Stroboscopic stability of a Floquet chiral spin liquid beyond the folding frequency

We study the two-step Floquet dynamics of the chiral $J_1$-$J_2$-$K$ Heisenberg model on the $4\times4$ torus, alternating its non-chiral Heisenberg part $H_{AF}$ and its chiral plaquette part $H_K$, at a parameter point where the static model hosts a quasi-degenerate, spectrally isolated chiral-spin-liquid (CSL) topological doublet. The one-period propagator is computed exactly in all symmetry sectors. Decreasing the frequency, the doublet survives the drive far beyond the frequency $ω_{res}\simeq 11.5 J_1$ at which folded states first cross it in quasienergy: the time-averaged energy of the Floquet eigenstates, which orders the folded spectrum, shows that the doublet remains the isolated bottom of the spectrum down to $ω\simeq 6J_1$, while stroboscopic time evolution over thousands of periods shows no heating for $ω\gtrsimω_{res}$ and only slow absorption below. The quasienergy resonances of the folded regime are invisible in the average energy, identifying them as parametrically weak avoided crossings. We argue that this mechanism, stability controlled by local energy scales rather than by the extensive many-body bandwidth, is of the type expected to survive in the thermodynamic limit, where a prethermal Floquet CSL should persist for $ω$ above a threshold set by local scales, with heating times exponentially long in $ω/J_1$, a conjecture that larger clusters can now test. Consistently, the optimal $D=3$ chiral PEPS of the static problem still describes the driven doublet deep in the folded regime, with an essentially unchanged local tensor. Finally, we show that the drive is realizable on existing quantum simulators, via an explicit digital pulse sequence of XY-type two-spin gates on the four bond colours of the square lattice, with an infidelity of $1.5\times10^{-5}$ per period.

Investigation of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice: A study with projected entangled-pair states

The nature of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase in the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice remains an open and actively debated problem. In this work, we employ the infinite projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) to systematically investigate the model under different symmetry constraints. Our simulations reveal a direct transition from the $120^\circ$ Néel state to a putative QSL at $J_2/J_1\approx 0.08$, signaled by the collapse of magnetic order. We further show that, through either an appropriate unitary rotation or spontaneous spin long-range order, the stripe antiferromagnetic phase can also be accurately captured within the infinite PEPS framework. A central focus of our study is the role played by the PEPS symmetry in approximating the QSL ground-state sandwiched between the two magnetic phases. We first found that a fully-symmetric topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Resonating Valence Bond state, which can be written as a simple PEPS with bond dimension $D=3$, exhibits a reasonably good variational energy. Motivated by this finding, we have further constructed generic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric PEPS of larger bond dimension (up to $D=7$). We found that, under wavefunction optimization, spinons condense and, simultaneously, topological vison excitations get confined, hence precluding $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order. This strongly indicates the gapless (or critical) nature of the QSL phase, which is most naturally consistent with a U(1) Dirac spin liquid scenario.

Detuning the Floquet anomalous chiral spin liquid

At high-frequency a periodically-driven quantum spin-1/2 system can emulate a chiral spin liquid (CSL) described by an effective static local chiral Hamiltonian. In contrast, at low-frequency these settings realize "Swap" models exhibiting {\it anomalous} CSL phases, in which one-way spin transport occurs at the edge although the bulk time-evolution operator over one period is trivial. In this work we explicitly construct a family of Floquet quantum spin-1/2 models on the square lattice implementing Swap models to investigate the stability of the anomalous CSL under frequency detuning and the transition to the high-frequency regime. We used the average-energy spectrum on finite-size torus and cylinders to unfold the Floquet quasi-energy spectrum over the whole frequency range and obtain the geometrical Berry phases. This enabled us to identify three regimes upon increasing detuning: i) a finite-size regime (with no folding of the Floquet spectrum), ii) an intermediate (narrow) regime with folding and very few resonances and iii) a regime with an increased density of resonances suggesting heating. At small detuning, edge modes are revealed by spectroscopic tools and from the Streda response of the system giving access to the anomalous winding number. The analysis of all the data suggests that the anomalous CSL is not continuously connected to the high-frequency CSL. We also discuss the possible occurrence of a long-lived prethermal anomalous CSL.

