A comparative first-principles investigation of bilayer NbOX2 (X=Cl, Br, I) for Photocatalytic water splitting applications

Motivated by our previous work on bulk NbOX2 , where we have reported its high 1dielectric polarisation and finite piezoelectric response, this work extends to its 2D homo bilayer system to explore its potential for photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) were employed in probing the structural, electronic, optical, and photocatalytic properties of 2D homo bilayer NbOX2 (X = Cl, Br, and I). Our results show that structurally, NbOCl2 and NbOBr2 prefer AC bilayer stacking, while AB stacking was preferred by NbOI2 . All the considered bilayers are dynamically, thermally, and mechanically stable. From the analysis of electronic structure we have found a decreasing trend in the energy band gap as X goes down the group from Cl to I, with the position of the valence band maximum shifting upward along the high symmetry points. In terms of carrier mobility, all 2D bilayer systems possess high carrier mobility comparable to known 2D materials. It also exhibits an anisotropic carrier transfer property by which charge carriers are separated efficiently. These materials show similar trends to BiOI and PtSe2 , in which photocatalytic efficiency was increased by forming the multiple layers. The materials under investigation are suitable for photocatalytic water splitting under visible and ultraviolet regions with absorption coefficients of 105 cm-1.

Insights into the OER, ORR, and HER Activity of a New MXene-Family SnSiGeN4 Photocatalyst for Water Splitting: A First-Principles Study

The development of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for clean energy conversion remains a central challenge in materials science. Although platinum serves as the benchmark catalyst, its scarcity and high cost hinder large-scale deployment. In this study, we propose a newly predicted SnSiGeN4 MXene-family monolayer as a promising candidate for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Using first-principles calculations, we systematically investigated its electronic, vibrational, and optical properties across multiple exchange-correlation functionals, including hybrid approaches, revealing a wide and tunable band gap. Simulated infrared and Raman spectra further confirm the dynamical stability and the presence of catalytically active sites. Guided by these findings, we studied photocatalytic reaction analyses that demonstrate that the computed overpotentials for OER, ORR, and HER are comparable to those of Pt-based catalysts and outperform Ir-based systems, positioning SnSiGeN4 as a sustainable, high-performance platform for next-generation UV-visible-light-driven photocatalysis.

Exploring the functional properties of diamond-like quaternary compound Li$_2$ZnGeS$_4$ for potential energy applications: A theoretical approach

It is anticipated that wide-bandgap semiconductors (WBGSs) would be useful materials for energy production and storage. A well-synthesized, yet, scarcely explored diamond-like quaternary semiconductor-Li$_2$ZnGeS$_4$ has been considered for this work. Herein, we have employed two well-known functionals GGA and mGGA within a frame-work of density functional theory (DFT). We have explored the electronic, optical, mechanical, and piezo-electromechanical properties. Our results are in qualitative agreement with some of the previously reported data. The structural stabilities have been confirmed using the Born stability criteria and Molecular-dynamic (MD) simulations. Based on our findings, we claim that Li$_2$ZnGeS$_4$ is the most probable candidate for optoelectronics and piezoelectric applications.

Confinement-induced altermangetism in RuO$_2$ thin films

The magnetic properties of bulk RuO$_2$ remain a subject of active debate, despite its pivotal role in the emergence of altermagnetism. The latter is a novel paradigm in magnetic phases, characterized by the absence of net magnetization due to anti-parallel alignment of magnetic moments, yet displaying finite spin-splitting in the electronic band structure. This unique behavior unlocks opportunities for advanced applications in information technology devices. Recent experimental and theoretical investigations suggest that bulk RuO$_2$, contrary to prior assumptions, is non-magnetic. In this work, we propose the fabrication of RuO$_2$ thin films to robustly stabilize the altermagnetic phase. Unlike their bulk counterparts, thin films experience substantial strain relaxation, leading to a dramatic impact on the electronic structure that triggers a transition towards an altermagnetic behavior, which mimics the impact of an artificially applied Hubbard-U correction to account for electronic correlations. Our findings promote the use and exploration of thin films for the realization of spintronic devices based on altermagnets.
