General volumes in the Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory and a related Minkowski Problem II

The general dual volume $\dveV(K)$ and the general dual Orlicz curvature measure $\deV(K, \cdot)$ were recently introduced for functions $G: (0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow (0, \infty)$ and convex bodies $K$ in $\R^n$ containing the origin in their interiors. We extend $\dveV(K)$ and $\deV(K, \cdot)$ to more general functions $G: [0, \infty)\times \sphere\rightarrow [0, \infty)$ and to compact convex sets $K$ containing the origin (but not necessarily in their interiors). Some basic properties of the general dual volume and of the dual Orlicz curvature measure, such as the continuous dependence on the underlying set, are provided. These are required to study a Minkowski-type problem for the dual Orlicz curvature measure. We mainly focus on the case when $G$ and $ψ$ are both increasing, thus complementing our previous work. The Minkowski problem asks to characterize Borel measures $μ$ on $\sphere$ for which there is a convex body $K$ in $\R^n$ containing the origin such that $μ$ equals $\deV(K, \cdot)$, up to a constant. A major step in the analysis concerns discrete measures $μ$, for which we prove the existence of convex polytopes containing the origin in their interiors solving the Minkowski problem. For general (not necessarily discrete) measures $μ$, we use an approximation argument. This approach is also applied to the case where $G$ is decreasing and $ψ$ is increasing, and hence augments our previous work. When the measures $μ$ are even, solutions that are origin-symmetric convex bodies are also provided under some mild conditions on $G$ and $ψ$. Our results generalize several previous works and provide more precise information about the solutions of the Minkowski problem when $μ$ is discrete or even.

General volumes in the Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory and a related Minkowski Problem I

The general volume of a star body, a notion that includes the usual volume, the $q$th dual volumes, and many previous types of dual mixed volumes, is introduced. A corresponding new general dual Orlicz curvature measure is defined that specializes to the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures introduced recently by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. General variational formulas are established for the general volume of two types of Orlicz linear combinations. One of these is applied to the Minkowski problem for the new general dual Orlicz curvature measure, giving in particular a solution to the Minkowski problem posed by Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang for the $(p,q)$-dual curvature measures when $p>0$ and $q<0$. A dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality for general volumes is obtained, as well as dual Orlicz-Minkowski-type inequalities and uniqueness results for star bodies. Finally, a very general Minkowski-type inequality, involving two Orlicz functions, two convex bodies, and a star body, is proved, that includes as special cases several others in the literature, in particular one due to Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang for the $(p,q)$-mixed volume.

On the polar Orlicz-Minkowski problems and the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Petty bodies

In this paper, we propose and study the polar Orlicz-Minkowski problems: under what conditions on a nonzero finite measure $μ$ and a continuous function $φ:(0,\infty)\rightarrow(0,\infty)$, there exists a convex body $K\in\mathcal{K}_0$ such that $K$ is an optimizer of the following optimization problems: \begin{equation*} \inf/\sup \bigg\{\int_{S^{n-1}}φ\big( h_L \big) \,d μ: L \in \mathcal{K}_{0} \ \text{and}\ |L^\circ|=ω_{n}\bigg\}. \end{equation*} The solvability of the polar Orlicz-Minkowski problems is discussed under different conditions. In particular, under certain conditions on $φ,$ the existence of a solution is proved for a nonzero finite measure $μ$ on $S^{n-1}$ which is not concentrated on any hemisphere of $S^{n-1}.$ Another part of this paper deals with the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Petty bodies. In particular, the existence of the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Petty bodies is established and the continuity of the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Petty bodies is proved.

