Transmission enhancement in three-dimensional rolled-up plasmonic metamaterials containing optically active quantum wells

We investigate three-dimensional rolled-up metamaterials containing optically active quantum wells and metal gratings supporting surface plasmon polarition resonances. Finite-difference time-domain simulations show that by matching the surface plasmon polarition resonance with the active wavelength regime of the quantum well a strong transmission enhancement is observed when illuminating the sample with p-polarized radiation. This transmission enhancement is further increased by taking advantage of the Fabry-Perot resonances of the structure.

Gain in Three-Dimensional Metamaterials utilizing Semiconductor Quantum Structures

We demonstrate gain in a three-dimensional metal/semiconductor metamaterial by the integration of optically active semiconductor quantum structures. The rolling-up of a metallic structure on top of strained semiconductor layers containing a quantum well allows us to achieve a three-dimensional superlattice consisting of alternating layers of lossy metallic and amplifying gain material. We show that the transmission through the superlattice can be enhanced by exciting the quantum well optically under both pulsed or continuous wave excitation. This points out that our structures can be used as a starting point for arbitrary three-dimensional metamaterials including gain.

Elementary excitations in charge-tunable InGaAs quantum dots studied by resonant Raman and resonant photoluminescence spectroscopy

We report on resonant optical spectroscopy of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots in which the number of electrons can accurately be tuned to N=0,1,2 by an external gate voltage. Polarization, wave vector and magnetic field dependent measurements enable us to clearly distinguish between resonant Raman and resonant photoluminescence processes. The Raman spectra for N=1 and 2 electrons considerably differ from each other. In particular, for N=2, the quantum-dot He, the spectra exhibit both singlet and triplet transitions reflecting the elementary many-particle interaction. Also the resonant photoluminescence spectra are significantly changing by varying the number of electrons in the QDs. For N=1 we observe strong polaronic effects which are suppressed for N=2.

Terahertz photoresponse of a quantum Hall edge-channel diode

The Teraherz (THz) photoresponse of a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall regime is investigated. We use a sample structure which is topologically equivalent to a Corbino geometry combined with a cross-gate technique. This quasi-Corbino geometry allows us to directly investigate the THz-induced transport between adjacent edge-states, thus avoiding bulk effects. We find a pronounced photo voltage at zero applied bias, which rapidly decreases when an external current bias is applied. The photo voltage and its dependence on the bias current can be described using the model of an illuminated photodiode, resulting from the reconstruction of the Landau bands at the sample edge. Using the sample as a detector in a Fourier transform spectrometer setup, we find a resonant response from which we extract a reduced effective cyclotron mass. The findings support a non-bolometric mechanism of the induced photo voltage and the proposed edge-channel diode model.

Spin-wave interference in three-dimensional rolled-up ferromagnetic microtubes

We have investigated spin-wave excitations in rolled-up Permalloy microtubes using microwave absorption spectroscopy. We find a series of quantized azimuthal modes which arise from the constructive interference of Damon-Eshbach type spin waves propagating around the circumference of the microtubes, forming a spin-wave resonator. The mode spectrum can be tailored by the tube's radius and number of rolled-up layers.

Observation of spin-wave propagation in permalloy microstripes

We report on the propagation of spin waves in permalloy microstripes. By means of scanning Kerr microscopy combined with continuous microwave excitation, we detect the time evolution of spin-wave interference patterns in an external magnetic field. Assuming transverse spin-wave quantization we can directly measure the amplitude, phase velocity and damping for the corresponding transversal wave mode numbers m. We find that the spin-wave interference pattern is dominated by m=0 and m=2 with phase velocities v_0=71 km/s and v_2=47 km/s, respectively.

From single dots to interacting arrays

We explore the structural changes in charge the density and the electron configuration of quantum dots caused by the presence of other dots in an array, and the interaction of neighboring dots. We discuss what recent measurements and calculation of the far-infrared absorption reveal about almost isolated quantum dots and investigate some aspects of the complex transition from isolated dots to dots with strongly overlapping electron density. We also address the the effects on the magnetization of such dot array.

Far-Infrared Excitations below the Kohn Mode: Internal Motion in a Quantum Dot

We have investigated the far-infrared response of quantum dots in modulation doped GaAs heterostructures. We observe novel modes at frequencies below the center-of-mass Kohn mode. Comparison with Hartree-RPA calculations show that these modes arise from the flattened potential in our field-effect confined quantum dots. They reflect pronounced relative motion of the charge density with respect to the center-of-mass.

The effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a magnetic field

We investigate the effects of compressible and incompressible states on the FIR-absorption of quantum wires and dots in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. The electron-electron interaction is treated in the Hartree approximation at a finite low temperature. The calculated dispersion of the collective excitations reproduces several experimental results.