Monopole excitations in the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid on the triangular lattice

The $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid might realize an exotic phase of matter whose low-energy properties are described by quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions, where gapless modes exists but spinons and gauge fields are strongly coupled. Its existence has been proposed in frustrated Heisenberg models in presence of frustrating super-exchange interactions, by the (Abrikosov) fermionic representation of the spin operators [X.-G. Wen, \href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.65.165113}{Phys. Rev. B {\bf 65}, 165113 (2002)}], supplemented by the Gutzwiller projection. Here, we construct charge-$Q$ monopole excitations in the Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with nearest- ($J_1$) and next-neighbor ($J_2$) couplings. In the highly frustrated regime, singlet and triplet monopoles with $Q=1$ become gapless in the thermodynamic limit; in addition, the energies for generic $Q$ agree with field-theoretical predictions, obtained for a large number of gapless fermion modes. Finally, we consider localized gauge excitations, in which magnetic $π$-fluxes are concentrated in the triangular plaquettes (in analogy with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ visons), showing that these kind of states do not play a relevant role at low energies. All our findings lend support to a stable $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid in the $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice.

Simulating Bulk Gap in Chiral Projected Entangled-Pair States

Projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) have proven effective in capturing chiral spin liquid ground states, yet the presence of long-range ``gossamer'' correlation tails raises concerns about their ability to accurately describe bulk gaps. Here, we address this challenge and demonstrate that PEPS can reliably characterize gapped bulk excitations in chiral topological phases. Using a variational principle for excited states within a local mode approximation, we establish that correlation functions decaying faster than $r^{-2}$ are not necessarily related to gapless modes and thus long-range ``gossamer'' correlation tails in chiral PEPS do not contradict the presence of a bulk gap. This framework is validated in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kitaev model with a chiral term, where PEPS yields excitation gaps that agree well with exact solutions. Extending our approach to the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Kitaev model, we present compelling evidence for its chiral ground state and accurately resolve its gapped excitations. These findings thus solidify PEPS as a powerful tool for studying both ground and excited states in chiral topological systems, thereby bridging a key gap in the understanding of their bulk properties.

Simulating chiral spin liquids with fermionic Projected Entangled Paired States

Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) based on spin-1/2 fermionic Projected Entangled Pair States (fPEPS) are considered on the square lattice. First, fPEPS approximants of Gutzwiller-projected Chern insulators (GPCI) are investigated by Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) techniques on finite size tori. We show that such fPEPS of finite bond dimension can correctly capture the topological properties of the chiral spin liquid, as the exact GPCI, with the correct topological ground state degeneracy on the torus. Further, more general fPEPS are considered and optimized (on the infinite plane) to describe the CSL phase of a chiral frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The chiral modes are computed on the edge of a semi-infinite cylinder (of finite circumference) and shown to follow the predictions from Conformal Field Theory. In contrast to their bosonic analogs the (optimized) fPEPS do not suffer from the replication of the chiral edge mode in the odd topological sector.

Gauge symmetry of excited states in projected entangled-pair state simulations

While gauge symmetry is a well-established requirement for representing topological orders in projected entangled-pair state (PEPS), its impact on the properties of low-lying excited states remains relatively unexplored. Here we perform PEPS simulations of low-energy dynamics in the Kitaev honeycomb model, which supports fractionalized gauge flux (vison) excitations. We identify gauge symmetry emerging upon optimizing an unbiased PEPS ground state. Using the PEPS adapted local mode approximation, we further classify the low-lying excited states by discerning different vison sectors. Our simulations of spin and spin-dimer dynamical correlations establish close connections with experimental observations. Notably, the selection rule imposed by the locally conserved visons results in nearly flat dispersions in momentum space for excited states belonging to the 2-vison or 4-vison sectors.

