Eigenvalue Estimates for Schr\"odinger Operators on Ricci Shrinkers

Let $(M, g, f, \tau)$ be a complete Ricci shrinker satisfying $\textrm{Ric}+\nabla^2f=\frac{g}{2\tau}$ and let $R$ denote its scalar curvature. For a confined function $V$ on $M$, we obtain a lower bound for the lowest eigenvalue of the Schr\"odinger operator $-\Delta+\frac{R}{4}+V$, expressed in terms of an integral quantity involving $V$ and the shrinker entropy, and the equality case is characterized by the potential functions. We further generalize this estimate to complete Riemannian manifolds via Perelman's $\mu$-functional. We also study the drifted Schr\"odinger operator $-\Delta_f+V$ on smooth metric measure spaces. In particular, on Ricci shrinkers, we derive a lower bound for its lowest eigenvalue, with equality if and only if $V$ is affine.

Divergence Identity for the scalar curvature and Rigidity of Codazzi Tensors

We introduce a local vector field on an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold, defined as the sum of the covariant derivatives of a local orthonormal frame, and derive an explicit identity for its divergence, decomposed into a scalar curvature term and an auxiliary term involving connection coefficients. This result is applied to rigidity problems for Codazzi symmetric tensors. In particular, we give a new proof of a Tang-Yan theorem, which states that on a closed $n$-dimensional manifold with nonnegative scalar curvature, a smooth Codazzi symmetric tensor whose trace invariants up to order $n-1$ are constant must have constant eigenvalues. We also obtain further rigidity results under assumptions on elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues, with applications to the isoparametric rigidity of closed hypersurfaces in the unit sphere.

An eigenvalue estimate for self-shrinkers in a Ricci shirinker

In this paper, we study the drifted Laplacian $\Delta_f$ on a hypersurface $M$ in a Ricci shrinker $(\overline{M},g,f)$. We prove that the spectrum of $\Delta_f$ is discrete for immersed hypersurfaces with bounded weighted mean curvature in a Ricci shrinker with a mild condition on the potential function. Next, we give a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of $\Delta_f$ when the hypersurface is an embedded $f$-minimal one. This estimate contains the case of compact minimal hypersurfaces in a positive Einstein manifold, in particular Choi and Wang's estimate for minimal hypersurfaces in a round sphere. The estimate also recovers the ones of Ding-Xin and Brendle-Tsiamis on self-shrinkers.

Spectrum of the drift Laplacian on Ricci expanders

In this paper, we study the spectrum of the drift Laplacian on Ricci expanders. We show that the spectrum is discrete when the potential function is proper, and we show that the hypothesis on the properness of the potential function cannot be removed. We also extend previous results concerning the asymptotic behavior of the potential function on Ricci expanders. This allows us to conclude that the drift Laplacian has discrete spectrum on Ricci expanders whose Ricci curvature is bounded below by a suitable constant, possibly negative. Further, we compute all the eigenvalues of the drift Laplacian on rigid expanders and rigid shrinkers. Lastly, we investigate the second eigenvalue of the drift Laplacian on rigid Ricci expanders whose Einstein factor is a closed hyperbolic Riemann surface.

A lower bound for the first eigenvalue of a minimal hypersurface in the sphere

Let $\Sigma$ be a closed embedded minimal hypersurface in the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{m+1}$ and let $\Lambda=\max\limits_{\Sigma}|A|$ be the norm of its second fundamental form. In this work we prove that the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of $\Sigma$ satisfies $$\lambda_1(\Sigma)> \dfrac{m}{2}+\frac{m(m+1)}{32(12\Lambda+m+11)^2+8},$$ and $\lambda_1(\Sigma)=m$, when $\Lambda\le\sqrt{m}$. In particular, this estimate improves the one obtained recently in \cite{duncan2023improved}. The proof of our main result is based on a Rayleigh quotient estimate for a harmonic extension of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian of $\Sigma$ in the spirit of \cite{choi1983first}.

Rigidity of compact quasi-Einstein manifolds with boundary

In this article, we investigate the geometry of compact quasi-Einstein manifolds with boundary. We show that a $3$-dimensional simply connected compact quasi-Einstein manifold with boundary and constant scalar curvature is isometric, up to scaling, to either the standard hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{3}_{+}$, or the cylinder $I\times\mathbb{S}^2$ with the product metric. For dimension $n=4,$ we prove that a $4$-dimensional simply connected compact quasi-Einstein manifold with boundary and constant scalar curvature is isometric, up to scaling, to either the standard hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^{4}_{+},$ or the cylinder $I\times\mathbb{S}^3$ with the product metric, or the product space $\mathbb{S}^{2}_{+}\times\mathbb{S}^2$ with the product metric. Other related results for arbitrary dimensions are also discussed.

The Wasserstein distance for Ricci shrinkers

Let $(M^n,g,f)$ be a Ricci shrinker such that $\textrm{Ric}_f=\frac{1}{2}g$ and the measure induced by the weighted volume element $(4\pi)^{-\frac{n}{2}}e^{-f}dv_{g}$ is a probability measure. Given a point $p\in M$, we consider two probability measures defined in the tangent space $T_pM$, namely the Gaussian measure $\gamma$ and the measure $\overline{\nu}$ induced by the exponential map of $M$ to $p$. In this paper, we prove a result that provides an upper estimate for the Wasserstein distance with respect to the Euclidean metric $g_0$ between the measures $\overline{\nu}$ and $\gamma$, and which also elucidates the rigidity implications resulting from this estimate.

