Observation of an emergent energy scale close to dimensional reduction in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum magnet

By appropriately perturbing a critical transverse-field Ising chain away from its critical point, the system can develop a finite correlation length with a characteristic purely massive spectrum, whose ratios and correlations are precisely described by an integrable field theory and an infinite set of integrals of motion corresponding to the $E_8$ Lie algebra. In this work, we report on experimental observation of a characteristic massive spectrum close to transverse field-induced dimensional reduction in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum magnet Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br, providing evidence for an emergent $E_8$ symmetry and the corresponding excitations of bound states in the sublattice of its ferromagnetic chains. These results demonstrate the power of integrable field theory in describing emergent many-body quantum critical phenomena in condensed matter systems.

Layer-dependent Landé $g$-factors of electrons, holes, and excitons in two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper lead halide perovskites

Two-dimensional Ruddlesden-Popper lead halide perovskites provide a valuable platform for tailoring charge and spin properties through quantum confinement and reduced symmetry. While the electron and hole Landé $g$-factors in bulk lead halide perovskites exhibit a universal dependence on the band gap energy, their evolution in two-dimensional perovskites has remained largely unexplored. Here, the Zeeman splittings of electrons and holes in (PEA)$_2$MA$_{n-1}$Pb$_n$I$_{3n+1}$ perovskites with the number of inorganic layers ovarying in the range $n=1,...,8$ are measured by means of the spin-flip Raman scattering and time-resolved Kerr rotation magneto-optical techniques. A systematic evolution of the electron and hole $g$-factors with decreasing layer thickness, which deviates from the universal bulk behavior and reveals confinement-driven trends similar to those observed in perovskite nanocrystals, is found. The experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with empirical tight-binding calculations. The exciton $g$-factors are evaluated from the Zeeman splittings of the exciton resonances in reflectivity measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to 55~T. These results provide comprehensive insight into the spin properties of two-dimensional lead halide perovskites and establish them as a tunable platform for engineering spin-dependent phenomena in quantum-confined semiconductors.

Spin-dependent Raman and Brillouin light scattering on excitons in CsPbBr$_3$ perovskite crystals

The spin properties of excitons and charge carriers in CsPbBr$_3$ lead halide perovskite crystals are investigated by spin-dependent light scattering in magnetic fields up to 10 T. Spin-flip Raman scattering spectra measured under resonant excitation of exciton-polaritons show a rich variety of features provided by the Zeeman splittings of excitons and of electrons and holes interacting with the excitons. The magnitudes and anisotropies of their Landé $g$-factors are measured. A detailed consideration of the responsible mechanisms is presented and discussed in relation to the experimental data, in particular on the polarization properties of the Raman spectra. We consider several mechanisms for the combined spin-flip Raman scattering processes involving resident carriers and photoexcited excitons and suggest new ones, involving trions in the intermediate scattering state. A double electron spin-flip caused by the exciton interaction with two localized or donor-bound electrons is revealed. The spectral lines of Brillouin light scattering on exciton-polaritons shift in energy and become polarization-sensitive in magnetic field, evidencing the splitting of the exciton-polariton dispersion.

Magnetoluminescence of ZnMnSe/BeMnTe heterostructures with type-II band alignment at millikelvin temperatures

The magneto-optical properties of a Zn$_{0.99}$Mn$_{0.01}$Se/Be$_{0.93}$Mn$_{0.07} $Te diluted magnetic semiconductor heterostructure with type-II band alignment are investigated at cryogenic temperatures down to 16 mK. The temperature of the Mn spin system, which at the lowest possible laser power reaches 270 mK, is evaluated from the giant Zeeman splitting of the direct exciton in the Zn$_{0.99}$Mn$_{0.01}$Se layers subject to an external magnetic field. The degree of circular polarization of the direct and indirect optical transitions, induced by the magnetic field, is a sensitive indicator for the laser heating of the Mn spin system. Evidence of spin glass formation in the Mn spin system of the Be$_{0.93}$Mn$_{0.07}$Te layers with the critical temperature of $T_{SG}=400$ mK is found.

