Orbital Magnetization of Correlated States in Twisted Bilayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Recent observations of quantum anomalous Hall effects in moiré systems have revealed the emergence of interaction-driven ferromagnetism with significant orbital contributions. To capture this physics, we extend the modern theory of orbital magnetization to Hartree-Fock states and show that the standard expression remains valid with Hartree-Fock orbitals and Hamiltonians. We then benchmark our theory against the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model in a weak field, which yields excellent agreement with direct numerical calculations. Applying our theory to twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers, we find orbital magnetization of order one Bohr magneton per moiré cell with a non-monotonic twist-angle dependence. Our work establishes a general theory of orbital magnetization in interacting moiré systems and provides quantitative guidance for interpreting recent experiments.

Nonadiabatic Theory of Phonon Magnetic Moments in Insulators and Metals

We develop a nonadiabatic theory of phonon magnetic moments applicable to both insulators and metals. By relating the phonon magnetic moment to the force-velocity response of ions in a magnetic field, we derive a gauge-invariant expression using a gauge-covariant Wigner expansion. The formalism naturally separates Fermi-sea and Fermi-surface contributions and captures the full dependence on phonon frequency. In gapped systems, our theory reduces to previous adiabatic expressions in the low-frequency limit. Beyond this limit, it reveals additional contributions arising from resonant interband processes and the Fermi surface. Applying our theory to Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te, we find that the Fermi-surface contribution substantially enhances the phonon magnetic moment, reproducing the same order of magnitude as the experimental observation. Our results provide a unified framework for describing phonon magnetic moments beyond the adiabatic regime.

Quantum Geometric Quadrupole of Cooper Pairs

The size of Cooper pairs defines a fundamental length scale of superconductivity, conventionally set by band dispersion and the superconducting gap. This picture breaks down in flat bands, where quenched dispersion makes quantum geometry essential. Here we develop a general framework based on the Cooper pair quadrupole moment, whose trace gives the pair size. The framework holds for both dispersive and flat-band cases, and provides a unified description of the geometric origin of this length scale. In particular, when time-reversal symmetry is broken, Berry curvature enters through the phase structure of the pair wavefunction and gives an essential contribution absent from previous quantum-metric theories. Together, Berry curvature and quantum metric impose a geometric lower bound on the pair size. Applying this framework to rhombohedral graphene, we find that the Berry-curvature-induced contribution can dominate and yields pair sizes comparable to experimentally inferred coherence lengths. These results identify Berry curvature as a central geometric ingredient controlling the microscopic length scale of superconductivity.

Rotation Measure Substructures Induced by the Ponderomotive Force of Inertial \alfven Waves

The rotation measure (RM) and dispersion measure (DM) of fast radio bursts (FRBs) serve as critical probes of the magneto-ionic environments along the line of sight. The significant temporal evolution of RM observed in some repeating FRBs is generally attributed to the local environment of the source, since the intergalactic medium is not expected to vary on such short timescales. Recent observations of repeating FRB 20201124A and FRB 20220529 exhibit complex RM phenomenology, including large-amplitude global fluctuations and short-term substructures. Here, we attribute these short-term RM variations to the ponderomotive force exerted by inertial \alfven~waves (IAWs). We propose that IAWs, generated via magnetic reconnection or turbulent cascades in a low-$β$ plasma, induce nonlinear density perturbations in the source environment. We demonstrate that the resulting plasma density redistribution can produce RM suppression consistent with observed substructures. This model presents a physically motivated mechanism for the short-term RM variability observed in active repeaters. It demonstrates that such fluctuations can arise from wave-driven density cavitation within a broad, coupled parameter space involving wave amplitude, plasma density, and temperature, thereby characterizing the localized plasma dynamics required to produce the observed RM jitters.

Van Hove Singularity-Driven Topological Magnetism in Twisted MoTe2

Van Hove singularities (vHSs) strongly amplify electron interactions and can stabilize correlated phases in topological bands. Here we report signatures of topological magnetism in large-angle twisted bilayer MoTe2 driven by the interplay of vHSs, strong correlations, and valley topology. In a 4.8 degree device, electrostatic tuning to a vHS produces a spontaneous anomalous Hall hot spot near nu = -1. Combined transport and reflective magnetic circular dichroism measurements indicate that this regime is not governed by magnetization alone, but instead emerges from a correlated intervalley-coherent antiferromagnetic state that evolves with doping into a canted phase. With increasing magnetic field, the Hall response develops an additional finite-field component consistent with a topological Hall effect from a noncoplanar spin texture, before transitioning into a C = -1 Chern insulator. Our results establish tunable vHSs in moire topological bands as a route to chiral magnetism and engineering topological phase transitions.

