Chimera states in bursting neurons

We study the existence of chimera states in pulse-coupled networks of bursting Hindmarsh-Rose neurons with nonlocal, global and local (nearest neighbor) couplings. Through a linear stability analysis, we discuss the behavior of stability function in the incoherent (i.e. disorder), coherent, chimera and multi-chimera states. Surprisingly, we find that chimera and multi-chimera states occur even using local nearest neighbor interaction in a network of identical bursting neurons alone. This is in contrast with the existence of chimera states in populations of nonlocally or globally coupled oscillators. A chemical synaptic coupling function is used which plays a key role in the emergence of chimera states in bursting neurons. Existence of chimera, multi-chimera, coherent and disordered states are confirmed by means of the recently introduced statistical measures and mean phase velocity.

Targeting engineering synchronization in chaotic systems

A method of targeting engineering synchronization states in two identical and mismatch chaotic systems is explained in details. The method is proposed using linear feedback controller coupling for engineering synchronization such as mixed synchronization, linear and nonlinear generalized synchronization and targeting fixed point. The general form of coupling design to target any desire synchronization state under unidirectional coupling with the help of Lyapunov function stability theory is derived analytically. A scaling factor is introduced in the coupling definition to smooth control without any loss of synchrony. Numerical results are done on two mismatch Lorenz systems and two identical Sprott oscillators.

Generalized counter-rotating oscillators: Mixed synchronization

In this paper, we report mixed synchronization between two counter rotating chaotic oscillators. We describe a procedure how to obtain a counter rotating oscillator for generalized oscillators. We elaborate the method with numerical examples of the Sprott system, Pikovsky-Rabinovich (PR) circuit model. Noise-induced mixed synchronization is also reported in PR circuit model. The physical realization of mixed synchronization in an electronic circuit of two counters-rotating Sprott systems also shown.

Mixed-lag synchronization in coupled counter-rotating oscillators

We report mixed lag synchronization in coupled counter-rotating oscillators. The trajectories of counter-rotating oscillators has opposite directions of rotation in uncoupled state. Under diffusive coupling via a scalar variable, a mixed lag synchronization emerges when a parameter mismatch is induced in two counter-rotating oscillators. In the state of mixed lag synchronization, one pair of state variables achieve synchronization shifted in time while another pair of state variables are in antisynchronization, however, they are too shifted by the same time. Numerical example of the paradigmatic R{ö}ssler oscillator is presented and supported by electronic experiment.

How to induce multiple delays in coupled chaotic oscillators?

Lag synchronization is a basic phenomenon in mismatched coupled systems, delay coupled systems and time-delayed systems. It is characterized by a lag configuration that establishes a unique time shift between all the state variables of the coupled systems. In this report, an attempt is made how to induce multiple lag configurations in coupled systems when different pairs of state variables attain different time shift. A design of coupling is presented to realize this multiple lag synchronization. Numerical illustration is given using examples of the Rössler system and the slow-fast Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model. The multiple lag scenario is physically realized in an electronic circuit of two Sprott systems.

Enhancing Synchrony in Chaotic Oscillators by Dynamic Relaying

In a chain of mutually coupled oscillators, the coupling threshold for synchronization between the outermost identical oscillators decreases when a type of impurity (in terms of parameter mismatch) is introduced in the inner oscillator(s). The outer oscillators interact indirectly via dynamic relaying, mediated by the inner oscillator(s). We confirm this enhancing of critical coupling in the chaotic regimes of Rössler system in absence of coupling delay and in Mackey-Glass system with delay coupling. The enhancing effect is experimentally verified in electronic circuit of Rössler oscillators.

Design of coupling for synchronization in time-delayed systems

We report a design of delay coupling for targeting desired synchronization in delay dynamical systems. We target synchronization, antisynchronization, lag-, antilag- synchronization, amplitude death (or oscillation death) and generalized synchronization in mismatched oscillators. A scaling of the size of an attractor is made possible in different synchronization regimes. We realize a type of mixed synchronization where synchronization, antisynchronization coexist in different pairs of state variables of the coupled system. We establish the stability condition of synchronization using the Krasovskii-Lyapunov function theory and the Hurwitz matrix criterion. We present numerical examples using the Mackey-Glass system and a delay Rössler system.

Synchronization in counter-rotating oscillators

An oscillatory system can have clockwise and anticlockwise senses of rotation. We propose a general rule how to obtain counter-rotating oscillators from the definition of a dynamical system and then investigate synchronization. A type of mixed synchronization emerges in counter-rotating oscillators under diffusive scalar coupling when complete synchronization and antisynchronization coexist in different state variables. Stability conditions of mixed synchronization are obtained analytically in Rossler oscillator and Lorenz system. Experimental evidences of mixed synchronization are given for limit cycle as well as chaotic oscillators in electronic circuits.

Synchronization between variable time delayed systems and cryptography

In this letter we consider a prototype model which is described as an autonomous continuous time delayed differential equation with just one variable. The chaos has been investigated with variable delay time and the synchronization phenomenon is examined both numerically and analytically using the Krasovskii-Lyapunov functions. We have applied adaptive coupling law for synchronization, where the coupling equation also contains delay with modulated time. We also studied the effect of cryptography for this coupled system and the message extraction procedure is illustrated with the help of simulated results.
