Deviations to cobimaximal mixing in a 3+1 neutrino scenario

Cobimaximal mixing remains a viable approximate pattern since the predicted atmospheric angle ($π/4$) and Dirac CP phase ($-π/2$) are compatible with current experimental data at the $3σ$ level. In this work, we investigate how an additional sterile neutrino state breaks the cobimaximal mixing and the underlying $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry in a $3+1$ neutrino scenario. Given the strong constraints already imposed on active-sterile mixings, we examine the resulting restrictions on the model parameter space, assuming a small symmetry breaking induced by the sterile state. We derive predictions for the relevant model parameters, active-sterile mixing angles, and Dirac CP-violating phases, by considering small deviations from the symmetric limit. We also analyze the allowed combinations of Majorana phases through their impact on the effective Majorana mass governing neutrinoless double beta decay. Current experimental limits on this process impose severe constraints on the inverted ordering realization of the $3+1$ scenario, excluding the small breaking regime within the parameter ranges considered. In contrast, the normal ordering case remains viable and predicts values of the effective Majorana mass that lie within the sensitivity reach of upcoming neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Approximate magic symmetry in a cobimaximal scenario of Majorana neutrinos

The searches for an underlying pattern in neutrino masses have motivated different proposals for textures in the neutrino mass matrix, which is also related to particular arrangements of the mixing matrix. Current experimental determinations of neutrino mixings have restricted some of the most studied proposals. In this work, we propose a new combined constraint on the neutrino mass matrix arising from the cobimaximal mixing and the magic symmetry in a model-independent fashion. We show that both conditions cannot be fulfilled simultaneously in an exact but rather in an approximate way. We have found that the Majorana CP phases are tightly restricted within this approach, leading to well-defined regions in the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude. The small symmetry breaking requirement allows us to determine the Majorana phases for specific values of the lightest neutrino mass, consistent with current bounds on the mixing angles, neutrinoless double-beta decay, and cosmology results.

Deviations to $μ-τ$ symmetry in a cobimaximal scenario

Within the different patterns of the neutrino mixing matrix, the cobimaximal mixing remains a plausible possibility for understanding the flavor structure of neutrinos as it is consistent with current experimental data. Such a pattern is related to a concrete form of the mass matrix, displaying a $μ-τ$ reflection symmetry, which has motivated many theoretical investigations in recent years. In this paper, we discuss the effects of the Majorana phases over a $μ-τ$ symmetric mass matrix obtained from a cobimaximal mixing matrix. We investigate how these phases could be restricted through deviations from the symmetric scenario and the most precise determinations of the mixing parameters. Some of our relations could be tested with future results.

Restricting Majorana phases in the Tri-Bi-Maximal limit

The Tri-Bi-Maximal pattern has been long investigated as the symmetric scenario that lies behind the neutrino mixing matrix. It predicts a null reactor angle and hence forbids $CP$ violation in the lepton sector, which is in contrast to the current experimental determinations. We explore different deviations from this pattern to restore the compatibility with the latest fits of neutrino mixing parameters. We consider two unitary matrices to correct the symmetric pattern, each of them is written in terms of one single angle and one complex phase, which will be constrained by the experimental mixings and from symmetry restrictions in the mass matrix. We note that these correction parameters would allow us to obtain simultaneous information about the Dirac and Majorana $CP$ phases in some specific scenarios. We show that the predicted values lead to sharped regions for the neutrinoless double beta decay amplitude, in the selected cases, that could be tested with forthcoming results.

Deviations to Tri-Bi-Maximal mixing in the limit of $μ-τ$ symmetry

In the limit of an approximate $μ-τ$ symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix, we explore deviations to the Tri-Bi-Maximal mixing pattern in the neutrino sector. We consider two different ansatzes for the corrected pattern to predict the current values of neutrino mixing parameters. We show that it is possible to constrain the Majorana $CP$ phases by studying their correlation to the mixing parameters and we study their effects on neutrinoless double beta decay observables. These predictions are sharp for the quasi-degenerate ordering and can be tested in upcoming experiments.

Leptonic CP phases near the $μ-τ$ symmetric limit

The neutrino masses and mixings indicated by current neutrino oscillation experiments suggest that the neutrino mass matrix possesses an approximate $μ-τ$ exchange symmetry. In this study, we explore the neutrino parameter space and show that if a small $μ-τ$ symmetry breaking is considered, the Majorana $CP$ phases must be unequal and non-zero independently of the neutrino mass scale. Moreover, a small $μ-τ$ symmetry breaking favors quasi-degenerate masses. We also show that Majorana phases are strongly correlated with the Dirac $CP$ violating phase. Within this framework, we obtain robust predictions for the values of the Majorana phases when the experimental indications for the Dirac $CP$ phase are used.

Generating $θ_{13}$ from sterile neutrinos in $μ- τ$ symmetric models

The smallness of the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle as observed in neutrino oscillation experiments can be understood through an approximated $μ- τ$ exchange symmetry in the neutrino mass matrix. Using recent oscillation neutrino data, but assuming no \textit{CP} violation, we study $μ-τ$ breaking parameter space to establish the conditions under which such a breaking could have a perturbative origin. According to the so-obtained conditions, we suggest that a sterile neutrino, matching LSND/MiniBooNE neutrino oscillation results, could provide the necessary ingredients to properly fix atmospheric and $θ_{13}$ mixing angles to observable values, without exceeding the sterile neutrino fraction bound in solar oscillations. In such a scenario, we analyze the general effect of a fourth neutrino on the prediction for the effective $m_{ee}$ majorana mass parameter.
