Density dependent viscosity for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Compressible Navier-Stokes system

This paper is dedicated to the global existence of entropy weak solutions for the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Compressible Navier-Stokes system in a periodic domain $\Pi$ d when the shear viscosity $\mu$($\rho$) = $\mu$ $\rho$ with $\mu$ to be constant and $\lambda$($\rho$) = 0 assuming a pressure state law singular close to vacuum and a $\gamma$ power elsewhere with $\gamma$ > 1. It is important to recall that recently D. Marroquin and D. Wang (Arxiv 2024) have proved global existence of weak solutions in the spirit of P.-L. Lions and E. Feireisl when the shear and bulk viscosities are assumed to be constant without singular pressure part close to vacuum namely p($\rho$) = a$\rho$^$\gamma$ having in hand (from the energy estimate) u $\in$ L 2 (0, T\,; H 1 ($\Pi$ d )). Here the main difficulty is double first because of the possible degeneracy of the shear viscosity we have to derive a formal mathematical entropy generalizing the BD entropy equality: Up to the authors knowledge this is completely new. With this energy equality and the generalization of the BD entropy, it is then possible to prove global existence of entropy weak solutions for the system. An extra difficulty from a physical point of view remains namely if the density vanishes the compressible Navier-Stokes equations provides no information on the velocity field but the velocity itself is required in the equation related to the concentration. This explain why a singular pressure state law is needed close to vacuum in the spirit of what has been done in different papers see for instance D.

Dissipative Solutions to a Compressible Non-Newtonian Korteweg System with Density-Dependent Viscous Stress Tensor

The main objective of this paper is to prove that if capillarity effect is taken into account then there exist dissipative solutions to a system describing viscoplastic compressible flows with density dependent viscosities in a periodic domain $\T^d$ with $d=2,3$. We calculate the relative entropy inequality and in consequence show existence of dissipative solutions and the weak-strong uniqueness for this system. Our result extends the recent result concerning the link between Euler--Korteweg and Navier--Stokes--Korteweg systems for Newtonian flows (when the viscosity depends on the density) [See D.~Bresch, M. Gisclon, I. Lacroix-Violet, {\it Arch. Rational Mech. Anal.} (2019)] to non-Newtonian flows.

Discontinuous shear-thickening asymptotic for power-law systems related to compressible flows

In this paper we study the convergence of a power-law model for dilatant compressible fluids to a class of models exhibiting a maximum admissible shear rate, called thick compressible fluids. These kinds of problems were studied previously for elliptic equations, stating with the work of Bhattacharya, E. DiBenedetto and J. Manfredi [Rend. Sem. Mat. Univ. Politec. Torino 1989], and more recently for incompressible fluids by J.F. Rodrigues [J. Math. Sciences 2015]. Our result may be seen as an extension to the compressible setting of these previous works. Physically, this is motivated by the fact that the pressures generated during a squeezing flow are often large, potentially requiring the consideration of compressibility, see M. Fang and R. Gilbert [Z. Anal. Anwend 2004]. Mathematically, the main difficulty in the compressible setting concerns the strong hyperbolicparabolic coupling between the density and velocity field. We obtain two main results, the first concerning the one-dimensional non-stationary compressible power-law system while the second one concerns the semi-stationary multi-dimensional case. Finally, we present an extension in onedimension for a viscous Cauchy stress with singular dependence on the shear rate.

Global weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Korteweg Equations in one dimension

We prove the global existence of weak solutions of the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Korteweg (NSK) equations when the viscosity and the capillarity coefficients are power functions of the density, which may be zero on a set with positive measure. The proofs are based on a truncation argument combined with the Energy estimate and BD Entropy. Notably, we do not require any upper bound on the exponent of the power of the viscosity coefficient. In particular, we are able to consider very degenerate viscosity coefficient and to substantially improve previous results.

A duality method for mean-field limits with singular interactions

We introduce a new approach to derive mean-field limits for first- and second-order particle systems with singular interactions. It is based on a duality approach combined with the analysis of linearized dual correlations, and it allows to cover for the first time arbitrary square-integrable interaction forces at possibly vanishing temperature. In case of first-order systems, it allows to recover in particular the mean-field limit to the 2d Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. The approach also provides convergence rates.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions for Compresssible Navier--Stokes--Fourier Equations with the Truncated Virial Pressure Law

This paper concerns the existence of global weak solutions {\it à la Leray} for compressible Navier--Stokes--Fourier systems with periodic boundary conditions and the truncated virial pressure law which is assumed to be thermodynamically unstable. More precisely, the main novelty is that the pressure law is not assumed to be monotone with respect to the density. This provides the first global weak solutions result for the compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with such kind of pressure law which is strongly used as a generalization of the perfect gas law. The paper is based on a new construction of approximate solutions through an iterative scheme and fixed point procedure which could be very helpful to design efficient numerical schemes. Note that our method involves the recent paper by the authors published in Nonlinearity (2021) for the compactness of the density when the temperature is given.

