Negative Group Velocity from Quadrupole Resonance of Plasmonic Spheres

We study the dispersions of plasmonic bands that arise from the coupling of electric quadrupole resonances in three dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) consisting of plasmonic spheres. Through analytical derivation, we show that two branches of quadrupole bands in simple cubic PCs with a small lattice constant possess negative group velocities. Distinct from double negative media in which the negative responses originates from the coupling of electric and magnetic responses (P and M), the negative dispersion induced by quadrupole resonance is an intrinsic property of quadrupole that does not require coupling to another degree of freedom. In addition, there is no simple effective medium description. In plasmonic systems composed of metallic nanoparticle clusters, the coupled quadrupole resonance may be tuned to lower optical frequencies, and the coupling strength between this quadrupole resonance and external electromagnetic (EM) waves are in the same order of the magnetic dipole M.

Dirac Spectra and Edge States in Honeycomb Plasmonic Lattices

We study theoretically the dispersion of plasmonic honeycomb lattices and find Dirac spectra for both dipole and quadrupole modes. Zigzag edge states derived from Dirac points are found in ribbons of these honeycomb plasmonic lattices. The zigzag edge states for out-of-plane dipole modes are closely analogous to the electronic ones in graphene nanoribbons. The edge states for in-plane dipole modes and quadrupole modes, however, have rather unique characters due to the vector nature of the plasmonic excitations. The conditions for the existence of plasmonic edge states are derived analytically.

Extrinsic photonic crystals

Doped semiconductors are intrinsically homogeneous media. However, by applying an external magnetic field that has a spatially periodic variation, doped semiconductors can behave extrinsically like conventional photonic crystals. We show this possibility theoretically by calculating the photonic band structures of a doped semiconductor under an external, spatially periodic magnetic field. Homogeneous media, behaving like conventional photonic crystals under some external, spatially periodic fields, define a new kind of photonic crystals: extrinsic photonic crystals. The proposed extrinsic photonic crystals could not only extend the concept of photonic crystals but also lead to the control of the dispersion and propagation of electromagnetic waves in a unique way: simply manipulating the externally applied fields.

Enhanced transmission of optically thick metallic films at infrared wavelengths

For an optically thick metallic film, the transmission for both s- and p-polarized waves is extremely low. If the metallic film is coated on both sides with a finite dielectric layer, light transmission for $p$-polarized waves can be enhanced considerably. This enhancement is not related to surface plasmon-polaritions. Instead, it is due to the interplay between Fabry-Perot interference in the coated dielectric layer and the existence of the Brewster angle at the dielectric/metallic interface. It is shown that the coated metallic films can act as excellent polarizers at infrared wavelengths.
