Optical Monitoring and Long-term Optical Spectral Variability of BL Lacertae Object S5 0716+714

We present photometric observations of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 with a temporal resolution of 120 s in the Sloan i' and r' bands. These observations were conducted using the Comet Search Program telescope at Xingming Observatory from 2018 December 22 to 2020 February 15, and more than 5600 effective images were obtained on each filter across 79 nights. Additionally, we compiled long-term variability data spanning 34 yr in the optical UBVRI bands. Using the power-enhanced F-test and nested ANOVA test, we found intraday variability (IDV) on 31 nights and possible IDV on 20 nights in the i' band. Similarly, IDV was detected on 35 nights in the r' band, while possible IDV was observed on 22 nights. The minimum variability timescale is 7.33 minutes, and the estimated black hole masses are (0.68- 5.12)*10^8 Msun. The spectral variability and long-term optical light curves reveal a bluer-when-brighter trend on intraday timescales. The long-term optical flux density and spectral index exhibit periodic variability with a timescale of about 1038 days. An anticorrelation between optical flux and spectral index was observed, with a time delay of -140 days. Variability across different optical bands exhibited a strong correlation, with no discernible time lag. From the IDV, spectral variability, correlation, and time delays between different bands, we conclude that these radiation characteristics may result from the shock-in-jet model scenario.

Optical Flares Detected on a Contact Binary: The First Photometric and Spectroscopic Analysis of a Long-period Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary HAT 307-0007476

This paper presents the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of a long-period totally eclipsing contact binary (HAT 307-0007476) for the first time. This system is a low mass ratio ($q\sim0.114$) and medium contact binary ($f\sim37.1\%$). Two flare events were detected in multiple bands observations in December 2022. The interval between the two flare events is 4 days. The average duration of these two flares is about 2289s. Both the two flares achieve the energy levels of superflares. The excess emission of the H$_\alpha$ line in the LAMOST spectra of this object was analyzed, indicating its chromospheric activity. The $O-C$ diagram showed a long-term orbital period increase, which is due to the mass transfer between the two component stars. We conclude that HAT 307-0007476 is currently in a stable region based on both $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$ and the comparison between the instability parameters and its current values.

Search for and analysis of eclipsing binaries in the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey field. I. RA: $\textbf{23}^h$$\textbf{01}^m$$\textbf{51}^s$, Dec: +34$^\circ$36$^\prime$45$^{\prime \prime}$

Eclipsing binaries (EBs) play an important astrophysical role in studying stellar properties and evolution. By analyzing photometric data in the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey field, RA: $23^h$$01^m$$51.00^s$, Dec: +34$^\circ$36$^\prime$45$^{\prime \prime}$, 48 EBs are detected and 2 are newly discovered. This specific field has been observed 52 times by the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Survey DR 9, which facilitates a comprehensive analysis of the EBs. For EBs with LAMOST medium-resolution spectra, radial velocity curves were obtained, and their precise orbital parameters were determined by simultaneously analyzing photometric light curves and radial velocity curves. For the other EBs with only photometric light curves, we used the q-search or the temperature ratio method to determine their initial mass ratios and then determined the orbital parameters. It is found that 15 EBs belong to detached systems, 1 to semi-detached systems, and 32 to contact systems. Based on the O-C analysis for 26 EBs with sufficient eclipsing times, we found a long-term decrease in the orbital period of 11 EBs and a continuous increase of 5 EBs, which are due to the material transfer between the two components. The O-C curve of 1 EB shows a distinct periodic variation, which is caused by the light travel time effect, and the third body is likely to be a black hole. By applying the spectral subtraction method to 13 EBs with LAMOST medium-resolution spectra, 10 systems exhibit distinct H$\alpha$ emission lines, in which 1 system exhibits double-peaked lines near phases 0.25 and 0.75, implying strong chromospheric activity. In the mass-luminosities and mass-radius distributions, most of the more massive components are less evolved than the less massive ones.