Floquet dynamical chiral spin liquid at finite frequency

Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) are quantum spin analogs of electronic Fractional Chern Insulators. Their realizations on ultracold-atom or Rydberg-atom platforms remain very challenging. Recently, a setup of time-periodic modulations of nearest-neighbor Heisenberg couplings applied on an initial genuine spin liquid state on the square lattice has been proposed to stabilize a (Abelian) $\mathbb{Z}_2$ CSL phase. In the high-frequency limit, it was shown that time evolution can be described in terms of a static effective chiral Hamiltonian. Here we revisit this proposal and consider drives at lower frequency in a regime where the high-frequency Magnus expansion fails. We show that a Dynamical CSL (DCSL) is nevertheless stabilized in a finite range of frequency. The topological nature of this dynamical phase, as well as its instability below a critical frequency, is connected to specific features of the Floquet pseudo-energy spectrum. We also show that the DCSL can be represented faithfully by a two-dimensional time-periodic tensor network and, as in the static case, topological order is associated to a tensor gauge symmetry ($\mathbb{Z}_2$ in that case).

1-Form Symmetric Projected Entangled-Pair States

The 1-form symmetry, manifesting as loop-like symmetries, has gained prominence in the study of quantum phases, deepening our understanding of symmetry. However, the role of 1-form symmetries in Projected Entangled-Pair States (PEPS), two-dimensional tensor network states, remains largely underexplored. We present a novel framework for understanding 1-form symmetries within tensor networks, specifically focusing on the derivation of algebraic relations for symmetry matrices on the PEPS virtual legs. Our results reveal that 1-form symmetries impose stringent constraints on tensor network representations, leading to distinct anomalous braiding phases carried by symmetry matrices. We demonstrate how these symmetries influence the ground state and tangent space in PEPS, providing new insights into their physical implications for enhancing ground state optimization efficiency and characterizing the 1-form symmetry structure in excited states.

Quantum state preparation of topological chiral spin liquids via Floquet engineering

In condensed matter, Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) are quantum spin analogs of electronic Fractional Quantum Hall states (in the continuum) or Fractional Chern Insulators (on the lattice). As the latter, CSL are remarquable states of matter, exhibiting topological order and chiral edge modes. Preparing CSL on quantum simulators like cold atom platforms is still an open challenge. Here we propose a simple setup on a finite cluster of spin-1/2 located at the sites of a square lattice. Using a Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) non-chiral spin liquid as initial state on which fast time-modulations of strong nearest-neighbor Heisenberg couplings are applied, following different protocols (out-of-equilibrium quench or semi-adiabatic ramping of the drive), we show the slow emergence of such a CSL phase. An effective Floquet dynamics, obtained from a high-frequency Magnus expansion of the drive Hamiltonian, provides a very accurate and simple framework fully capturing the out-of-equilibrium dynamics. An analysis of the resulting prepared states in term of Projected Entangled Pair states gives further insights on the topological nature of the chiral phase. Finally, we discuss possible applications to quantum computing.

Tensor network study of the spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ model: incommensurate spiral order, mixed valence-bond solids, and multicritical points

We use the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) method to investigate the global phase diagram of the spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model. The ground state phase diagram is established with a rich variety of phases: AFM, gapless quantum spin liquid, valence-bond solid (VBS), stripe, and incommensurate spiral phases. The nature of the VBS region is revealed, containing a plaquette VBS and a mixed columnar-plaquette VBS, with the emergence of short-range incommensurate spin correlations in some region. The long-range incommensurate magnetic phase is also explicitly characterized as a planar spiral with incommensurate spatial periodicities. Most interestingly, there exists several multicritical points connecting different phases. These findings elucidate the true nature of the long-standing square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnet at zero-temperature. Our results also pave the way to accurately simulate complex two-dimensional quantum systems that may host nonuniform features by means of finite PEPS.

