BMS$_3$ invariant field theories

We review existing and construct new two-dimensional field theories that exhibit BMS$_3$ symmetry, with and without central extensions. These include interacting electric, magnetic and canonical BMS$_3$ scalar theories, as well as couplings between the electric and magnetic sectors. We provide a careful analysis of boundary contributions at the corner points $u\rightarrow\pm\infty$, determine the counterterms and boundary conditions required by BMS$_3$ invariance, and study the corresponding variational principles. Furthermore, we introduce external sources and derive the associated flux-balance laws. Within the framework of flat-space holography, we show that a simple free electric BMS$_3$ model with the appropriate central charge reproduces the monodromy classification of three-dimensional Einstein gravity. Finally, we investigate the flat-space limits of both AdS$_3$ and dS$_3$, whose boundary dynamics are described by Carrollian limits of Liouville and Euclidean Liouville theory, respectively. Although the resulting BMS$_3$ theories possess isomorphic spectra, they differ in the signs of the supertranslation charges and the central charge. This suggests that the flat-space limits of AdS$_3$ and dS$_3$ provide complementary realizations of flat-space holography.

Quantum Fluctuations and Newton-Cartan Geometry for Non-Relativistic de Sitter space

We study a non-relativistic realisation of two-dimensional de Sitter gravity both from its boundary and bulk description with the goal of learning about de Sitter space and paving the way for extending the holographic duality into a non-relativistic direction. On the boundary side, we analyse the Schwarzian-type boundary action associated with non-relativistic de Sitter gravity and evaluate its one-loop partition function in order to compute its quantum fluctuations. Rather than relying on the coadjoint-orbit construction, we derive the path integral measure directly from the action using the Ostrogradsky formalism. We find a temperature-dependent prefactor scaling as $T^2$, of which the power agrees with the counting of the four global symmetry generators present. On the bulk side, we construct the corresponding torsionless Newton-Cartan geometry and show that it satisfies the equations of motion of a non-relativistic JT-like action and uplift the geometry to a three-dimensional Lorentzian geometry.

AdS$_3$ Carroll gravity: asymptotic symmetries and C-thermal configurations

The asymptotic structure of three-dimensional Carroll gravity with negative cosmological constant is studied. We formulate a consistent set of boundary conditions preserved by an infinite-dimensional extension of the AdS$_3$ Carroll algebra, which turns out to be isomorphic to a precise generalized BMS$_3$ algebra. This is described by four independent functions of the circle at infinity, generating spatial superrotations, Carroll superboosts, spatial supertranslations and time supertranslations. Remarkably, this asymptotic symmetry algebra contains as subalgebras to BMS$_3$ (generated by spatial superrotations and time supertranslations) and the two-dimensional conformal algebra (spanned by spatial superrotations and spatial supertranslations). We also introduce a new solution - endowed with a Carroll extremal surface - that fulfills this set of asymptotic conditions. By taking advantage of the Chern-Simons formulation of the theory, Carroll thermal properties, obtained from regularity conditions, and entropy of the configuration are also addressed.

AdS Carroll Structures from Poincaré Isomorphism: Asymptotic Symmetry Analysis

Starting from the isomorphism between the AdS Carroll and Poincaré algebras, we map the three-dimensional asymptotically flat solutions of Poincaré gravity into an AdS Carroll spacetime. We show the mapped solutions satisfy the field equations of the Chern-Simons formulation of AdS Carroll gravity and exhibit a Carroll geometry structure. Despite the presence of a negative cosmological constant in the mapped spacetime, the algebra of the canonical generators of the asymptotic symmetries is given by the $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ algebra.

Carroll Strings with an Extended Symmetry Algebra

Starting from the Polyakov action we consider two distinct Carroll limits in target space, keeping the string worldsheet relativistic. The resulting magnetic and chiral Carroll string models exhibit different symmetries and dynamics. Both models have an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra with Carroll symmetry included in a finite dimensional subalgebra. For the magnetic model, this is the so-called string Carroll algebra. The chiral model realises an extended version of the string Carroll algebra. The magnetic model does not have any transverse string excitations. The chiral model is less restrictive and includes arbitrary left-moving modes that carry transverse momentum but do not contribute to the energy in target space.

