Path components of $\mathrm{G}_2$-moduli spaces may be non-aspherical

Starting from Joyce's generalised Kummer construction, we exhibit non-trivial families of $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds over the two dimensional sphere by resolving singularities with a twisted family of Eguchi-Hanson spaces. We establish that the comparison map $\mathcal{G}_2^{\mathrm{tf}}(M) /\!\!/ \mathrm{Diff}(M)_0 \rightarrow \mathcal{G}_2^{\mathrm{tf}}(M) / \mathrm{Diff}(M)_0$ is a fibration over each path components with Eilenberg Mac Lane spaces as fibres, which allows us to show that these families remain non-trivial in $\mathcal{G}_2^{\mathrm{tf}}(M) / \mathrm{Diff}(M)_0$. In addition, we construct a new invariant based on characteristic classes that allows us to show that different resolutions give rise to different elements in the moduli space.

Immersed but not embedded homology classes

We provide the first documented examples of immersions of closed oriented manifolds which are not homologous to embeddings, thus answering a question posed by Zhenhua Liu. In these examples we show that for any representing self-transverse immersion the double points must represent a non-trivial homology class in the source manifold. We also provide examples of Steenrod representable integral homology classes which are not represented by immersions.

Stably diffeomorphic manifolds and the realisation of modified surgery obstructions

For every $k \geq 2$ we construct infinitely many $4k$-dimensional manifolds that are all stably diffeomorphic but pairwise not homotopy equivalent. Each of these manifolds has hyperbolic intersection form and is stably parallelisable. In fact we construct infinitely many such infinite sets. To achieve this we prove a realisation result for appropriate subsets of Kreck's modified surgery monoid $\ell_{2q+1}(\mathbb{Z}[π])$, analogous to Wall's realisation of the odd-dimensional surgery obstruction $L$-group $L_{2q+1}^s(\mathbb{Z}[π])$.

The Witt groups of extended quadratic forms over Z

We study quadratic form parameters $Q$ over the integers and extended quadratic forms with values in $Q$, which we call $Q$-forms. Certain form parameters $Q$ appeared in Wall's work on the classification of almost closed $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds via $Q$-forms. Baues, Ranicki and Schlichting independently developed definitions of extended quadratic forms in more general settings; when restricted to the ring $\mathbb{Z}$, each of those definitions is equivalent to those studied here. In this paper we classify all quadratic form parameters $Q$ over the integers, determine the category of quadratic form parameters $\mathbf{FP}$ and compute the Witt group functor, \[ W_0 \colon \mathbf{FP} \to \mathbf{Ab}, \quad Q \mapsto W_0(Q),\] where $\mathbf{Ab}$ is the category of finitely generated abelian groups and $W_0(Q)$ is the Witt group of nonsingular $Q$-forms.

Infinite homotopy stable class for 4-manifolds with boundary

We show that for every odd prime $q$, there exists an infinite family $\{M_i\}_{i=1}^{\infty}$ of topological 4-manifolds that are all stably homeomorphic to one another, all the manifolds $M_i$ have isometric rank one equivariant intersection pairings and boundary $L(2q, 1) # (S^1 \times S^2)$, but they are pairwise not homotopy equivalent via any homotopy equivalence that restricts to a homotopy equivalence of the boundary.

Contact open books with flexible pages

We give an elementary topological obstruction for a manifold $M$ of dimension $2q{+}1 \geq 7$ to admit a contact open book with flexible Weinstein pages and $c_1(π_2(M)) = 0$: if the torsion subgroup of the $q$-th integral homology group is non-zero, then no such contact open book exists. We achieve this by proving that a symplectomorphism of a flexible Weinstein manifold acts trivially on cohomology. We also produce examples of non-trivial loops of flexible contact structures using related ideas.

