators of SU$_q$(1,1) symmetry, which have been used for the description of vibrational spectra of diatomic molecules. This connection allows for the immediate approximate determination of the levels of the same parity lying above the lowest $n+1$ known levels, as well as of all levels of the opposite parity. Such connections are not possible in the cases of the q-deformed oscillator, the Q-deformed oscillator, and the modified Pöschl-Teller potential with SU(1,1) symmetry.