Giant and Helical Exciton Dipole from Berry Curvature in Flat Chern Bands

We show that excitons forming between moiré flat Chern bands possess a substantial electric dipole moment comparable to the moiré lattice parameter times the elementary charge ($\sim10^2$ Debye). At a hole filling factor of one in twisted MoTe$_2$, the dipole moment of the lowest-energy exciton branch develops in-plane helical texture in momentum space from the intrinsic Berry curvature of electron and hole. By solving the Bethe-Salpeter equations, we demonstrate that an out-of-plane displacement field induces a Frenkel-to-Wannier exciton transition, accompanied by a reversal of the dipole texture helicity. The resulting attractive exciton dipole-dipole interactions lead to quadrupolar biexcitons that can be probed via two-photon spectroscopy. Our findings establish band topology as a tunable knob to engineer exciton dipole moments and pave the way to manipulate many-body interactions in the terahertz regime.

Non-solvable groups whose non-linear character degrees have the same number of different prime divisors

By a result of Noritzsch, a finite solvable group whose non-linear character degrees have the same set of prime divisors is meta-abelian. In this note we investigate finite non-solvable groups whose non-linear character degrees have the same number of different prime divisors, and show that up to an abelian direct factor, such groups are exactly $L_2(4), L_2(8), A_7, S_7$, the central product of a cyclic $3$-group with $3.A_7$, or the semi-direct product of $A_7$ by a cyclic $2$-group $\langle a\rangle$ such that $a$ non-trivially acts on $A_7$ by conjugation. As consequence, we show that only the primes $2,3,5,7$ may occur as prime divisors of their irreducible character degrees, and that Huppert's $ρ$-$σ$ conjecture holds for them.

Realization of fermionic Laughlin state on a quantum processor

Strongly correlated topological phases of matter are central to modern condensed matter physics and quantum information technology but often challenging to probe and control in material systems. The experimental difficulty of accessing these phases has motivated the use of engineered quantum platforms for simulation and manipulation of exotic topological states. Among these, the Laughlin state stands as a cornerstone for topological matter, embodying fractionalization, anyonic excitations, and incompressibility. Although its bosonic analogs have been realized on programmable quantum simulators, a genuine fermionic Laughlin state has yet to be demonstrated on a quantum processor. Here, we realize the ν = 1/3 fermionic Laughlin state on IonQ's Aria-1 trapped-ion quantum computer using an efficient and scalable Hamiltonian variational ansatz with 369 two-qubit gates on a 16-qubit circuit. Employing symmetry-verification error mitigation, we extract key observables that characterize the Laughlin state, including correlation hole and chiral edge modes, with strong agreement to exact diagonalization benchmarks. This work establishes a scalable quantum framework to simulate material-intrinsic topological orders and provides a starting point to explore its dynamics and excitations on digital quantum processors.

Crystallization in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime with Disorder-Aware Neural Quantum States

We present the first microscopic demonstration of a disorder-pinned hole Wigner crystal (WC), providing a natural explanation for the reentrant integer quantum Hall effect observed near $ν=2/3$, as well as its analogs in fractional Chern insulators. We further identify a novel crossover regime above filling $ν=2/3$ that connects this hole WC to an electron WC, characterized by a network-like electron density structure. To uncover these phenomena, we use neural-network variational Monte Carlo (NNVMC) with a disorder-aware self-attention neural quantum state that describes both fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids and Wigner crystals within a single unbiased variational framework. More broadly, our method establishes a unified phase diagram that exposes a fundamental asymmetry in crystallization across half-filling: near $ν=1/3$, increasing LL mixing and disorder both stabilize an electron WC, whereas near $ν=2/3$, the hole WC dominates at weak LL mixing and ultimately gives way to the electron WC at strong LL mixing.

First-principles theory of spin magnetic multipole moments in antiferromagnets

Antiferromagnets with vanishing net magnetization are naturally expected to host higher-order magnetic multipole moments. Understanding and utilizing the multipole degrees of freedom are imperative for novel conceptual designs and applications unique to antiferromagnets. However, a universal, quantitative definition of magnetic multipole moments of antiferromagnetic materials is currently lacking. In this work we provide a unified description of arbitrary-order spin magnetic multipole moments (SM$^3$) of antiferromagnets by introducing a nonlocal spin density in macroscopic Maxwell equations. The formalism makes it transparent how SM$^3$ calculated for translationally invariant bulk systems corresponds to experimental observables when translation symmetry is broken. Through the nonlocal spin density calculated from first principles, we propose a robust scheme to extract arbitrary-order SM$^3$ through symmetry-constrained fitting at long wavelengths. Using this approach, we have calculated SM$^3$ of a few representative antiferromagnets, including $α$-$\rm Fe_2O_3$, Mn$_3$Sn, and Mn$_3$NiN. Moreover, we clarify the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in SM$^3$, especially in the weak SOC limit where clean predictions can be made based on symmetry principles. Our work paves the way for systematically investigating multipolar order parameters of unconventional magnetic materials.

