On the relation between the product of KK-groups and the KK-group of the product

We observe that the canonical map \(KK(A, \prod_{n \in \mathbb{N}} B_n) \to \prod_{n \in \mathbb{N}} KK(A,B_n)\) is an isomorphism of abelian groups whenever \(A\) enjoys the Universal Coefficient Theorem and \(B_n\) are unital, simple and purely infinite C*-algebras. This clarifies an aspect of previous work of Dadarlat--Eilers and Tikuisis--White--Winter.

A groupoid model for Rørdam's finite-infinite $C^*$-algebra

We construct a groupoid model for Rordam's example of a simple, nuclear, separable $C^*$-algebra containing a finite and an infinite projection. This groupoid model arises from a (crossed product of a) carefully chosen model for the inductive limit construction in Rordam's original approach, which we show to yield a Cartan subalgebra of the limit. In particular, this procedure yields a locally compact, second countable, Hausdorff, étale, amenable, minimal and topologically principal groupoid whose unit space is compact, and whose $C^*$-algebra contains an infinite and a non-zero finite projection. Hence, this groupoid is amenable, and yet does not have comparison.

A dichotomy for inverse-semigroup crossed products via dynamical Cuntz semigroups

We characterise stable finiteness and pure infiniteness of the essential crossed product of a C*-algebra by an action of an inverse semigroup. Under additional assumptions, we prove a stably finite / purely infinite dichotomy. Our main technique is the development, using an induced action, of a ``dynamical Cuntz semigroup'' that is a subquotient of the usual Cuntz semigroup. We prove that the essential crossed product is stably finite / purely infinite if and only if the dynamical Cuntz semigroup admits / does not admit a nontrivial state. Indeed, a retract of our dynamical Cuntz semigroup suffices to prove the dichotomy. Our results generalise those by Rainone on crossed products of groups acting by automorphisms of a C*-algebra, and we recover results by Kwaśniewski--Meyer--Prasad on C*-algebras of non-Hausdorff groupoids.

A Baum-Connes assembly map for essential semigroup crossed products

We construct an equivariant E-theory and a Baum-Connes assembly map at the level of Fell bundles of inverse semigroups over separable C*-algebras. This generalizes previous work of several authors, and allows to discuss E-theoretic matters in the context of Cartan pairs; maximal and essential C*-algebras of non-Hausdorff groupoids; and Fell bundles over discrete groups and étale groupoids, among others. In order to do this we establish several functoriality properties for maximal, reduced and essential cross-sectional C*-algebras associated with a (saturated) Fell bundle of an inverse semigroup. This allows to discuss when these algebras give rise to short exact sequences, generalizing the classical case of discrete groups. We also introduce the adequate notion of ``proper'' Fell bundle, or ``proper'' action of an inverse semigroup, and prove a weak containment property for these. Using these functoriality properties and these proper actions we then introduce (maximal, reduced and/or essential) equivariant E-theory by means of adequately equivariant asymptotic morphisms, and construct a Baum-Connes assembly map that is both natural and reasonably well-behaved.

Algebraic singular functions are not always dense in the ideal of $C^*$-singular functions

We give the first examples of étale (non-Hausdorff) groupoids $\mathcal G$ whose $C^*$-algebras contain singular elements that cannot be approximated by singular elements in $\mathcal C_c(\mathcal G)$. We provide two examples: one is a bundle of groups, and the other a minimal and effective groupoid constructed from a self-similar action on an infinite alphabet. Moreover, we also prove that the Baum--Connes assembly map for the first example is not surjective, not even on the level of its essential $C^*$-algebra.

Essential groupoid amenability and nuclearity of groupoid C*-algebras

We give an alternative construction of the essential $C^*$-algebra of an étale groupoid, along with an ``amenability'' notion for such groupoids that is implied by the nuclearity of this essential $C^*$-algebra. In order to do this we first introduce a maximal version of the essential $C^*$-algebra, and prove that every function with dense co-support can only be supported on the set of ``dangerous'' arrows. We then introduce an essential amenability condition for a groupoid, which is (strictly) weaker than its (topological) amenability. As an application, we describe the Bruce-Li algebras arising from algebraic actions of cancellative semigroups as exotic essential $C^*$-algebras.

