The many facets of a hyperbolic tetrahedron: open and closed triangulations of 3d gravity

We study a model of 3d gravity relevant to the open sector of a CFT ensemble. The quantum theory is the open Virasoro TQFT, obtained by restricting the full open-closed Virasoro TQFT to a subclass of admissible manifolds. We show that it computes gravitational path integrals on compact regions with fixed-length boundary conditions for states above the black hole threshold, and fixed-angle boundary conditions for states below the threshold. Focusing on a special class of manifolds involving only boundary Wilson loops, we further show that the relation between Conformal Turaev-Viro theory and the diagonal sector of two copies of Virasoro TQFT arises naturally from an open-closed duality.

On the temperature dependence of quasinormal modes in SYK and holography

It was recently found that the quasinormal modes (or Ruelle--Pollicott resonances) of the SYK model at infinite temperature form a Christmas tree shape, reminiscent of AdS black holes. We generalise this computation to finite temperature, allowing us to continuously connect the infinite temperature results to the low temperature regime dual to JT gravity. We contrast the movement of the quasinormal modes with a few examples: various AdS black holes, dynamical phase transitions, and the large $p$ SYK chain. We find that the relaxation rate increases monotonically with temperature only at strong coupling, corresponding to the gravitational regime. Byproducts of our investigations are new results on operator growth that may be of independent interest.

On random matrix statistics of 3d gravity

We show that 3d gravity on manifolds that are topologically a Riemann surface times an interval $Σ_{g,n}\times I$ with end-of-the-world branes at the ends of the interval is described by a random matrix model, namely the Virasoro minimal string. Because these manifolds have $n$ annular asymptotic boundaries, the path integrals naturally correspond to spectral correlators of open strings upon inverse Laplace transforms. For $g=0$ and $n=2$, we carry out an explicit path integration and find precise agreement with the universal random matrix expression. For Riemann surfaces with negative Euler characteristic, we evaluate the path integral as a gravitational inner product between states prepared by two copies of Virasoro TQFT. Along the way, we clarify the effects of gauging the mapping class group and the connection to chiral 3d gravity.

Crossing symmetry of OPE statistics

We study the crossing symmetry of the ensemble of large-$c$ 2D CFTs defined through 3D gravity. A central observation is that statistical moments of OPE coefficients are not independent; rather, lower and higher moments are strongly correlated. Using Virasoro TQFT, we clarify how these correlations arise and how they guarantee consistency across OPE channels. Our analysis introduces the new notion of pseudo-hyperbolic manifolds, which are a certain class of non-hyperbolic manifolds whose partition functions are nevertheless related to those of hyperbolic ones. These manifolds serve as bridges that help manifest the crossing symmetry of the CFT ensemble.

Higher-spin localized shocks

In the context of AdS/CFT, gravitational shockwaves serve as a geometric manifestation of boundary quantum chaos. We study this connection in general diffeomorphism-invariant theories involving an arbitrary number of bosonic fields. Specifically, we demonstrate that theories containing spin-2 or higher-spin fields generally admit classical localized shockwave solutions on black hole backgrounds, whereas spin-0 and spin-1 theories do not. As in the gravitational case, these higher-spin shockwaves provide a means to compute the out-of-time-order correlator. Both the Lyapunov exponent and the butterfly velocity are found to universally agree with predictions from pole skipping. In particular, higher-spin fields lead to a Lyapunov exponent that violates the chaos bound and a butterfly velocity that may exceed the speed of light.

Wormholes with Ends of the World

We study classical wormhole solutions in 3D gravity with end-of-the-world (EOW) branes, conical defects, kinks, and punctures. These solutions compute statistical averages of an ensemble of boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) related to universal asymptotics of OPE data extracted from the 2D conformal bootstrap. Conical defects connect BCFT bulk operators; branes join BCFT boundary intervals with identical boundary conditions; kinks (1D defects along branes) link BCFT boundary operators; and punctures (0D defects) are endpoints where conical defects terminate on branes. We provide evidence for a correspondence between the gravity theory and the ensemble. In particular, the agreement of the $g$-function dependence results from an underlying topological aspect of the on-shell EOW brane action, from which a BCFT analogue of the Schlenker-Witten theorem also follows.

