CSST WL preparation I: forecast the impact from non-Gaussian covariances and requirements on systematics-control

The precise estimation of the statistical errors and accurate removal of the systematical errors are the two major challenges for the stage IV cosmic shear surveys. We explore their impact for the China Space-Station Telescope (CSST) with survey area $\sim17,500°^2$ up to redshift $\sim4$. We consider statistical error contributed from Gaussian covariance, connected non-Gaussian covariance and super-sample covariance. We find the non-Gaussian covariances, which is dominated by the super-sample covariance, can largely reduce the signal-to-noise of the two-point statistics for CSST, leading to a $\sim1/3$ loss in the figure-of-merit for the matter clustering properties ($σ_8-Ω_m$ plane) and $1/6$ in the dark energy equation-of-state ($w_0-w_a$ plane). We further put requirements of systematics-mitigation on: intrinsic alignment of galaxies, baryonic feedback, shear multiplicative bias, and bias in the redshift distribution, for an unbiased cosmology. The $10^{-2}$ to $10^{-3}$ level requirements emphasize strong needs in related studies, to support future model selections and the associated priors for the nuisance parameters.

A 12.4 day periodicity in a close binary system after a supernova

Neutron stars and stellar-mass black holes are the remnants of massive star explosions. Most massive stars reside in close binary systems, and the interplay between the companion star and the newly formed compact object has been theoretically explored, but signatures for binarity or evidence for the formation of a compact object during a supernova explosion are still lacking. Here we report a stripped-envelope supernova, SN 2022jli, which shows 12.4-day periodic undulations during the declining light curve. Narrow H$α$ emission is detected in late-time spectra with concordant periodic velocity shifts, likely arising from hydrogen gas stripped from a companion and accreted onto the compact remnant. A new Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray source is temporally and positionally consistent with SN 2022jli. The observed properties of SN 2022jli, including periodic undulations in the optical light curve, coherent H$α$ emission shifting, and evidence for association with a $γ$-ray source, point to the explosion of a massive star in a binary system leaving behind a bound compact remnant. Mass accretion from the companion star onto the compact object powers the light curve of the supernova and generates the $γ$-ray emission.

HybPSF: Hybrid PSF reconstruction for the observed JWST NIRCam image

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) ushers in a new era of astronomical observation and discovery, offering unprecedented precision in a variety of measurements such as photometry, astrometry, morphology, and shear measurement. Accurate point spread function (PSF) models are crucial for many of these measurements. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid PSF construction method called HybPSF for JWST NIRCam imaging data. HybPSF combines the WebbPSF software, which simulates the PSF for JWST, with observed data to produce more accurate and reliable PSF models. We apply this method to the SMACS J0723 imaging data and construct supplementary structures from residuals obtained by subtracting the WebbPSF PSF model from the data. Our results show that HybPSF significantly reduces discrepancies between the PSF model and the data compared to WebbPSF. Specifically, the PSF shape parameter ellipticity and size comparisons indicate that HybPSF improves precision by a factor of approximately 10 for \$R^2\$ and \$50\%\$ for \$e\$. This improvement has important implications for astronomical measurements using JWST NIRCam imaging data.

Forecast of cross-correlation of CSST cosmic shear tomography with AliCPT-1 CMB lensing

We present a forecast study on the cross-correlation between cosmic shear tomography from the Chinese Survey Space Telescope (CSST) and CMB lensing from Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) in Tibet. The correlated galaxy and CMB lensing signals were generated from Gaussian realizations based on inputted auto- and cross-spectra. To account for the error budget, we considered the CMB lensing reconstruction noise based on the AliCPT-1 lensing reconstruction pipeline; shape noise of the galaxy lensing measurement; CSST photo-$z$ error; photo-$z$ bias; intrinsic alignment effect, and multiplicative bias. The AliCPT-1 CMB lensing mock data were generated according to two experimental stages, namely the ``4 modules*yr'' and ``48 modules*yr'' cases. We estimate the cross-spectra in 4 tomographic bins according to the CSST photo-$z$ distribution in the range of $z\in[0,4)$. After reconstructing the pseudo-cross-spectra from the realizations, we calculate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). By combining the 4 photo-$z$ bins, the total cross-correlation SNR$\approx15$ (AliCPT-1 ``4 modules*yr'') and SNR$\approx22$ (AliCPT-1 ``48 modules*yr''). Finally, we study the cosmological application of this cross-correlation signal. Excluding intrinsic alignment (IA) in the template fitting would lead to roughly a $0.6σ$ increment in $σ_8$ due to the negative IA contribution to the galaxy lensing data. For AliCPT-1 first and second stages, the cross-correlation of CSST cosmic shear with CMB lensing gives errors on the clustering amplitude $σ_{σ_8}=^{+0.043}_{-0.038}$ or $σ_{S_8}=\pm 0.031$ and $σ_{σ_8}=^{+0.030}_{-0.027}$ or $σ_{S_8}=\pm 0.018$, respectively.