The soundproof model of an acoustic--internal waves system with low stratification

This work is devoted to investigating a compressible fluid system with low stratification, which is driven by fast acoustic waves and internal waves. The approximation using a soundproof model is justified. More precisely, the soundproof model captures the dynamics of both the non-oscillating mean flows and the oscillating internal waves, while filters out the fast acoustic waves, of the compressible system with or without initial acoustic waves. Moreover, the fast-slow oscillation structure is investigated.

A new approach to the mean-field limit of Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations

This article introduces a novel approach to the mean-field limit of stochastic systems of interacting particles, leading to the first ever derivation of the mean-field limit to the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system for plasmas in dimension~$2$ together with a partial result in dimension~$3$. The method is broadly compatible with second order systems that lead to kinetic equations and it relies on novel estimates on the BBGKY hierarchy. By taking advantage of the diffusion in velocity, those estimates bound weighted $L^p$ norms of the marginals or observables of the system, uniformly in the number of particles. This allows to qualitatively derive the mean-field limit for very singular interaction kernels between the particles, including repulsive Poisson interactions, together with quantitative estimates for a general kernel in $L^2$.

Extension of the Hoff solutions framework to cover Navier-Stokes equations for a compressible fluid with anisotropic viscous-stress tensor

This paper deals with the Navier-Stokes system governing the evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid. We extend D. Hoff's intermediate regularity solutions framework by relaxing the integrability needed for the initial density which is usually assumed to be $L^{\infty}$. By achieving this, we are able to take into account general fourth order symmetric viscous-stress tensors with coefficients depending smoothly on the time-space variables. More precisely, in space dimensions $d=2,3$, under periodic boundary conditions, considering a pressure law $p(ρ)=aρ^γ$ whith $a>0$ respectively $γ\geq d/(4-d)$) and under the assumption that the norms of the initial data $\left( ρ_{0}-M,u_{0}\right) \in L^{2γ}\left(\mathbb{T}^{d}\right) \times(H^{1}(\mathbb{T}^{d}))^{d}$ are sufficiently small, we are able to construct global weak solutions. Above, $M$ denotes the total mass of the fluid while $\mathbb{T}$ with $d=2,3$ stands for periodic box. When comparing to the results known for the global weak solutions à la Leray, i.e. constructed assuming only the basic energy bounds, we obtain a relaxed condition on the range of admissible adiabatic coefficients $γ$.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions for the Anisotropic Compressible Stokes System

In this paper, we study the problem of global existence of weak solutions for the quasi-stationary compressible Stokes equations with an anisotropic viscous tensor. The key element of our proof is the control of a particular defect measure associated to the pressure which avoids the use of the eective ux. Using this new tool, we solve an open problem namely global existence of solutions {à} la Leray for such a system without assuming any restriction on the anisotropy amplitude. It provides a exible and natural way to treat compressible quasilinear Stokes systems which are important for instance in biology, porous media, supra-conductivity or other applications in the low Reynolds number regime.

Physical Relaxation Terms for Compressible Two-Phase Systems

In this note, we propose the first mathematical derivation of a macroscopic Baer-Nunziato type system for compressible two-phase flows allowing two pressure state laws depending on the different phases. By doing so, we extend the results obtained by the first author and M. Hillairet (Annales ENS 2019) to cover this important physical situation. A relaxation term in the mass fraction equation is obtained without closure assumptions contrarily to theoretical-physics literature dedicated to mixture theory, see for instance "Thermo-Fluid dynamics of Two Fluid Flows" by M. Ishii. The relaxation parameter is linked to the viscosities of the different fluids (which may be small for applications) and the relaxed quantity is linked to the laws chosen at interfaces of the two-fluid system at a mesoscale.

Mean-field limit and quantitative estimates with singular attractive kernels

This paper proves the mean field limit and quantitative estimates for many-particle systems with singular attractive interactions between particles. As an important example, a full rigorous derivation (with quantitative estimates) of the Patlak-Keller-Segel model in optimal subcritical regimes is obtained for the first time. To give an answer to this longstanding problem, we take advantage of a new modulated free energy and we prove some precise large deviation estimates encoding the competition between diffusion and attraction. Combined with the range of repulsive kernels, already treated in the s{é}minaire Laurent Schwartz proceeding [https://slsedp.centre-mersenne.org/journals/SLSEDP/ ], we provide the full proof of results announced by the authors in [C. R. Acad. Sciences Section Maths (2019)].

On the Exponential decay for Compressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with a Drag Term

In this paper, we consider global weak solutions to com-pressible Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations with density dependent viscosities , in a periodic domain $Ω= \mathbb T^3$, with a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. The main result concerns the exponential decay to equilibrium of such solutions using log-sobolev type inequalities. In order to show such a result, the starting point is a global weak-entropy solutions definition introduced in D. Bresch, A. Vasseur and C. Yu [12]. Assuming extra assumptions on the shear viscosity when the density is close to vacuum and when the density tends to infinity, we conclude the exponential decay to equilibrium. Note that our result covers the quantum Navier-Stokes system with a drag term.

