Ultra Narrow Linewidth Frequency Reference via Measurement and Feedback

The generation of very narrow linewidth light sources is of great importance in modern science. One such source is the superradiant laser, which relies on collectively interacting ultra long lived dipoles driven by incoherent light. Here we discuss a different way of generating spectrally pure light by coherently driving such dipoles inside an optical QED cavity. The light exiting the cavity carries information about the detuning between the driving light and the atomic transition, but is also affected by the noise originating from all the decoherence processes that act on the combined atom-cavity system. We calculate these effects to obtain fundamental limits for frequency estimation and stabilization across a range of values of input light intensities and atom-light interaction strengths, estimate these limits in state-of-the-art cavity experiments with alkaline-earth atoms and identify favorable operating conditions. We find that the achievable linewidths are comparable to those of the superradiant laser.

Photon-mediated correlated hopping in a synthetic ladder

We propose a new direction in quantum simulation that uses multilevel atoms in an optical cavity as a toolbox to engineer new types of bosonic models featuring correlated hopping processes in a synthetic ladder spanned by atomic ground states. The underlying mechanisms responsible for correlated hopping are collective cavity-mediated interactions that dress a manifold of excited levels in the far detuned limit. By weakly coupling the ground state levels to these dressed states using two laser drives with appropriate detunings, one can engineer correlated hopping processes while suppressing undesired single-particle and collective shifts of the ground state levels. We discuss the rich many-body dynamics that can be realized in the synthetic ladder including pair production processes, chiral transport and light-cone correlation spreading. The latter illustrates that an effective notion of locality can be engineered in a system with fully collective interactions.

Fast generation of spin squeezing via resonant spin-boson coupling

We propose protocols for the creation of useful entangled states in a system of spins collectively coupled to a bosonic mode, directly applicable to trapped-ion and cavity QED setups. The protocols use coherent manipulations of the spin-boson interactions naturally arising in these systems to prepare spin squeezed states exponentially fast in time. We demonstrate the robustness of the protocols by analyzing the effects of natural sources of decoherence in these systems and show their advantage compared to more standard slower approaches where entanglement is generated algebraically with time.

Spin qudit tomography and state reconstruction error

We consider the task of performing quantum state tomography on a $d$-level spin qudit, using only measurements of spin projection onto different quantization axes. After introducing a basis of operators closely related to the spherical harmonics, which obey the rotational symmetries of spin qudits, we map our quantum tomography task onto the classical problem of signal recovery on the sphere. We then provide algorithms with $O(rd^3)$ serial runtime, parallelizable down to $O(rd^2)$, for (i) computing a priori upper bounds on the expected error with which spin projection measurements along $r$ given axes can reconstruct an unknown qudit state, and (ii) estimating a posteriori the statistical error in a reconstructed state. Our algorithms motivate a simple randomized tomography protocol, for which we find that using more measurement axes can yield substantial benefits that plateau after $r\approx3d$.

Engineering infinite-range SU($n$) interactions with spin-orbit-coupled fermions in an optical lattice

We study multilevel fermions in an optical lattice described by the Hubbard model with on site SU($n$)-symmetric interactions. We show that in an appropriate parameter regime this system can be mapped onto a spin model with all-to-all SU($n$)-symmetric couplings. Raman pulses that address internal spin states modify the atomic dispersion relation and induce spin-orbit coupling, which can act as a synthetic inhomogeneous magnetic field that competes with the SU($n$) exchange interactions. We investigate the mean-field dynamical phase diagram of the resulting model as a function of $n$ and different initial configurations that are accessible with Raman pulses. Consistent with previous studies for $n=2$, we find that for some initial states the spin model exhibits two distinct dynamical phases that obey simple scaling relations with $n$. Moreover, for $n>2$ we find that dynamical behavior can be highly sensitive to initial intra-spin coherences. Our predictions are readily testable in current experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms.

A cavity-QED quantum simulator of dynamical phases of a BCS superconductor

We propose to simulate dynamical phases of a BCS superconductor using an ensemble of cold atoms trapped in an optical cavity. Effective Cooper pairs are encoded via internal states of the atoms and attractive interactions are realized via the exchange of virtual photons between atoms coupled to a common cavity mode. Control of the interaction strength combined with a tunable dispersion relation of the effective Cooper pairs allows exploration of the full dynamical phase diagram of the BCS model, as a function of system parameters and the prepared initial state. Our proposal paves the way for the study of non-equilibrium features of quantum magnetism and superconductivity by harnessing atom-light interactions in cold atomic gases.

