Homogenization of nonlocal wire metamaterial via a renormalization approach

It is well known that defining a local refractive index for a metamaterial requires that the wavelength be large with respect to the scale of its microscopic structure (generally the period). However, the converse does not hold. There are simple structures, such as the infinite, perfectly conducting wire medium, which remain non-local for arbitrarily large wavelength-to-period ratios. In this work we extend these results to the more realistic and relevant case of finite wire media with finite conductivity. In the quasi-static regime the metamaterial is described by a non-local permittivity which is obtained analytically using a two-scale renormalization approach. Its accuracy is tested and confirmed numerically via full vector 3D finite element calculations. Moreover, finite wire media exhibit large absorption with small reflection, while their low fill factor allows considerable freedom to control other characteristics of the metamaterial such as its mechanical, thermal or chemical robustness.

Leaky modes of a left-handed slab

Using complex plane analysis we show that left-handed slab may support either leaky slab waves, which are backward because of negative refraction, or leaky surface waves, which are backward or forward depending on the propagation direction of the surface wave itself. Moreover, there is a general connection between the reflection coefficient of the left-handed slab and the one of the corresponding right-handed slab (with opposite permittivity and permeability) so that leaky slab modes are excited for the same angle of incidence of the impinging beam for both structures. Many negative giant lateral shifts can be explained by the excitation of these leaky modes.

Mesoscopic magnetism in dielectric photonic crystal meta materials: topology and inhomogeneous broadening

We consider meta materials made from a two-dimensional dielectric rod-type photonic crystal. The magnetic response is studied within the recently developed homogenization theory and we in particular study the effects of topology and inhomogeneous broadening. While topology itself mainly affects the Mie resonance frequency we find that the dispersion in the topological radius R of the dielectric rods may lead to significant inhomogeneous broadening and suppression of the negative-mu phenomena for dR/R0 >> epsilon''/epsilon', with epsilon=epsilon'+i*epsilon'' being the relative dielectric function of the rods.

Theory of mesoscopic magnetism in meta-materials

We provide a rigorous theoretical basis for the artificial magnetic activity of meta-materials near resonances. Our approach is a renormalization-based scheme that authorises a completely general theory. The major result is an explicit expression of the effective permeability, in terms of resonant frequencies. The theoretical results are checked numerically and we give applications of our theory to Left-Handed Media and to the solution of the Pokrovski-Efros paradox.

Ultra-refraction phenomena in Bragg mirrors

We show numerically for the first time that ultra-refractive phenomena do exist in one-dimensional photonic crystals: we exhibit the main features of ultra-refraction, that is the enlargement and the splitting of an incident beam. We give a very simple explanation of these phenomena in terms of the photonic band structure of these media.

Poles and zeros of the scattering matrix associated to defect modes

We analyze electromagnetic waves propagation in one-dimensional periodic media with single or periodic defects. The study is made both from the point of view of the modes and of the diffraction problem. We provide an explicit dispersion equation for the numerical calculation of the modes, and we establish a connection between modes and poles and zeros of the scattering matrix.

Light propagation control by finite-size effects in photonic crystals

We exhibit the strong influence on light propagation of the finite size in photonic band-gap material. We show that light emission can be controlled by the symmetry group of the boundary of the finite device. These results lead simply to important practical applications.