Turning vector bundles

We define a turning of a rank-$2k$ vector bundle $E \to B$ to be a homotopy of bundle automorphisms $\psi_t$ from $\mathbb{Id}_E$, the identity of $E$, to $-\mathbb{Id}_E$, minus the identity, and call a pair $(E, \psi_t)$ a turned bundle. We investigate when vector bundles admit turnings and develop the theory of turnings and their obstructions. In particular, we determine which rank-$2k$ bundles over the $2k$-sphere are turnable. If a bundle is turnable, then it is orientable. In the other direction, complex bundles are turned bundles and for bundles over finite $CW$-complexes with rank in the stable range, Bott's proof of his periodicity theorem shows that a turning of $E$ defines a homotopy class of complex structure on $E$. On the other hand, we give examples of rank-$2k$ bundles over $2k$-dimensional spaces, including the tangent bundles of some $2k$-manifolds, which are turnable but do not admit a complex structure. Hence turned bundles can be viewed as a generalisation of complex bundles. We also generalise the definition of turning to other settings, including other paths of automorphisms, and we relate the generalised turnability of vector bundles to the topology of their gauge groups and the computation of certain Samelson products.

Simply-connected manifolds with large homotopy stable classes

For every $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq 2$ we construct $n$ pairwise homotopically inequivalent simply-connected, closed $4k$-dimensional manifolds, all of which are stably diffeomorphic to one another. Each of these manifolds has hyperbolic intersection form and is stably parallelisable. In dimension $4$, we exhibit an analogous phenomenon for spin$^{c}$ structures on $S^2 \times S^2$. For $m\geq 1$, we also provide similar $(4m{-}1)$-connected $8m$-dimensional examples, where the number of homotopy types in a stable diffeomorphism class is related to the order of the image of the stable $J$-homomorphism $π_{4m-1}(SO) \to π^s_{4m-1}$.

On $H^*(BPU_n; \mathbb{Z})$ and Weyl group invariants

For the projective unitary group $PU_n$ with a maximal torus $T_{PU_n}$ and Weyl group $W$, we show that the integral restriction homomorphism \[\rho_{PU_n} \colon H^*(BPU_n;\mathbb{Z})\rightarrow H^*(BT_{PU_n};\mathbb{Z})^W\] to the integral invariants of the Weyl group action is onto. We also present several rings naturally isomorphic to $H^*(BT_{PU_n};\mathbb{Z})^W$. In addition we give general sufficient conditions for the restriction homomorphism $\rho_G$ to be onto for a connected compact Lie group $G$.

The derivative map for diffeomorphism of disks: An example

We prove that the derivative map $d \colon \mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^k) \to Ω^kSO_k$, defined by taking the derivative of a diffeomorphism, can induce a nontrivial map on homotopy groups. Specifically, for $k = 11$ we prove that the following homomorphism is non-zero: $$ d_* \colon π_5\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^{11}) \to π_{5}Ω^{11}SO_{11} \cong π_{16}SO_{11} $$ As a consequence we give a counter-example to a conjecture of Burghelea and Lashof and so give an example of a non-trivial vector bundle $E$ over a sphere which is trivial as a topological $\mathbb{R}^k$-bundle (the rank of $E$ is $k=11$ and the base sphere is $S^{17}$.) The proof relies on a recent result of Burklund and Senger which determines those homotopy 17-spheres bounding $8$-connected manifolds, the plumbing approach to the Gromoll filtration due to Antonelli, Burghelea and Kahn, and an explicit construction of low-codimension embeddings of certain homotopy spheres.

The existence of contact structures on 9-manifolds

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed orientable 9-manifold M to admit an almost contact structure. The conditions are stated in terms of the Stiefel-Whitney classes of M and other more subtle homotopy invariants of M. By a fundamental result of Borman, Eliashberg and Murphy, M admits an almost contact structure if and only if M admits an over-twisted contact structure. Hence we give necessary and sufficient conditions for M to admit an over-twisted contact structure and we prove that if N is another closed 9-manifold which is homotopy equivalent to M, then M admits an over-twisted contact structure if and only if N does. In addition, for W_i(M) the i-th integral Stiefel-Whitney class of M, we prove that if W_3(M) = 0 then W_7(M) = 0.

