Wall Modeling of Turbulent Flows with Varying Pressure Gradients Using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning

We propose a framework for developing wall models for large-eddy simulation that is able to capture pressure-gradient effects using multi-agent reinforcement learning. Within this framework, the distributed reinforcement learning agents receive off-wall environmental states including pressure gradient and turbulence strain rate, ensuring adaptability to a wide range of flows characterized by pressure-gradient effects and separations. Based on these states, the agents determine an action to adjust the wall eddy viscosity, and consequently the wall-shear stress. The model training is in situ with wall-modeled large-eddy simulation grid resolutions and does not rely on the instantaneous velocity fields from high-fidelity simulations. Throughout the training, the agents compute rewards from the relative error in the estimated wall-shear stress, which allows the agents to refine an optimal control policy that minimizes prediction errors. Employing this framework, wall models are trained for two distinct subgrid-scale models using low-Reynolds-number flow over periodic hills. These models are validated through simulations of flows over periodic hills at higher Reynolds numbers and flow over the Boeing Gaussian bump. The developed wall models successfully capture the acceleration and deceleration of wall-bounded turbulent flows under pressure gradients and outperform the equilibrium wall model in predicting skin friction.

Representation Alignment Contrastive Regularization for Multi-Object Tracking

Achieving high-performance in multi-object tracking algorithms heavily relies on modeling spatio-temporal relationships during the data association stage. Mainstream approaches encompass rule-based and deep learning-based methods for spatio-temporal relationship modeling. While the former relies on physical motion laws, offering wider applicability but yielding suboptimal results for complex object movements, the latter, though achieving high-performance, lacks interpretability and involves complex module designs. This work aims to simplify deep learning-based spatio-temporal relationship models and introduce interpretability into features for data association. Specifically, a lightweight single-layer transformer encoder is utilized to model spatio-temporal relationships. To make features more interpretative, two contrastive regularization losses based on representation alignment are proposed, derived from spatio-temporal consistency rules. By applying weighted summation to affinity matrices, the aligned features can seamlessly integrate into the data association stage of the original tracking workflow. Experimental results showcase that our model enhances the majority of existing tracking networks' performance without excessive complexity, with minimal increase in training overhead and nearly negligible computational and storage costs.

Topological Boundary Modes in Nonlinear Dynamics with Chiral Symmetry

Particle-hole symmetry and chiral symmetry play a pivotal role in multiple areas of physics, yet they remain unstudied in systems with nonlinear interactions whose nonlinear normal modes do not exhibit $\textbf{U}(1)$-gauge symmetry. In this work, we establish particle-hole symmetry and chiral symmetry in such systems. Chiral symmetry ensures the quantization of the Berry phase of nonlinear normal modes and categorizes the topological phases of nonlinear dynamics. We show topologically protected static boundary modes in chiral-symmetric nonlinear systems. Our theoretical framework extends particle-hole and chiral symmetries to nonlinear dynamics, whose nonlinear modes do not necessarily yield $\textbf{U}(1)$-gauge symmetry.

Sensitivity analysis of wall-modeled large-eddy simulation for separated turbulent flow

In this study, we conduct a parametric analysis to evaluate the sensitivities of wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (LES) with respect to subgrid-scale (SGS) models, mesh resolution, wall boundary conditions and mesh anisotropy. While such investigations have been conducted for attached/flat-plate flow configurations, systematic studies specifically targeting turbulent flows with separation are notably sparse. To bridge this gap, our study focuses on the flow over a two-dimensional Gaussian-shaped bump at a moderately high Reynolds number, which involves smooth-body separation of a turbulent boundary layer under pressure-gradient and surface-curvature effects. In the simulations, the no-slip condition at the wall is replaced by three different forms of boundary condition based on the thin boundary layer equations and the mean wall-shear stress from high-fidelity numerical simulation to avoid the additional complexity of modeling the wall-shear stress. Various statistics, including the mean separation bubble size, mean velocity profile, and dissipation from SGS model, are compared and analyzed. The results reveal that capturing the separation bubble strongly depends on the choice of SGS model. While simulations approach grid convergence with resolutions nearing those of wall-resolved LES meshes, above this limit, the LES predictions exhibit intricate sensitivities to mesh resolution. Furthermore, both wall boundary conditions and the anisotropy of mesh cells exert discernible impacts on the turbulent flow predictions, yet the magnitudes of these impacts vary based on the specific SGS model chosen for the simulation.