Galaxy-galaxy lensing in the VOICE deep survey

The multi-band photometry of the VOICE imaging data, overlapping with 4.9 deg$^2$ of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) area, enables both shape measurement and photometric redshift estimation to be the two essential quantities for weak lensing analysis. The depth of $mag_{AB}$ is up to 26.1 (5$σ$ limiting) in $r$-band. We estimate the Excess Surface Density (ESD; $ΔΣ$) based on galaxy-galaxy measurements around galaxies at lower redshift (0.10<$z_l$<0.35) while we select the background sources to be at higher redshift ranging from 0.3 to 1.5. The foreground galaxies are divided into two major categories according to their colour (blue/red), each of which has been further divided into high/low stellar mass bins. Then the halo masses of the samples are estimated by modelling the signals, and the posterior of the parameters are samples via Mote Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) process. We compare our results with the existing Stellar-to-Halo Mass Relation (SHMR) and find that the blue low stellar mass bin (median $M_*=10^{8.31}M_\odot$) deviates from the SHMR relation whereas all other three samples agrees well with empirical curves. We interpret this discrepancy as the effect of a low star formation efficiency of the low-mass blue dwarf galaxy population dominated in the VOICE-CDFS area.

Identification of new M31 star cluster candidates from PAndAS images using convolutional neural networks

Context.Identification of new star cluster candidates in M31 is fundamental for the study of the M31 stellar cluster system. The machine-learning method convolutional neural network (CNN) is an efficient algorithm for searching for new M31 star cluster candidates from tens of millions of images from wide-field photometric surveys. Aims.We search for new M31 cluster candidates from the high-quality $g$- and $i$-band images of 21,245,632 sources obtained from the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) through a CNN. Methods. We collected confirmed M31 clusters and noncluster objects from the literature as our training sample. Accurate double-channel CNNs were constructed and trained using the training samples. We applied the CNN classification models to the PAndAS $g$- and $i$-band images of over 21 million sources to search new M31 cluster candidates. The CNN predictions were finally checked by five experienced human inspectors to obtain high-confidence M31 star cluster candidates. Results. After the inspection, we identified a catalogue of 117 new M31 cluster candidates. Most of the new candidates are young clusters that are located in the M31 disk. Their morphology, colours, and magnitudes are similar to those of the confirmed young disk clusters. We also identified eight globular cluster candidates that are located in the M31 halo and exhibit features similar to those of confirmed halo globular clusters. The projected distances to the M31 centre for three of them are larger than 100\,kpc.

Anisotropies of Cosmic Optical and Near-IR Background from China Space Station Telescope (CSST)

Anisotropies of the cosmic optical background (COB) and cosmic near-IR background (CNIRB) are capable of addressing some of the key questions in cosmology and astrophysics. In this work, we measure and analyze the angular power spectra of the simulated COB and CNIRB in the ultra-deep field of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST-UDF). The CSST-UDF covers about 9 square degrees, with magnitude limits ~28.3, 28.2, 27.6, 26.7 AB mag for point sources with 5-sigma detection in the r (0.620 um), i (0.760 um), z (0.915 um), and y (0.965 um) bands, respectively. According to the design parameters and scanning pattern of the CSST, we generate mock data, merge images and mask the bright sources in the four bands. We obtain four angular power spectra from l=200 to 2,000,000 (from arcsecond to degree), and fit them with a multi-component model including intrahalo light (IHL) using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We find that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the IHL is larger than 8 over the range of angular scales that are useful for astrophysical studies (l~10,000-400,000). Comparing to previous works, the constraints on the model parameters are improved by factors of 3~4 in this study, which indicates that the CSST-UDF survey can be a powerful probe on the cosmic optical and near-IR backgrounds.