Moire Engineering of Cooper-Pair Density Modulation States

Cooper-pair density modulation (CPDM) states are superconducting phases in which the order parameter varies periodically in real space without breaking translational symmetry. Recently, moire superlattices in layered materials have emerged as powerful platforms for engineering charge density with tunable lattice symmetry, offering a new route to creating and controlling CPDM states. In this work, we demonstrate moire-induced CPDM states in a bilayer heterostructure formed by epitaxially stacking one quintuple layer (1 QL) of topological insulator Sb2Te3 on a six-unit-cell (6 UC) antiferromagnetic FeTe layer. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements reveal a moiré superlattice formed between the hexagonal Te lattice of Sb2Te3 and the square Te lattice of FeTe, which spatially modulates the two superconducting gaps of the 1 QL Sb2Te3/6 UC FeTe bilayer. Our Josephson STM/S measurements provide direct real-space imaging of the CPDM states with a wavelength corresponding to the periodicity of the moire superlattice. By substituting Sb2Te3 with Bi2Te3, we achieve control over both the periodicity and magnitude of the CPDM states. Our work demonstrates an epitaxial strategy for synthesizing moire superlattices from materials with different crystal symmetries and reveals a new mechanism for engineering CPDM states in designer bilayer heterostructures.

AT 2024wpp: the most luminous fast-evolving optical transient linked to the merger explosion of a black-hole binary

Fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) represent one of the most exotic astrophysical transients, exhibiting unusually strong emission across X-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths. Their physical origins remain highly debated, with proposed explanations ranging from stellar explosion to tidal disruption event (TDE). Here we report observations of the most luminous FBOT, AT 2024wpp whose post-peak luminosity rebrightens in X ray and becomes flattening in optical in a manner follows the decay rate characteristic of TDEs ($L_{\rm bol} \propto t^{-5/3}$). This invokes energy contribution of accretion by a central compact object, getting further corroborations from hardening of X-ray spectral index and detection of outflow inferred from the emission lines at similar phase. Detailed modeling of luminsoity evolution favors a coalesce explosion of a 34 M$_{\odot}$ Wolf-Rayet star with a 15 M$_{\odot}$ black hole (BH), demonstrating that some FBOTs may be associated with TDE of a stellar blackhole.

Illuminating the Mass Gap Through Deep Optical Constraint on a Neutron Star Merger Candidate S250206dm

The gravitational wave (GW) event S250206dm, as the first well-localized neutron star merger candidate potentially located in the mass gap, presented a unique opportunity to probe the electromagnetic signatures from such a system. Here we report a deep, multiband search with the new 2.5-meter Wide Field Survey Telescope (WFST), covering about 64% of the localization region up to a 5-sigma limiting magnitude of 23 mag. In total, 12 potential candidates have been identified while none of them are likely related to S250206dm. This non-detection provides the most stringent constraint to date on any associated kilonova. Crucially, an AT 2017gfo-like event at 269 Mpc can be excluded by WFST observations alone. Based on ejecta mass limits, a neutron star-black hole with a large mass ratio (Q >= 3.2) is disfavored. This optical-derived constraint on the mass ratio reaches, for the first time, a precision comparable to that inferred from the GW signal. This work presents the best observation of this type of events until now, and demonstrates the power of rapid, deep follow-up observations to constrain the properties of compact binary progenitors, offering key insights into the constituents of the mass gap.

Atomically Resolved Acoustic Dynamics Coupled with Magnetic Order in a van der Waals Antiferromagnet

Magnetoelastic coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials enables a unique interplay between the spin and lattice degrees of freedom. Characterizing the elastic responses with atomic and femtosecond resolution across the magnetic transition is essential for guiding the design of magnetically tunable actuators and strain-mediated spintronic devices. Here, ultrafast x-ray diffraction employed at a free-electron laser reveals that the atomic displacements, wave vectors, and dispersion relations of acoustic phonon modes in a vdW antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ are coupled with the magnetic order, by tracking both in-plane and out-of-plane Bragg peaks upon optical excitation across the Néel temperature (T$_N$). One transverse mode shows that a quasi-out-of-plane atomic displacement undergoes a significant directional change across T$_N$. Its quasi-in-plane wave vector is derived by the comparison between the measured sound velocity and the first-principles calculations. The other transverse mode is an interlayer shear acoustic mode whose amplitude is strongly enhanced in the antiferromagnetic phase, exhibiting eight times stronger amplitude than the longitudinal acoustic mode below T$_N$. The atomically resolved characterization of acoustic phonon dynamics that couple with magnetic ordering opens opportunities for harnessing unique magnetoelastic coupling in vdW magnets on ultrafast timescales.