Quantum-enhanced sensing of displacements and electric fields with large trapped-ion crystals

Developing the isolation and control of ultracold atomic systems to the level of single quanta has led to significant advances in quantum sensing, yet demonstrating a quantum advantage in real world applications by harnessing entanglement remains a core task. Here, we realize a many-body quantum-enhanced sensor to detect weak displacements and electric fields using a large crystal of $\sim 150$ trapped ions. The center of mass vibrational mode of the crystal serves as high-Q mechanical oscillator and the collective electronic spin as the measurement device. By entangling the oscillator and the collective spin before the displacement is applied and by controlling the coherent dynamics via a many-body echo we are able to utilize the delicate spin-motion entanglement to map the displacement into a spin rotation such that we avoid quantum back-action and cancel detrimental thermal noise. We report quantum enhanced sensitivity to displacements of $8.8 \pm 0.4~$dB below the standard quantum limit and a sensitivity for measuring electric fields of $240\pm10~\mathrm{nV}\mathrm{m}^{-1}$ in $1$ second ($240~\mathrm{nV}\mathrm{m}^{-1}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$).

Atom-light entanglement for precise field sensing in the optical domain

Macroscopic arrays of cold atoms trapped in optical cavities can reach the strong atom-light collective coupling regime thanks to the simultaneous interactions of the cavity mode with the atomic ensemble. In a recent work we reported a protocol that takes advantage of the strong and collective atom-light interactions in cavity QED systems for precise electric field sensing in the optical domain. We showed that it can provide between $10$-$20$~dB of metrological gain over the standard quantum limit in current cavity QED experiments operating with long-lived alkaline-earth atoms. Here, we give a more in depth discussion of the protocol using both exact analytical calculations and numerical simulations, and describe the precise conditions under which the predicted enhancement holds after thoroughly accounting for both photon loss and spontaneous emission, natural decoherence mechanisms in current experiments. The analysis presented here not only serves to benchmark the protocol and its utility in cavity QED arrays but also sets the conditions required for its applicability in other experimental platforms such as arrays of trapped ions.

Driven-Dissipative Quantum Dynamics in Ultra Long-lived Dipoles in an Optical Cavity

We study the quantum dynamics of many-body arrays of two-level atoms in a driven cavity subject to collective decay and interactions mediated by the cavity field. We work in the bad cavity limit accessible, for example, using long-lived electronic clock states of alkaline earth atoms, for which the bare atomic linewidth is much less than the cavity linewidth. In the absence of interactions, our system reduces to previously studied models of collective fluorescence. We show that while interactions do not qualitatively change the steady state properties, they lead to a drastic change in the dynamical properties. We find that, for some interval of driving strengths, the system shows two very distinct types of transient behaviors that depend on the initial state of the system. In particular, there is a parameter regime where the system features oscillatory dynamics with a period of oscillation that becomes much shorter than the duration of the overall transient dynamics as the atom number increases. We use both mean field and exact numerical calculations of the quantum system to investigate the dynamics.

Dispersive Regimes of the Dicke Model

We study two dispersive regimes in the dynamics of $N$ two-level atoms interacting with a bosonic mode for long interaction times. Firstly, we analyze the dispersive multiqubit quantum Rabi model for the regime in which the qubit frequencies are equal and smaller than the mode frequency, and for values of the coupling strength similar or larger than the mode frequency, namely, the deep strong coupling regime. Secondly, we address an interaction that is dependent on the photon number, where the coupling strength is comparable to the geometric mean of the qubit and mode frequencies. We show that the associated dynamics is analytically tractable and provide useful frameworks with which to analyze the system behavior. In the deep strong coupling regime, we unveil the structure of unexpected resonances for specific values of the coupling, present for $N\ge2$, and in the photon-number-dependent regime we demonstrate that all the nontrivial dynamical behavior occurs in the atomic degrees of freedom for a given Fock state. We verify these assertions with numerical simulations of the qubit population and photon-statistic dynamics.