Detection of the lowest mass ratio contact binary in the universe: TYC 3801-1529-1

This paper presents the first analysis of the contact binary TYC 3801-1529-1. We observed four sets of multiple bands complete light curves and one set of radial velocity curve of the primary component. Based on a simultaneous investigation of our observed and TESS light curves and the radial velocity curve, we found that TYC 3801-1529-1 is an extremely low-mass-ratio, medium contact binary with $q=0.0356$, with the contribution of the third light at a level of about 10\%. Its mass ratio is lower than V1187 Her, making TYC 3801-1529-1 the lowest mass-ratio contact binary ever found in the universe. The light curves observed in 2022 are asymmetric, which is aptly explained by a hot spot on the primary component. A 16-year eclipse timings analysis indicates a secular increase orbital period with a rate of dp/dt$=7.96(\pm0.35)\times10^{-7}$ d yr$^{-1}$. We studied the stability of this target and identified that not only the value of $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$, but also the mass ratio surpass the unstable boundary. Hence, TYC 3801-1529-1 presents a challenge to theoretical research and ought to be considered a progenitor of a contact binary merger.

Two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the minimum mass ratio

The cut-off mass ratio is under debate for contact binaries. In this paper, we present the investigation of two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the low mass ratio limit. It is found that the mass ratios of VSX J082700.8+462850 (hereafter J082700) and 1SWASP J132829.37+555246.1 (hereafter J132829) are both less than 0.1 ($q\sim0.055$ for J082700, and $q\sim0.089$ for J132829). J082700 is a shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $\sim$19%, and J132829 is a deep contact system with a fillout factor of $\sim$70%. The $O-C$ diagram analysis indicated that both the two systems manifest long-term period decrease. In addition, J082700 exhibits a cyclic modulation which is more likely resulted from Applegate mechanism. In order to explore the properties of extremely low mass ratio contact binaries (ELMRCBs), we carried out a statistical analysis on contact binaries with mass ratios of $q\lesssim0.1$ and discovered that the values of $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$ of three systems are greater than 1/3. Two possible explanations can interpret this phenomenon. One is that some physical processes, unknown to date, are not considered when Hut presented the dynamically instability criterion. The other is that the dimensionless gyration radius ($k$) should be smaller than the value we used ($k^2=0.06$). We also found that the formation of ELMRCBs possibly has two channels. The study of evolutionary states of ELMRCBs reveals that their evolutionary states are similar with those of normal W UMa contact binaries.

Photometric study and absolute parameters estimation of six totally eclipsing contact binaries

High precision CCD observations of six totally eclipsing contact binaries were presented and analyzed. It is found that only one target is an A-type contact binary (V429 Cam), while the others are W-type contact ones. By analyzing the times of light minima, we discovered that two of them exhibit secular period increase while three manifest long-term period decrease. For V1033 Her, a cyclic variation superimposed on the long-term increase was discovered. By comparing the Gaia distances with those calculated by the absolute parameters of 173 contact binaries, we found that Gaia distance can be applied to estimate absolute parameters for most contact binaries. The absolute parameters of our six targets were estimated by using their Gaia distances. The evolutionary status of contact binaries was studied, we found that the A- and W- subtype contact binaries may have different formation channels. The relationship between the spectroscopic and photometric mass ratios for 101 contact binaries was presented. It is discovered that the photometric mass ratios are in good agreement with the spectroscopic ones for almost all the totally eclipsing systems, which is corresponding to the results derived by Pribulla et al. and Terrell & Wilson.

The first light curve modeling and orbital period change investigation of nine contact binaries around the short period cut-off

In this paper, we present the first light curve synthesis and orbital period change analysis of nine contact binaries around the short period limit. It is found that all these systems are W-subtype contact binaries. One of them is a medium contact system while the others are shallow contact ones. Four of them manifest obvious O'Connell effect explained by a dark spot or hot spot on one of the component stars. Third light was detected in three systems. By investigating orbital period variations, we found that four of the targets display a secular period decrease while the others exhibit a long-term period increase. The secular period decrease is more likely caused by angular momentum loss while the long-term period increase is due to mass transfer from the less massive component to the more massive one. Based on the statistic of 19 ultrashort period contact binaries with known orbital period changes, we found that seven of them display long-term decrease (three of them also exhibit cyclic variations), ten of them manifest long-term increase while two of them only show cyclic variation and that most of them are shallow contact binaries supporting the long timescale angular momentum loss theory suggested by Stepien. For the three deep contact systems, we found that they are probably triple systems. The tertiary companion plays an essential role during their formation and evolution.

