Rigidity results for Euler flows in two dimensional exterior domains

We study steady solutions of the two dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the exterior of a compact domain. We assume that fluid enters the exterior domain through every point of the obstacle boundary. Under suitable assumptions on the direction and decay of the velocity at infinity, we prove that the flow is irrotational if and only if the velocity has no stagnation points.

Finite time singularity formation for a nonlocal Boussinesq system arising in cold-plasma dynamics

We study finite-time singularity formation for a nonlocal Boussinesq system arising in cold-plasma dynamics. We show that smooth, symmetric initial data with strictly positive total density and a sufficiently negative velocity slope at the origin lead to finite-time blow-up. More precisely, we give an explicit upper bound for the lifespan and show that the velocity gradient becomes unbounded.

A fluid-solid interaction problem in porous media

In this work, we derive asymptotic interface models for an elastic Muskat free boundary problem describing Darcy flow beneath an elastic membrane. In a weakly nonlinear regime of small interface steepness, we obtain nonlocal evolution equations that capture the free-boundary dynamics up to quadratic order. In the long-wave thin-film regime, we rewrite the kinematic condition in flux form, flatten the moving domain, and derive a lubrication-type equation. Moreover, we establish well-posedness for these models in suitable Wiener spaces.

Pseudo-differential noise and nonlocal singularity formation in the stochastic Córdoba--Córdoba--Fontelos equation

We study the stochastic Córdoba--Córdoba--Fontelos equation driven by multiplicative Stratonovich noise. The noise amplitude is allowed to be a pseudo-differential operator whose leading part is nearly skew-adjoint. This class contains classical transport noise and also permits genuinely nonlocal perturbations. We first develop a local-in-time theory for maximal classical solutions in Sobolev spaces, proving existence, uniqueness, and a blow-up criterion. We then consider the special case of Stratonovich transport. For sufficiently large initial nonlocal steepness at a global maximum, we prove finite-time blow-up with arbitrarily high prescribed probability and obtain an explicit upper bound on the lifespan. Finally, on the event that the nonlocal steepness at the transported maximum diverges, we establish a conditional Type-I upper bound. When the terminal Cesàro average of the normalised nonlocal energy converges, we further identify the exact leading-order blow-up rate in terms of its limiting value.

Damping-Diffusion-Noise Interactions in the Stochastic Camassa-Holm Equation

In this paper we investigate the effects of the interaction between time-inhomogeneous damping, non-local diffusion, and noise on classical solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation incorporating these features. First, a local-in-time theory is established, covering the existence, uniqueness, and a blow-up criterion under relatively general conditions for these interacting mechanisms. Subsequently, we identify different conditions on the interactions between damping, diffusion, and noise that guarantee the global regularity and long-time behaviour of classical solutions. Notably, we demonstrate the existence of an evolution system of measures, which generalizes the concept of invariant measures to the time-inhomogeneous setting.

Derivation and well-posedness for asymptotic models of cold plasmas

In this paper we derive three new asymptotic models for an hyperbolic-hyperbolicelliptic system of PDEs describing the motion of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. The first of these models takes the form of a non-linear and non-local Boussinesq system (for the ionic density and velocity) while the second is a non-local wave equation (for the ionic density). Moreover, we derive a unidirectional asymptotic model of the later which is closely related to the well-known Fornberg-Whitham equation. We also provide the well-posedness of these asymptotic models in Sobolev spaces. To conclude, we demonstrate the existence of a class of initial data which exhibit wave breaking for the unidirectional model.

Asymptotic models for viscoelastic one-dimensional blood flow

We derive a unidirectional asymptotic model for one-dimensional blood flow in viscoelastic arteries. We prove local well-posedness of strong solutions in Sobolev spaces for general parameters and mean-zero periodic data. In the purely elastic BBM regime we further establish global existence and exponential decay for sufficiently small initial data. We also present a numerical study of the reduced model, including comparisons across different viscoelastic and amplitude regimes, and discuss the observed dynamics in connection with the continuation criterion.

