Tachyonic Encore: A universal shift of inflationary observables

We propose a generic, largely inflaton-potential-independent mechanism in which a light axion spectator, initialized near the hilltop of its potential, reshapes inflationary observables through purely gravitational multi-field dynamics. During inflation the axion is frozen and the background follows an effectively single-field trajectory. After inflation ends, the axion rolls, inducing a turn in field space and transient tachyonic phases of the isocurvature mode. The resulting ``tachyonic encore'' occurs entirely on super-horizon scales. These phases generate a nearly scale-invariant enhancement of the curvature power spectrum, suppressing the tensor-to-scalar ratio and shifting the scalar tilt to a weighted combination of adiabatic and entropic tilts at horizon crossing. We show that these effects can reconcile otherwise disfavored inflaton potentials with current CMB constraints. The same dynamics predict local non-Gaussianity, $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc.}\sim \mathcal{O}(1)$, within reach of upcoming surveys.

Universal Non-Gaussian Signatures from Transient Instabilities

We identify universal signatures in the bispectrum arising from a transient tachyonic instability of entropic fluctuations during inflation, a phenomenon that naturally arises in hyperbolic field-space geometries. We perform exact numerical calculations directly at the level of fluctuations, without relying on a specific background model, and distinguish two cases. In the light case, with masses around the Hubble scale, our results provide the first-ever computation of the bispectrum due to such tachyonic instabilities. We find a universal magnification of the folded configuration, together with the known non-analytic scaling in the squeezed limit. As an illustrative example, we compute and analyse the bispectrum in angular inflation, demonstrating compatibility with current limits. In the heavy case, with masses well above the Hubble scale, the bispectrum exhibits a distinctive correlation between magnified folded configurations and a `tachyonic resonance' in mildly squeezed limits, with the resonance scale set by the strength of the instability. While the main qualitative features are reproduced, we show that there exists no UV matching for which a single-field effective description, obtained by integrating out the entropic modes, accurately captures the bispectrum for all kinematic configurations. To facilitate observational applications, we introduce simple bispectrum shape templates suitable for current and forthcoming cosmological surveys. Our model-independent results allow for constraining non-standard inflationary attractors characterised by strongly non-geodesic motion.

Hidden Zeros in Exceptional Field Theories from Double Copy

It was recently discovered by Arkani-Hamed et al and Cao et al that the colour-ordered scattering amplitudes of Tr$(Φ^3)$, the non-linear sigma model and Yang-Mills-scalar vanish at specific loci. We build on this observation and demonstrate that, beyond colour ordering, scattering amplitudes can display higher-order hidden zeros. A first example are the flavour-paired amplitudes of gravity-coupled scalars, as a double copy of Yang-Mills-scalar. The other two cases are Dirac-Born-Infeld and the special Galileon, which are the natural generalisations of the non-linear sigma model with higher orders of the Adler zero. We demonstrate that the amplitudes of these theories all factorize into lower-point objects in the near-zero limit, and discuss their interpretation. Finally, we comment on the general picture of hidden zeros and prove their relation under the double copy.

Diagrammatic Derivation of Hidden Zeros and Exact Factorisation of Pion Scattering Amplitudes

Pion scattering amplitudes were recently found to vanish on specific kinematic loci, and to factorise close to these loci into a product of two lower-point amplitudes of an extended theory. We propose a diagrammatic representation of pion amplitudes that makes their vanishing on the loci manifest diagram by diagram. Moreover, we provide evidence that there is a closed-form expression for the amplitudes that generalises the near-zero factorisation in an exact manner, not only close to the loci but for all kinematic configurations. Our approach crucially relies on a novel formulation of the effective field theory of pions, in which tree-level scattering amplitudes are extracted from classical field equations for a set of covariantly conserved currents and emergent composite gauge fields.

Geometric duality between effective field theories I: scattering amplitudes

We propose a novel type of duality that connects a sequence of well-known theories with even-multiplicity scalar amplitudes: it relates the Yang-Mills theory coupled to a specific scalar matter sector to the nonlinear sigma model on a symmetric coset space, the (multiflavor) Dirac-Born-Infeld theory, and the special Galileon theory. The duality is manifested with the help of a covariant formulation of the classical equations of motion that features a contact quartic scalar self-coupling combined with propagation on a dynamical background of elementary or composite gauge fields. This is augmented with a set of constitutive relations that reflect the intrinsic or extrinsic geometry of the target space of the theory. The universality of the underlying geometric structure allows for an unambiguous mapping between different theories.

