Two-Qubit Spin-Boson Model in the Strong Coupling Regime: Coherence, Non-Markovianity, and Quantum Thermodynamics

We investigate the dynamics of a two-qubit open quantum system, in particular the two-qubit spin-boson model in the strong coupling regime, coupled to two thermal bosonic baths under non-Markovian and non-equilibrium conditions. Two complementary approaches, the Hierarchical Equations of Motion (HEOM) and Reaction Coordinate Mapping (RCM), are employed to examine various coupling regimes between the qubits and their respective baths. The dynamical features of the model and the impact of the tunneling amplitude on quantum coherence of the system are probed using the $l_1$-norm of coherence. The model is further shown to have non-Markovian evolution. The nontrivial task of calculating entropy production in the strong-coupling regime is performed using auxiliary density operators in HEOM. Motivated by the realization of a quantum thermal device in the strong-coupling regime, the non-equilibrium steady-state behavior of the system is investigated. Furthermore, the relationship between the heat and spin currents and the tunneling amplitude is probed.

Thermodynamics of an Open Two-Level $\mathcal{PT-}$Symmetric Quantum System

For a subclass of a general $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric Hamiltonian obeying anti-commutation relation with its conjugate, a Hermitian basis is found that spans the bi-orthonormal energy eigenvectors. Using the modified projectors constructed from these eigenvectors, the generalized density matrix of the $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric evolution is calculated, and subsequently, ergotropy for a closed system is obtained. The $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric system, in an open system scenario, is studied to understand ergotropy under different regimes of non-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian. The consistency of the three laws of thermodynamics for the $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric system in an open system scenario is also analyzed.

Finite-Bath Open Quantum Systems: Exact Dynamics

In this work, we introduce a method for deriving exact master equations from the dynamical map for finite open quantum systems coupled to (in)finite reservoirs, using the principle of minimal dissipation. The exact dynamics of the central spin model, which models a finite-bath open quantum system, is developed for two interaction types: Heisenberg and stochastic pure-dephasing interactions. The Heisenberg interaction yields a novel phase-covariant quantum channel in the strong-coupling regime, offering a new platform for studying a range of quantum information protocols. The stochastic pure-dephasing interaction provides the microscopic derivation of the paradigmatic non-Markovian random telegraph noise (RTN) channel, establishing its quantum foundation and offering insight into stochastic couplings. We derive the closed-form master equations for both models. As a demonstration, we explore the thermodynamic performance of these systems as quantum batteries. A direct relationship between quantum heat current and charging power is revealed, and RTN quantum batteries are shown to have advantages in charge storage.

Collective Quantum Batteries and Charger-Battery Setup in Open Quantum Systems: Impact of Inter-Qubit Interactions, Dissipation, and Quantum Criticality

Quantum batteries have emerged as promising platforms for exploring energy storage and transfer processes governed by quantum mechanical laws. In this work, we study three models of two-qubit open quantum systems. The first model comprises two central spins immersed in spin baths, and both central spins are collectively considered as quantum batteries. The impact of inter-qubit interactions on the performance of the quantum battery is investigated. In the second model, a two-qubit model interacting with a squeezed thermal bath serves as a collective quantum battery, where the impact of inter-atomic distance and the bath temperature on the battery's performance is explored. Furthermore, a two-qubit model is used, where one qubit is modeled as a battery and the other as a charger. The charger in this model interacts with an anisotropic spin-chain bath, which is conducive to quantum criticality. It is demonstrated that this criticality has a substantial impact on the quantum battery's storage capacity.

Interferometric and Bipartite OTOC for Non-Markovian Open Quantum Spin-Chains and Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model

The information scrambling phenomena in an open quantum system modeled by Ising spin chains coupled to Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) baths are observed via an interferometric method for obtaining out-of-time-ordered correlators ($\mathcal{F}-$OTOC). We also use an anisotropic bath connecting to a system of tilted field Ising spin chain in order to confirm that such situations are suitable for the emergence of ballistic spreading of information manifested in the light cones in the $\mathcal{F}-$OTOC profiles. Bipartite OTOC is also calculated for a bipartite open system, and its behavior is compared with that of the $\mathcal{F}-$OTOC of a two-spin open system to get a picture of what these measures reveal about the nature of scrambling in different parameter regimes. Additionally, the presence of distinct phases in the LMG model motivated an independent analysis of its scrambling properties, where $\mathcal{F}-$OTOC diagnostics revealed that quantum chaos emerges exclusively in the symmetry-broken phase.