Large negative magnetoresistance and pseudogap phase in superconducting A15-type La$_4$H$_{23}$

High pressure plays a crucial role in the field of superconductivity. Compressed hydride superconductors are leaders in the race for a material that can conduct electricity without resistance at high or even room temperature. In the present work, we have discovered new lanthanum superhydride, cubic A15-type La$_4$H$_{23}$, with lower stabilization pressure compared to the reported $\textit{fcc}$ LaH$_{10}$. Superconducting La$_4$H$_{23}$ was obtained by laser heating of LaH$_3$ with ammonia borane at about 120 GPa. Transport measurements reveal the maximum critical temperature $\textit{T}$$_{C}$(onset) = 105 K and the critical field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0) = 32 T at 118 GPa, as evidenced by the sharp drop of electrical resistance and the displacement of superconducting transitions in applied magnetic fields. Moreover, we provide evidence for unconventional transport associated with a pseudogap phase in La$_4$H$_{23}$ using pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T. A large negative magnetoresistance in the non-superconducting state below 40 K, quasi $\textit{T}$-linear electrical resistance, and a sign-change of its temperature dependence mark the emergence of pseudogap in this hydride. Discovered lanthanum hydride is a new member of the A15 family of superconductors with $\textit{T}$$_C$ exceeding the boiling point of liquid nitrogen.

Raisins in a Hydrogen Pie: Ultrastable Cesium and Rubidium Polyhydrides

We proposed a new method for synthesis of metal polyhydrides via high-pressure thermal decomposition of corresponding amidoboranes in diamond anvil cells. Within this approach, we synthesized molecular semiconducting cesium ($\textit P4/nmm$-CsH$_7$, $\textit P$1-CsH$_{15+x}$) and rubidium (RbH$_{9-x}$) polyhydrides with a very high hydrogen content reaching 93 at%. Preservation of CsH$_7$ at near ambient conditions, confirmed both experimentally and theoretically, represents a significant advance in the stabilization of hydrogen-rich compounds. In addition, we synthesized two crystal modifications of RbH$_{9-x}$ with pseudo hexagonal and pseudo tetragonal structures identified by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. Both phases are stable at 8-10 GPa. This is an unprecedented low stabilization pressure for polyhydrides. These discoveries open up possibilities for modifying existing hydrogen storage materials to increase their efficiency.

High Throughput Inter-Layer Connecting Strategy for Multi-Layer Ultra-Dense Satellite Networks

Multi-layer ultra-dense satellite networks (MLUDSNs) have soared this meteoric to provide vast throughputd for globally diverse services. Differing from traditional monolayer constellations, MLUDSNs emphasize the spatial integration among layers, and its throughput may not be simply the sum of throughput of each layer. The hop-count of cross-layer communication paths can be reduced by deploying inter-layer connections (ILCs), augmenting MLUDSN's throughput. Therefore, it remains an open issue how to deploy ILCs to optimize the dynamic MLUDSN topology to dramatically raise throughput gains under multi-layer collaboration. This paper designs an ILC deployment strategy to enhance throughput by revealing the impacts of ILC distribution on reducing hop-count. Since deploying ILCs burdens the satellite with extra communication resource consumption, we model the ILC deployment problem as minimizing the average hop with limited ILCs, to maximize throughput. The proposed problem is a typical integer linear programming (ILP) problem, of which computational complexity is exponential as the satellite scale expands and the time evolves. Based on the symmetrical topology of each layer, we propose a two-phase deployment scheme to halve the problem scale and prioritize stable ILCs to reduce handover-count, which decreases the exponential complexity to a polynomial one, with 1% estimation error: Simulation results based on realistic megaconstellation information confirm that the optimal number of ILCs is less than P.S/2, where P and S are orbits and satellites per orbit. Besides, these ILCs deploy uniformly in each layer, which raises over 1.55x throughput than isolated layers.

