Broken Lifshitz invariance, spin waves and hydrodynamics

In this paper, based on the basic principles of thermodynamics, we explore the hydrodynamic regime of interacting Lifshitz field theories in the presence of broken rotational invariance. We compute the entropy current and discover new dissipative effects those are consistent with the principle of local entropy production in the fluid. In our analysis, we consider both the parity even as well as the parity odd sector upto first order in the derivative expansion. Finally, we argue that the present construction of the paper could be systematically identified as that of the hydrodynamic description associated with \textit{spin waves} (away from the domain of quantum criticality) under certain limiting conditions.

On anisotropic black branes with Lifshitz scaling

In this paper, based on the method of scalar perturbations, we construct the \textit{anisotropic} charged Lifshitz background perturbatively upto leading order in the anisotropy. We perform our analysis both in the extremal as well as in the non extremal limit. Finally, we probe the so called superfluid phase of the boundary theory and explore the effects of anisotropy on the superconducting condensate.

Entanglement rules for holographic Fermi surfaces

In this paper, based on the notion of Gauge/Gravity duality, we explore the laws of entanglement thermodynamics for most generic classes of Quantum Field Theories with hyperscaling violation. In our analysis, we note that for Quantum Field Theories with compressible \textit{quark} like excitation, the first law of entanglement thermodynamics gets modified due to the presence of an additional term that could be identified as the entanglement chemical potential associated with \textit{hidden} Fermi surfaces of the boundary theory. Most notably, we find that the so called entanglement chemical potential does not depend on the size of the entangling region and is purely determined by the quark d.o.f. encoded within the entangling region.

Holographic thermalization from non relativistic branes

In this paper, based on the fundamental principles of Gauge/gravity duality and considering a \textit{global quench}, we probe the physics of thermalization for a special class of strongly coupled non relativistic QFTs by computing the entanglement entropy of the plasma. The isometry group of such QFTs is comprised of the generators of the Schrödinger algebra which could be precisely realized as an isometry group of the killing generators of an asymptotically Schrödinger $ Dp $ brane space time. In our analysis, we note that during the pre local stages of the thermal equilibrium the entanglement entropy has a faster growth in time compared to its relativistic cousin. However, it shows a linear growth during the post local stages of thermal equilibrium where the so called tsunami velocity associated with the linear growth of the entanglement entropy saturates to that of its value corresponding to the relativistic scenario. Finally, we explore the saturation region and it turns out that one must constraint certain parameters of the theory in a specific way in order to have a discontinuous transitions at the point of saturation.

Holography for anisotropic branes with hyperscaling violation

In this paper, based on the principles of Gauge/gavity duality, we explore the field theory description of certain special class of strongly coupled hyperscaling violating QFTs in the presence of scalar deformations near the \textit{effective} dynamical scale ($ r_F $) of the theory. In the language of the AdS/CFT duality, the scalar deformations of the above type could be thought of as being sourced due to some massless scalar excitation in the bulk which explicitly break the $ SO(2) $ rotational invariance along the spatial directions of the brane. As a consequence of these deformations, it turns out that when we probe such QFTs in terms of its non-local observable like, the entanglement entropy as well as the Wilson operator they indeed receive finite contributions near the effective dynamical scale ($ r_F $) of the theory.

Magnetoconductivity in chiral Lifshitz hydrodynamics

In this paper, based on the principles of linear response theory, we compute the longitudinal DC conductivity associated with Lifshitz like fixed points in the presence of chiral anomalies in ($ 3+1 $) dimensions. In our analysis, apart from having the usual anomalous contributions due to chiral anomaly, we observe an additional and pure \textit{parity odd} effect to the magnetoconductivity which has its origin in the broken Lorentz (boost) invariance at a Lifshitz fixed point. We also device a holographic set up in order to compute ($ z=2 $) Lifshitz contributions to the magnetoconductivity precisely at strong coupling and low charge density limit.

Holographic charge transport in non commutative gauge theories

In this paper, based on the holographic techniques, we explore the hydrodynamics of charge diffusion phenomena in non commutative $ \mathcal{N}=4 $ SYM plasma at strong coupling. In our analysis, we compute the $ R $ charge diffusion rates both along commutative as well as the non commutative coordinates of the brane. It turns out that unlike the case for the shear viscosity, the DC conductivity along the non commutative direction of the brane differs significantly from that of its cousin corresponding to the commutative direction of the brane. Such a discrepancy however smoothly goes away in the limit of the vanishing non commutativity.