Open-closed 3d gravity as a random ensemble

We investigate an ensemble of boundary CFTs within the framework of a tensor model recently constructed to model 3d quantum gravity. The incorporation of CFT borders introduces new elements to the gravity theory. In particular, it leads to an open-closed extension of Virasoro TQFT, which in the classical limit gives rise to 3d gravity with tensionful end-of-the-world branes. It also provides predictions for off-shell manifolds with bordered asymptotic boundaries, such as the annulus wormhole. As an application, we construct a purely open variant of the tensor model to study a purely open bootstrap problem in the context of CFT triangulation. We also briefly discuss the extension to non-orientable CFTs.

A new energy inequality in AdS

We study time symmetric initial data for asymptotically AdS spacetimes with conformal boundary containing a spatial circle. Such $d$-dimensional initial data sets can contain $(d-2)$-dimensional minimal surfaces if the circle is contractible. We compute the minimum energy of a large class of such initial data as a function of the area $A$ of this minimal surface. The statement $E \ge E_{min}(A)$ is analogous to the Penrose inequality which bounds the energy from below by a function of the area of a $(d-1)$-dimensional minimal surface.

Pole skipping in holographic theories with gauge and fermionic fields

Using covariant expansions, recent work showed that pole skipping happens in general holographic theories with bosonic fields at frequencies $\mathrm{i}(l_b-s) 2πT$, where $l_b$ is the highest integer spin in the theory and $s$ takes all positive integer values. We revisit this formalism in theories with gauge symmetry and upgrade the pole-skipping condition so that it works without having to remove the gauge redundancy. We also extend the formalism by incorporating fermions with general spins and interactions and show that their presence generally leads to a separate tower of pole-skipping points at frequencies $\mathrm{i}(l_f-s)2πT$, $l_f$ being the highest half-integer spin in the theory and $s$ again taking all positive integer values. We also demonstrate the practical value of this formalism using a selection of examples with spins $0,\frac{1}{2},1,\frac{3}{2},2$.

Holographic entanglement from the UV to the IR

In AdS/CFT, observables on the boundary are invariant under renormalization group (RG) flow in the bulk. In this paper, we study holographic entanglement entropy under bulk RG flow and find that it is indeed invariant. We focus on tree-level RG flow, where massive fields in a UV theory are integrated out to give the IR theory. We explicitly show that in several simple examples, holographic entanglement entropy calculated in the UV theory agrees with that calculated in the IR theory. Moreover, we give an argument for this agreement to hold for general tree-level RG flow. Along the way, we generalize the replica method of calculating holographic entanglement entropy to bulk theories that include matter fields with nonzero spin.

All-order celestial OPE from on-shell recursion

We determine tree level, all-order celestial operator product expansions (OPEs) of gluons and gravitons in the maximally helicity violating (MHV) sector. We start by obtaining the all-order collinear expansions of MHV amplitudes using the inverse soft recursion relations that they satisfy. These collinear expansions are recast as celestial OPE expansions in bases of momentum as well as boost eigenstates. This shows that inverse soft recursion for MHV amplitudes is dual to OPE recursion in celestial conformal field theory.

Pole skipping in holographic theories with bosonic fields

We study pole skipping in holographic CFTs dual to diffeomorphism invariant theories containing an arbitrary number of bosonic fields in the large $N$ limit. Defining a weight to organize the bulk equations of motion, a set of general pole-skipping conditions are derived. In particular, the frequencies simply follow from general covariance and weight matching. In the presence of higher spin fields, we find that the imaginary frequency for the highest-weight pole-skipping point equals the higher-spin Lyapunov exponent which lies outside of the chaos bound. Without higher spin fields, we show that the energy density Green's function has its highest-weight pole skipping happening at a location related to the OTOC for arbitrary higher-derivative gravity, with a Lyapunov exponent saturating the chaos bound and a butterfly velocity matching that extracted from a shockwave calculation. We also suggest an explanation for this matching at the metric level by obtaining the on-shell shockwave solution from a regularized limit of the metric perturbation at the skipped pole.

An infinity of black holes

In general relativity (without matter), there is typically a one parameter family of static, maximally symmetric black hole solutions labelled by their mass. We show that there are situations with many more black holes. We study asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions in six and seven dimensions having a conformal boundary which is a product of spheres cross time. We show that the number of families of static, maximally symmetric black holes depends on the ratio, $λ$, of the radii of the boundary spheres. As $λ$ approaches a critical value, $λ_{c}$, the number of such families becomes infinite. In each family, we can take the size of the black hole to zero, obtaining an infinite number of static, maximally symmetric non-black hole solutions. We discuss several applications of these results, including Hawking-Page phase transitions and the phase diagram of dual field theories on a product of spheres, new positive energy conjectures, and more.