$\mathcal{PT-}$Symmetric Two-Level Open Quantum Systems: Information Theoretic Facets

The theory of a two-level $\eta$-Hermitian Hamiltonian with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is reviewed and extended to include open system dynamics. A first-principles derivation of the generalized Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation appropriate for a $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric Hamiltonian is presented. Inspired by a simple light matter interaction open system model, information theoretic quantities like a non-Markovian witness and fidelity are calculated for the $\mathcal{PT-}$symmetric Hamiltonian, and the results are compared with their corresponding two-level Hermitian counterparts. The nature of entanglement between two $\mathcal{PT-}$symmetric and Hermitian open quantum systems is calculated, and the contrast observed.

(Thermo-)dynamics of the spin-boson model in the weak coupling regime: Application as a quantum battery

We investigate the spin-boson model's dynamical and thermodynamic features in the weak coupling regime using the weak coupling spin-boson (WCSB) and phase covariant (PC) master equations. Both unital (pure dephasing) and non-unital (dissipative) quantum channels are considered. On the dynamical side, we explore key quantum features including non-Markovianity, quantum speed limit, quantum coherence, and the system's steady-state behavior. Notably, the measures of non-Markovianity exhibit different behavior under WCSB and PC dynamics. From the quantum thermodynamic perspective, we conceptualize the spin-boson system as a quantum battery and analyze its performance through metrics such as energy, ergotropy, anti-ergotropy, and battery capacity. We further examine the roles of pure dephasing and dissipative processes in shaping the battery's performance. Our findings demonstrate the spin-boson model's versatility as a platform for efficient energy storage and transfer in quantum thermodynamic devices.

Quantum Chaos in Non-Markovian Open Quantum Systems: Interferometric OTOC, Loschmidt Echo and Commutator Operator Norm

Out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs) are crucial tools for studying quantum chaos as they show distinct scrambling behavior for chaotic Hamiltonians. We calculate OTOC and analyze the quantum information scrambling in atom-field and spin-spin interaction models, which are open-system models and exhibit non-Markovian behavior. We also examine the Loschmidt echo for these models and comment on their chaotic nature. The commutator growth of two local operators, which is upper bounded by the Lieb-Robinson bound, is studied for these models, and the patterns of scrambling are investigated.

Quantum Thermal Analogs of Electric Circuits: A Universal Approach

In this work, we develop a panoramic schematic of quantum thermal analogs of electric circuits in the steady state regime. We establish the foundations of said premise by defining the analogs of Kirchhoff's laws for heat currents and temperature gradients, as well as a quantum thermal step transformer. Using this, we develop two novel quantum thermal circuits, viz., quantum thermal super Wheatstone bridge and quantum thermal adder circuit, paving the way for the corresponding integrated circuits. We further show that our approach encompasses various circuits like thermal diode, transistor, and Wheatstone bridge. This sheds new light on the present architecture of quantum device engineering.

Quantum Thermodynamics of Open Quantum Systems: Nature of Thermal Fluctuations

We investigate the thermodynamic behavior of open quantum systems through the Hamiltonian of Mean Force, focusing on two models: a two-qubit system interacting with a thermal bath and a Jaynes-Cummings Model without the rotating wave approximation. By analyzing both weak and strong coupling regimes, we uncover the impact of environmental interactions on quantum thermodynamic quantities, including specific heat capacity, internal energy, and entropy. Further, the ergotropy and entropy production are computed. We also explore the energy-temperature uncertainty relation, which sets an upper bound on the signal-to-noise ratio.

Quantum speed limit and nonclassicality in open quantum system models using the Wigner function

The quantum speed limit and the Wigner function of open system models are studied. To this end, we use the phase covariant and a two-qubit model interacting with a squeezed thermal bath via position-dependent coupling. The dependence of the coupling on the position of the qubits allows for the study of the dynamics in the collective regime, which is conducive to speeding up the evolution. An interesting interplay is observed between non-Markovian behavior, quantumness, and the quantum speed limit. The presence of quantum correlations is seen to speed up the evolution.

Bipartite OTOC in open quantum systems: information scrambling and irreversibility

The field of information scrambling has seen significant growth over the last decade, where the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has emerged as a prominent tool to probe it. In this work, we use bipartite OTOC, a particular form of OTOC, to study information scrambling in the atom-field interaction models and the model of the Ising spin chain interacting with a tilted magnetic field. This is done considering the effects of open quantum systems. A relationship between information scrambling, using bipartite OTOC, and irreversibility, using entropy production, is probed under unitary dynamics. The equivalence of bipartite OTOC with operator entanglement is explicitly shown for the Ising model.

