Some Observations on the 3x+1 Problem

We present some interesting observations on the 3x+1 problem. We propose a new algorithm which eliminates certain steps while we check the action of 3x+1 procedure on a number. Also, we propose a reason why many numbers follow a similar pattern during execution of 3x+1 algorithm. We advocate towards the end (a heuristic argument) that the 3x+1 conjecture is more likely to be true than false.

The Friendship Theorem and Minimax Theorems

We propose a generalization of Halls marriage theorem. The generalization given here provides a necessary sufficient condition for arranging a successful friendship among n number of k sets. We define multimatrix, multideterminant, multideterminantal monomials, and show that the existence of a nonzero multideterminantal monomial implies the desired existence of a successful friendship. Every nonzero multideterminantal monomial represents a possible way to achieve a successful friendship. A generalization of Mengers theorem and that of some minimax theorems is stated.

Two Simple Ways of Generating the Partitions of (n+1) from the Partitions of n

I propose two simple ways of generating the partitions of (n+1) from the partitions of n. A recurrence relation for P(n+1), the number of partitions of (n+1), in terms of P(n) and Q(n), where Q(n) denotes the number of partitions of n having strictly different last two parts is obtained. Also a generating function for Q(n) is given. The other method for generating the partitions of (n+1) from the partitions of n is discussed at the end.