Composite Fermion Theory of Fractional Chern Insulator Stability

We develop a mean-field theory of the stability of fractional Chern insulators based on the dipole picture of composite fermions (CFs). We construct CFs by binding vortices to Bloch electrons and derive a CF single-particle Hamiltonian that describes a Hofstadter problem in the enlarged CF Hilbert space, with the trace-condition term emerging naturally in the small-$q$ limit as part of the CF Hamiltonian. Going beyond the small-$q$ limit, we apply our theory to twisted MoTe$_2$ and calculate its CF band structures. The resulting CF phase diagram matches closely with that from exact diagonalization, and the projected many-body wavefunctions achieve exceptionally high overlaps with the latter. Our theory provides both a microscopic understanding and a computationally efficient tool for identifying fractional Chern insulators.

Layerwise Stratification and Band Reordering in Twisted Multilayer MoTe$_2$

We introduce a generalizable, physics informed strategy for generating training data that enables a machine learning force field accurate over a broad range of twist angles and stacking layer numbers in moire systems. Applying this to multilayer twisted MoTe2 (tMoTe2), we identify a structural and electronic stratification: the two moire interface (MI) layers retain substantial lattice reconstruction even in thick multilayers, while outer bulk like layers show rapidly attenuated distortions.Surprisingly, this stratification becomes strongest not in the ultra-small twist angle regime (<~1°), where in plane domain formation is well known, but rather at intermediate angles (2-5°). Simultaneously, interlayer hybridization across the MI-bulk boundary is strongly suppressed, leading to electronic isolation. In twisted double bilayer MoTe2, this stratification gives rise to coexisting honeycomb and triangular lattice motifs in the frontier valence bands. We further demonstrate that twist angle and weak gating can create energy shift of bands belonging to the two motifs, producing Chern band reordering and nonlinear electric polarization with modest hole doping. Our approach allows efficient simulation of multilayer moire systems and reveals structural-electronic separation phenomena absent in bilayer systems.

A possible periodic RM evolution in the repeating FRB 20220529

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious millisecond-duration radio transients of extragalactic origin. Some of them repeat, while others apparently do not. Investigations of periodic activity in repeating FRB have been conducted to probe their origins. While periodicity in the burst rate has been reported, studies of periodicities in other properties, such as dispersion measure (DM) and rotation measure (RM), are sparse. FRB~20220529 was monitored by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) for nearly three years, providing an opportunity to investigate periodicity in its observed properties. Here we report a possible period of $\sim 200$ days in the RM evolution, with a significance of {4.1 $σ$} estimated via the Lomb-Scargle algorithm and {3.1 $σ$} with the phase-folding method. Periodicity in the burst rate was also investigated. It may indicate that the FRB progenitor is in a binary system, which is consistent with the significant RM increase and prompt recovery of this FRB on a week-timescale. Other scenarios, such as a system with an intermediate-mass black hole, are also explored.

Parity Anomalous Semimetal with Minimal Conductivity Induced by an In-Plane Magnetic Field

The interplay between topological materials and local symmetry breaking gives rise to diverse topological quantum phenomena. A notable example is the parity anomalous semimetal (PAS), which hosts a single unpaired gapless Dirac cone with a half-integer quantized Hall conductivity. Here, we realize this phase in a magnetic topological sandwich structure by applying an in-plane magnetic field. This configuration aligns the magnetization of one surface in-plane while preserving magnetization out-of-plane on the opposite surface, satisfying the condition for a gapless surface state near the Fermi level on only one surface. Our key evidence is a distinctive two-stage evolution of the conductivity tensor ($σ_{xy}$, $σ_{xx}$). The first stage culminates in the PAS at the fixed point ($\frac{e^2}{2h}$, $m \frac{e^2}{h}$), where $m \approx 0.6$ corresponds to the minimal longitudinal conductivity of a single gapless Dirac cone of fermions on a 2D lattice. This PAS state remains stabilized and is superposed with a gapped band flow in the second stage. This observation demonstrates that this state stabilized by the in-plane field resists localization--contrary to conventional expectations for 2D electron systems with broken time reversal symmetry. The dynamic transition from an integer quantized insulator to a half-integer quantized semimetal establishes this material system as a versatile platform for exploring parity anomaly physics.