Piercing the Dirac spin liquid: From a single monopole to chiral states

The parton approach for quantum spin liquids gives a transparent description of low-energy elementary excitations, e.g., spinons and emergent gauge-field fluctuations. The latter ones are directly coupled to the hopping/pairing of spinons. By using the fermionic representation of the $U(1)$ Dirac state on the kagome lattice and variational Monte Carlo techniques to include the Gutzwiller projection, we analyse the effect of modifying the gauge fields in the spinon kinematics. In particular, we construct low-energy monopole excitations, which are shown to be gapless in the thermodynamic limit. States with a finite number of monopoles or with a finite density of them are also considered, with different patterns of the gauge fluxes. We show that these chiral states are not stabilized in the Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor super-exchange couplings, and the Dirac state corresponds to the lowest-energy Ansatz within this family of variational wave functions. Our results support the idea that spinons with a gapless conical spectrum coexist with gapless monopole excitations, even for the spin-1/2 case.

Tensor network variational optimizations for real-time dynamics: application to the time-evolution of spin liquids

Within the Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) tensor network formalism, a simple update (SU) method has been used to investigate the time evolution of a two-dimensional U(1) critical spin-1/2 spin liquid under Hamiltonian quench [Phys. Rev. B 106, 195132 (2022)]. Here we introduce two different variational frameworks to describe the time dynamics of SU(2)-symmetric translationally-invariant PEPS, aiming to improve the accuracy. In one approach, after using a Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the time evolution operator in term of two-site elementary gates, one considers a single bond embedded in an environment approximated by a Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group (CTMRG). A variational update of the two tensors on the bond is performed under the application of the elementary gate and then, after symmetrization of the site tensors, the environment is updated. In the second approach, a cluster optimization is performed on a finite (periodic) cluster, maximizing the overlap of the exact time-evolved state with a symmetric finite-size PEPS ansatz. Observables are then computed on the infinite lattice contracting the infinite-PEPS (iPEPS) by CTMRG. We show that the variational schemes outperform the SU method and remain accurate over a significant time interval before hitting the entanglement barrier. Studying the spectrum of the transfer matrix, we find that the asymptotic correlations are very well preserved under time evolution, including the critical nature of the singlet correlations, as expected from the Lieb-Robinson (LR) bound theorem. Consistently, the system (asymptotic) boundary is found to bedescribed by the same Conformal Field Theory of central charge c = 1 during time evolution. We also compute the time-evolution of the short distance spin-spin correlations and estimate the LR velocity.

Phase diagram of the chiral SU(3) antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice

Motivated by the search for chiral spin liquids (CSL), we consider a simple model defined on the kagome lattice of interacting SU(3) spins (in the fundamental representation) including two-site and three-site permutations between nearest neighbor sites and on triangles, respectively. By combining analytical developments and various numerical techniques, namely exact Lanczos diagonalizations and tensor network variational approaches, we find a rich phase diagram with non-topological (``trivial") and topological (possibly chiral) gapped spin liquids (SLs). Trivial spin liquids include an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT)-like phase and a trimerized phase, the latter breaking the inversion center between the up and down triangles of the kagome lattice. A topological SL is stabilized in a restricted part of the phase diagram by the time-reversal symmetry breaking (complex) 3-site permutation term. Analyzing the chiral edge modes of this topological SL on long cylinders or on finite disks, we have come up with two competing scenarios, either a CSL or a double Chern-Simon SL characterized by a single or by two counter-propagating Wess-Zumino-Witten SU(3)$_1$ chiral mode(s), respectively. In the vicinity of the extended ferromagnetic region we have found a magnetic phase corresponding either to a modulated canted ferromagnet or to a uniform partially magnetized ferromagnet.