Dynamic polarization of nuclear spins by optically-oriented electrons and holes in lead halide perovskite semiconductors

A theory of dynamic polarization of the nuclear spin system via optically-oriented charge carriers in lead halide perovskites is developed and compared with the experiments performed on a FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ crystal. The spin Hamiltonians of the electron and hole hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins of lead and halogen are derived. The hyperfine interaction of the halogen spins with charge carriers is shown to be anisotropic and depending on the position of the halogen nucleus in the cubic elementary cell. The quadrupole splitting is absent for the lead spins, but plays an important role for the halogen spins and affects their dynamic polarization by charge carriers. The Overhauser fields of the dynamically polarized nuclei are calculated as functions of the tilting angle of an external magnetic field and compared with the experimentally measured angular dependence of the Hanle effect. The comparison of the theoretical model with the experimental data reveals an enhanced spin polarization of the lead nuclei, whose mean spin exceeds several times the mean spins of localized electrons and holes. This unexpectedly strong spin polarization is explained by the interaction of the lead nuclei with excitons having a high degree of spin orientation due to their short lifetime after excitation by circularly-polarized light. The dynamic polarization of the quadrupole-split halogen spins manifests itself via the magnetic field they produce at the lead nuclei. This field maintains the magnetization of the lead nuclei at zero external magnetic field. The dynamics of the nuclear spin polarization is measured under optical pumping and in the dark, yielding a nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time on the order of 10 seconds.

Confined acoustic phonons in CsPbI3 nanocrystals explored by resonant Raman scattering on excitons

Optical properties of the lead halide perovskites nanocrystals are controlled by confined excitons and rich spectrum of confined acoustic and optical phonons. We study experimentally and theoretically the exciton-phonon interaction in CsPbI3 perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a glass matrix. Energies of phonon modes allowed by selection rules are detected by resonant Raman scattering for nanocrystals with sizes of 4-13 nm, covering exciton energies of 1.72-2.25 eV. While optical phonon energies remain size-independent, the energies of confined acoustic phonons increase in smaller nanocrystals. Acoustic phonons are modeled within the continuum approximation using elastic constants computed by density functional theory. The model provides the energy spectra of confined phonons for nanocrystals of various shapes (cube, sphere, spheroid), crystal symmetries (orthorhombic and tetragonal), and sizes. Exciton confinement restricts efficient coupling to only few phonon modes observable in Raman spectra. By comparing experimental data with model predictions, we conclude that the nanocrystals in our samples predominantly have spherical or spheroidal shapes.

Landé g-factors and spin dynamics of charge carriers in CuCl nanocrystals in a glass matrix

The spin properties of charge carriers confined in CuCl semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) of different sizes (radius from 1.8 nm up to 28 nm) crystallized in a glass matrix are studied experimentally and theoretically. By means of photoluminescence, spin-flip Raman scattering, time-resolved Faraday ellipticity, and time-resolved differential transmission performed at temperatures in the range of $1.6 - 120$ K at magnetic fields up to 8 T, comprehensive information on the Landé $g$-factors as well as the population and spin dynamics is received. The spin signals are contributed by confined electrons with a $g$-factor close to 2, which shows a weak increase with decreasing NC size, i.e. increasing electron confinement energy. We revisit the theory of exciton confinement as a whole in spherical NCs within the six-band valence band model in order to describe the size dependence of the $Z_3$ and $Z_{1,2}$ exciton energies in CuCl NCs. We demonstrate theoretically that the stronger increase of the $Z_{1,2}$ energy transitions with decreasing radius can be explained by the strong absorption from the excited exciton state caused by strong heavy hole-light hole mixing in the exciton. The parameters of the six-band Hamiltonian describing both the exciton and hole kinetic energies are estimated from the comparison of the calculated and experimental size dependences of the exciton transitions. A theoretical model of the size-dependent Landé $g$-factors for electron and hole confined in spherical NCs of semiconductors with negative spin-orbit splitting of the valence band is developed.