ACT, SPT, and chaotic inflation

We show that the simplest generalization of the chaotic inflation model $\tfrac12 {m^{2}ϕ^{2}}$ with nonminimal coupling to gravity $(1+ϕ) R$ provides a good match to the results of the latest data release of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, with $r \approx10^{-2}$.

Post-inflationary enhancement of adiabatic perturbations in modular cosmology

We show that multi-field inflationary models with negligible turning in field space during inflation can lead to an effective sourcing of adiabatic from entropic perturbations {\it after} the end of inflation. We illustrate this general phenomenon with a detailed analysis of an inflationary model whose scalar potential is determined by modular invariance. Its entropic perturbations are frozen during inflation, but instead, they are converted into adiabatic perturbations in the first post-inflationary $e$-folds. The curvature power spectrum, giving rise to CMB fluctuations, reaches a novel and enhanced plateau in this process; we address the implications for the inflationary observables $A_{s}$, $n_{s}$ and $r$.

Axion Stabilization in Modular Cosmology

The $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ invariant $α$-attractor models have plateau potentials with respect to the inflaton and axion fields. The potential in the axion direction is almost exactly flat during inflation, hence, the axion field remains nearly massless. In this paper, we develop a generalized class of such models, where the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ symmetry is preserved, but the axion acquires a large mass and becomes strongly stabilized during inflation, which eliminates isocurvature perturbations in this scenario. Inflation in such two-field models occurs as in the single-field $α$-attractors and leads to the same cosmological predictions.

Kinetic Gauge Friction in Natural Inflation

We study an extension of the natural inflation model comprising a non-Abelian gauge sector coupled to the axion-inflaton kinetic term. We show how such non-minimal coupling serves as a source of friction for the rolling inflaton granting sixty or more $e$-folds of accelerated expansion for sub-Planckian values of the axion decay constant. The analysis of perturbations reveals a negative sound speed, thus signaling an instability. Implementing a Chern-Simons-type coupling between the inflaton and gauge sectors cures the instability by delivering a positive speed. We perform a numerical study of scalar and tensor perturbations for a fiducial set of parameters finding that the corresponding observables are compatible with current CMB bounds.

Extremal Black Holes as Relativistic Systems with Kepler Dynamics

The recent detection of gravitational waves emanating from inspiralling black hole binaries has triggered a renewed interest in the dynamics of relativistic two-body systems. The conservative part of the latter are given by Hamiltonian systems obtained from so called post-Newtonian expansions of the general relativistic description of black hole binaries. In this paper we study the general question of whether there exist relativistic binaries that display Kepler-like dynamics with elliptical orbits. We show that an orbital equivalence to the Kepler problem indeed exists for relativistic systems with a Hamiltonian of a Kepler-like form. This form is realised by extremal black holes with electric charge and scalar hair to at least first order in the post-Newtonian expansion for arbitrary mass ratios and to all orders in the post-Newtonian expansion in the test-mass limit of the binary. Moreover, to fifth post-Newtonian order, we show that Hamiltonians of the Kepler-like form can be related explicitly through a canonical transformation and time reparametrization to the Kepler problem, and that all Hamiltonians conserving a Laplace-Runge-Lenz-like vector are related in this way to Kepler.

Bertranďs Theorem and the Double Copy of Relativistic Field Theories

Which relativistic field theories give rise to Kepler dynamics in the two-body problem? We consider a class of Hamiltonians that is the unique relativistic extension of the Kepler problem preserving its so(4) algebra, and have orbits related through time reparametrisation to orbits of the original Kepler problem. For three explicit examples, we give a natural interpretation in terms of spin-0,-1 and -2 interacting field theories in 5D. These are organically connected via the classical double copy, which therefore preserves maximal superintegrability.