Thermodynamics of the three-dimensional black hole with torsion

The stationary black hole solution of a Chern-Simons model based on the semi-simple extension of the Poincaré gauge group is studied. The solution resembles the metric properties of the BTZ geometry but contains, in addition, non-vanishing torsion. The global structure of spacetime is characterized by three conserved charges: two associated with the mass and angular momentum and one extra constant triggered by spacetime torsion. Consequently, we show that the entropy deviates from the standard Bekenstein-Hawking value and discuss the implications of torsional charges in the context of black hole thermodynamics.

Electric/Magnetic Newton-Hooke and Carroll Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity

We construct the electric and magnetic Newton-Hooke and Carroll Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity theories using the isomorphism of Newton-Hooke$_\pm$ and (A-)dS Carroll algebras in $(1+1)$-spacetime dimensions. The starting point is the non-relativistic and Carroll version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity without restrictions on the geometry studied in [15].

Infinite conformal symmetry and emergent chiral (super)fields of topologically non-trivial configurations: From Yang-Mills-Higgs to the Skyrme model

The present manuscript discusses a remarkable phenomenon concerning non-linear and non-integrable field theories in $(3+1)$-dimensions, living at finite density and possessing non-trivial topological charges and non-Abelian internal symmetries (both local and global). With suitable types of ansätze, one can construct infinite-dimensional families of analytic solutions with non-vanishing topological charges (representing the Baryonic number) labelled by both two integers numbers and by free scalar fields in $(1+1)$-dimensions. These exact configurations represent $(3+1)$-dimensional topological solitons hosting $(1+1)$-dimensional chiral modes localized at the energy density peaks. First, we analyze the Yang-Mills-Higgs model, in which the fields depend on all the space-time coordinates (to keep alive the topological Chern-Simons charge), but in such a way to reduce the equations system to the field equations of two-dimensional free massless chiral scalar fields. Then, we move to the non-linear sigma model, showing that a suitable ansatz reduces the field equations to the one of a two-dimensional free massless scalar field. Then, we discuss the Skyrme model concluding that the inclusion of the Skyrme term gives rise to a chiral two-dimensional free massless scalar field (instead of a free massless field in two dimensions as in the non-linear sigma model) describing analytically spatially modulated Hadronic layers and tubes. The comparison of the present approach both with the instantons-dyons liquid approach and with Lattice QCD is shortly outlined.

The First Law for the Lorentzian Rotating Taub-NUT

We show that the first law for the rotating Taub-NUT is straightforwardly established with the surface charge method. The entropy is explicitly found as a charge, and its value is not proportional to the horizon area. We conclude that there are unavoidable contributions from the Misner strings to the charges, still, the mass and angular momentum gets standard values. However, there are no independent charges associated with the Misner strings.

World-Line Description of Fractons

We formulate the word-line approach of the field theory of fractons and their symmetries. The distinction between the different models is based on their dispersion relations for the energy. In order to study the sub-system symmetries, we construct the Routhians associated with the particle Lagrangians considered. We also construct the pseudoclassical description of spinning fractons.

Exact \textit{pp}-waves, (A)dS waves and Kundt spaces in the Abelian-Higgs model

We find new exact solutions of the Abelian-Higgs model coupled to General Relativity, characterized by a non-vanishing superconducting current. The solutions correspond to \textit{pp}-waves, AdS waves, and Kundt spaces, for which both the Maxwell field and the gradient of the phase of the scalar are aligned with the null direction defining these spaces. In the Kundt family, the geometry of the two-dimensional surfaces orthogonal to the superconducting current is determined by the solutions of the two-dimensional Liouville equation, and in consequence, these surfaces are of constant curvature, as it occurs in a vacuum. The solution to the Liouville equation also acts as a potential for the Maxwell field, which we integrate into a closed-form. Using these results, we show that the combined effects of the gravitational and scalar interactions can confine the electromagnetic field within a bounded region in the surfaces transverse to the current.

Non-relativistic and Carrollian limits of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We construct the non-relativistic and Carrollian versions of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. In the second order formulation, there are no divergences in the non-relativistic and Carrollian limits. Instead, in the first order formalism there are divergences that can be avoided by starting from a relativistic BF theory with (A)dS2$\times\mathbb{R}$ gauge algebra. We show how to define the boundary duals of the gravity actions using the method of non-linear realisations and suitable Inverse Higgs constraints. In particular, the non-relativistic version of the Schwarzian action is constructed in this way. We derive the asymptotic symmetries of the theory, as well as the corresponding conserved charges and Newton-Cartan geometric structure. Finally, we show how the same construction applies to the Carrollian case.