Towards holographic duals for anomalous supercurrents

In this paper, based on the usual techniques of Gauge/gravity duality, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau current for $ s $- wave superconductors in the presence of higher derivative corrections to the abelian gauge sector in the bulk. It has been observed that at sufficiently low temperatures the $U(1)$ current thus computed at the boundary varies inversely with the sixth power of the temperature ($ T $) which therefore gives rise to the phenomenon like anomalous superconductivity for the boundary theory. Interestingly we note that this anomalous effect is associated with the leading order higher derivative corrections to the $ U(1) $ sector in the bulk.

Quantum fluctuations and thermal dissipation in higher derivative gravity

In this paper, based on the $ AdS_{2}/CFT_{1} $ prescription, we explore the low frequency behavior of quantum two point functions for a special class of strongly coupled CFTs in one dimension whose dual gravitational counterpart consists of \textit{extremal} black hole solutions in higher derivative theories of gravity defined over an asymptotically AdS space time. The quantum critical points thus described are supposed to correspond to a very large value of the dynamic exponent ($ z\rightarrow \infty $). In our analysis, we find that quantum fluctuations are enhanced due to the higher derivative corrections in the bulk which in turn increases the possibility of quantum phase transition near the critical point. On the field theory side, such higher derivative effects would stand for the corrections appearing due to the finite coupling in the gauge theory. Finally, we compute the coefficient of thermal diffusion at finite coupling corresponding to Gauss Bonnet corrected charged Lifshitz black holes in the bulk. We observe an important crossover corresponding to $ z=5 $ fixed point.

Hydrodynamics from scalar black branes

In this paper, using the Gauge/gravity duality techniques, we explore the hydrodynamic regime of a very special class of strongly coupled QFTs that come up with an emerging UV length scale in the presence of a negative hyperscaling violating exponent. The dual gravitational counterpart for these QFTs consists of scalar dressed black brane solutions of exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model with Domain Wall (DW) asymptotics. In the first part of our analysis we compute the $ R $-charge diffusion for the boundary theory and find that (unlike the case for the pure $ AdS_{4} $ black branes) it scales quite non trivially with the temperature. In the second part of our analysis, we compute the $ η/s $ ratio both in the non extremal as well as in the extremal limit of these special class of gauge theories and it turns out to be eqaul to $ 1/4π$ in both the cases. These results therefore suggest that the quantum critical systems in the presence of (negative) hyperscaling violation at UV, might fall under a separate universality class as compared to those conventional quantum critical systems with the usual $ AdS_4 $ duals.

Holographic charge diffusion in non relativistic branes

In this paper, based on the principles of gauge/gravity duality and considering the so called \textit{hydrodynamic} limit we compute various charge transport properties for a class of strongly coupled non relativistic CFTs corresponding to $ z=2 $ fixed point whose dual gravitational counter part could be realized as the consistent truncation of certain non relativistic $ Dp $ branes in the non extremal limit. From our analysis we note that unlike the case for the AdS black branes, the charge diffusion constant in the non relativistic background scales differently with the temperature. This shows a possible violation of the universal bound on the charge conductivity to susceptibility ratio in the context of non relativistic holography.

Viscosity bound for anisotropic superfluids in higher derivative gravity

In the present paper, based on the principles of gauge/gravity duality we analytically compute the shear viscosity to entropy ratio corresponding to the superfluid phase in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. From our analysis we note that the ratio indeed receives a finite temperature correction below certain critical temperature. This proves the non universality of shear viscosity to entropy ratio in higher derivative theories of gravity. We also compute the upper bound for the Gauss-Bonnet coupling corresponding to the symmetry broken phase and note that the upper bound on the coupling does not seem to change as long as we are close to the critical point of the phase diagram. However the corresponding lower bound of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio seems to get modified due to the finite temperature effects.

Hall viscosity to entropy ratio in higher derivative theories

In this paper based on the basic principles of gauge/gravity duality we compute the hall viscosity to entropy ratio in the presence of various higher derivative corrections to the dual gravitational description embedded in an asymptotically $ AdS_{4} $ space time. As the first step of our analysis, considering the back reaction we impose higher derivative corrections to the abelian gauge sector of the theory where we notice that the ratio indeed gets corrected at the leading order in the coupling. Considering the probe limit as a special case we compute this leading order correction over the fixed background of the charged black brane solution. Finally we consider higher derivative ($ R^{2} $) correction to the gravity sector of the theory where we notice that the above ratio might get corrected at the sixth derivative level.