Inter-domain Resource Collaboration in Satellite Networks: An Intelligent Scheduling Approach Towards Hybrid Missions

Since the next-generation satellite network consisting of various service function domains, such as communication, observation, navigation, etc., is moving towards large-scale, using single-domain resources is difficult to provide satisfied and timely service guarantees for the rapidly increasing mission demands of each domain. Breaking the barriers of independence of resources in each domain, and realizing the cross-domain transmission of missions to efficiently collaborate inter-domain resources is a promising solution. However, the hybrid scheduling of different missions and the continuous increase in the number of service domains have strengthened the differences and dynamics of mission demands, making it challenging for an efficient cross-domain mission scheduling (CMS). To this end, this paper first accurately characterizes the communication resource state of inter-satellite in real-time exploiting the sparse resource representation scheme, and systematically characterizes the differentiation of mission demands by conducting the mission priority model. Based on the information of resources and missions, we construct the top- and bottom-layer mission scheduling models of reward association exploiting the correlation of intra- and inter-domain mission scheduling and formulate the Markov decision process-based hierarchical CMS problem. Further, to achieve higher adaptability and autonomy of CMS and efficiently mitigate the impact of network scale, a hierarchical intelligent CMS algorithm is developed to dynamically adjust and efficiently match the CMS policy according to different mission demands. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has significant performance gain compared with independent domains and the existing CMS algorithms, and can still guarantee high service performance under different network scales.

Red AI? Inconsistent Responses from GPT3.5 Models on Political Issues in the US and China

The rising popularity of ChatGPT and other AI-powered large language models (LLMs) has led to increasing studies highlighting their susceptibility to mistakes and biases. However, most of these studies focus on models trained on English texts. Taking an innovative approach, this study investigates political biases in GPT's multilingual models. We posed the same question about high-profile political issues in the United States and China to GPT in both English and simplified Chinese, and our analysis of the bilingual responses revealed that GPT's bilingual models' political "knowledge" (content) and the political "attitude" (sentiment) are significantly more inconsistent on political issues in China. The simplified Chinese GPT models not only tended to provide pro-China information but also presented the least negative sentiment towards China's problems, whereas the English GPT was significantly more negative towards China. This disparity may stem from Chinese state censorship and US-China geopolitical tensions, which influence the training corpora of GPT bilingual models. Moreover, both Chinese and English models tended to be less critical towards the issues of "their own" represented by the language used, than the issues of "the other." This suggests that GPT multilingual models could potentially develop a "political identity" and an associated sentiment bias based on their training language. We discussed the implications of our findings for information transmission and communication in an increasingly divided world.

Quasi Two-dimensional Vortex Matter in ThH$_{10}$ Superhydride

A comprehensive study of the vortex phases and vortex dynamics is presented for a recently discovered high-temperature superconductor ThH$_{10}$ with $\textit{T}$$_C$ = 153 K at 170 GPa. The obtained results strongly suggest a quasi two-dimensional (2D) character of the vortex glass phase transition in ThH$_{10}$. The activation energy yields a logarithmic dependence $\textit{U}$$_0$ $\propto$ ln($\textit{H}$) on magnetic field in a low field region and a power law dependence $\textit{U}$$_0$ ~ $\textit{H}$$^{-1}$ in a high field region, signaling a crossover from 2D regime to 3D collective pinning regime, respectively. Additionally, a pinning force field dependence showcases dominance of surface-type pinning in the vicinity of $\textit{T}$$_C$. Thermal activation energy ($\textit{U}$$_0$), derived within thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) theory, takes very high values above 2$\times$10$^5$ K together with the Ginzburg number $\textit{Gi}$ = 0.039 - 0.085, which is lower only than those of BiSrCaCuO cuprates and 10-3-8 family of iron based superconductor. This indicates the enormous role of thermal fluctuations in the dynamics of the vortex lattice of superhydrides, the physics of which is similar to the physics of unconventional high-temperature superconductors.

