Multimode Phonon-Polaritons in Lead-Halide Perovskites in the Ultrastrong Coupling Regime

Phonons play a central role in fundamental solid-state phenomena, including superconductivity, Raman scattering, and symmetry-breaking phases. Harnessing phonons to control these effects and enable quantum technologies is therefore of great interest. However, most existing phonon control strategies rely on external driving fields or anharmonic interactions, limiting their applicability. Here, we realize multimode ultrastrong light--matter coupling and theoretically show the modulation of phonon emission. This regime is realized by coupling two optical phonon modes in lead halide perovskites to a nanoslot array functioning as a single-mode cavity. The small mode volume of the nanoslots enables high coupling strengths in the phonon-polariton system. We show theoretically that the nanoslot resonator mediates an effective interaction between phonon modes, leading to superthermal phonon bunching in thermal equilibrium between distinct modes. Our findings are well described by a multimode Hopfield model. This work establishes a pathway for engineering phononic properties for light-harvesting and light-emitting technologies.

Layer Pruning for Accelerating Very Deep Neural Networks

In this paper, we propose an adaptive pruning method. This method can cut off the channel and layer adaptively. The proportion of the layer and the channel to be cut is learned adaptively. The pruning method proposed in this paper can reduce half of the parameters, and the accuracy will not decrease or even be higher than baseline.

Wideband Bandpass Filters Based on Multipole Resonances of Spoof Localized Surface Plasmons

We propose wideband bandpass filters based on multipole resonances of spoof localized surface plasmons (SLSPs). The resonance characteristics and geometric tunability of SLSPs are investigated under microstrip excitations. Strong coupling with interlayer microstrip lines is proposed to join discrete multipole resonances into a continuous and flat passband. The SLSP filters exhibit wide passbands in compact sizes and well-balanced shapes, while holding satisfactory spurious rejection bands, group delays, and geometric tunability. This work exposes the SLSPs' application potential in filters as novel resonators.

Polarization-controlled anisotropic coding metamaterials at terahertz frequencies

Metamaterials based on effective media have achieved a lot of unusual physics (e.g. negative refraction and invisibility cloaking) owing to their abilities to tailor the effective medium parameters that do not exist in nature. Recently, coding metamaterials have been suggested to control electromagnetic waves by designing the coding sequences of digital elements '0' and '1', which possess opposite phase responses. Here, we propose the concept of anisotropic coding metamaterial at terahertz frequencies, in which coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status of terahertz waves. We experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin and flexible polarization-controlled anisotropic coding metasurface functioning in the terahertz regime using specially- designed coding elements. By encoding the elements with elaborately-designed digital sequences (in both 1 bit and 2 bits), the x- and y-polarized reflected waves can be deflected or diffused independently in three dimensions. The simulated far-field scattering patterns as well as near-electric-field distributions are given to illustrate the bifunctional performance of the encoded metasurface, which show good agreement to the measurement results. We further demonstrate the abilities of anisotropic coding metasurface to generate beam splitter and realize anomalous reflection and polarization conversion simultaneously, providing powerful controls of differently-polarized terahertz waves. The proposed method enables versatile beam behaviors under orthogonal polarizations using a single metasurface, and hence will promise interesting terahertz devices.