Weakly nonlinear models for hydroelastic water waves

In this work, we derive reduced interface models for hydroelastic water waves coupled to a nonlinear viscoelastic plate. In a weakly nonlinear small-steepness regime we obtain bidirectional nonlocal evolution equations capturing the interface dynamics up to quadratic order, and we also derive two unidirectional models describing one-way propagation while retaining the leading dispersive and dissipative effects induced by the plate. Remarkably, one of the bidirectional model has a doubly nonlinear structure in the sense that there there is a nonlinear elliptic operator acting on the acceleration of the interface. We prove local well-posedness for the bidirectional model for small data via a two-parameter regularization and nested fixed points. For the unidirectional models, we obtain local well-posedness for arbitrary data and global well-posedness for small data.

Asymptotic models for the evolution of a circular biofilm

We study a class of lubrication-type equations modeling the spread of thin poroelastic biofilms at air/agar interfaces. Starting from a biofilm slab model, we perform a formal multi-scale asymptotic expansion to derive a reduced nonlinear evolution equation with time-dependent coefficients. First, we establish a local-in-time existence result as well as a continuation criteria. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the radius of the biofilm, we show the existence of global in time solutions. We conclude with some numerical simulations illustrating the emergence of instabilities and potential singularities in finite time.

On two systems of Burgers type arising in nonlinear wave interaction

In this note we study the well-posedness of two systems of Burgers type arising in nonlinear wave interactions. The first model describes the interaction of a Burger's bore with the classical Korteweg-de Vries equation while the second exemplify the interaction of weak sound waves and entropy waves with small amplitudes. For the former, we show the local existence and uniqueness of solutions in Sobolev spaces and Wiener-type spaces. For the latter, we provide an elementary proof of finite time singularity.

On the existence of traveling wave solutions for cold plasmas

The present paper is concerned with the existence of traveling wave solutions of the asymptotic model, derived by the authors in a previous work, to approximate the unidirectional evolution of a collision-free plasma in a magnetic field. First, using bifurcation theory, we can rigorously prove the existence of periodic traveling waves of small amplitude. Furthermore, our analysis also evidences the existence of different type of traveling waves. To this end, we present a second approach based on the analysis of the differential system satisfied by the traveling-wave profiles, the existence of equilibria, and the identification of associated homo-clinic and periodic orbits around them. The study makes use of linearization techniques and numerical computations to show the existence of different types of traveling-wave solutions, with monotone and non-monotone behaviour and different regularity, as well as periodic traveling waves.

The three dimensional magneto-hydrostatic equations with Grad-Rubin boundary value

In this work, we study the well-posedness of the three dimensional magneto-hydrostatic equation under Grad-Rubin boundary value conditions. The proof relies on a fixed point argument to construct solutions to an elliptic-hyperbolic problem in a perturbative regime by means of pseudo-differential operators with symbols with limited regularity in Hölder spaces. As a byproduct, the employed technique in this work is more flexible and simplifies the arguments of the proof for the previous two-dimensional setting.

Well-posedness and decay for a nonlinear propagation wave model in atmospheric flows

In this note, we provide two results concerning the global well-posedness and decay of solutions to an asymptotic model describing the nonlinear wave propagation in the troposphere, namely, the morning glory phenomenon. The proof of the first result combines a pointwise estimate together with some interpolation inequalities to close the energy estimates in Sobolev spaces. The second proof relies on suitable Wiener-like functional spaces.

Rotating solutions to the incompressible Euler-Poisson equation with external particle

We consider a two-dimensional, incompressible fluid body, together with self-induced interactions. The body is perturbed by an external particle with small mass. The whole configuration rotates uniformly around the common center of mass. We construct solutions, which are stationary in a rotating coordinate system, using perturbative methods. In addition, we consider a large class of internal motions of the fluid. The angular velocity is related to the position of the external particle and is chosen to satisfy a non-resonance condition.

The Burgers' equation with stochastic transport: shock formation, local and global existence of smooth solutions

In this work, we examine the solution properties of the Burgers' equation with stochastic transport. First, we prove results on the formation of shocks in the stochastic equation and then obtain a stochastic Rankine-Hugoniot condition that the shocks satisfy. Next, we establish the local existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions in the inviscid case and construct a blow-up criterion. Finally, in the viscous case, we prove global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions.

On the blow up of a non-local transport equation in compact manifolds

In this note we show finite time blow-up for a class of non-local active scalar equations on compact Riemannian manifolds. The strategy we follow was introduced by Silvestre and Vicol to deal with the one dimensional Córdoba-Córdoba-Fontelos equation and might be regarded as an instance of De Giorgi's method.