Photometric investigations on two totally eclipsing contact binaries: V342 UMa and V509 Cam

By analyzing two sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V342 UMa and three sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V509 Cam, we determined that the two systems are both W-subtype contact binaries and that V342 UMa shows a shallow contact configuration, while V509 Cam exhibits a medium contact configuration. Since both of them are totally eclipsing binaries, the physical parameters derived only by the photometric light curves are reliable.Meanwhile, the period changes of the two targets were analyzed based on all available eclipsing times. We discovered that V342 UMa shows long-term period decrease with a rate of $-1.02(\pm0.54)\times10^{-7}$ days/year and that V509 Cam exhibits long-term period increase with a rate of $3.96(\pm0.90)\times10^{-8}$ days/year. Both the conservative mass transfer and AML via magnetic stellar winds can interpret the long-term period decrease of V342 UMa. The long-term period increase of V509 Cam can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive star to the more massive one. The absolute parameters of the two binaries were estimated according to the Gaia distances and our derived photometric solution results. This method can be extended to other contact binaries without radial velocities but with reliable photometric solutions. The evolutionary states of them were discussed, we found that they reveal identical properties of other W-subtype contact systems.

Contact binaries at the short period cut-off I. statistics and the first photometric investigations of ten totally eclipsing systems

The period distribution of contact binaries exhibits a very sharp short period cut-off at 0.22 days. In order to provide valuable information on this short period limit, we observed ten totally eclipsing contact binaries with orbital periods near this cut-off. By detailed analysis using W-D code, we determined that two of these systems are A-subtype contact binaries while the others are W-subtype contact binaries and all the targets show shallow contact configurations. Half of the targets exhibit stellar spot activity and four of them have third light. A statistical work on well studied USPCBs was carried out, and physical parameters of fifty-five USPCBs were obtained. Some common properties for these systems were derived. Due to the study of the period-color diagram of USPCBs, we found that the period-color relation of USPCBs is different from other W UMa type contact binaries and USPCBs are metal poor old stars. In addition, the evolutionary states of these systems were discussed by constructing the color-density diagram. We derived that the evolutionary states of the two components of USPCBs show identical characteristics of other contact binaries despite slower evolutionary status caused by smaller mass. We suggested that both the fully convective limit claimed by Rucinski (1992) and the AML theory recommended by Stepien (2006) can produce the short period cut-off and a tertiary companion is very important during the formation of the short period contact binaries by removing angular momentum from the host eclipsing pairs under certain circumstances.

Transiting Exoplanet Monitoring Project (TEMP). III. On the Relocation of the Kepler-9~b Transit

The Kepler-9 system harbors three known transiting planets. The system holds significant interest for several reasons. First, the outer two planets exhibit a period ratio that is close to a 2:1 orbital commensurability, with attendant dynamical consequences. Second, both planets lie in the planetary mass "desert" that is generally associated with the rapid gas agglomeration phase of the core accretion process. Third, there exist attractive prospects for accurately measuring both the sky-projected stellar spin-orbit angles as well as the mutual orbital inclination between the planets in the system. Following the original \textit{Kepler} detection announcement in 2010, the initially reported orbital ephemerides for Kepler-9~b and c have degraded significantly, due to the limited time base-line of observations on which the discovery of the system rested. Here, we report new ground-based photometric observations and extensive dynamical modeling of the system. These efforts allow us to photometrically recover the transit of Kepler-9~b, and thereby greatly improve the predictions for upcoming transit mid-times. Accurate ephemerides of this system are important in order to confidently schedule follow-up observations of this system, for both in-transit Doppler measurements as well as for atmospheric transmission spectra taken during transit.

WES - Weihai Echelle Spectrograph

The Weihai Echelle Spectrograph (WES) is the first fiber-fed echelle spectrograph for astronomical observation in China. It is primarily used for chemical abundance and asteroseismology studies of nearby bright stars, as well as radial velocity detections for exoplanets. The optical design of WES is based on the widely demonstrated and well-established white-pupil concept. We describe the WES in detail and present some examples of its performance. A single exposure echelle image covers the spectral region 371-1,100 nm in 107 spectral orders over the rectangular CCD. The spectral resolution $R=λ/Δλ$ changes from 40,600 to 57,000 through adjusting the entrance slit width from full to 2.2 pixels sampling at the fiber-exit. The limiting magnitude scales to $V=8$ with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of more than 100 in $V$ for an hour exposure, at the spectral resolution R$\approx$40,000 in the median seeing of 1.7$^{\prime\prime}$ at Weihai Observatory (WHO) for the 1-meter telescope. The radial velocity (RV) measurement accuracy of WES is estimated to be $<$10 m/s in 10 months (302 days) and better than 15 m/s in 4.4 years (1,617 days) in the recent data processing.