Intermediate curvatures and highly connected manifolds

We show that after forming a connected sum with a homotopy sphere, all (2j-1)-connected 2j-parallelisable manifolds in dimension 4j+1, j > 0, can be equipped with Riemannian metrics of 2-positive Ricci curvature. The condition of 2-positive Ricci curvature is defined to mean that the sum of the two smallest eigenvalues of the Ricci tensor is positive at every point. This result is a counterpart to a previous result of the authors concerning the existence of positive Ricci curvature on highly connected manifolds in dimensions 4j-1 for j > 1, and in dimensions 4j+1 for j > 0 with torsion-free cohomology.

Connected sum decompositions of high-dimensional manifolds

The classical Kneser-Milnor theorem says that every closed oriented connected 3-dimensional manifold admits a unique connected sum decomposition into manifolds that cannot be decomposed any further. We discuss to what degree such decompositions exist in higher dimensions and we show that in many settings uniqueness fails in higher dimensions.

Exotic G_2-manifolds

We exhibit the first examples of closed 7-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with holonomy G_2 that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These are also the first examples of closed Ricci-flat manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. The examples are generated by applying the twisted connected sum construction to Fano 3-folds of Picard rank 1 and 2. The smooth structures are distinguished by the generalised Eells-Kuiper invariant introduced by the authors in arXiv:1406.2226.

The smooth classification of 4-dimensional complete intersections

We prove the "Sullivan Conjecture" on the classification of 4-dimensional complete intersections up to diffeomorphism. Here an $n$-dimensional complete intersection is a smooth complex variety formed by the transverse intersection of $k$ hypersurfaces in $CP^{n+k}$. Previously Kreck and Traving proved the 4-dimensional Sullivan Conjecture when 64 divides the total degree (the product of the degrees of the defining hypersurfaces) and Fang and Klaus proved that the conjecture holds up to the action of the group of homotopy 8-spheres $\Theta_8 = Z/2$. Our proof involves several new ideas, including the use of the Hambleton-Madsen theory of degree-$d$ normal maps, which provide a fresh perspective on the Sullivan Conjecture in all dimensions. This leads to an unexpected connection between the Segal Conjecture for $S^1$ and the Sullivan Conjecture.

On The Topological Period-Index Problem over 8-manifolds

We establish upper bounds of the indices of topological Brauer classes over a closed orientable 8-manifolds. In particular, we verify the Topological Period-Index Conjecture (TPIC) for topological Brauer classes over closed orientable 8-manifolds of order not congruent to 2 mod 4. In addition, we provide a counter-example which shows that the TPIC fails in general for closed orientable 8-manifolds.

The rational homotopy type of (n-1)-connected manifolds of dimension up to 5n-3

We define the Bianchi-Massey tensor of a topological space X to be a linear map from a subquotient of the fourth tensor power of H*(X). We then prove that if M is a closed (n-1)-connected manifold of dimension at most 5n-3 (and n > 1) then its rational homotopy type is determined by its cohomology algebra and Bianchi-Massey tensor, and that M is formal if and only if the Bianchi-Massey tensor vanishes. We use the Bianchi-Massey tensor to show that there are many (n-1)-connected (4n-1)-manifolds that are not formal but have no non-zero Massey products, and to present a classification of simply-connected 7-manifolds up to finite ambiguity.

The Topological Period-Index Conjecture for spin$^c$ 6-manifolds

The Topological Period-Index Conjecture is an hypothesis which relates the period and index of elements of the cohomological Brauer group of a space. It was identified by Antieau and Williams as a topological analogue of the Period-Index Conjecture for function fields. In this paper we show that the Topological Period-Index Conjecture holds and is in general sharp for spin$^c$ 6-manifolds. We also show that it fails in general for 6-manifolds.
