Material- and geometry-independent multishell cloaking device

In this paper we proposed a multi-shell generic cloaking system. A transparency condition independent of the object's optical and geometrical properties is proposed in the quasi-static regime of operation. The suppression of dipolar scattering is demonstrated in both cylindrically and spherically symmetric systems. A realistic tunable-low loss shell design is proposed based on composite metal-dielectric shell. The effects due to dissipation and dispersion on the overall scattering cross-section are thoroughly evaluated. It is shown that a strong reduction of scattering by a factor of up to 10^3 can be achieved across the entire optical spectrum. Full wave numerical simulations for complex shape particle are performed validating the analytical theory. The proposed design does not require optical magnetism and is generic in the sense that it is independent of the object's material and geometrical properties.

Temperature dependent diamagnetic-paramagnetic transitions in metal/semiconductor quantum rings

We present theoretical studies of temperature dependent diamagnetic-paramagnetic transitions in thin quantum rings. Our studies show that the magnetic susceptibility of metal/semiconductor rings can exhibit multiple sign flips at intermediate and high temperatures depending on the number of conduction electrons in the ring ($N$) and whether or not spin effects are included. When the temperature is increased from absolute zero, the susceptibility begins to flip sign above a characteristic temperature that scales inversely with the number of electrons according to $N^{-1}$ or $N^{-1/2}$, depending on the presence of spin effects and the value of $N\,\mathrm{mod}\,4$. Analytical results are derived for the susceptibility in the low and high temperature limits, explicitly showing the spin effects on the ring Curie constant.

Bounds on quantum confinement effects in metal nanoparticles

Quantum size effects on the permittivity of metal nanoparticles are investigated using the quantum box model. Explicit upper and lower bounds are derived for the permittivity and relaxation rates due to quantum confinement effects. These bounds are verified numerically, and the size-dependence and frequency-dependence of the empirical Drude size parameter is extracted from the model. Results suggest that the common practice of empirically modifying the dielectric function can lead to inaccurate predictions for highly uniform distributions of finite-sized particles.

Cloaking of Matter Waves

Invariant transformation for quantum mechanical systems is proposed. A cloaking of matter wave can be realized at given energy by designing the potential and effective mass of the matter waves in the cloaking region. The general conditions required for such a cloaking are determined and confirmed by both the wave and particle (classical) approaches. We show that it may be possible to construct such a cloaking system for cold atoms using optical lattices.

A Superlens Based on Metal-Dielectric Composites

Pure noble metals are typically considered to be the materials of choice for a near-field superlens that allows subwavelength resolution by recovering both propagating and evanescent waves. However, a superlens based on bulk metal can operate only at a single frequency for a given dielectric host. In this Letter, it is shown that a composite metal-dielectric film, with an appropriate metal filling factor, can operate at practically any desired wavelength in the visible and near-infrared ranges. Theoretical analysis and simulations verify the feasibility of the proposed lens.