GRB Spectra in the complex of synchrotron and Compton processes

Under the steady state condition, the spectrum of electrons is investigated by solving the continuity equation under the complex radiation of both the synchrotron and Compton processes. The resulted GRB spectrum is a broken power law in both the fast and slow cooling phases. On the basis of this electron spectrum, the spectral indices of the Band function in four different phases are presented. In the complex radiation frame, the detail investigation on physical parameters reveals that both the reverse shock photosphere model and the forward shock with strong coupling model can answer the $α\sim -1$ problem. A possible marginal to fast cooling phase transition in GRB 080916C is discussed. The time resolved spectra in different pulses of GRB 100724B, GRB 100826A and GRB 130606B are investigated. We found that the flux is proportional to the peak energy in almost all pulses. The phases for different pulses are determined according to the spectral index revolution. We found the strong correlations between spectral indices and the peak energy in GRB 100826A, which can be explained by the Compton effect in the fast cooling phase. However, the complex scenario predicts a steeper index for the injected electrons, which challenges the acceleration mechanism in GRBs.

Reverberation measurement of the inner radius of the dust torus in NGC 4151 during 2008-2013

We investigate the correlation between infrared (JHKL) and optical (B) fluxes of the variable nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 using partially published data for the last 6 years (2008-2013.). Here we are using the same data as in Oknyansky et al. (2014), but include also optical (B) data from Guo et al. We find that the lag of flux in all the infrared bands is the same, 40 +- 6 days, to within the measurement accuracy. Variability in the J and K bands is not quite simultaneous, perhaps due to the differing contributions of the accretion disk in these bands. The lag found for the K band compared with the B band is not significantly different from earlier values obtained for the period 2000-2007. However, finding approximately the same lags in all IR bands for 2008-2013 differs from previous results at earlier epochs when the lag increased with increasing wavelength. Examples of almost the same lag in different IR bands are known for some other active nuclei. In the case of NGC 4151 it appears that the relative lags between the IR bands may be different in different years. The available data, unfortunately, do not allow us to investigate a possible change in the lags during the test interval. We discuss our results in the framework of the standard model where the variable infrared radiation is mainly due to thermal re-emission from the part of the dusty torus closest to the central source. There is also a contribution of some IR emission from the accretion disk, and this contribution increases with decreasing wavelength. Some cosmological applications of obtained results are discussed.

Sky Brightness at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University

In this paper, a total of about 28000 images in $V$ and $R$ band obtained on 161 nights using the one-meter optical telescope at Weihai Observatory (WHO) of Shandong University since 2008 to 2012 have been processed to measure the sky brightness. It provides us with an unprecedented database, which can be used to study the variation of the sky brightness with the sky position, the moonlight contribution, and the twilight sky brightness. The darkest sky brightness is about 19.0 and 18.6 $mag$ $arcsec^{-2}$ in $V$ and $R$ band, respectively. An obvious darkening trend is found at the first half of the night at WHO, and the variation rate is much larger in summer than that in other seasons. The sky brightness variation depends more on the azimuth than on the altitude of the telescope pointing for WHO. Our results indicate that the sky brightness at WHO is seriously influenced by the urban light.

Optical Monitoring of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4151 and Possible Periodicities in the Historical Light Curve

We report B, V, and R band CCD photometry of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with the 1.0-m telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University and the 1.56-m telescope at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory from 2005 December to 2013 February. Combining all available data from literature, we have constructed a historical light curve from 1910 to 2013 to study the periodicity of the source using three different methods (the Jurkevich method, the Lomb-Scargle periodogram method and the Discrete Correlation Function method). We find possible periods of P_1=4\pm0.1, P_2=7.5\pm0.3 and P_3=15.9\pm0.3 yr.

The photometric system of the One-meter Telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University

The one-meter telescope at Weihai Observatory of Shandong University is an f/8 Cassegrain telescope. Three sets of filters, including Johnson--Cousins UBVRI, Sloan Digital Sky Survey u$'$g$'$r$'$i$'$z$'$ and Strömgren uvby, are installed in a dual layer filterwheel. The photometric system and the CCD camera are introduced in this paper, followed by detailed analysis of their performances, and determination of the relevant parameters, including gain, readout noise, dark current and linearity of the CCD camera. In addition, the characteristics of the site astro-climate condition, including typical seeing, clear nights statistics, and average sky brightness were studied systematically based on data gathered from Sep. 2007 to Aug. 2013, and were reported in this work. Photometric calibrations were done using 8 nights Landolt standard star observations, which yielded transformation coefficients, photometry precision and system throughput. The limiting magnitudes were simulated using the derived calibration parameters and classic observation conditions at WHO.