Stability properties of complete self-shrinking surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$

This paper studies rigidity for immersed self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow of surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3.$ We prove that an immersed self-shrinker with finite $L$-index must be proper and of finite topology. As one of consequences, there is no stable two-dimensional self-shrinker in $\mathbb{R}^3$ without assuming properness. We conclude the paper by giving an affirmative answer to a question of Mantegazza.

Hopf type theorems in Riemannian manifolds

In 1951, H. Hopf proved that the only surfaces, homeomorphic to the sphere, with constant mean curvature in the Euclidean space are the round (geometrical) spheres. In this paper we survey some contributions of Renato Tribuzy to generalize the result of Hopf as well as some recent results of the authors using these techniques for shrinking solitons of curvature flows and for surfaces in three-dimensional warped product manifolds, specially the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds.

Hopf type Theorem for Self-Shrinkers

In this paper, we prove that a two-dimensional self-shrinker, homeomorphic to the sphere, immersed in the three dimensional Euclidean space is a round sphere, provided its mean curvature and the norm of its position vector have an upper bound in terms of the norm of its traceless second fundamental form. The example constructed by Drugan justifies that the hypothesis on the second fundamental form is necessary. We can also prove the same kind of rigidity results for surfaces with parallel weighted mean curvature vector in R n with radial weight. These results are applications of a new generalization of Cauchy's Theorem in complex analysis which concludes that a complex function is identically zero or its zeroes are isolated if it satisfies some weak holomorphy.

Rigidity of four-dimensional Gradient shrinking Ricci solitons

Let $(M, g, f)$ be a $4$-dimensional complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with the equation $Ric+\nabla^2f=λg$, where $λ$ is a positive real number. We prove that if $M$ has constant scalar curvature $S=2λ$, it must be a quotient of $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{R}^2$. Together with the known results, this implies that a $4$-dimensional complete gradient shrinking Ricci soliton has constant scalar curvature if and only if it is rigid, that is, it is either Einstein, or a finite quotient of Gaussian shrinking soliton $\Bbb{R}^4$, $\Bbb{S}^{2}\times\Bbb{R}^{2}$ or $\Bbb{S}^{3}\times\Bbb{R}$.

On the Morse Index with Constraints II: Applications

This is the second paper in our sequence. Here, we apply our abstract Morse index formulation developed in the previous paper to study several optimization set-ups with constraints, including type I or/and type II considerations. A common theme is that critical points belong to the family of capillary surfaces, defined by constant mean curvature and intersecting the ambient manifold at a fixed angle. In each case, we classify how the general index is related to the index with a constraint. For capillary surfaces in a Euclidean ball, we obtain an index estimate which recovers stability results of G. Wang and C. Xia and J. Gou and C. Xia as special cases. By considering a family of examples, we show that inequality is also sharp. Furthermore, we precisely determine indices with constraints for important examples such as the critical catenoid, round cylinders in a ball, and CMC surfaces with constant curvature in a sphere.

On the Morse Index with Constraints I: An Abstract Formulation

In this sequence, we first prove an abstract Morse index theorem in a Hilbert space modeling a variational problem with constraints. Then, our abstract formulation is applied to study several optimization setups including closed CMC hypersurfaces, capillary surfaces in a ball, and critical points of type-II partitioning. In this paper, we study the index and nullity of a symmetric bounded bilinear form in a Hilbert space. The main results determine precisely how these notions change when restricting to a subspace of a finite codimension.

Hopf type theorems for self-similar solutions of curvature flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this paper we prove rigidity results for two-dimensional, closed, immersed, non-necessarily convex, self-similar solutions of a wide class of fully non-linear parabolic flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We show this self-similar solutions are the round spheres centered at the origin provided it has genus zero and satisfies a suitable upper pinching estimate for the Gaussian curvature. As applications, we obtain rigidity results for the round sphere as the only closed, immersed, genus zero, self-similar solution of several well known flows, as the flow of the powers of mean curvature, the harmonic mean curvature flow and the $α$-Gaussian curvature flow for $α\in(0,1/4)$. We remark that our result does not assume any embeddedness condition.

Four-dimensional complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons

In this article, we study four-dimensional complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. We prove that a four-dimensional complete gradient shrinking Ricci soliton satisfying a pointwise condition involving either the self-dual or anti-self-dual part of the Weyl tensor is either Einstein, or a finite quotient of either the Gaussian shrinking soliton $\Bbb{R}^4,$ or $\Bbb{S}^{3}\times\Bbb{R}$, or $\Bbb{S}^{2}\times\Bbb{R}^{2}.$ In addition, we provide some curvature estimates for four-dimensional complete gradient Ricci solitons assuming that its scalar curvature is suitable bounded by the potential function.

Volume growth estimates for Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds

In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at most exponential volume growth.

Volume growth of complete submanifolds in gradient Ricci Solitons with bounded weighted mean curvature

In this article, we study properly immersed complete noncompact submanifolds in a complete shrinking gradient Ricci soliton with weighted mean curvature vector bounded in norm. We prove that such a submanifold must have polynomial volume growth under some mild assumption on the potential function. On the other hand, if the ambient manifold is of bounded geometry, we prove that such a submanifold must have at least linear volume growth. In particular, we show that a properly immersed complete noncompact hypersurface in the Euclidean space with bounded Gaussian weighted mean curvature must have polynomial volume growth and at least linear volume growth.