On the general dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem

For $K\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ a convex body with the origin $o$ in its interior, and $ϕ:\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{o\}\rightarrow(0, \infty)$ a continuous function, define the general dual ($L_ϕ)$ Orlicz quermassintegral of $K$ by $$\mathcal{V}_ϕ(K)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^n \setminus K} ϕ(x)\,dx.$$ Under certain conditions on $ϕ$, we prove a variational formula for the general dual ($L_ϕ)$ Orlicz quermassintegral, which motivates the definition of $\widetilde{C}_{ϕ,\mathcal{V}}(K, \cdot)$, the general dual ($L_ϕ)$ Orlicz curvature measure of $K$. We pose the following general dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem: {\it Given a nonzero finite Borel measure $μ$ defined on $S^{n-1}$ and a continuous function $ϕ: \mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{o\}\rightarrow (0, \infty)$, can one find a constant $τ>0$ and a convex body $K$ (ideally, containing $o$ in its interior), such that,} $$μ=τ\widetilde{C}_{ϕ,\mathcal{V}}(K,\cdot)? $$ Based on the method of Lagrange multipliers and the established variational formula for the general dual ($L_ϕ)$ Orlicz quermassintegral, a solution to the general dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem is provided. In some special cases, the uniqueness of solutions is proved and the solution for $μ$ being a discrete measure is characterized.

The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Hadamard variational formula and Orlicz-Minkowski problems

In this paper, combining the $p$-capacity for $p\in (1, n)$ with the Orlicz addition of convex domains, we develop the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory. In particular, the Orlicz $L_ϕ$ mixed $p$-capacity of two convex domains is introduced and its geometric interpretation is obtained by the $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Hadamard variational formula. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski and Orlicz-Minkowski inequalities are established, and the equivalence of these two inequalities are discussed as well. The $p$-capacitary Orlicz-Minkowski problem is proposed and solved under some mild conditions on the involving functions and measures. In particular, we provide the solutions for the normalized $p$-capacitary $L_q$ Minkowski problems with $q>1$ for both discrete and general measures.

Sharp geometric inequalities for the general $p$-affine capacity

In this article, we propose the notion of the general $p$-affine capacity and prove some basic properties for the general $p$-affine capacity, such as affine invariance and monotonicity. The newly proposed general $p$-affine capacity is compared with several classical geometric quantities, e.g., the volume, the $p$-variational capacity and the $p$-integral affine surface area. Consequently, several sharp geometric inequalities for the general $p$-affine capacity are obtained. These inequalities extend and strengthen many well-known (affine) isoperimetric and (affine) isocapacitary inequalities.

The dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem

In this paper, the dual Orlicz curvature measure is proposed and its basic properties are provided. A variational formula for the dual Orlicz-quermassintegral is established in order to give a geometric interpretation of the dual Orlicz curvature measure. Based on the established variational formula, a solution to the dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem regarding the dual Orlicz curvature measure is provided.

The Orlicz-Petty bodies

This paper is dedicated to the Orlicz-Petty bodies. We first propose the homogeneous Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas, and establish their basic properties such as homogeneity, affine invariance and affine isoperimetric inequalities. We also prove that the homogeneous geominimal surface areas are continuous, under certain conditions, on the set of convex bodies in terms of the Hausdorff distance. Our proofs rely on the existence of the Orlicz-Petty bodies and the uniform boundedness of the Orlicz-Petty bodies of a convergent sequence of convex bodies. Similar results for the nonhomogeneous Orlicz geominimal surface areas are proved as well.

Mixed $f$-divergence for multiple pairs of measures

In this paper, the concept of the classical $f$-divergence for a pair of measures is extended to the mixed $f$-divergence for multiple pairs of measures. The mixed $f$-divergence provides a way to measure the difference between multiple pairs of (probability) measures. Properties for the mixed $f$-divergence are established, such as permutation invariance and symmetry in distributions. An Alexandrov-Fenchel type inequality and an isoperimetric inequality for the mixed $f$-divergence are proved.

Orlicz addition for measures and an optimization problem for the $f$-divergence

In this paper, the Orlicz addition of measures is proposed and an interpretation of the $f$-divergence is provided based on a linear Orlicz addition of two measures. Fundamental inequalities, such as, a dual functional Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality, are established. We also investigate an optimization problem for the $f$-divergence and establish functional affine isoperimetric inequalities for the dual functional Orlicz affine and geominimal surface areas of measures.