Compressible Navier-Stokes equations with heterogeneous pressure laws

This paper concerns the existence of global weak solutions à la Leray for compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a pressure law that depends on the density and on time and space variables $t$ and $x$. The assumptions on the pressure contain only locally Lipschitz assumption with respect to the density variable and some hypothesis with respect to the extra time and space variables. It may be seen as a first step to consider heat-conducting Navier-Stokes equations with physical laws such as the truncated virial assumption. The paper focuses on the construction of approximate solutions through a new regularized and fixed point procedure and on the weak stability process taking advantage of the new method introduced by the two first authors with a careful study of an appropriate regularized quantity linked to the pressure.

Augmented Skew-Symetric System for Shallow-Water System with Surface Tension Allowing Large Gradient of Density

In this paper, we introduce a new extended version of the shallow water equations with surface tension which is skew-symmetric with respect to the L2 scalar product and allows for large gradients of fluid height. This result is a generalization of the results published by P. Noble and J.-P. Vila in [SIAM J. Num. Anal. (2016)] and by D. Bresch, F. Couderc, P. Noble and J.P. Vila in [C.R. Acad. Sciences Paris (2016)] which are restricted to quadratic forms of the capillary energy respectively in the one dimensional and two dimensional setting. This is also an improvement of the results by J. Lallement, P. Villedieu et al. published in [AIAA Aviation Forum 2018] where the augmented version is not skew-symetric with respect to the L2 scalar product. Based on this new formulation, we propose a new numerical scheme and perform a nonlinear stability analysis.Various numerical simulations of the shallow water equations are presented to show differences between quadratic (w.r.t the gradient of the height) and general surface tension energy when high gradients of the fluid height occur.

Functional inequalities and strong Lyapunov functionals for free surface flows in fluid dynamics

This paper is motivated by the study of Lyapunov functionals for four equations describing free surface flows in fluid dynamics: the Hele-Shaw and Mullins-Sekerka equations together with their lubrication approximations, the Boussinesq and thin-film equations. We identify new Lyapunov functionals, including some which decay in a convex manner (these are called strong Lyapunov functionals). For the Hele-Shaw equation and the Mullins-Sekerka equation, we prove that the $L^2$-norm of the free surface elevation and the area of the free surface are Lyapunov functionals, together with parallel results for the thin-film and Boussinesq equations. The proofs combine exact identities for the dissipation rates with functional inequalities. For the thin-film and Boussinesq equations, we introduce a Sobolev inequality of independent interest which revisits some known results and exhibits strong Lyapunov functionals. For the Hele-Shaw and Mullins-Sekerka equations, we introduce a functional which controls the $L^2$-norm of three-half spatial derivative. Under a mild smallness assumption on the initial data, we show that the latter quantity is also a Lyapunov functional for the Hele-Shaw equation, implying that the area functional is a strong Lyapunov functional. Precise lower bounds for the dissipation rates are established, showing that these Lyapunov functionals are in fact entropies. Other quantities are also studied such as Lebesgue norms or the Boltzmann's entropy.

Modulated Free Energy and Mean Field Limit

This is the document corresponding to the talk the first author gave at IH{É}S for the Laurent Schwartz seminar on November 19, 2019. It concerns our recent introduction of a modulated free energy in mean-field theory in BrJaWa [4]. This physical object may be seen as a combination of the modulated potential energy introduced by S. Serfaty [See Proc. Int. Cong. Math. (2018)] and of the relative entropy introduced in mean field limit theory by P.-E. Jabin, Z. Wang [See Inventiones 2018]. It allows to obtain, for the first time, a convergence rate in the mean field limit for Riesz and Coulomb repulsive kernels in the presence of viscosity using the estimates in Du [8] and Se1 [20]. The main objective in this paper is to explain how it is possible to cover more general repulsive kernels through a Fourier transform approach as announced in BrJaWa [4] first in the case $σ$N $\rightarrow$ 0 when N $\rightarrow$ +$\infty$ and then if $σ$ > 0 is fixed. Then we end the paper with comments on the particle approximation of the Patlak-Keller-Segel system which is associated to an attractive kernel and refer to [C.R.

On Mean Field Limit and Quantitative Estimates with a Large Class of Singular Kernels: Application to the Patlak-Keller-Segel Model

In this note, we propose a new relative entropy combination of the methods developed by P.--E. Jabin and Z.~Wang [Inventiones (2018)] and by S. Serfaty [Proc. Int. Cong. of Math, (2018) and references therein] to treat more general kernels in mean field limit theory. This new relative entropy may be understood as introducing appropriate weights in the relative entropy developed by P.-E. Jabin and Z. Wang (in the spirit of what has been recently developed by D.~Bresch and P.--E. Jabin [Annals of Maths (2018)]) to cancel the more singular terms involving the divergence of the flow. As an example, a full rigorous derivation (with quantitative estimates) of the Patlak-Keller-Segel model in some subcritical regimes is obtained. Our new relative entropy allows to treat singular potentials which combine large smooth part, small attractive singular part and large repulsive singular part.