Lenses In VoicE (LIVE): Searching for strong gravitational lenses in the VOICE@VST survey using Convolutional Neural Networks

We present a sample of 16 likely strong gravitational lenses identified in the VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields (VOICE survey) using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). We train two different CNNs on composite images produced by superimposing simulated gravitational arcs on real Luminous Red Galaxies observed in VOICE. Specifically, the first CNN is trained on single-band images and more easily identifies systems with large Einstein radii, while the second one, trained on composite RGB images, is more accurate in retrieving systems with smaller Einstein radii. We apply both networks to real data from the VOICE survey, taking advantage of the high limiting magnitude (26.1 in the r-band) and low PSF FWHM (0.8" in the r-band) of this deep survey. We analyse $\sim21,200$ images with $mag_r<21.5$, identifying 257 lens candidates. To retrieve a high-confidence sample and to assess the accuracy of our technique, nine of the authors perform a visual inspection. Roughly 75% of the systems are classified as likely lenses by at least one of the authors. Finally, we assemble the LIVE sample (Lenses In VoicE) composed by the 16 systems passing the chosen grading threshold. Three of these candidates show likely lensing features when observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. This work represents a further confirmation of the ability of CNNs to inspect large samples of galaxies searching for gravitational lenses. These algorithms will be crucial to exploit the full scientific potential of forthcoming surveys with the Euclid satellite and the Vera Rubin Observatory

Detection of Cosmic Magnification via Galaxy Shear -- Galaxy Number Density Correlation from HSC Survey Data

We propose a novel method to detect cosmic magnification signals by cross-correlating foreground convergence fields constructed from galaxy shear measurements with background galaxy positional distributions, namely shear-number density correlation. We apply it to the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) survey data. With 27 non-independent data points and their full covariance, $χ_0^2\approx 34.1$ and $χ_T^2\approx 24.0$ with respect to the null and the cosmological model with the parameters from HSC shear correlation analyses in Hamana et al. 2020 (arXiv:1906.06041), respectively. The Bayes factor of the two is $\log_{10}B_{T0}\approx 2.2$ assuming equal model probabilities of null and HSC cosmology, showing a clear detection of the magnification signals. Theoretically, the ratio of the shear-number density and shear-shear correlations can provide a constraint on the effective multiplicative shear bias $\bar m$ using internal data themselves. We demonstrate the idea with the signals from our HSC-SSP mock simulations and rescaling the statistical uncertainties to a survey of $15000°^2$. For two-bin analyses with background galaxies brighter than $m_{lim}=23$, the combined analyses lead to a forecasted constraint of $σ(\bar m) \sim 0.032$, $2.3$ times tighter than that of using the shear-shear correlation alone. Correspondingly, $σ(S_8)$ with $S_8=σ_8(Ω_\mathrm{m}/0.3)^{0.5}$ is tightened by $\sim 2.1$ times. Importantly, the joint constraint on $\bar m$ is nearly independent of cosmological parameters. Our studies therefore point to the importance of including the shear-number density correlation in weak lensing analyses, which can provide valuable consistency tests of observational data, and thus to solidify the derived cosmological constraints.

Towards a Bias-Free Selection Function in Shear Measurement

Sample selection is a necessary preparation for weak lensing measurement. It is well-known that selection itself may introduce bias in the measured shear signal. Using image simulation and the Fourier_Quad shear measurement pipeline, we quantify the selection bias in various commonly used selection function (signal-to-noise-ratio, magnitude, etc.). We proposed a new selection function defined in the power spectrum of the galaxy image. This new selection function has low selection bias, and it is particularly convenient for shear measurement pipelines based on Fourier transformation.

Deep Learning for Strong Lensing Search: Tests of the Convolutional Neural Networks and New Candidates from KiDS DR3

Convolutional Neutral Networks have been successfully applied in searching for strong lensing systems, leading to discoveries of new candidates from large surveys. On the other hand, systematic investigations about their robustness are still lacking. In this paper, we first construct a neutral network, and apply it to $r$-band images of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) Data Release 3 to search for strong lensing systems. We build two sets of training samples, one fully from simulations, and the other one using the LRG stamps from KiDS observations as the foreground lens images. With the former training sample, we find 48 high probability candidates after human-inspection, and among them, 27 are newly identified. Using the latter training set, about 67\% of the aforementioned 48 candidates are also found, and there are 11 more new strong lensing candidates identified. We then carry out tests on the robustness of the network performance with respect to the variation of PSF. With the testing samples constructed using PSF in the range of 0.4 to 2 times of the median PSF of the training sample, we find that our network performs rather stable, and the degradation is small. We also investigate how the volume of the training set can affect our network performance by varying it from 0.1 millions to 0.8 millions. The output results are rather stable showing that within the considered range, our network performance is not very sensitive to the volume size.