Anisotropic Sobolev Capacity with Fractional Order

In this paper, we introduce the anisotropic Sobolev capacity with fractional order and develop some basic properties for this new object. Applications to the theory of anisotropic fractional Sobolev spaces are provided. In particular, we give geometric characterizations for a nonnegative Radon measure $μ$ that naturally induces an embedding of the anisotropic fractional Sobolev class $\dotΛ_{α,K}^{1,1}$ into the $μ$-based-Lebesgue-space $L^{n/β}_μ$ with $0<β\le n$. Also, we investigate the anisotropic fractional $α$-perimeter. Such a geometric quantity can be used to approximate the anisotropic Sobolev capacity with fractional order. Estimation on the constant in the related Minkowski inequality, which is asymptotically optimal as $α\rightarrow 0^+$, will be provided.

This paper aims to develop basic theory for the dual Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for star bodies, which belong to the recent dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. Basic properties for these new affine invariants will be provided. Moreover, related Orlicz affine isoperimetric inequality, cyclic inequality, Santaló style inequality and Alexander-Fenchel type inequality are established.

The Dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski Theory

This paper introduces the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star sets. A radial Orlicz addition of two or more star sets is proposed and a corresponding dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a radial Orlicz linear combination of two star sets, a formula for the dual Orlicz mixed volume is derived and a corresponding dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality proved. The inequalities proved yield as special cases the precise duals of the conjectured log-Brunn-Minkowski and log-Minkowski inequalities of Böröczky, Lutwak, Yang, and Zhang. A new addition of star sets called radial $M$-addition is also introduced and shown to relate to the radial Orlicz addition.

Dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory: Orlicz $φ$-radial addition, Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume and related inequalities

This paper develops basic setting for the dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory for star bodies. An Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two or more star bodies is proposed and related dual Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski inequality is established. Based on a linear Orlicz $φ$-radial addition of two star bodies, we derive a formula for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume. Moreover, a dual Orlicz-Minkowski inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual mixed volume, a dual Orlicz isoperimetric inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-dual surface area and a dual Orlicz-Urysohn inequality for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$-harmonic mean radius are proved.

New Orlicz Affine Isoperimetric Inequalities

The Orlicz-Brunn-Minkowski theory receives considerable attention recently, and many results in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory have been extended to their Orlicz counterparts. The aim of this paper is to develop Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas for single convex body as well as for multiple convex bodies, which generalize the $L_p$ (mixed) affine and geominimal surface areas -- fundamental concepts in the $L_p$-Brunn-Minkowski theory. Our extensions are different from the general affine surface areas by Ludwig (in Adv. Math. 224 (2010)). Moreover, our definitions for Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas reveal that these affine invariants are essentially the infimum/supremum of $V_ϕ(K, L^\circ)$, the Orlicz $ϕ$-mixed volume of $K$ and the polar body of $L$, where $L$ runs over all star bodies and all convex bodies, respectively, with volume of $L$ equal to the volume of the unit Euclidean ball $B_2^n$. Properties for the Orlicz $L_ϕ$ affine and geominimal surface areas, such as, affine invariance and monotonicity, are proved. Related Orlicz affine isoperimetric inequalities are also established.

On the monotone properties of general affine surface areas under the Steiner symmetrization

In this paper, we prove that, if functions (concave) $ϕ$ and (convex) $ψ$ satisfy certain conditions, the $L_ϕ$ affine surface area is monotone increasing, while the $L_ψ$ affine surface area is monotone decreasing under the Steiner symmetrization. Consequently, we can prove related affine isoperimetric inequalities, under certain conditions on $ϕ$ and $ψ$, without assuming that the convex body involved has centroid (or the Santaló point) at the origin.

$L_p$ geominimal surface areas and their inequalities

In this paper, we introduce the $L_p$ geominimal surface area for all $-n\neq p<1$, which extends the classical geominimal surface area ($p=1$) by Petty and the $L_p$ geominimal surface area by Lutwak ($p>1$). Our extension of the $L_p$ geominimal surface area is motivated by recent work on the extension of the $L_p$ affine surface area -- a fundamental object in (affine) convex geometry. We prove some properties for the $L_p$ geominimal surface area and its related inequalities, such as, the affine isoperimetric inequality and a Santaló style inequality. Cyclic inequalities are established to obtain the monotonicity of the $L_p$ geominimal surface areas. Comparison between the $L_p$ geominimal surface area and the $p$-surface area is also provided.