Chern-Simons vortices and holography

In this paper, based on the $ AdS_{4}/CFT_{3} $ duality, we have explored the precise connection between the abelian Chern-Simons (CS) Higgs model in ($ 2+1 $) dimensions to that with its dual gravitational counterpart living in one higher dimension. It has been observed that the $ U(1) $ current computed at the boundary of the $ AdS_{4} $ could be expressed as the local function of the vortex solution that has the remarkable structural similarity to that with the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) type local expression for the current associated with the Maxwell-CS type vortices in ($ 2+1 $) dimensions. In order to explore this duality a bit further we have also computed the coherence length as well as the magnetic penetration depth associated with these vortices. Finally using the knowledge of both the coherence length as well as the magnetic penetration depth we have computed the Ginzburg-Landau coefficient for the Maxwell-CS type vortices in ($ 2+1 $) dimensions.

Entropy current for non-relativistic fluid

We study transport properties of a parity-odd, non-relativistic charged fluid in presence of background electric and magnetic fields. To obtain stress tensor and charged current for the non-relativistic system we start with the most generic relativistic fluid, living in one higher dimension and reduce the constituent equations along the light-cone direction. We also reduce the equation satisfied by the entropy current of the relativistic theory and obtain a consistent entropy current for the non-relativistic system (we call it "canonical form" of the entropy current). Demanding that the non-relativistic fluid satisfies the second law of thermodynamics we impose constraints on various first order transport coefficients. For parity even fluid, this is straight forward; it tells us positive definiteness of different transport coefficients like viscosity, thermal conductivity, electric conductivity etc. However for parity-odd fluid, canonical form of the entropy current fails to confirm the second law of thermodynamics. Therefore, we need to add two parity-odd vectors to the entropy current with arbitrary coefficients. Upon demanding the validity of second law, we see that one can fix these two coefficients exactly.

Phase transition in black holes

The present thesis is devoted towards the study of various aspects of the phase transition phenomena occurring in black holes defined in an Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space. Based on the fundamental principles of thermodynamics and considering a grand canonical framework we examine various aspects of the phase transition phenomena occurring in AdS black holes. We analytically check that this phase transition between the smaller and larger mass black holes obey Ehrenfest relations defined at the critical point and hence confirm a second order phase transition. This include both the rotating and charged black holes in Einstein gravity. Apart from studying these issues, based on a canonical framework, we also investigate the critical behavior in charged AdS black holes. The scaling laws for these black holes are found to be compatible with the static scaling hypothesis. Finally, based on the usual framework of AdS/CFT duality, we investigate the phase transition phenomena occurring in charged hairy black holes defined in an asymptotically AdS space. Based on analytic calculations, and using the AdS/CFT dictionary, we explicitly compute the order-parameter for the dual CFT close to the critical point of the phase transition and found that the critical exponent associated with the condensation is $\frac{1}{2}$, which is the universal result of the mean field theory. Moreover, we also find that in the presence of an external magnetic field, the dual CFT exhibit a perfect diamagnetism at low temperatures, which may be regarded as the reminiscent of the so called Meissner effect.

Chern-Simons Superconductor

We study the effect of a bulk Chern-Simons (CS) term on 3+1 dimensional type II superconductor in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We holographically compute the super-current and find that it is non-local in nature. It receives non trivial corrections due to presence of the CS term. Considering a large limit of a parameter "lambda" (we call this limit as long wave length limit), which is effectively the high temperature limit of the theory, we find that this non-local super-current boils down to a local quantity. The leading term (without the CS term) of this current matches with the result of Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. We compute the effect of the CS term on GL current and find that the effect is highly suppressed at large temperature (~1/T^4). Finally, free energy of the vortex configuration has been calculated. The free energy also receives non trivial correction at the order of 1/lambda^2 in the long wave length approximation.

Holographic droplets in p-wave insulator/superconductor transition

In the present paper, based on the notion of marginally stable modes of vector perturbations in the AdS soliton back ground we investigate the magnetic field effect on holographic $ p $- wave insulator/superconductor transition in the probe limit. We perform explicit analytic calculations considering both Schwarzschild AdS soliton and Gauss Bonnet AdS soliton back grounds and obtain a unique relation between the chemical potential and the magnetic field near the critical point. We also extend our analysis for $ p+ip $- wave back ground in the presence of external magnetic field. In both the cases it is observed that the non abelian model exhibit \textit{droplet} solutions. Moreover it is also found that the increase in the value of the external magnetic field essentially reduces the size of the droplet and thereby makes the condensation harder.
