Low-frequency current fluctuations in doped ladders

Charge current static and dynamical correlations are computed by exact diagonalisation methods on a 2-leg t-t'-J ladder which exhibits a sharp transition between a Luther-Emery (LE) phase of hole pairs and a phase with deconfined holes. In the LE phase, we find short-range low-energy incommensurate current fluctuations which are intrinsically connected to the internal charge dynamics within one hole pair. On the contrary, when holes unbind, the maximum of the current susceptibility moves abruptly to the commensurate wavevector $π$ and strongly increases for decreasing doping suggesting an instability towards a staggered flux state at sufficiently small doping.

Influence of the anion potential on the charge ordering in quasi-one dimensional charge transfer salts

We examine the various instabilities of quarter-filled strongly correlated electronic chains in the presence of a coupling to the underlying lattice. To mimic the physics of the (TMTTF)$_2$X Bechgaard-Fabre salts we also include electrostatic effects of intercalated anions. We show that small displacements of the anion can stabilize new mixed Charged Density Wave-Bond Order Wave phases in which central symmetry centers are suppressed. This finding is discussed in the context of recent experiments. We suggest that the recently observed charge ordering is due to a cooperative effect between the Coulomb interaction and the coupling of the electronic stacks to the anions. On the other hand, the Spin-Peierls instability at lower temperature requires a Peierls-like lattice coupling.

Fractionnally charged excitations in the charge density wave state of a quarter-filled t-J chain with quantum phonons

Elementary excitations of the 4k$_F$ charge density wave state of a quarter-filled strongly correlated electronic one-dimensional chain are investigated in the presence of dispersionless quantum optical phonons using Density Matrix Renormalization Group techniques. Such excitations are shown to be topological unbound solitons carrying charge $e/2$. Relevance to the 4k$_F$ charge density wave instability in $\rm (DI-DCNQI)_2Ag$ or recently discovered in (TMTTF)$_2$X (X=PF$_6$, AsF$_6$) is discussed.

Coexistence of charge density waves, bond order waves and spin density waves in quasi-one dimensional charge transfer salts

Charge, spin, as well as lattice instabilities are investigated in isolated or weakly coupled chains of correlated electrons at quarter-filling. Our analysis is based on extended Hubbard models including nearest neighbor repulsion and Peierls coupling to lattice degrees of freedom. While treating the electronic quantum fluctuations exactly, the lattice structure is optimized self-consistently. We show that, generically, isolated chains undergo instabilities towards coexisting charge density waves (CDW) and bond order waves (BOW) insulating spin-gapped phases. The spin and charge gaps of the BOW-CDW phase are computed. In the presence of an interchain magnetic coupling spin density waves phases including a CDW or a BOW component are also found. Our results are discussed in the context of insulating charge transfer salts.

Effects of Long Range Electronic Interactions on a One-dimensional Electron System

The effects of a long range electronic potential on a one dimensional chain of spinless fermions are investigated by numerical techniques (Exact Diagonalisation of rings with up to 30 sites complemented by finite size analysis) and analytic calculations. Due to a competition between the $2 k_F$ oscillations in the density and the (very slow) log divergence of the long wavelength part of the Coulomb potential, the metallic character of the system is enhanced at intermediate (and up to quite large) lengthscales. Despite some similarities, we found that this quasi-metallic regime is not of the Luttinger Liquid type, as evidenced by strong deviations from predictions of conformal field theory and in agreement with the picture of a (very weakly pinned) Wigner crystal. When the strength of the Coulomb interaction is substancially increased, we observe a smooth cross-over to a strongly localized charge density wave.

Dynamical properties of low dimensional CuGeO3 and NaV2O5 systems

Properties of low-dimensional spin-Peierls systems are described by using a one dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain linearly coupled to a single phonon mode of wave vector pi (whose contribution is expected to be dominant). By exact diagonalizations of small rings with up to 24 sites supplemented by a finite size scaling analysis, static and dynamical properties are investigated. Numerical evidences are given for a spontaneous discrete symmetry breaking towards a spin gapped phase with a frozen lattice dimerization. Special emphasis is put on the comparative study of the two inorganic spin-Peierls compounds CuGeO3 and NaV2O5 and the model parameters are determined from a fit of the experimental spin gaps. We predict that the spin-phonon coupling is 2 or 3 times larger in NaV2O5 than in CuGeO3. Inelastic neutron scattering spectra are calculated and similar results are found in the single phonon mode approximation and in the model including a static dimerization. In particular, the magnon S=1 branch is clearly separated from the continuum of triplet excitations by a finite gap.

Integrability and coherence of hopping between 1D correlated electron systems (Reply Comment)

The main point of Clarke and Strong's comment, namely that our results concerning the effect of integrability on the hopping of electrons between chains are probably not related to the notion of coherence proposed in \cite{clarke}, is important and well taken. In fact, we have already stressed in our work that integrability affects the intermediate-time behaviour but not the short-time one, while in \cite{clarke} the authors make predictions about the long-time dynamics on the basis of a calculation at short times. The logical conclusion is then that these two effects are in fact different phenomena. In more recent papers we have numerically investigated other physical quantities (spectral function, transverse conductivity in relation to the notion of coherence developed in \cite{clarke}.