Optical spin orientation of localized electrons and holes interacting with nuclei in an FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ perovskite crystal

Optical orientation of carrier spins by circularly polarized light is the basic concept and tool of spin physics in semiconductors. We study the optical orientation of electrons and holes in a crystal of the FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ lead halide perovskite by means of polarized photoluminescence, time-resolved differential reflectivity, and time-resolved Kerr rotation. At the cryogenic temperature of 1.6 K the optical orientation degree measured for continuous-wave excitaton reaches 6% for localized electrons and 2\% for localized holes. Their contributions are distinguished from each other and from exciton optical orientation through the pronounced Hanle effect in transverse magnetic fields and the polarization recovery effect in longitudinal magnetic fields. The optical orientation degree is highly stable against detuning of the laser photon energy from the band gap by up to 0.25 eV, showing then a gradual decrease for detunings up to 0.9 eV. This evidences the inefficiency of spin relaxation mechanisms for free carriers during their energy relaxation. Spin relaxation for localized electrons and holes is provided by the hyperfine interaction with the nuclear spins. Dynamic polarization of nuclear spins is demonstrated by the Overhauser field reaching 4 mT acting on the electrons and $-76$ mT acting on the holes. This confirms the specifics of lead halide perovskite semiconductors, where the hole hyperfine interaction with the nuclei considerably exceeds that of the electron.

Ultrafast dynamics of optically excited charge carriers in the room-temperature antiferromagnetic semiconductor $α$-MnTe

We report on time-resolved optical and terahertz ultrafast spectroscopy of charge-carrier dynamics in the room-temperature antiferromagnetic semiconductor $α$-MnTe. By optically pumping the system with 1.55 eV photons at room temperature, we excite charge carriers in the conduction band through the indirect band gap and investigate the dynamical response of nonequilibrium states using optical as well as terahertz transmission probes. Three relaxation processes are revealed by their characteristic relaxation times of the order of 1, 10, and 100~ps, whose exact values are functions of the pump fluence. For high pump fluences nonlinear dependence on the pump fluence is observed both in the optical and terahertz probes.

Giant optical orientation of exciton spins in lead halide perovskite crystals

Optical orientation of carrier spins by circularly polarized light is the basis of spin physics in semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate strong optical orientation of 85\%, approaching the ultimate limit of unity, for excitons in FA$_{0.9}$Cs$_{0.1}$PbI$_{2.8}$Br$_{0.2}$ lead halide perovskite bulk crystals. Time-resolved photoluminescence allows us to distinguish excitons with 60~ps lifetime from electron-hole recombination in the spin dynamics detected via coherent spin quantum beats in magnetic field. We reveal electron-hole spin correlations through linear polarization beats after circularly polarized excitation. Detuning of the excitation energy from the exciton resonance up to 0.5~eV does not reduce the optical orientation, evidencing clean chiral selection rules in agreement with atomistic calculations, and suppressed spin relaxation of electrons and holes even with large kinetic energies.

Coherent Spin Dynamics of Electrons in Two-Dimensional (PEA)$_2$PbI$_4$ Perovskites

The versatile potential of lead halide perovskites and two-dimensional materials is merged in the Ruddlesen-Popper perovskites having outstanding optical properties. Here, the coherent spin dynamics in Ruddlesen-Popper (PEA)$_2$PbI$_4$ perovskites are investigated by picosecond pump-probe Kerr rotation in an external magnetic field. The Larmor spin precession of resident electrons with a spin dephasing time of 190~ps is identified. The longitudinal spin relaxation time in weak magnetic fields measured by the spin inertia method is as long as 25~$μ$s. A significant anisotropy of the electron $g$-factor with the in-plane value of $+2.45$ and out-of-plane value of $+2.05$ is found. The exciton out-of-plane $g$-factor is measured to be of $+1.6$ by magneto-reflectivity. This work contributes to the understanding of the spin-dependent properties of two-dimensional perovskites and their spin dynamics.

Single and double electron spin-flip Raman scattering in CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets

CdSe colloidal nanoplatelets are studied by spin-flip Raman scattering in magnetic fields up to 5 T. We find pronounced Raman lines shifted from the excitation laser energy by an electron Zeeman splitting. Their polarization selection rules correspond to those expected for scattering mediated by excitons interacting with resident electrons. Surprisingly, Raman signals shifted by twice the electron Zeeman splitting are also observed. The theoretical analysis and experimental dependencies show that the mechanism responsible for the double flip involves two resident electrons interacting with a photoexcited exciton. Effects related to various orientations of the nanoplatelets in the ensemble and different orientations of the magnetic field are analyzed.