Hybrid Goldstone Modes from the Double Copy Bootstrap

We perform a systematic classification of scalar field theories whose amplitudes admit a double copy formulation and identify two building blocks at 4-point and 13 at 5-point. Using the 4-point blocks as bootstrap seeds, this naturally leads to a single copy theory that is a gauged NLSM. Moreover, its double copy includes a novel theory that can be written in terms of Lovelock invariants of an induced metric, and includes Dirac-Born-Infeld and the special Galileon in specific limits. The amplitudes of these Goldstone modes have two distinct soft behaviour regimes, corresponding to a hybrid of non-linear symmetries.

Non-linear Electrodynamics from Massive Gravity

As a counterpart to the four-fermion interaction, which describes massive vector exchange at low energies, we investigate the low energy effective action of photons under exchange of a massive graviton. We show how integrating out a massive graviton leads to the most general duality-invariant vector interactions in 4D or, vice versa, how any such interactions have a natural interpretation within massive gravity. Moreover, we demonstrate how the special case of Born-Infeld theory arises from arguably the simplest graviton potential within ghost-free dRGT massive gravity.

Chaotic light scattering around extremal black holes

We show that the scattering of light in the field of $N\geq 3$ static extremal black holes is chaotic in the planar case. The relativistic dynamics of such extremal objects reduce to that of a classical Hamiltonian system. Certain values of the dilaton coupling then allow one to apply techniques from symbolic dynamics and classical potential scattering. This results in a lower bound on the topological entropy of order $\log(N-1)$, thus proving the emergence of chaotic scattering for $N \geq 3$ black holes.

Flavour-kinematics duality for Goldstone modes

Three scalar effective field theories have special properties in terms of non-linear symmetries, soft limits and on-shell constructability that arise from their Goldstone nature: the non-linear $σ$-model, multi-DBI theory and the special Galileon. We discuss how these theories are related via flavour-kinematics duality, analogous to the colour-kinematics duality between gravity and gauge theories. At the off-shell level, we identify a specific mapping between the three theories that is crucially dependent on their non-linear symmetries. Similarly, we demonstrate how the on-shell amplitudes factorise into BCJ numerators describing flavour and a scalar version of kinematics, naturally leading to the inclusion of graviton exchange in the $SO(M,N)$ non-linear $σ$-model. Finally, we map those numerators onto each other, and comment on a similar relation to tensor kinematics. Our results highlight a common structure that underlies the physics of different Goldstone modes.

Exceptional scalar theories in de Sitter space

The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. We study aspects of the curved space versions of these theories: for the special galileon, we find a new compact expression for its Lagrangian in de Sitter space and a field redefinition that relates it to the previous, more complicated formulation. This field redefinition reduces to the well-studied galileon duality redefinition in the flat space limit. For the DBI theory in de Sitter space, we discuss the brane and dilaton formulations of the theory and present strong evidence that these are related by a field redefinition. We also give an interpretation of the symmetries of these theories in terms of broken diffeomorphisms of de Sitter space.

Angular inflation in multi-field $α$-attractors

We explore the dynamics of multi-field models of inflation in which the field-space metric is a hyperbolic manifold of constant curvature. Such models are known as $α$-attractors and their single-field regimes have been extensively studied in the context of inflation and supergravity. We find a variety of multi-field inflationary trajectories in different regions of parameter space, which is spanned by the mass parameters and the hyperbolic curvature. Amongst these is a novel dynamical attractor along the boundary of the Poincare disc which we dub "angular inflation". We calculate the evolution of adiabatic and isocurvature fluctuations during this regime and show that, while isocurvature modes decay during this phase, the duration of the angular inflation period can shift the single-field predictions of $α$-attractors. For highly curved field-space manifolds, this can lead to predictions that lie outside the current observational bounds.

The Special Galileon as Goldstone of Diffeomorphisms

The special Galileon stands out amongst scalar field theories due to its soft limits, non-linear symmetries and scattering amplitudes. This prompts the question what the origin of its underlying symmetry is. We show that it is intimately connected to general relativity: the special Galileon is the Goldstone mode of the affine group, consisting of linear coordinate transformations, analogous to the dilaton for conformal symmetries. We construct the corresponding metric, and discuss various relations to gravity, Yang-Mills and the non-linear sigma-model.