The multi-planet system TOI-421 -- A warm Neptune and a super puffy mini-Neptune transiting a G9 V star in a visual binary

We report the discovery of a warm Neptune and a hot sub-Neptune transiting TOI-421 (BD-14 1137, TIC 94986319), a bright (V=9.9) G9 dwarf star in a visual binary system observed by the TESS space mission in Sectors 5 and 6. We performed ground-based follow-up observations -- comprised of LCOGT transit photometry, NIRC2 adaptive optics imaging, and FIES, CORALIE, HARPS, HIRES, and PFS high-precision Doppler measurements -- and confirmed the planetary nature of the 16-day transiting candidate announced by the TESS team. We discovered an additional radial velocity signal with a period of 5 days induced by the presence of a second planet in the system, which we also found to transit its host star. We found that the inner mini-Neptune, TOI-421b, has an orbital period of Pb =5.19672 +- 0.00049 days, a mass of Mb = 7.17 +- 0.66 Mearth and a radius of Rb = 2.68+0.19-0.18 Rearth, whereas the outer warm Neptune, TOI-421 c, has a period of Pc =16.06819 +- 0.00035 days, a mass of Mc = 16.42+1.06-1.04 Mearth, a radius of Rc = 5.09+0.16-0.15 Rearth and a density of rho_c =0.685+0.080-0.072 g cm-3 . With its characteristics the inner planet (rho_b=2.05+0.52-0.41 g cm-3) is placed in the intriguing class of the super-puffy mini-Neptunes. TOI-421b and TOI-421c are found to be well suitable for atmospheric characterization. Our atmospheric simulations predict significant Ly-alpha transit absorption, due to strong hydrogen escape in both planets, and the presence of detectable CH_4 in the atmosphere of TOI-421c if equilibrium chemistry is assumed.

K2-280b -- a low density warm sub-Saturn around a mildly evolved star

We present an independent discovery and detailed characterisation of K2-280b, a transiting low density warm sub-Saturn in a 19.9-day moderately eccentric orbit (e = 0.35_{-0.04}^{+0.05}) from K2 campaign 7. A joint analysis of high precision HARPS, HARPS-N, and FIES radial velocity measurements and K2 photometric data indicates that K2-280b has a radius of R_b = 7.50 +/- 0.44 R_Earth and a mass of M_b = 37.1 +/- 5.6 M_Earth, yielding a mean density of 0.48_{-0.10}^{+0.13} g/cm^3. The host star is a mildly evolved G7 star with an effective temperature of T_{eff} = 5500 +/- 100 K, a surface gravity of log(g) = 4.21 +/- 0.05 (cgs), and an iron abundance of [Fe/H] = 0.33 +/- 0.08 dex, and with an inferred mass of M_star = 1.03 +/- 0.03 M_sun and a radius of R_star = 1.28 +/- 0.07 R_sun. We discuss the importance of K2-280b for testing formation scenarios of sub-Saturn planets and the current sample of this intriguing group of planets that are absent in the Solar System.

TOI-503: The first known brown dwarf-Am star binary from the TESS mission

We report the discovery of an intermediate-mass transiting brown dwarf, TOI-503b, from the TESS mission. TOI-503b is the first brown dwarf discovered by TESS and orbits a metallic-line A-type star with a period of $P=3.6772 \pm 0.0001$ days. The light curve from TESS indicates that TOI-503b transits its host star in a grazing manner, which limits the precision with which we measure the brown dwarf's radius ($R_b = 1.34^{+0.26}_{-0.15} R_J$). We obtained high-resolution spectroscopic observations with the FIES, Ondřejov, PARAS, Tautenburg, and TRES spectrographs and measured the mass of TOI-503b to be $M_b = 53.7 \pm 1.2 M_J$. The host star has a mass of $M_\star = 1.80 \pm 0.06 M_\odot$, a radius of $R_\star = 1.70 \pm 0.05 R_\odot$, an effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff} = 7650 \pm 160$K, and a relatively high metallicity of $0.61\pm 0.07$ dex. We used stellar isochrones to derive the age of the system to be $\sim$180 Myr, which places its age between that of RIK 72b (a $\sim$10 Myr old brown dwarf in the Upper Scorpius stellar association) and AD 3116b (a $\sim$600 Myr old brown dwarf in the Praesepe cluster). We argue that this brown dwarf formed in-situ, based on the young age of the system and the long circularization timescale for this brown dwarf around its host star. TOI-503b joins a growing number of known short-period, intermediate-mass brown dwarfs orbiting main sequence stars, and is the second such brown dwarf known to transit an A star, after HATS-70b. With the growth in the population in this regime, the driest region in the brown dwarf desert ($35-55 M_J \sin{i}$) is reforesting and its mass range shrinking.