On the presence of mid-gap states in CaV4O9

Using exact diagonalizations of finite clusters with up to 32 sites, we study the $J_1-J_2$ model on the 1/5 depleted square lattice. Spin-spin correlation functions are consistent with plaquette order in the spin gap phase which exists for intermediate values of $J_2/J_1$. Besides, we show that singlet states will be present in the singlet-triplet gap if $J_2/J_1$ is not too small ($J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.47$). We argue that this property should play a central role in determining the exchange integrals in ${\rm CaV}_4{\rm O}_9$

Persistent currents in interacting electronic systems

Persistent currents in disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are calculated using exact diagonalization methods in the one-dimensional (1D) case and self-consistent Hartree-Fock treatments for two dimensional (2D) systems. For multichannel systems, a comparative study between models of spinless or spinfull (Hubbard) fermions has been done. First, it is shown that a purely one-dimensional model can not reproduce the correct order of magnitude of the observed currents. For 2D systems, going beyond first order pertubative calculations, we show that the second harmonic of the current is {\it strongly suppressed} in the case of spinless fermion models but {\it significantly enhanced} for the Hubbard model. This reduction (resp. increase) of the second harmonic is related to a strong increase (resp. reduction) of the spacial charge density fluctuations. Our work underlines the important role of the spin degrees of freedom in the persistent currents.

Persistent Currents in Interacting Systems: Role of the Spin

Persistent currents flowing through disordered mesoscopic rings threaded by a magnetic flux are investigated. Models of fermions with on-site interactions (Hubbard model) or models of spinless fermions with nearest neighbor interactions are considered on 2D cylinders with twisted boundary conditions in one direction to account for a magnetic flux. Self-consistent Hartree-Fock methods are used to treat the electron-electron interaction beyond first order. We show that the second harmonic of the current (which is relevant in the diffusive regime) is {\it strongly suppressed} by the interaction in the case of spinless fermions while it is {\it significantly enhanced} in the Hubbard model. Our data also strongly suggest that the reduction (increase) of this harmonic is related to a strong increase (reduction) of the spacial fluctuations of the charge density.

Integrability and coherence of hopping between 1D correlated electrons systems

We present numerical evidence that the hopping of electrons between chains described by the $t-J$ model is coherent in the integrable cases ($J=0$ and $J=2$) and essentially incoherent otherwise. This effect is {\it not} related to the value of the exponent $α$, (which is restricted to the interval [0,1/8] when $0\le J\le 2$), and we propose that enhanced coherence is characteristic of integrable systems.

Exact diagonalisation studies of strongly correlated 2D lattice fermions

The T=0 phase diagram of the planar t--J model with small doping is investigated by exact diagonalisations of square clusters with up to 32 sites. At half-filling, the single hole quasi-particule weight vanishes in the strong correlation limit $J\rightarrow 0$ while the quasi-particle mass diverges (like 1/J). However, the spectral function shows weight distributed over a large energy range ($\sim 7\, t$) and a pronounced structure in momentum space which supports the composite particle picture of the hole. For $J/t>J/t|_{B,2}$ the effective attractive force between holes leads to bound-pairs formation. The hole-hole and hole pair-hole pair binding energies calculated on the $\sqrt{26}\times\sqrt{26}$ cluster indicates that in the range $J/t\in [0.16,0.45]$ a phase of separate pairs of d-wave internal symmetry is stable. On the other hand, the d-wave pair spectral function exhibits a quasi-particle peak down to very small J/t ratios suggesting that $J/t|_{B,2}$ could in fact be as small as 0.05. Above $J/t|_{B,4}\sim 0.45$ the 2-holes pairs bind into 4-holes pairs. An abrupt change of the orbital symmetry of the 4-hole droplet is also observed above $J/t\sim 2.7$. In the parameter range, $J/t|_{B,2} < J/t < J/t|_{B,4}$, Bose condensation of the individual pairs is expected to lead to d-wave superconductivity.

Poisson versus GOE statistics in integrable and non-integrable quantum hamiltonian

We calculate the level statistics by finding the eigenvalue spectrum for a variety of one-dimensional many-body models, namely the Heisenberg chain, the t-J model and the Hubbard model. In each case the generic behaviour is GOE, however at points corresponding to models known to be exactly integrable Poisson statistics are found, in agreement with an argument we outline.

Dynamical Properties of a Single Hole in an Antiferromagnet

A finite size scaling analysis of the spectral function and of the optical conductivity of a single hole moving in an antiferromagnetic background is performed. It is shown that both the low energy quasiparticle peak and the broad higher energy structure are robust with increasing cluster size from $4\times 4$ to $\sqrt{26}\times\sqrt{26}$ sites. In the abscence of spin fluctuations, for most static or dynamical quantities saturation occurs when the size exceeds a characteristic size $N_c(J_z)$. Typically, 16 and 26 site clusters give reliable results for $J_z>0.75$ and $J_z>0.3$ respectively. The hole optical mass is shown to be very large ($>20$) in agreement with the small bandwidth. Due to the energy gap to flip a spin in the vicinity of a hole, a small gap $\propto J_z$ separates the low energy delta-function from the rest of the spectrum in the dynamical correlation functions. On the other hand, with $J_\perp$ this gap seems to disappear with increasing system size as one would expect since the spin waves are gapless in the thermodynamic limit. The large momentum dependence of the quasiparticle weight in the isotropic case is inconsistent with a string picture but agrees well with the self-consistent Born approximation. An accurate estimation of the higher energy part of the spectral functions of the t--J model can be made for momenta close to $(0,0)$ or $(π,π)$;