Chiral spin liquids with projected Gaussian fermionic entangled pair states

We study the parton construction of chiral spin liquids (CSLs) using projected Gaussian fermionic entangled pair states (GfPEPSs). First, we show that GfPEPSs can represent generic spinless Chern insulators faithfully with finite bond dimensions. Then, by applying the Gutzwiller projection to a bi-layer GfPEPSs, spin-1/2 Abelian and non-Abelian CSLs are obtained for Chern number $C=1$ and $C=2$, respectively. As a consequence of the topological obstruction for GfPEPSs, very weak Gossamer tails are observed in the correlation functions of the fermionic projected entangled pair state (PEPS) ansatze, suggesting that the no-go theorem for chiral PEPS is universal but does not bring any practical limitation. Remarkably, without fine tuning, all topological sectors can be constructed showing the expected number of chiral branches in the respective entanglement spectra, providing a sharp improvement with respect to the known bosonic PEPS approach.

Static and dynamical signatures of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and YCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{3}$, we consider the ${S=1/2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor super-exchange $J$ and (out-of-plane) Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction $J_D$, which favors (in-plane) ${\bf Q}=(0,0)$ magnetic order. By using both variational Monte Carlo (based upon Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions) and tensor-network approaches (built from infinite projected-entangled pair/simplex states), we show that the ground state develops a finite magnetization for $J_D/J \gtrsim 0.03 - 0.04$, while the gapless spin liquid remains stable for smaller values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The relatively small value of $J_D/J$ for which magnetic order sets in is particularly relevant for the interpretation of low-temperature behaviors of kagome antiferromagnets, including ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$. In addition, we assess the spin dynamical structure factors and the corresponding low-energy spectrum, by using the variational Monte Carlo technique. The existence of a continuum of excitations above the magnon modes is reported within the magnetically ordered phase, similarly to what has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering on Cs$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$SnF$_{12}$.

Chiral spin liquids on the kagome lattice with projected entangled simplex states

The infinite projected entangled simplex state (iPESS), a type of tensor network (TN) state, has been used successfully for simulating and characterizing {\it non-chiral} spin liquids on the kagome lattice. Here, we demonstrate that iPESS also provides a faithful representation of a {\it chiral} spin liquid (CSL) on the same lattice, namely the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a scalar chirality. By classifying local tensors according to SU$(2)$ and point group symmetries, we construct a chiral ansatz breaking reflection $P$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries while preserving $PT$. The variational TN states are shown to host, for bond dimension $D\ge 8$, a chiral gapless entanglement spectrum following SU$(2)_1$ conformal field theory. The correlation function shows a small weight long-range tail complying with the prediction of the TN bulk-edge correspondence. %{\color{red}With more constraints included, the chiral ansatz is reduced to a non-chiral one which preserves full point group symmetries due to an emergent {\it tensor conservation law} and is of relevance to the ground state at the Heisenberg point. Lastly, by simulations in the complete ansatz family we discuss the transition from the non-chiral spin liquid to the CSL induced by the scalar chirality term.} We identify a non-chiral manifold spanned by only a subset of symmetric tensors where a new emergent {\it tensor conservation law} is realized. This allows us to both probe the stability of the non-chiral spin liquid and discuss its transition to CSL induced by a scalar chirality term.

Simulating chiral spin liquids with projected entangled-pair states

Doubts have been raised on the representation of chiral spin liquids exhibiting topological order in terms of projected entangled pair states (PEPSs). Here, starting from a simple spin-1/2 chiral frustrated Heisenberg model, we show that a faithful representation of the chiral spin liquid phase is in fact possible in terms of a generic PEPS upon variational optimization. We find a perfectly chiral gapless edge mode and a rapid decay of correlation functions at short distances consistent with a bulk gap, concomitant with a gossamer long-range tail originating from a PEPS bulk-edge correspondence. For increasing bond dimension, (i) the rapid decrease of spurious features -- SU(2) symmetry breaking and long-range tails in correlations -- together with (ii) a faster convergence of the ground state energy as compared to state-of-the-art cylinder matrix-product state simulations involving far more variational parameters, prove the fundamental relevance of the PEPS ansatz for simulating systems with chiral topological order.