A rigidity framework for Roe-like algebras

In this memoir we develop a framework to study rigidity problems for Roe-like C*-algebras of countably generated coarse spaces. The main goal is to give a complete and self-contained solution to the problem of C*-rigidity for proper (extended) metric spaces. Namely, we show that (stable) isomorphisms among Roe algebras always give rise to coarse equivalences. The material is organized as to provide a unified proof of C*-rigidity for Roe algebras, algebras of operators of controlled propagation, and algebras of quasi-local operators. We also prove a more refined C*-rigidity statement which has several additional applications. For instance, we can put the correspondence between coarse geometry and operator algebras in a categorical framework, and we prove that the outer automorphism groups of these C*-algebras are all isomorphic to the group of coarse equivalences of the coarse space.

C*-rigidity of bounded geometry metric spaces

We prove that uniformly locally finite metric spaces with isomorphic Roe algebras must be coarsely equivalent. As an application, we also prove that the outer automorphism group of the Roe algebra of a metric space of bounded geometry is canonically isomorphic to the group of coarse equivalences of the space up to closeness.

An unified approach to link prediction in collaboration networks

This article investigates and compares three approaches to link prediction in colaboration networks, namely, an ERGM (Exponential Random Graph Model; Robins et al. 2007), a GCN (Graph Convolutional Network; Kipf and Welling 2017), and a Word2Vec+MLP model (Word2Vec model combined with a multilayer neural network; Mikolov et al. 2013a and Goodfellow et al. 2016). The ERGM, grounded in statistical methods, is employed to capture general structural patterns within the network, while the GCN and Word2Vec+MLP models leverage deep learning techniques to learn adaptive structural representations of nodes and their relationships. The predictive performance of the models is assessed through extensive simulation exercises using cross-validation, with metrics based on the receiver operating characteristic curve. The results clearly show the superiority of machine learning approaches in link prediction, particularly in large networks, where traditional models such as ERGM exhibit limitations in scalability and the ability to capture inherent complexities. These findings highlight the potential benefits of integrating statistical modeling techniques with deep learning methods to analyze complex networks, providing a more robust and effective framework for future research in this field.

Roe algebras of coarse spaces via coarse geometric modules

We provide a construction of Roe (C*-)algebras of general coarse spaces in terms of coarse geometric modules. This extends the classical theory of Roe algebras of metric spaces and gives a unified framework to deal with either uniform or non-uniform Roe algebras, algebras of operators of controlled propagation, and algebras of quasi-local operators; both in the metric and general coarse geometric setting. The key new definitions are that of coarse geometric module and coarse support of operators between coarse geometric modules. These let us construct natural bridges between coarse geometry and operator algebras. We then study the general structure of Roe-like algebras, and investigate several structural properties, such as admitting Cartan subalgebras or computing their intersection with the compact operators. Lastly, we prove that assigning to a coarse space the K-theory groups of its Roe algebra(s) is a natural functorial operation.

Quasi-countable inverse semigroups as metric spaces, and the uniform Roe algebras of locally finite inverse semigroups

Given any quasi-countable, in particular any countable inverse semigroup $S$, we introduce a way to equip $S$ with a proper and right subinvariant extended metric. This generalizes the notion of proper, right invariant metrics for discrete countable groups. Such a metric is shown to be unique up to bijective coarse equivalence of the semigroup, and hence depends essentially only on $S$. This allows us to unambiguously define the uniform Roe algebra of $S$, which we prove can be realized as a canonical crossed product of $\ell^\infty(S)$ and $S$. We relate these metrics to the analogous metrics on Hausdorff étale groupoids. Using this setting, we study those inverse semigroups with asymptotic dimension $0$. Generalizing results known for groups, we show that these are precisely the locally finite inverse semigroups, and are further characterized by having strongly quasi-diagonal uniform Roe algebras. We show that, unlike in the group case, having a finite uniform Roe algebra is strictly weaker and is characterized by $S$ being locally $\mathcal L$-finite, and equivalently sparse as a metric space.

Approximation properties of Fell bundles over inverse semigroups and non-Hausdorff groupoids

In this paper we study the nuclearity and weak containment property of reduced cross-sectional C*-algebras of Fell bundles over inverse semigroups. In order to develop the theory, we first prove an analogue of Fell's absorption trick in the context of Fell bundles over inverse semigroups. In parallel, the approximation property of Exel can be reformulated in this context, and Fell's absorption trick can be used to prove that the approximation property, as defined here, implies that the full and reduced cross-sectional C*-algebras are isomorphic via the left regular representation, i.e., the Fell bundle has the weak containment property. We then use this machinery to prove that a Fell bundle with the approximation property and nuclear unit fiber has a nuclear cross-sectional \cstar{}algebra. This result gives nuclearity of a large class of C*-algebras, as, remarkably, all the machinery in this paper works for étale non-Hausdorff groupoids just as well.