Surface Charges Toolkit for Gravity

These notes provide a detailed catalog of surface charge formulas for different classes of gravity theories. The present catalog reviews and extends the existing literature on the topic. Part of the focus is on reviewing the method to compute quasi-local surface charges for gauge theories in order to clarify conceptual issues and their range of applicability. Many surface charge formulas for gravity theories are expressed in metric, tetrads-connection, Chern-Simons connection, and even BF variables. For most of them, the language of differential forms is exploited and contrasted with the more popular metric components language. The gravity theory is coupled with matter fields as scalar, Maxwell, Skyrme, Yang-Mills, and spinors. Furthermore, three examples with ready-to-download notebook codes, show the method in full action. Several new results are highlighted through the notes.

It takes two planets in resonance to tango around K2-146

K2-146 is a cool, 0.358 M_sun dwarf that was found to host a mini-Neptune with a 2.67-days period. The planet exhibited strong transit timing variations (TTVs) of greater than 30 minutes, indicative of the presence of a further object in the system. Here we report the discovery of the previously undetected outer planet, K2-146 c, in the system using additional photometric data. K2-146 c was found to have a grazing transit geometry and a 3.97-day period. The outer planet was only significantly detected in the latter K2 campaigns presumably because of precession of its orbital plane. The TTVs of K2-146 b and c were measured using observations spanning a baseline of almost 1200 days. We found strong anti-correlation in the TTVs, suggesting the two planets are gravitationally interacting. Our TTV and transit model analyses revealed that K2-146 b has a radius of 2.25 $\pm$ 0.10 \R_earth and a mass of 5.6 $\pm$ 0.7 M_earth, whereas K2-146 c has a radius of $2.59_{-0.39}^{+1.81}$ R_earth and a mass of 7.1 $\pm$ 0.9 M_earth. The inner and outer planets likely have moderate eccentricities of $e = 0.14 \pm 0.07$ and $0.16 \pm 0.07$, respectively. Long-term numerical integrations of the two-planet orbital solution show that it can be dynamically stable for at least 2 Myr. The evaluation of the resonance angles of the planet pair indicates that K2-146 b and c are likely trapped in a 3:2 mean motion resonance. The orbital architecture of the system points to a possible convergent migration origin.

Greening of the Brown Dwarf Desert. EPIC 212036875 b -- a 51 M$_\mathrm{J}$ object in a 5 day orbit around an F7 V star

Our aim is to investigate the nature and formation of brown dwarfs by adding a new well-characterised object to the small sample of less than 20 transiting brown dwarfs. One brown dwarf candidate was found by the KESPRINT consortium when searching for exoplanets in the K2 space mission Campaign 16 field. We combined the K2 photometric data with a series of multi-colour photometric observations, imaging and radial velocity measurements to rule out false positive scenarios and to determine the fundamental properties of the system. We report the discovery and characterisation of a transiting brown dwarf in a 5.17 day eccentric orbit around the slightly evolved F7V star EPIC 212036875. We find a stellar mass of 1.15+/-0.08 M$_\odot$, a stellar radius of 1.41+/-0.05 R$_\odot$, and an age of 5.1+/-0.9 Gyr. The mass and radius of the companion brown dwarf are 51+/-2 MJ and 0.83+/-0.03 RJ, respectively, corresponding to a mean density of 108+15-13 g cm-3. EPIC 212036875 b is a rare object that resides in the brown dwarf desert. In the mass-density diagram for planets, brown dwarfs and stars, we find that all giant planets and brown dwarfs follow the same trend from ~0.3 MJ to the turn-over to hydrogen burning stars at ~73 MJ. EPIC 212036875 b falls close to the theoretical model for mature H/He dominated objects in this diagram as determined by interior structure models, as well as the empirical fit. We argue that EPIC 212036875 b formed via gravitational disc instabilities in the outer part of the disc, followed by a quick migration. Orbital tidal circularisation may have started early in its history for a brief period when the brown dwarf's radius was larger. The lack of spin-orbit synchronisation points to a weak stellar dissipation parameter which implies a circularisation timescale of >23 Gyr, or suggests an interaction between the magnetic and tidal forces of the star and the brown dwarf.
