Field-Particle Interactions in Curved Flows for Shape-Asymmetric Active Particles

We show that curvatures in general ambient flow profiles can align shape-asymmetric active particles, revealing a previously overlooked competition with externally applied aligning fields. Focusing on the ubiquitous case of channel flows, we then investigate the fundamental consequences of this competition for the dynamics of shape-asymmetric active particles in microchannels in the presence of orienting fields. We find that this interplay gives rise to novel mechanisms for controlling particle dynamics, with potentially broad applications, and suggests exciting possibilities such as active-particle analogs of electronic systems.

Shape-asymmetry and flexibility in active cross-stream migration in nonuniform shear

We show that activity and broken fore-aft shape symmetry enable microswimmers to cross streamlines in nonuniform shear, a key yet overlooked factor in active cross-stream migration. Using a model of flagellated microswimmers in microchannel flow, we find that hydrodynamic coupling and flagellar flexibility significantly impact migration. A simplified theory identifies key factors driving the underlying rich nonlinear dynamics. Our findings apply to dynamics and control of both living and artificial microswimmers, while the hydrodynamic framework extends to diverse shear flow scenarios.

Frequency locking, Quasi periodicity and Chaos due to special relativistic effects

We study quasi periodic and frequency locked states that can occur in a sinusoidally driven linear harmonic oscillator in the special relativistic regime. We show how the shift in natural frequency of the oscillator with increasing relativistic effects leads to frequency locking or quasi periodicity and the chaotic states that arise due to the increasing non linearity. We find the same system can have multi-stable states in the presence of small damping. We also report an enhancement of chaos in the relativistic Henon-Heiles system.