A note on the quasi-diagonality of inverse semigroup reduced C*-algebras

In this note we start the study of whether the reduced C*-algebra of an inverse semigroup is quasi-diagonal, making explicit use of the inner structure of this class of semigroups in order to produce quasi-diagonal approximations. Given a discrete inverse semigroup, we detail the relationship between its isolated subgroups and the quasi-diagonality of its reduced C*-algebra, and prove that such subgroups must be amenable. Moreover, we give a direct characterization of the quasi-diagonality of inverse semigroup whose universal groupoid is minimal. Lastly, we also study the relevance of Green's $\mathcal{D}$-relation when considering quasi-diagonality questions, and give a sufficient condition for the quasi-diagonality of a general inverse semigroup.

A note on commutation relations and finite dimensional approximations

In this article we show that the main C*-algebras describing the canonical commutation relations of quantum physics, i.e., the Weyl and resolvent algebras, are in the class of Følner C*-algebras, a class of C*-algebras admitting a kind of finite approximations of Følner type. In particular, we show that the tracial states of the resolvent algebra are uniform locally finite dimensional.

The uniform Roe algebra of an inverse semigroup

Given a discrete and countable inverse semigroup $S$ one can study, in analogy to the group case, its geometric aspects. In particular, we can equip $S$ with a natural metric, given by the path metric in the disjoint union of its Schützenberger graphs. This graph, which we denote by $Λ_S$, inherits much of the structure of $S$. In this article we compare the C*-algebra $\mathcal{R}_S$, generated by the left regular representation of $S$ on $\ell^2(S)$ and $\ell^\infty(S)$, with the uniform Roe algebra over the metric space, namely $C^*_u(Λ_S)$. This yields a chacterization of when $\mathcal{R}_S = C^*_u(Λ_S)$, which generalizes finite generation of $S$. We have termed this by finite labeability (FL), since it holds when the $Λ_S$ can be labeled in a finitary manner. The graph $Λ_S$, and the FL condition above, also allow to analyze large scale properties of $Λ_S$ and relate them with C*-properties of the uniform Roe algebra. In particular, we show that domain measurability of $S$ (a notion generalizing Day's definition of amenability of a semigroup, cf., [5]) is a quasi-isometric invariant of $Λ_S$. Moreover, we characterize property A of $Λ_S$ (or of its components) in terms of the nuclearity and exactness of the corresponding C*-algebras. We also treat the special classes of F-inverse and E-unitary inverse semigroups from this large scale point of view.

Amenability and paradoxicality in semigroups and C*-algebras

We analyze the dichotomy amenable/paradoxical in the context of (discrete, countable, unital) semigroups and corresponding semigroup rings. We consider also Følner's type characterizations of amenability and give an example of a semigroup whose semigroup ring is algebraically amenable but has no Følner sequence. In the context of inverse semigroups $S$ we give a characterization of invariant measures on $S$ (in the sense of Day) in terms of two notions: $domain$ $measurability$ and $localization$. Given a unital representation of $S$ in terms of partial bijections on some set $X$ we define a natural generalization of the uniform Roe algebra of a group, which we denote by $\mathcal{R}_X$. We show that the following notions are then equivalent: (1) $X$ is domain measurable; (2) $X$ is not paradoxical; (3) $X$ satisfies the domain Følner condition; (4) there is an algebraically amenable dense *-subalgebra of $\mathcal{R}_X$; (5) $\mathcal{R}_X$ has an amenable trace; (6) $\mathcal{R}_X$ is not properly infinite and (7) $[0]\not=[1]$ in the $K_0$-group of $\mathcal{R}_X$. We also show that any tracial state on $\mathcal{R}_X$ is amenable. Moreover, taking into account the localization condition, we give several C*-algebraic characterizations of the amenability of $X$. Finally, we show that for a certain class of inverse semigroups, the quasidiagonality of $C_r^*\left(X\right)$ implies the amenability of $X$. The converse implication is false.

Notions of Infinity in Quantum Physics

In this article we will review some notions of infiniteness that appear in Hilbert space operators and operator algebras. These include proper infiniteness, Murray von Neumann's classification into type I and type III factors and the class of F{/o} lner C*-algebras that capture some aspects of amenability. We will also mention how these notions reappear in the description of certain mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and the theory of superselection sectors. We also show that the algebra of the canonical anti-commutation relations (CAR-algebra) is in the class of F{/o} lner C*-algebras.