A Tale of Two Butterflies: An Exact Equivalence in Higher-Derivative Gravity

We prove the equivalence of two holographic computations of the butterfly velocity in higher-derivative theories with Lagrangian built from arbitrary contractions of curvature tensors. The butterfly velocity characterizes the speed at which local perturbations grow in chaotic many-body systems and can be extracted from the out-of-time-order correlator. This leads to a holographic computation in which the butterfly velocity is determined from a localized shockwave on the horizon of a dual black hole. A second holographic computation uses entanglement wedge reconstruction to define a notion of operator size and determines the butterfly velocity from certain extremal surfaces. By direct computation, we show that these two butterfly velocities match precisely in the aforementioned class of gravitational theories. We also present evidence showing that this equivalence holds in all gravitational theories. Along the way, we prove a number of general results on shockwave spacetimes.

Boundary Causality Violating Metrics in Holography

Even for holographic theories that obey boundary causality, the full bulk Lorentzian path integral includes metrics that violate this condition. This leads to the following puzzle: The commutator of two field theory operators at spacelike-separated points on the boundary must vanish. However, if these points are causally related in a bulk metric, then the bulk calculation of the commutator will be nonzero. It would appear that the integral over all metrics of this commutator must vanish exactly for holography to hold. This is puzzling since it must also be true if the commutator is multiplied by any other operator. Upon a careful treatment of boundary conditions in holography, we show how the bulk path integral leads to a natural resolution of this puzzle.

Descendants in celestial CFT and emergent multi-collinear factorization

Multi-collinear factorization limits provide a window to study how locality and unitarity of scattering amplitudes can emerge dynamically from celestial CFT, the conjectured holographic dual to gauge and gravitational theories in flat space. To this end, we first use asymptotic symmetries to commence a systematic study of conformal and Kac-Moody descendants in the OPE of celestial gluons. Recursive application of these OPEs then equips us with a novel holographic method of computing the multi-collinear limits of gluon amplitudes. We perform this computation for some of the simplest helicity assignments of the collinear particles. The prediction from the OPE matches with Mellin transforms of the expressions in the literature to all orders in conformal descendants. In a similar vein, we conclude by studying multi-collinear limits of graviton amplitudes in the leading approximation of sequential double-collinear limits, again finding a consistency check against the leading order OPE of celestial gravitons.

Consequences of Analytic Boundary Conditions in AdS

We investigate the effects of an analytic boundary metric for smooth asymptotically anti-de Sitter gravitational solutions. The boundary dynamics is then completely determined by the initial data due to corner conditions that all smooth solutions must obey. We perturb a number of familiar static solutions and explore the boundary dynamics that results. We find evidence for a nonlinear asymptotic instability of the planar black hole in four and six dimensions. In four dimensions we find indications of at least exponential growth, while in six dimensions, it appears that a singularity may form in finite time on the boundary. This instability extends to pure AdS (at least in the Poincare patch). For the class of perturbations we consider, there is no sign of this instability in five dimensions.

The high-energy collision of black holes in higher dimensions

We compute the gravitational wave energy $E_{\rm rad}$ radiated in head-on collisions of equal-mass, nonspinning black holes in up to $D=8$ dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes for boost velocities $v$ up to about $90\,\%$ of the speed of light. We identify two main regimes: Weak radiation at velocities up to about $40\,\%$ of the speed of light, and exponential growth of $E_{\rm rad}$ with $v$ at larger velocities. Extrapolation to the speed of light predicts a limit of $12.9\,\%$ $(10.1,~7.7,~5.5,~4.5)\,\%$. of the total mass that is lost in gravitational waves in $D=4$ $(5,\,6,\,7,\,8)$ spacetime dimensions. In agreement with perturbative calculations, we observe that the radiation is minimal for small but finite velocities, rather than for collisions starting from rest. Our computations support the identification of regimes with super Planckian curvature outside the black-hole horizons reported by Okawa, Nakao, and Shibata [Phys.~Rev.~D {\bf 83} 121501(R) (2011)].