Variability and transient search in the SUDARE-VOICE field: a new method to extract the light curves

The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey, in synergy with the SUDARE survey, is a deep optical $ugri$ imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields using the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). The observations for the CDFS field comprise about 4.38 deg$^2$ down to $r\sim26$ mag. The total on-sky time spans over four years in this field, distributed over four adjacent sub-fields. In this paper, we use the multi-epoch $r$-band imaging data to measure the variability of the detected objects and search for transients. We perform careful astrometric and photometric calibrations and point spread function (PSF) modeling. A new method, referring to as differential running-average photometry, is proposed to measure the light curves of the detected objects. With the method, the difference of PSFs between different epochs can be reduced, and the background fluctuations are also suppressed. Detailed uncertainty analysis and detrending corrections on the light curves are performed. We visually inspect the light curves to select variable objects, and present some objects with interesting light curves. Further investigation of these objects in combination with multi-band data will be presented in our forthcoming paper.

Testing Shear Recovery with Field Distortion

The tilt, rotation, or offset of each CCD with respect to the focal plane, as well as the distortion of the focal plane itself, cause shape distortions to the observed objects, an effect typically known as field distortion (FD). We point out that FD provides a unique way of quantifying the accuracy of cosmic shear measurement. The idea is to stack the shear estimators from galaxies that share similar FD-induced shape distortions. Given that the latter can be calculated with parameters from astrometric calibrations, the accuracy of the shear estimator can be directly tested on real images. It provides a way to calibrate the multiplicative and additive shear recovery biases within the scientific data itself, without requiring simulations or any external data sets. We use the CFHTLenS images to demonstrate the accuracy of the Fourier_Quad shear recovery method. We highlight some details in our image processing pipeline, including background removal, source identification and deblending, astrometric calibration, star selection for PSF reconstruction, noise reduction, etc.. We show that in the shear ranges of -0.005 < g_1 < 0.005 and -0.008 < g_2 < 0.008, the multiplicative biases are at the level of < 0.04. Slight additive biases on the order of 5E-4 (6 sigma) are identified for sources provided by the official CFHTLenS catalog (not using its shear catalog), but are minor (4 sigma) for source catalog generated by our Fourier_Quad pipeline.

Deep CFHT Y-band imaging of VVDS-F22 field: I. data products and photometric redshifts

We present our deep $Y$-band imaging data of a two square degree field within the F22 region of the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey. The observations were conducted using the WIRCam instrument mounted at the Canada--France--Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The total on-sky time was 9 hours, distributed uniformly over 18 tiles. The scientific goals of the project are to select faint quasar candidates at redshift $z>2.2$, and constrain the photometric redshifts for quasars and galaxies. In this paper, we present the observation and the image reduction, as well as the photometric redshifts that we derived by combining our $Y$-band data with the CFHTLenS $u^*g'r'i'z'$ optical data and UKIDSS DXS $JHK$ near-infrared data. With $J$-band image as reference total $\sim$80,000 galaxies are detected in the final mosaic down to $Y$-band $5σ$ point source limiting depth of 22.86 mag. Compared with the $\sim$3500 spectroscopic redshifts, our photometric redshifts for galaxies with $z<1.5$ and $i'\lesssim24.0$ mag have a small systematic offset of $|Δ{z}|\lesssim0.2$, 1$σ$ scatter $0.03<σ_{Δz} < 0.06$, and less than 4.0% of catastrophic failures. We also compare to the CFHTLenS photometric redshifts, and find that ours are more reliable at $z\gtrsim0.6$ because of the inclusion of the near-infrared bands. In particular, including the $Y$-band data can improve the accuracy at $z\sim 1.0-2.0$ because the location of the 4000Å-break is better constrained. The $Y$-band images, the multi-band photometry catalog and the photometric redshifts are released at \url{http://astro.pku.edu.cn/astro/data/DYI.html}.

Testing photometric redshift measurements with filter definition of the Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS) is a major science project of the Space Application System of the China Manned Space Program. This survey is planned to perform both photometric imaging and slitless spectroscopic observations, and it will focus on different cosmological and astronomical goals. Most of these goals are tightly dependent on the accuracy of photometric redshift (photo-z) measurement, especially for the weak gravitational lensing survey as a main science driver. In this work, we assess if the current filter definition can provide accurate photo-z measurement to meet the science requirement. We use the COSMOS galaxy catalog to create a mock catalog for the CSS-OS. We compare different photo-z codes and fitting methods that using the spectral energy distribution (SED) template-fitting technique, and choose to use a modified LePhare code in photo-z fitting process. Then we investigate the CSS-OS photo-z accuracy in certain ranges of filter parameters, such as band position, width, and slope. We find that the current CSS-OS filter definition can achieve reasonably good photo-z results with sigma_z~0.02 and outlier fraction ~3%.