Evidence for Pseudogap Phase in Cerium Superhydrides: CeH$_{10}$ and CeH$_9$

Polyhydride superconductors have been shown to possess metallic properties with a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type superconducting ground state. Here, we provide evidence for unconventional transport associated with a pseudogap phase in cubic cerium superhydride CeH$_{10}$ ($\textit{T}$$_C$ = 116 K) at pressure of 115-125 GPa. A large negative magnetoresistance in the non-superconducting state below 90 K, quasi $\textit{T}$-linear electrical resistance, and a sign-change of its temperature dependence mark the emergence of this phase. We studied the magnetic phase diagrams and the upper critical fields $\textit{B}$$_{C2}$(T) of CeH$_{10}$, CeH$_9$, and CeD$_9$ in pulsed fields up to 70 T. $\textit{B}$$_{C2}$(T) of CeH$_9$ and CeD$_9$ exhibits pronounced saturation at low temperatures in accordance with the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, whereas CeH$_{10}$ stands out in particular, as it does not obey this model. Our observations, therefore, reveal the unconventional nature of non-superconducting state of cerium superhydride CeH$_{10}$.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Enabled Joint Backscattering and Communication

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) as an essential topic in the sixth-generation (6G) communications aims to enhance communication performance or mitigate undesired transmission. However, the controllability of each reflecting element on RIS also enables it to act as a passive backscatter device (BD) and transmit its information to reader devices. In this paper, we propose a RIS-enabled joint backscattering and communication (JBAC) system, where the backscatter communication coexists with the primary communication and occupies no extra spectrum. Specifically, the RIS modifies its reflecting pattern to act as a passive BD and reflect its own information back to the base station (BS) in the backscatter communication, while helping the primary communication from the BS to the users simultaneously. We further present an iterative active beamforming and reflecting pattern design to maximize the user average transmission rate of the primary communication and the goodput of the backscatter communication by solving the formulated multi-objective optimization problem (MOOP). Numerical results fully uncover the impacts of the number of reflecting elements and the reflecting patterns on the system performance, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Important practical implementation remarks have also been discussed.

Nonlinear Topological Mechanics in Elliptically Geared Isostatic Metamaterials

Despite the extensive studies of topological systems, the experimental characterizations of strongly nonlinear topological phases have been lagging. To address this shortcoming, we design and build elliptically geared isostatic metamaterials. Their nonlinear topological transitions can be realized by collective soliton motions, which stem from the transition of nonlinear Berry phase. Endowed by the intrinsic nonlinear topological mechanics, surface polar elasticity and dislocation-bound zero modes can be created or annihilated as the topological polarization reverses orientation. Our approach integrates topological physics with strongly nonlinear mechanics and promises multi-phase structures at the micro and macro scales.

Observation of fourfold Dirac nodal line semimetal and its unconventional surface responses in sonic crystals

Three-dimensional nodal line semimetals (NLSMs) provide remarkable importance for both enrich topological physics and wave management. However, NLSMs realized in acoustic systems are twofold bands degenerate, which are called Weyl NLSMs. Here, we first report on the experimental observation of novel Dirac NLSMs with fourfold degenerate in sonic crystals. We reveal that the topological properties of the Dirac NLSMs are entirely different than that of the conventional Weyl NLSMs. The Berry phase related to the Dirac nodal line (DNL) is 2π, which results in the surface responses of the Dirac NLSMs with two radically different situations: a torus surface state occupying the entire surface Brillouin zone (SBZ) and without any surface state in the SBZ. We further reveal that topological surface arcs caused by DNL can change from open to closed contours. The findings of Dirac NLSMs and their unique surface response may provoke exciting frontiers for flexible manipulation of acoustic surface waves.