Strong coupling non-Markovian quantum thermodynamics of a finite-bath system

The focus is on understanding the quantum thermodynamics of strongly coupled non-Markovian quantum systems. To this end, a non-trivial, non-Markovian model of a central spin surrounded by a spin bath is taken up, and its exact evolution is derived for arbitrary system-bath couplings. The fundamental quantum thermodynamic quantities, such as system and bath internal energies, work, heat, entropy production, and ergotropy, are calculated using the dynamics and original system (bath) Hamiltonian. An explicit expression for the work, a mismatch between the system and bath internal energies, is derived. The thermodynamic entropy of the system at thermal equilibrium is studied using the Hamiltonian of mean force in the strong coupling regime. The role of a canonical Hamiltonian in calculating the above thermodynamic quantities, a recently developed technique, is also investigated. Further, an interesting observation relevant to the spin bath acting as a charger is made in a scenario where the central spin is envisaged as a quantum battery.

Impact of non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion on quantum batteries

Recently, there has been an upsurge of interest in quantum thermodynamic devices, notably quantum batteries. Quantum batteries serve as energy storage devices governed by the rules of quantum thermodynamics. Here, we propose a model of a quantum battery wherein the system of interest can be envisaged as a battery, and the ambient environment acts as a charger (dissipation) mechanism, modeled along the ubiquitous quantum Brownian motion. We employ quantifiers like ergotropy and its (in)-coherent manifestations, as well as instantaneous and average powers, to characterize the performance of the quantum battery. We investigate the influence of the bath's temperature and the system's coupling with the environment via momentum and position coordinates on the discharging and recharging dynamics. Moreover, we probe the memory effects of the system's dynamics and obtain a relationship between the system's non-Markovian evolution and the battery's recharging process.

Quantum chaos in the Dicke model and its variants

Recently, the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has gained much attention as an indicator of quantum chaos. In the semi-classical limit, its exponential growth rate resembles the classical Lyapunov exponent. The quantum-classical correspondence has been supported for the one-body chaotic systems as well as realistic systems with interactions, as in the Dicke model, a model of multi-two-level atoms and cavity field interactions. To this end, we calculate the OTOC for different variations of the Dicke model in an open quantum system setting. The connection between the superradiant phase transition of the Dicke model and the OTOC is studied. Further, we establish a relation between the OTOC and the second-order coherence function. This becomes important for the experimental studies of the OTOC and quantum chaos in the models of quantum optics.

Impact of non-Markovian evolution on characterizations of quantum thermodynamics

Here we study the impact of non-Markovian evolution on prominent characteristics of quantum thermodynamics, such as ergotropy and power. These are benchmarked by the behavior of the quantum speed limit time. We make use of both geometric-based, particularly quantum Fisher and Wigner-Yanase information metric, and physical properties based-measures, particularly relative purity measure and relative entropy of coherence measure, to compute the quantum speed limit time. A simple non-Markovian model of a qubit in a bosonic bath exhibiting non-Markovian amplitude damping evolution is considered, which, from the quantum thermodynamic perspective with finite initial ergotropy, can be envisaged as a quantum battery. To this end, we explore the connections between the physical properties-based measures of quantum speed limit time and the coherent component of ergotropy. The non-Markovian evolution is shown to impact the recharging process of the quantum battery. Further, a connection between the discharging-charging cycle of the quantum battery and the geometric measures of quantum speed limit time is observed.

Quantum Discord and Logarithmic Negativity in the Generalized n-qubit Werner State

Quantum Discord (QD) is a measure of the total quantum non-local correlations of a quantum system. The formalism of quantum discord has been applied to various two-qubit mixed states and it has been reported that there is a non-zero quantum discord even when the states are unentangled. To this end, we have calculated the Quantum Discord for higher than two qubit mixed state, that is, the generalized n-qubit Werner state with a bipartite split. We found that the QD saturates to a straight line with unit slope in the thermodynamic limit. Qualitative studies of entanglement between the two subsystems using logarithmic negativity revealed that the entanglement content between them increases non-uniformly with the number of qubits leading to its saturation. We have proved the above claims both analytically and numerically.

A study of the quasi-probability distributions of the Tavis-Cummings model under different quantum channels

We study the dynamics of the spin and cavity field of the Tavis-Cummings model using quasi-probability distribution functions and second order coherence function, respectively. The effects of (non)-Markovian noise are considered. The relationship between the evolution of the cavity photon number, spin excitation, and atomic inversion under different quantum channels is observed. The equal-time second-order coherence function is used to study the sub-Poissonian behavior of light, and is compared with the two-time second-order coherence function in order to highlight the (anti)-bunching properties of the cavity radiation.