Weak Lensing Study in VOICE Survey I: Shear Measurement

The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey is a Guaranteed Time program carried out with the ESO/VST telescope to provide deep optical imaging over two 4 deg$^2$ patches of the sky centred on the CDFS and ES1 pointings. We present the cosmic shear measurement over the 4 deg$^2$ covering the CDFS region in the $r$-band using LensFit. Each of the four tiles of 1 deg$^2$ has more than one hundred exposures, of which more than 50 exposures passed a series of image quality selection criteria for weak lensing study. The $5σ$ limiting magnitude in $r$- band is 26.1 for point sources, which is $\sim$1 mag deeper than other weak lensing survey in the literature (e.g. the Kilo Degree Survey, KiDS, at VST). The photometric redshifts are estimated using the VOICE $u,g,r,i$ together with near-infrared VIDEO data $Y,J,H,K_s$. The mean redshift of the shear catalogue is 0.87, considering the shear weight. The effective galaxy number density is 16.35 gal/arcmin$^2$, which is nearly twice the one of KiDS. The performance of LensFit on such a deep dataset was calibrated using VOICE-like mock image simulations. Furthermore, we have analyzed the reliability of the shear catalogue by calculating the star-galaxy cross-correlations, the tomographic shear correlations of two redshift bins and the contaminations of the blended galaxies. As a further sanity check, we have constrained cosmological parameters by exploring the parameter space with Population Monte Carlo sampling. For a flat $Λ$CDM model we have obtained $Σ_8$ = $σ_8(Ω_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ = $0.68^{+0.11}_{-0.15}$.

Weak Lensing Study in VOICE Survey II: Shear Bias Calibrations

The VST Optical Imaging of the CDFS and ES1 Fields (VOICE) Survey is proposed to obtain deep optical $ugri$ imaging of the CDFS and ES1 fields using the VLT Survey Telescope (VST). At present, the observations for the CDFS field have been completed, and comprise in total about 4.9 deg$^2$ down to $r_\mathrm{AB}$$\sim$26 mag. In the companion paper by Fu et al. (2018), we present the weak lensing shear measurements for $r$-band images with seeing $\le$ 0.9 arcsec. In this paper, we perform image simulations to calibrate possible biases of the measured shear signals. Statistically, the properties of the simulated point spread function (PSF) and galaxies show good agreements with those of observations. The multiplicative bias is calibrated to reach an accuracy of $\sim$3.0%. We study the bias sensitivities to the undetected faint galaxies and to the neighboring galaxies. We find that undetected galaxies contribute to the multiplicative bias at the level of $\sim$0.3%. Further analysis shows that galaxies with lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are impacted more significantly because the undetected galaxies skew the background noise distribution. For the neighboring galaxies, we find that although most have been rejected in the shape measurement procedure, about one third of them still remain in the final shear sample. They show a larger ellipticity dispersion and contribute to $\sim$0.2% of the multiplicative bias. Such a bias can be removed by further eliminating these neighboring galaxies. But the effective number density of the galaxies can be reduced considerably. Therefore efficient methods should be developed for future weak lensing deep surveys.

Deep CFHT Y-band Imaging of VVDS-F22 Field: II. Quasar Selection and Quasar Luminosity Function

We report the result of a faint quasar survey in a one square degree field. The aim is to test the Y-K/g-z and J-K/i-Y color selection criteria for quasars at faint magnitude, to obtain a complete sample of quasars based on deep optical and near-infrared color-color selection, and to measure the faint end of quasar luminosity function (QLF) over a wide redshift range. We carried out a quasar survey based on the Y-K/g-z and J-K/i-Y quasar selection criteria, using the deep Y-band data obtained from our CFHT/WIRCam Y-band images in a two-degree field within the F22 field of the VIMOS VLT deep survey, optical co-added data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 and deep near-infrared data from the UKIDSS Deep Extragalactic Survey in the same field. We discovered 25 new quasars at 0.5 < z < 4.5 and i < 22.5 mag within one square degree field. The survey significantly increases the number of faint quasars in this field, especially at z ~ 2-3. It confirms that our color selections are highly complete in a wide redshift range (z < 4.5), especially over the quasar number density peak at z ~ 2-3, even for faint quasars. Combining all previous known quasars and new discoveries, we construct a sample with 109 quasars, and measure the binned QLF and parametric QLF. Although the sample is small, our results agree with a pure luminosity evolution at lower redshift and luminosity evolution and density evolution model at redshift z > 2.5.