Strongly Nonlinear Topological Phases of Cascaded Topoelectrical Circuits

Circuits provide ideal platforms of topological phases and matter, yet the study of topological circuits in the strongly nonlinear regime, has been lacking. We propose and experimentally demonstrate strongly nonlinear topological phases and transitions in one-dimensional electrical circuits composed of nonlinear capacitors. Nonlinear topological interface modes arise on domain walls of the circuit lattices, whose topological phases are controlled by the amplitudes of nonlinear voltage waves. Experimentally measured topological transition amplitudes are in good agreement with those derived from nonlinear topological band theory. Our prototype paves the way towards flexible metamaterials with amplitude-controlled rich topological phases and is readily extendable to two and three-dimensional systems that allow novel applications.

Vortex phase dynamics in yttrium superhydride YH$_6$ at megabar pressures

A comprehensive study of the vortex phases and vortex dynamics is presented for a recently discovered high-temperature superconductor YH$_6$ with T$_C$ (onset) of 215 K under pressure of 200 GPa.Thermal activation energy (U$_0$) is derived in the framework of thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) theory. The activation energy yields a power law dependence U$_0$ $\propto$ H$^α$ on magnetic field with a possible crossover at a field around 8-10 Tesla. Furthermore, we have depicted the vortex phase transition from vortex-glass to vortex-liquid state according to the vortex-glass theory. Finally, vortex phase diagram is constructed for the first time for superhydrides. Very high estimated values of flux flow barriers U$_0$(H) = 1.5-7*10$^4$ K together with high crossover fields makes YH$_6$ a rather outstanding superconductor as compared to most cuprates and iron-based systems. The Ginzburg number for YH$_6$ Gi = 3-7*10$^{-3}$ indicates that thermal fluctuations are not so strong and cannot broaden superconducting transitions in weak magnetic fields.

Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior of Superconducting SnH$_4$

We studied chemical interaction of Sn with H$_2$ by X-ray diffraction methods at pressures of 180-210 GPa. A previously unknown tetrahydride SnH$_4$ with a cubic structure (${fcc}$) exhibiting superconducting properties below ${T}$$_C$ = 72 K was obtained; the formation of a high molecular ${C2/m}$-SnH$_{14}$ superhydride and several lower hydrides, ${fcc}$ SnH$_2$ and ${C2}$-Sn$_{12}$H$_{18}$, was also detected. The temperature dependence of critical current density ${J}$$_C$(T) in SnH$_4$ yields the superconducting gap 2$Δ$(0) = 23 meV at 180 GPa. SnH$_4$ has unusual behavior in strong magnetic fields: ${B,T}$-linear dependences of magnetoresistance and the upper critical magnetic field ${B}$$_{C2}$(T) $\propto$ (${T}$$_C$ - ${T}$). The latter contradicts the Wertheimer-Helfand-Hohenberg model developed for conventional superconductors. Along with this, the temperature dependence of electrical resistance of ${fcc}$ SnH$_4$ in non-superconducting state exhibits a deviation from what is expected for phonon-mediated scattering described by the Bloch-Grüneisen model, and is beyond the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. Such anomalies occur for many superhydrides, making them much closer to cuprates than previously believed.

Deterministic All-versus-nothing Proofs of Bell Nonlocality Induced from Qudit Non-stabilizer States

Recently, a kind of deterministic all-versus-nothing proof of Bell nonlocality induced from the qubit non-stabilizer state was proposed, breaking the tradition that deterministic all-versus-nothing proofs are always derived from stabilizer states. A trivial generalization to the qudit (d is even) version is by using a special basis map, but such a proof can still be reduced to the qubit version. So far, whether high dimensional non-stabilizer states can induce nontrivial deterministic all-versus-nothing proofs of Bell nonlocality remains unknown. Here we present an example induced from a specific four-qudit non-stabilizer state (with d = 4), showing that such proofs can be constructed in high dimensional scenarios as well.
